His dreams were plagued with images of Lucia crying and begging for him to save her from shadows that moved toward her like clawed hands. He finally reached her and pulled her into his arms. “I love you,” he whispered. “And I will never let anything hurt you.” He slid his fingers through long silky hair, which unexpectedly changed from ebony to pale gold. He woke, lurching himself up to a sitting position, coated in sweat. It was dawn. “Enough,” he mumbled. Enough of nightmares.
I was sitting her, just thinking about school and life when I realized that today is Friday and in exactly 19 hours I will be watching Legacy of Mandalore. “y/n will lