rebirth symbols

A Fragment of the Fire

Devastation appears beside us

& takes us by the hand,

leads us in anguish

towards the light

& helps us to understand.

Heat and ash and molten meaning

are the symbols of rebirth,

enlightenment accompanies us

through the flames

where we are clothed

in our true worth.

Pain is not the only way

to share

a fragment of the fire,

when dominion finally

falls to embers

the smoke will carry us

from the pyre.

Lisa Lawrence’s Archetypes and Symbols List

Archetypes and Symbols

SITUATION ARCHETYPES

1. The Quest – This motif describes the search for someone or some talisman which, when found and brought back, will restore fertility to a wasted land, the desolation of which is mirrored by a leader’s illness and disability.

2. The Task – This refers to a possibly superhuman feat that must be accomplished in order to fulfill the ultimate goal.

3. The Journey – The journey sends the hero in search for some truth of information necessary to restore fertility, justice, and/or harmony to the kingdom. The journey includes the series of trials and tribulations the hero faces along the way. Usually the hero descends into a real or psychological hell and is forced to discover the blackest truths, quite often concerning his faults. Once the hero is at this lowest level, he must accept personal responsibility to return to the world of the living.

4. The Initiation – This situation refers to a moment, usually psychological, in which an individual comes into maturity. He or she gains a new awareness into the nature of circumstances and problems and understands his or her responsibility for trying to resolve the dilemma. Typically, a hero receives a calling, a message or signal that he or she must make sacrifices and become responsible for getting involved in the problem. Often a hero will deny and question the calling and ultimately, in the initiation, will accept responsibility.

5. The Ritual – Not to be confused with the initiation, the ritual refers to an organized ceremony that involves honored members of a given community and an Initiate. This situation officially brings the young man or woman into the realm of the community’s adult world.

6. The Fall – Not to be confused with the awareness in the initiation, this archetype describes a descent in action from a higher to a lower state of being, an experience which might involve defilement, moral imperfection, and/or loss of innocence. This fall is often accompanied by expulsion from a kind of paradise as penalty for disobedience and/or moral transgression.

7. Death and Rebirth – The most common of all situational archetypes, this motif grows out of the parallel between the cycle of nature and the cycle of life. It refers to those situations in which someone or something, concrete and/or metaphysical dies, yet is accompanied by some sign of birth or rebirth.

8. Nature vs. Mechanistic World – Expressed in its simplest form, this refers to situations which suggest that nature is good whereas the forces of technology are bad.

9. Battle Between Good and Evil – These situations pit obvious forces which represent good and evil against one another; typically, good ultimately triumphs over evil despite great odds.

10. The Unhealable Wound – This wound, physical or psychological, cannot be healed fully. This would also indicate a loss of innocence or purity. Often the wounds’ pain drives the sufferer to desperate measures of madness.

11. The Magic Weapon – Sometimes connected with the task, this refers to a skilled individual hero’s ability to use a piece of technology in order to combat evil, continue a journey, or to prove his or her identity as a chosen individual.

12. Father-Son Conflict – Tension often results from separation during childhood or from an external source when the individuals meet as men and where the mentor often has a higher place in the affections of the hero than the natural parent. Sometimes the conflict is resolved in atonement.

13. Innate Wisdom vs. Educated Stupidity – Some characters exhibit wisdom and understanding intuitively as opposed to those supposedly in charge.

SYMBOLIC ARCHETYPES

1. Light vs. Darkness – Light usually suggests hope, renewal, OR intellectual illumination; darkness implies the unknown, ignorance, or despair.

2. Water vs. Desert – Because water is necessary to life and growth, it commonly appears as a birth or rebirth symbol. Water is used in baptism services, which solemnizes spiritual births. Similarly, the appearance of rain in a work of literature can suggest a character’s spiritual birth.

3. Heaven vs. Hell – Humanity has traditionally associated parts of the universe not accessible to it with the dwelling places of the primordial forces that govern its world. The skies and mountaintops house its gods; the bowels of the earth contain the diabolic forces that inhabit its universe.

4. Haven vs. Wilderness – Places of safety contrast sharply against the dangerous wilderness. Heroes are often sheltered for a time to regain health and resources.

CHARACTER ARCHETYPES

1. The Hero – In its simplest form, this character is the one ultimately who may fulfill a necessary task and who will restore fertility, harmony, and/or justice to a community. The hero character is the one who typically experiences an initiation, who goes the community’s ritual (s), et cetera. Often he or she will embody characteristics of YOUNG PERSON FROM THE PROVINCES, INITIATE, INNATE WISDOM, PUPIL, and SON.

2. Young Person from the Provinces – This hero is taken away as an infant or youth and raised by strangers. He or she later returns home as a stranger and able to recognize new problems and new solutions.

3. The Initiates – These are young heroes who, prior to the quest, must endure some training and ritual. They are usually innocent at this stage.

4. Mentors – These individuals serve as teachers or counselors to the initiates. Sometimes they work as role models and often serve as father or mother figure. They teach by example the skills necessary to survive the journey and quest.

5. Hunting Group of Companions – These loyal companions are willing to face any number of perils in order to be together.

6. Loyal Retainers – These individuals are like the noble sidekicks to the hero. Their duty is to protect the hero. Often the retainer reflects the hero’s nobility.

RECOGNIZING PATTERNS

The following list of patterns comes from the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster who teaches at the University of Michigan. If you are serious about literary analysis, then it is highly recommended that you buy this book. It goes into detail what is just briefly mentioned and is written in such a lively, witty voice that it does not read like a textbook at all! It will be well worth your time and effort to read it.

Ø  Trips tend to become quests to discover self.

Ø  Meals together tend to be acts of communion/community or isolation.

Ø  Ghosts, vampires, monsters, and nasty people and sometimes simply the antagonists are not about supernatural brew-ha-ha; they tend to depict some sort of exploitation.

Ø  There’s only one story. Look for allusions and archetypes.

Ø  Weather matters.

Ø  Violence and be both literal and figurative.

Ø  Symbols can be objects, images, events, and actions.

Ø  Sometimes a story is meant to change us, the readers, and through us change society.

Ø  Keep an eye out for Christ-figures.

Ø  Flying tends to represent freedom. What do you think falling represents?

Ø  Getting dunked or just sprinkled in something wet tends to be a baptism.

Ø  Geography tends to be a metaphor for the psyche.

Ø  Seasons tend to be traditional symbols.

Ø  Disabilities, Scars, and Deformities show character and theme.

Ø  Heart disease tends to represent problems with character and society.

Ø  So do illness and disease.

Ø  Read with your imagination.

Ø  Irony trumps everything!

Ø  Remember the difference between public and private symbols.

What’s the Solar Eclipse mean for Witchcraft?

Whats a Solar Eclipse Mean for Witches?

When it comes to solar eclipses, expect breakdowns and breakthroughs. Leo’s and those whose birthdays fall within 5 days of the solar eclipse need to watch their health as they’ll be affected most closely due to their relationship with the sun. The sun is the ruler of Leo and both the moon and the sun will be in Leo so that energy will be amplified.

[Side Note FYI: Trump is a Leo. “Trump was actually born on a total lunar eclipse (June 14, 1946), and, according to Nicholas, if you’re born during an eclipse, you’re more susceptible to the energy of an eclipse.” Solar eclipses are typically markings of the downfall of a leader. One can only hope.]

Hows the energy working?

“Thought 1 - Eclipses always take place during the New Moon when the Sun and the Moon are in the same sign. Together in the sky, their energies are combined and supercharged for the energy of that sign.

Thought 2 - An eclipse gives us the energy of an entire cycle of seasons, or cycle of a day from twilight, darkness, dawn to light, from the waning light of autumn to the darkness of winter, to the growing light of spring and brightness of summer. This is powerful energy to harness to bring about big change quickly.

Thought 3- The moon engulfs the sun, turning the sky bloody, but the sun emerges again in a symbol of rebirth. This makes an equinox a great time practice rites designed to wash away the old to make way for the new, to break down barriers to come out into the light.

Thought 4- Since the moon is in its dark phase, and it is blocking the sun, it could be said that the energy of both is blocked and thus unavailable, on pause for a moment.” - Witchipedia

So how can I harness this energy?

Just like you harness any other energy, set out water in a glass bottle or stones which can harness sun and moon energy like Clear Quartz, Herkimer Diamonds, or Citrine.

Enjoy and BE SAFE.

Anubis Aesthetic

Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumed different roles in various contexts. Depicted as a protector of graves as early as the First Dynasty (c. 3100 – c. 2890 BC), Anubis was also an embalmer. One of his prominent roles was as a god who ushered souls into the afterlife. He attended the weighing scale during the “Weighing of the Heart,” in which it was determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead. Despite being one of the most ancient and “one of the most frequently depicted and mentioned gods” in the Egyptian pantheon, Anubis played almost no role in Egyptian myths. Anubis was depicted in black, a color that symbolized both rebirth and the discoloration of the corpse after embalming. His female counterpart is Anput. His daughter is the serpent goddess Kebechet.

Daffodils and V

What do daffodils represent?

I love learning about flowers and after watching V’s route opening, I realized I don’t know anything about them other than we, for some reason, have a pair that bloom every spring in front of our house. So, I looked them up.

Daffodils symbolize rebirth and new beginnings. Daffodils have meanings of faith, honesty, truth, forgiveness, and forthrightness. They are also symbolic of the clarity of thought and the power of inner beauty.

What do daffodils mean to V was my second question before looking them up but the answer is all right there. Perhaps, in this route, we’ll finally see the V we want. In the video, V looked much more mature to put it simply. Before, Jumin said that V would back down at the first signs of confrontation; he was by no means a fighter. But now? Now, V looks confident in a way. He looks stronger.

Perhaps we now in Another Story have a V that is honest and more outspoken. A V that no longer hides anything from his friends. A V that can forgive Rika and more importantly himself. A V that can finally be Kim Jihyun with confidence and receive the love he truly deserves. He was a daffodil that was looked down upon by the sun, struggling to survive. Maybe now, we can nurture him properly. I want nothing more than to love him the way he deserves myself.

Daffodils, Mugs, and Rising From the Ashes

Fandom: Avengers/Captain America

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Enhanced!Reader

A/N: I have had this idea in my head for ages and I finally typed it up. I still feel like its a bit rough and doesnt flow very well but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯   as usual feedback is greatly appreciated! Feel free to reblog!! If anyone wants to draw Bucky in the gardening scene that would be great. I also suck at titles.

“Hey Buckster,” You greet Bucky Barnes as you enter the kitchen of the Avenger’s tower one morning.

“Hello,” He says, his signature frown on his face at your nick name for him as he looks up from the paper he was reading.

“It supposed to be warmer today, I’m going for a walk around the park, would you like to come with me?” Going to grab your favorite mug for your coffee, you found that it was on the highest shelf. Cursing whoever emptied the dishwasher last, you attempted to stand on your tip toes to reach it, but couldn’t. “Buckster, will you do me a favor and grab my mug for me?” He nodded, moving over to you and reaching the cub with ease. “Thank you. So, what do you say about the walk.”

“No thank you,” He said simply before returning to his breakfast and paper.

Every morning you planned something to do, walk, attending to your flower garden on the top level of the tower, or Sundays and Wednesdays it was the farmer’s market, sometimes it was to read outside, other times a run, anything that you could invite Bucky along to. You had been doing it since about a week after he arrived, which was about three months ago, now. Every morning you ate breakfast at the same time as him, and every morning you’d ask if he wanted to do something with you, and every morning he would say ‘no, thank you.’ Then, every morning you would sit down and talk to him, well, at him, while you both ate or drank coffee.

“I know Clint calls me hot-head for the pun, but it just doesn’t make sense, I am a relatively calm person, I think.” You rant to a non-responsive Bucky about the nickname that Clint gave you. Being an Enhanced with the ability to summon and control fire it came the opportunity for a multitude of puns, all of which the team would take advantage of. You enjoyed the joking for the most part but sometimes it made you a bit upset because you were self-conscious about your enhancement, feeling that fire was far too destructive of an element for yourself. “Anyways, have a good day Buckster.” Hoping off the stool at the breakfast bar, you rinsed out your mug and put it in the drying rack just as Sam and Steve walked in from their morning run.

“Goodness, it’s hot.” Sam commented, both of them with sweat stains down their shirts.

“Don’t worry, I’m leaving.” You tease, waving as you walk out the door. You swore you heard a stifled chuckle from Bucky.

“Good morning, Bucko,” You grin at Bucky the next day, walking into the kitchen and making your way to the cabinets as usual, “How was your yesterday?”

“Fine.” He responded shortly, glancing up from the paper.

“Damn it, who the hell keeps putting my mug on the tallest shelf?” You mutter as you attempt to grab your mug again on your very tip toes. Before you could turn around to grab a chair, you felt the presence of someone right behind you and saw a metal arm reach out in front of you and grab the mug for you. “Thank you,” You grinned up at him as you took it from his hand once he held it out for you. “I’m going to the farmer’s market today, I was thinking about getting some fresh flowers to brighten up the place in here and possibly some veggies, wanna come with?” With a fluttering in your stomach at how close he was standing to you, you took another shot in the dark, prepared for disappointment.

             “Sure,” Bucky nodded once.

A look of surprise washed over your face for a moment but it was quickly replaced with a grin so bright it rivaled the sun. “Awesome! We can go after breakfast?” You ask, practically jumping with excitement. He nods, a corner of his lip quirking up in what you believe to be a smile.

After you practically shot gun your cup of coffee you quickly change out of your pajamas and grab your bag, you meet Bucky back in the kitchen. You spend most of the walk to the park where the farmer’s market was in comfortable silence. “What is your favorite type of flower?” You ask as you near the tents and spot the flower stand.

“I don’t know,” Was all the answer you got, but you smiled anyways, mentally picking out the type of flower you were going to get for him.

You hummed to yourself as you stood in front of the buckets of beautiful plants, finger held to your lip in thought as you decided which types would be best where in the tower. “Do you like these for the kitchen?” You ask, pointing to a particular type and looking to Bucky and only receiving a shrug in response, “Yeah, you’re right, they won’t work, far too flippant.” Looking around for a more appropriate bouquet you miss the smile that graces his lips at your comment. After choosing what you felt to be a sufficient number of flowers you gathered them up in your arms and paid the vendor.

It wasn’t hard to notice the stares that you were getting, of course you would be recognized, you were part of the Avengers. But every time Bucky got noticeably uncomfortable with people’s heads turning to look at you, you redirected the conversation to take his mind off of it.

“Would you like some help carrying those?” He asked after noticing you struggling to balance all of the floral arrangements as you picked out vegetables.

“Oh heavens, yes please.” You sigh in relief and smile as you hand over about half of them. When your hands brush each other you see his eyes flick to look at you but you just keep your attention on the flowers, not wanting to make him think that it wasn’t okay. You realize afterward that this is the first time you’ve ever touched him.

“Why do you like flower so much? You always talk about them when you ask me to come with you here, and your garden.” Bucky speaks up as you begin walking back to the tower.

“Well, I suppose it has to do with what I feel fire is, which is annihilation and destruction, so I like something that’s the opposite of that. I like to surround myself with life and growth because maybe it’ll cancel out in the long run.” You try to sound nonchalant as you admit something you had never said aloud, let alone to anyone else. Bucky stays silent, but you know that in his silence there is understanding.

“I picked these out for you.” You say quickly after you return to the tower and set all the purchases down and holding out a grouping of daffodils. “Daffodils symbolize rebirth and new beginnings, just as we, The Avengers, are for you.” You left out the other specific things those flowers also meant.

“Thank you, Y/N.” He tried his best to smile at you as he watched you carefully arranges the flowers in vases and put them in various places around the tower. He noticed he was the only person who got his own personal bouquet.

“FRIDAY?” Asks as he lays flat on his back in his bed, unable to fall asleep.

“Yes, Mr. Barnes?” The AI answers back.

“Look up Daffodil flower meaning,” He stated, before quickly adding a “please” at the end. While he did have to use technology a bit in his years working for Hydra, he was still confused as to how to navigate the world-wide web, so he mostly turned to FRIDAY to answer his questions.

“Daffodils symbolize chivalry, rebirth, and since they are the first flower to boom in spring, they are considered symbolize the end of winter.” FRIDAY answers back smoothly. Bucky smiles at this, it was perfect. He knew that Y/N knew enough about flowers to know the full meaning. His heart swelled with happiness and affection, she specifically chose ones that not only meant rebirth, as she had defined them, but ones that specifically marked the end of winter, and gave them to him. But he was drawn from these thoughts when the AI’s Irish lilt filled the silence of his room once again, “To a lesser degree they are known as the flower of unrequited love.” Bucky’s heart beat sped up at this and his head swam. Had Y/N meant it that way? If he were to think she just didn’t know, he would be contradicting his earlier thought of that she knew flowers and their meanings well. “Is there anything else I can do for you, Mr. Barnes?”

“No, thank you.” He croaks out. He lay there for the rest of the night, thoughts running too fast to let him find peaceful sleep.

Bucky didn’t realize he had fallen asleep until he woke up. Late, much to his dissatisfaction. It was only about half an hour later than when he normally woke up. Walking quickly down the hall he cursed to himself, he liked to be in the kitchen before you so he could see you scuffle in, wish him good morning in your far-too-chipper-for-how-early-it-was voice, and invite him to whatever it was you were doing that day, and more recently, help you grab your mug from the top shelf of the cabinets.

As he neared the kitchen he heard the sound of glass shattering followed immediately by a loud thud and an ‘oof’. Running into the room, he finds you on the floor, seemingly haven fallen off the counter, mug broken.

“Hey there, Buck-aroni, mind giving a girl a hand?” You groan, trying to push yourself up.

Bucky moves to your side to help you, “You’re bleeding,” He comments when he sees that the shattered mug had left ceramic bits sticking out of the side of your arm and leg as he pulls you to your feet. So preoccupied with worry, he fails to see the blush spreading across your cheeks at the close contact.

“Oh great,” You mutter, hissing in pain as you attempt to pull a particularly large shard from your thigh.

“I can help, I’ll go get a first aid kit.” When Bucky returned, first aid box in hand, you were sitting on a stool and attempting to pull more pieces. “Stop that.” He ordered softly, moving your hand away so he could begin pulling them out more carefully with the tweezers.

“That was my favorite mug.” You huff between curses as he began carefully working on cleaning you up, “I was trying to get it from the top shelf so I climbed on the counter, but it was wet and I slipped.”

“Why didn’t you grab a chair or wait for me to get it for you?” He glances up at you, guilt settling in his stomach.

“I was too lazy to get a chair and I didn’t want to hassle you. Plus you might have been sleeping in.” You shrug.

“Good morning Inferno, Frosty- oh god what happened here?” Tony asks as he enters the kitchen to fill his mug. You doubt he slept, based on the caffeine-wired look and dark circles under his eyes.

“I fell,” You say with a roll of your eyes. You hated your title, and everyone knew that. Being an enhanced, you came from Hydra, a different branch than Bucky, so you hadn’t crossed paths at all. You joined the Avengers a few months before he did, and right away you had expressed your dislike of your name.

“Oh right, sorry about that. Say, why don’t you like Inferno again?” Tony asked, leaning against the counter.

“An Inferno is defined as huge, out of control, fire, or simply, as Hell, because I was designed to reign hell down upon Hydra’s enemies. I don’t want to be Hell.” You replied simply, though there was an edge to your tone.

Bucky glanced up at you, this being the first time you had ever explained your hatred of your title, and your reasoning resonated deep with him.

“Well, how about we come up with a new one for you.” Tony shrugged, sipping his coffee.

“What are we coming up with a new one of?” Steve asked as he entered the kitchen after his morning run with Sam. He raised a questioning eyebrow at Bucky crouched in front of you, gauze in hand.

“I couldnt reach my mug so I stood on the counter to get it and slipped getting off and broke it, thus why I have mug shards in my arm and leg.” You answer his unspoken question, thinking it was directed at why you were hurt rather than the true meaning of as to why Bucky was the one helping you. Little did you know, when Steve and Bucky were alone, you were pretty much all Bucky could talk about. Yesterday, Steve swore the only things that came out of his best friend’s mouth were about your trip to the farmer’s market and how happy he was you gave him flowers. “But Tony suggested we come up with a new like code name for me, since I despise Inferno so much.”

“That’s a great idea! How about Blaze? That sounds cool?” Steve offered, grabbing food from the fridge.

You shook your head, wincing slightly as Bucky cleaned a larger cut. “That makes me sound like I’m a stoner or something.”

“Stoner?” Steve frowns in confusion and you just shake your head to say ‘you don’t wanna know.’

“Combustion?” Tony suggests thoughtfully, “Flaming flammable person? Magma?”

“What about Phoenix?” Bucky asks suddenly, looking up as he wraps the final cut with a Band-Aid. “This is your new life, rising from the ashes of what Hydra made you,”

“I love it.” You grin, nodding, “That’s perfect.”

Bucky smiles slightly, and Steve nods in approval of it as well, all while Tony walks away muttering about three people in the Avengers now with bird-related names.

“I was going to go work in the garden this morning but seeing as it hurts to move and I have a mission coming up and need to heal, I think I’m going to watch a movie. Want to join me, Buck-aroni?” You ask as you push yourself off the bench gingerly.

“Yeah,” He nods once, and you smile in response before leaving to go pick out a movie in the other room.

             “Buck-aroni?” Steve asks, smirking.

“Steve.” Bucky warns, shooting his friend a good-natured glare.

“I think it’s cute, the nicknames,” His best friend shrugs in response, “I’m glad to see you’re finally taking her up on her offers to spend time with you.”

             “What do you mean?”

“Every morning without fail she asks you to do something, no matter how many times you turn it down, you got to like someone to do that. We’ve all seen it, so don’t even deny it, so she obviously wants to spend time with you, and I’m glad you started doing it.” Steve shrugs, taking a bite of the toast he made.

Before Bucky could response his attention is pulled away by you calling his name to join you in the movie room.

“Good Morning, Buckaroo,” You wave at him before going to the cupboard to steal someone else’s mug for the day until you went to the store to get a new one.

This morning Bucky had made sure to be there before you, a small box with a ribbon in hand.

“I have something for you,” He avoided making eye contact and he seemed nervous, which made you frown. As he held out the box, you took it carefully.

“Bucky, you didn’t have to get me anything.” You say as you carefully untie the ribbon and open the box. Inside was a new mug, covered in vintage style flowers. “Oh, this is wonderful, thank you!” Setting the cup down you move across the table to pull him into a tight hug. Bucky stiffens at first but then wraps his arms around your waist.

“Am I interrupting something?” Sam says teasingly as he enters the room, Steve not far behind him.

“Oh no, Bucky just got me a new mug because I broke mine yesterday, isn’t is pretty?” You pull away from Bucky and hold up the mug. While you admiring the details of the flowers you missed the knowing smirks that Steve and Sam shot Bucky, and the blush that rose to his cheeks in response.

“Oh, Buckaroo, I’m working in the garden today and could use some help, want to join me?” You ask over your shoulder, pouring yourself a coffee.

             “Of course.”

You quickly pulled out your phone to snap a picture of the moment. You and Bucky had just finished weeding and potting new plants in your garden and were gearing up to head back inside, but the picture perfect moment was too much to pass up. His hair was pulled up with a hair band, a flower tucked behind his ear from when you placed it there earlier, dirt smeared on his face, and neon pink gardening gloves on his hands.

“Smile!” You command with a laugh, holding up your phone. He didn’t have enough time to think of what he was doing before he flashed you a dazzling smile that made your heart flutter.

‘Well, I have my new wallpaper.’ You think to yourself as you grin down at your phone.

“Steven Grant Rogers, stop putting my mug on the top shelf! Unlike you, I am a short person who can’t reach it!” You yell as you walk into the kitchen that night and find Steve emptying the dish washer.

“I don’t put your mug on the top shelf, I always put it on the bottom.” He puts his hands up as if in surrender before pointing to your mug. And sure enough, it was on the bottom shelf of the cupboard.

“Then how does it get to the top shelf every morning?” You frown, crossing your arms.

“I was on a mission a few days ago and someone else emptied it, maybe they did.” He shrugs before returning to putting the dishes away.

Opening a screen located inside the island, you try to remember the first day it was on the top shelf. “FRIDAY, pull of video of the kitchen from four nights ago, fast forward.” Steve comes and stands beside you as you watch the playback of the night sped up. “Normal speed.” You order as you watch Bucky come on screen and begin putting the dishes away, and sure enough, puts your mug on the top shelf. “What a little shit, I asked him to get it down for me the next morning and he didn’t even tell me he was the one who did it.” you mutter with a shake of you head.

“But I was here the next day, and I put it on the bottom shelf.” Steve prompts, putting the pieces together as to what was going on.

“FRIDAY, go to the next night, fast forward,” You say, watching intently as people whiz quickly on the screen, including Steve putting the dishes away, as he said. Leaning against the counter, you and Steve waited as the foot traffic stopped and the lights went off, “I don’t understand, how did it-“ but you were cut short when the lights turned back on around 2am, and Bucky walked in, opened the cupboard, and put your mug on the top shelf. “Pause, please.” You ask FRIDAY and the picture stops. “Why would he do that?” Frowning, you ask the question more to yourself than to Steve. “Go to 24 hours later please,” And at the same time the next night, you saw Bucky come in and move your mug yet again. “I don’t understand.”

“Well, you said you asked him for help the first day, right?”

“Yeah and the next day I was just going to grab a stool but he grabbed it for me before I could.” Frowning in thought, you dismiss FRIDAY and close the screen.

“It could be because he liked helping you?” Steve offered, hoping you’d pick up on what was happening. You were smart, just oblivious sometimes. “That was the day he went to the farmer’s market with you, right? It could be that that gave him an excuse to be by you? You could ask him about it.”

“Could be.” You nod, staring to understand what was going on. “I’ll ask him about it.”

And by ask you meant wait until 2am and catch him in the act.

At around 1:45 you crept softly into the kitchen, keeping the lights off so Bucky wouldn’t think anything was out of the ordinary. Waiting in the darkness, you felt your heartbeat pick up with nerves. What if Steve was wrong? But why else would Bucky move your mug every day? When you heard footsteps approaching, you panicked and scurried softly away, staying low and peaking around the corner as Bucky entered the kitchen. You knew it was weird to spy, but you didn’t have the courage to confront him. You figured, tomorrow morning, you will quickly try to get the cup yourself without him interfering, and if he does, you’ll stay up the next night and confront him for sure.

“Good morning, Bucky!” You try to sound as normal as possible as you stroll into the kitchen.

“No nickname this morning?” He asks, a small amused smile on his lips that makes your heart swell with happiness.

“To be honest I’m running out of them. I thought about Buckaboo but that just sounds weird.” You laugh when he scrunches up his nose at the nickname, “See?” You tease as you open up the cupboard and prepare yourself to jump on the counter again. After making sure it was dry this time, of course. Putting your hands on the counter, you jump up, but as soon as your feet leave the ground you feel two strong hands on your waist, lifting you to reach your mug. After you clasped onto your mug tightly, he lowered you back to the ground. “Thank you,” You murmured, turning around to face him.

“Of course,” Bucky smiled, lingering in front of you for a moment before returning to his spot at the breakfast bar. After pouring your coffee and adding the amount of sugar you like, you took your place next to him, falling into your usual routine of talking at him. Though, today, he talked back, looked up from the paper, made eye contact, added comments here and there. You didn’t think you had been happier in years.

“I was thinking about going for a walk this morning, would you like to join me?” Bucky asks softly during a lull in conversation, turning the tables. You can tell he’s nervous by the way he’s fidgeting and avoiding eye contact, but his words are smooth, probably from rehearing it repeatedly.

“I’d love to, Bucky.” You grin.

You walked along the streets until you reached a small park. Collectively, you decided to sit on a bench and people watch for a bit, enjoying the nice weather.

“Bucky,” You say after a moment and he turns to look at you, “You do know there’s a video camera in the kitchen, right?” Watching as his face goes void of color and he starts to stammer something out but you just smile softly and hold up your hand to stop him. “Just tell me why, I want to understand.”

He takes a deep breath, looking down at his hands as he tries to formulate the right thing to say. “Every morning you always ask me to do something, anything, with you, to show, what I think and hope is, your affection. Or at least that you aren’t afraid of me, and enjoy my company. I guess I was looking for my own version of that to show you the same things.”

Scooting over on the bench you wrap your arms around him and pull him into a tight hug, “Thank you,”

“I looked up the full meaning of daffodils too, by the way.” He says as you pull away, and it was your turn for your face to go pale.

“I knew you shared the same sentiment about your title as I did, so I figured a flower that marked the end of winter would be appropriate.” You quickly tried to cover your tracks, hoping that was all that came up when he searched the meaning.

“It’s not unrequited.” He says simply, ignoring your explanation.

“it isn’t?” You choke out, you voice small as you look at him.

“It isn’t.” A large and genuine smile graces his lips, “Thank you for not giving up on me every time I turned you down for your morning activities.”

“Of course,” A bashful blush rises to your cheeks as you glance between his eyes and his smile.

“Can I kiss you?” He asks softly, and when you nod he closes the distance between you two, pressing a soft and sweet kiss to your lips.

[Extended ending]

“What the hell is this?” Natasha throws a tabloid magazine down on the table in front of you and Bucky as you drink your morning coffee together the next day.

You pick up the magazine and study the front page with your boyfriend. There was a picture of you two kissing in the park plastered across the front and smaller photos of your morning walks and farmer’s market visit scattered in the corners, headline reading “INFERNO AND WINTER SOLDIER COUPLE NAME: TEMPERATE?”

“Temperate, I dig it.” You nod, tossing the magazine back at the other woman and turning to Bucky, “What do you think?”

“I feel like Sam personally called them to give them that idea.” He chuckles with a shake of his head.

“I meant what the hell as in why didn’t you tell me you were together!” Natasha scolded you with her hands on her hips.

Yes, I see the rebirth symbolism. No, I don’t think that it means the end of 1D.

Obviously, Harry wants to grow with this project, present himself in a new light with the public. A lot of the symbolism we’ve seen so far – emerging from water, sunrise/set, “Sign of the Times”, the sheer drama of the promo – indicates a maturation, a moving on from the past. But wouldn’t that be what anyone who has been in Harry’s situation would want? For the last seven years, he’s had an image that isn’t true to who he is forced upon him. If he’s going to counter that image and show who he really is, it has to be a radical shift. Especially for people who only give him 3 seconds of thought before reaching a conclusion and moving on to the next thing to cross their timeline. But while marketing needs to be blunt, obvious, Harry himself is capable of complexity, nuance, balance. I think it does a disservice to him to reduce his complexity to a marketing message that is aimed primarily at those who don’t know him.

Growing up, maturing, coming into your own doesn’t require disposing everything from your past. It’s about holding onto the parts that work for your future and putting away childish things. And I think that while Harry considers the shallow, womanizer image to be a childish thing, I don’t think he thinks his bandmates or the collective, matured creativity they have yet to share to be a childish thing. Nothing he’s ever said has indicated that. The image he has to wrestle with comes from how he was marketed – not from his bandmates or their experiences as a unit. Harry has never said anything to indicate that 1D is something he wants to move past or set away as a childish thing. Like any curious, intelligent, creative young person, Harry – and Louis, Niall, and Liam – wants to grab hold of everything he can and figure out which parts fit his mature self. Change happens. Change is good. Change is stimulating. Change doesn’t mean forgetting the past. All of them will change and grow.

I know we haven’t heard from Harry directly on the topic, but the others have reassured us time and again that 1D has a future. I know they lie, but they lie when they can’t tell the truth and hedging/avoiding would essentially give away the truth. When asked about anyone leaving the band before Zayn’s departure, they couldn’t say anything other than a definitive “No” or it would be an effective “Yes.” Hedging wouldn’t have worked. But it would work in this situation. “We’re all just focused on our own work right now. We will have to see how we feel in the future.” “I really hope so, but we needed a break. We can’t make any decisions right now.” etc. But they didn’t do that; they clearly said that 1D would be back. And we haven’t heard much from Harry on anything, which I think is part of his effort to establish a dramatic shift in his image, so his silence on the matter doesn’t really tell us much. I can’t imagine the others would be so definitive if they knew that ¼ was intending to move on without them.

I once thought that announcing firm future plans for the band would be the best so that they can do their solo work without the doubts hanging over their heads. I think I was wrong about this being best – to announce future band plans would place a limit on the time possible to devote to their solo projects and would make it seem like those projects aren’t as important and are just gap fillers. I don’t think they want that. I think they want it all – to have full, fruitful solo careers and then take what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown into a new era as a band, as a team. They were kids when 1D started; they need/want to grow up now. Their growth was stunted in the factory-produced boyband under the old regime. I am sure that contractual issues shape the way it has to happen, but I think these solo projects are their chance to grow and discover who they are as artists and people. That doesn’t mean leaving behind the good parts from a not totally great experience. Maturity is being able to separate the childish things from those that shape who you are going forward.

The serpent, or snake, is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols and represent dual expression of good and evil.  Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing. The ouroboros is a symbol of eternity and continual renewal of life.

Confession: Arrow 5x17 Review (Kapiushon)

Episodes like “Kapiushon” are the reason I love Arrow.  Taunt, dramatic and emotional storytelling that is driving towards some larger truth.  We kid about Oliver’s manpain sometimes. Sometimes out of frustration for the things he does. Sometimes for Arrow’s laser focus on the central character, occasionally at the cost of a supporting character’s story. But Oliver Queen is the center of this story for a reason.

Man or a Monster by Sam Tinnesz and Zayde Wolf

When you close your eyes, what do you see?

Do you hold the light, or is darkness underneath?

In your hands, there’s a touch that can heal

But in those same hands, is the power to kill

Are you a man, or a monster?

Are you a man, or a monster?

Are you a man, or a monster?

When you look at yourself, are you a man

Or a monster?

It’s so hard to tell which side you’re on

One day is Hell, the next day is the dawn

The lines are blurred, you keep rubbing your eyes

The tables turn, now it’s time to survive

Are you a man, or a monster?

Are you a man, or a monster?

Are you a man, or a monster?

When you look at yourself, are you a man

Or a monster?

You can’t take back the damage you’ve done

Oh, you can hide, but you can’t run

No, you can’t take back the damage you’ve done

Afraid of what you might become

A man or a monster

Arrow is driving towards bigger questions with this character.  Who is Oliver Queen? Is he a hero? Is he a man at all? Or is he something much worse? This deep examination should force us to reflect on our own humanity, compassion and moral compass. It’s a lofty goal for a television show that’s “just on the CW” or “just a comic book show” but these are questions most shows are too afraid to ask. Arrow isn’t about Oliver’s manpain. It’s about his trauma. Real, excruciatingly painful, trauma and Oliver has to deal with it or he’ll never truly be free.

Arrow is pushing Oliver, and us, towards these questions because they require answers. Since Oliver is the only one who can provide those answers, Arrow forced him to face the darkness tonight. So he can find his way to the light. Real, lasting, life sustaining, light. This show was never just about a man becoming a hero. This show is about saving a man’s soul… but first we have to start with confession.

Let’s dig in…

My favorite parts of the movie, Call Me by Your Name

This is INSANELY long (so obviously an insane amount of spoilers), jumbled, and in order of when I thought of each item (except for the Montaigne stuff) As long as this post is, there are tons of other moments that stick out, but one has to make choices! I tried to keep comparison to the book at a minimum as one can judge adaptations on their adherence/truthfulness to the source material or completely as its own thing (both are valid), and it’s easier to do the latter in this case. I’ve also kept it mostly positive, though as I’ve mentioned previously, I did have a few issues with the film (feel free to ask any questions you might have about that or anything else CMBYN related). Also, I need to see it again. As soon as possible.

*When Elio has the nosebleed (no footsie though ugh), he goes inside and sits on the floor and Oliver comes looking for him. The way Elio asks Oliver to sit with him breaks my heart. Just a subtle hint of plea. Everything that happens during that sit-down also fucked my life. It’s burned into my very being. Every look, kiss, touch, word.

* There’s this wonderful housefly that, throughout the movie, shows up occasionally to hang out with Elio when he’s thinking about Oliver. I could probably write a paper on what I think the significance of the fly is, and my feelings about the fly, but really, it was just a fly- a nice touch by either Luca or Ivory.

* The desperation in Elio’s kiss after he breaks down crying during the peach scene. How is Timothée not actually feeling that at that moment? Talk about acting. It was spectacular. Everything about his reaction was spectacular. The crying, the sad embarrassment for crying, the clutching at Oliver. (Aside:Oliver not eating the peach was unacceptable and Elio’s reaction being switched from being overwhelmed that someone felt something for him so strongly that they would do such a thing to being upset that Oliver is leaving soon was annoying.)

* The hilarious lunch conversation with the extremely talkative, not very polite, guests. This conversation needs to be witnessed and experienced, because it’s so funny. At some point they start insulting each other- someone gets called an “asshole” I think, but the expressions and tones of voice of everyone involved stay exactly the same, so it’s hard to even tell who’s being called an asshole, etc. Like this is just everyday conversation.

* After Elio says goodbye to Oliver at the train station, he sits around for a bit trying to process and calm down and then, because what else to do in this lovely family?, he calls his mom. As he asks her to come pick him up, he breaks down (I did, too). The shot is perfect. He’s in the phone booth and we’re outside and a bit away. He starts off the call facing us, but during the emotional bits, he turns his back. He’s hiding his crying from the world (including the viewer), but not from his mother, who can hear him losing it. This is a lovely private family moment, one of many that we’re privy to throughout the film.

* On Elio and Oliver’s trip, there’s a shot of Oliver’s face as Elio sleeps, looking completely at peace. Oliver is sitting on the bed, looking wrecked, and remorseful, and like he wants to stop what’s about to happen. The next scene is their goodbye hug at the train station. I wonder if Oliver sitting there that night knows that very soon he’s going to break Elio’s heart. Not just by leaving, but in telling him that he’s getting married (Over the phone? Really Oliver?) I’ve never been totally sure just how “on and off” Oliver and his future wife actually were. We never really get to know much about Oliver. In both the book and the movie, he’s more a mirror of Elio than a separate character. We only know him through and via Elio. So, in that way, is Oliver’s “on and off” relationship the same as Elio’s “on and off” relationship with Marzia? Where they hang out and fuck, but Elio holds back everything important? I don’t know.

* On the phone call when Oliver tells Elio he’s getting married, Oliver asks, “Do you mind?” A perfect, though strange, bit from the book to carry over- those are the words someone uses when asking permission to do something. What if Elio had said yes? Was Oliver seeking an admission that Elio loved him and wanted to be with him? Was he looking for an ego boost? Was he just asking an awkward question? Oliver is such a mystery to me.

*Anytime Armie/Oliver danced, I laughed. Man, that was some awful, but adorable dancing. The only time I didn’t laugh was when Elio got up on the dance floor and danced with Marzia right next to where Oliver was dancing. That time, I held my breath.

*The morning after they have sex (make love?) for the first time and Elio goes after Oliver into town. They walk a bit to have some privacy and while walking, for a few seconds they “hold hands” with just a finger or two tangled. So insanely lovely.

*After Oliver and Elio talk about how open Oliver is about showing his Judaism by wearing his Star of David, the next image is of Elio coming up for air while swimming in the lake, his Star of David around his neck. It’s a rebirth via water being symbolized, so a baptism of sorts. Oliver, simply by being Oliver, allowed so many hidden parts of Elio, parts Elio felt ashamed of, to be reborn into things that were not shameful, that were beautiful, things to be celebrated and nurtured.

*After Elio receives the note that they’ll meet at midnight and subsequently becomes seriously obsessed with his watch, they’re sitting outside, Oliver, Elio, and Elio’s mother. Elio gets up to leave the table and Oliver, so nonchalantly, asks Elio for the time. It’s such a sexy and funny way of Oliver reminding Elio what’s going to happen that night. And ratcheting up their respective anticipation.

*Sufjan. Sufjan. Sufjan. I can’t even.

*The way Elio says Oliver’s name. So often he says it as if he’s asking for everything he’s ever desired. There’s so much longing and affection.

*The sight and the sound of Oliver eagerly removing his belt the first night that he and Elio sleep together is super sexy. He’s kneeling over Elio, who’s lying between Oliver’s legs and they both look desperate. The sound and look of the leather as it’s being pulled quickly through Oliver’s belt loops is the perfect symbol for that desperation.

*It was completely genius, whoever’s decision it was, to have Elio constantly pressing himself against Oliver, whether it’s Elio’s head against Oliver’s chest or Elio’s whole body as he’s, literally, climbing Oliver, jumping into his arms, pulling Oliver against him as Elio leans back against a wall, etc. It’s like Elio is trying to absorb Oliver into himself. Like he can’t possibly ever get close enough. Like he wants to crawl inside Oliver and make himself a little home in his tummy or in his chest, by his heart- maybe take a nap surrounded by Oliver. Like he simply cannot get enough of this man.

*Elio’s hairstyle at the end of the movie & every single time Elio did his slide dance move. What glory was that?

*That one lovely shot of snow before the last scene. Foreshadowing the cooling off of Elio and Oliver’s relationship, and letting the viewer know that their summer, which was, vicariously, ours, is officially over. Also, snow is just beautiful.

*The night that Elio confesses his feelings to Oliver, Oliver comes back late. Elio, thinking that Oliver has been out with someone else, is restless in bed, and mutters, “Traitor,” as Oliver uses their adjoining bathroom. Then when Oliver closes the bathroom door without acknowledging Elio, Elio rolls over again says, sadly, “Traitor.” The word enlarges Elio’s desire- makes it so much more than just lust. He’s saying that they have something important together, something that can be betrayed. The fact that he doesn’t consider his actions with Marzia to be traitorous makes perfect sense to me. He knows his own feelings, that Oliver is, for whatever reason, infinitely more important to him than Marzia. But what Oliver feels is, at that time a mystery.

*Elio tells Oliver that they have to sit in the backseat of the car because Anchise usually drives as Elio’s father navigates. Then Elio’s father comes along and tells Anchise that he doesn’t need to drive and then invites Oliver into the front seat to be navigator. Elio is adorably upset that he doesn’t get to ride shotgun (understandably!). But also probably a bit unpleased that he doesn’t get to share that small backseat with Oliver. Ha.

*This part right here, when Elio asks for a truce and Oliver offers the hand of the statue. It should have been funny, but it was actually just very sweet and hurt my heart a bit.

*As Oliver and Elio leave on their trip, Chiara rides up on her bicycle. She’s late, though, and they’re already on the bus which is pulling away. The borderline sarcastic wave that Oliver gives her is pretty funny and Elio’s mother inviting Chiara to dinner with a thrown in, “Bring Marzia with you” is just ouch. But the look on Elio’s face as Oliver sits beside him, like this is everything. He’s sitting here with Oliver, going away with Oliver (!!!) and he seems so joyful, but also overwhelmed by that joy, and like he’s seconds away from crying. Lovely lovely acting by Tim.

* Elio’s father is pretty much perfect at fathering fatherly. And Michael Stuhlbarg is magnificent in this film. His final speech to Elio about Oliver, and love, and life is spectacular, both in the book and the film. The line that always makes me cry, whether reading, listening, or watching is:

We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new.

I’ve had one of those lives where this would have really been nice to hear when I was younger. But since I kind of want to rip out every memory I have of this book/movie, to cure myself of too many feelings, it might not have mattered.

* Also in Elio’s father speech is my favorite quote about love. I was ecstatic that it was in the book so having it in the movie made me doubly ecstatic. The quote, by Montaigne about his platonic male friend, is untranslated in the book (& I don’t know if anyone bothers to look that stuff up), while in the movie, there are subtitles (the translation in the movie is different than my preferred which is below, but whatevs). Below is a larger portion of the quote, the part in bold is the bit in the book/movie:

Si on me presse, continue-t-il, de dire pourquoi je l'aimais, je sens que cela ne se peut exprimer qu'en répondant: parce que c'était lui; parce que c'était moi.

If you press me to say why I loved him, I can say no more than it was because he was he, and because I was I.

From the book:

“You’re too smart not to know how rare, how special, what you two had was.”

“Oliver was Oliver,” I said, as if that summed things up.

“Parce que c’était lui, parce que c’était moi,” my father added, quoting Montaigne’s all-encompassing explanation for his friendship with Etienne de la Boétie.”

I can’t explain why I’ve loved particular people most in my life- we were just the kind of people who would love each other. We spoke to something in the other. I’ve always appreciated the joyful, but also, almost resigned (potentially tragic) quality of such an acknowledgement. “We were meant to love each other” alongside “I couldn’t have stopped it even if I’d tried.” It’s perfect for Elio and Oliver.

“There’s a certain undeniable, exciting energy that comes with spring. It reminds me of running around my family’s farm in France and selling vegetables with my father at the local market,” said chef Daniel Boulud, who thinks of the glorious return of vibrant produce and herbs as a symbol of rebirth, creativity, and hope. In honor of the season, we asked some of our favorite chefs from around the country (as spotted at the recent South Beach Wine and Food Festival) to share their most prized spring ingredients.

danger days is such an album

i think the reason it makes me cry so much is that it’s disguised as a gay desert party that’s happy and colorful and boy do i wish it was just that. but not only do they all die in the videos, but the songs are sadder than they seem and they represent growing up and moving on (and getting better!). the songs themselves are so upbeat, but they hold so much sadness and power. like, the “remember me”s at the beginning of the only hope for me is you break my fucking heart. “you can run away with me any time you want” from summertime? that lyric and that whole song is just so emotional. “we can live forever if you’ve got the time” from save yourself i’ll hold them back? wow. the entirety of sing is a message of hope with an undertone of sadness that’s punctuated by the video. there’s so much death and rebirth and death symbolism and i can’t articulate it right now but i will someday soon. that album just means so much to me.

keith liking hippos: it’s not that deep

we, as a collective: the fact that hippos are associated with rebirth can be connected to Keith becoming the black paladin, but we can also connect this to Sheith, as Keith continues to save Shiro over and over again. Hippos swim in water, which is wet, and you know what else is wet? Snow.

See here, in episode 5 of Voltron s3, “The Journey”, where Shiro wakes up in snow.

When characters are shown to be in water sources, it’s usually used to symbolize fertility, or baptism (rebirth). The fact that this episode is also called “The Journey” could possibly allude to a journey down the river, which is similar to a woman’s water breaking, leading to a baby being born. But here, the “water” is frozen and not flowing; Shiro is refusing change (or he’s a clone).

Keith is the one who tends to him, which is shown in the bedroom. This role is symbolic of a nursing mother and her newborn infant (similar to the red lion and Keith himself). This is telling of how protective Keith is of Shiro, but it also foreshadows the idea that Keith will be the one to change him. Although, at the moment, Keith is more worried about the well-being of Shiro and so he tries to make it seem like the old days, except it’s just not working.

Shiro’s new makeover also makes him look younger, which again goes back to the idea of rebirth, but he’s also wearing Keith’s clothes. While this could just be a mother dressing her newborn, it actually emphasizes the fact that the two have switched places.

Shiro used to be Keith’s (beloved) mentor, who guided him through the Garrison but now it’s Keith’s turn to be the guardian (mom?). Keith is black paladin and Shiro has no place, he is borrowing Keith’s. Keith is the one insisting on the fact that Shiro is black paladin; Keith is reluctant to pilot the black lion because it’s Shiro’s lion, Shiro’s bayard.

It is shown that Shiro cannot accept that he is no longer in charge. He refuses to back down because he believes that his role is to save everyone. He is the “role model” but he never shows his OWN weaknesses, which hinders the growing relationship between him and his team members.

See here, Keith and Shiro in this intimate setting yet not looking at each other. Keith has his arms crossed and looks closed off, while Shiro is looking down, possibly reflecting on his past, but refusing to speak of it. It shows how close the two are, yet how they refuse to confront each other because they don’t want to set the other off.

Keith sees that Shiro is a changed man who has experienced horrible things that greatly traumatized him, but the two have never confronted the problem; instead they dance around it. For the team to come together and actually be successful, Shiro will have to change, be “reborn”, and accept the situation for what it is.

This can be connected to the fact that Shiro likes cats and cats hate water which emphasize the idea that Shiro is unwilling to change as of now. But snow will eventually melt, especially with Keith in charge because he was originally the red paladin, which is associated with fire. Also, a cat killed Shiro in the original series, but this rebirth symbolism could serve as hope for us because this means change. Shiro has come back to life (albeit maybe as some clones).

Sheith is the real slow-burn relationship, because Keith will melt the false exterior that Shiro tries to keep.

Power couple where they inspire each other to be their best #confirmed.
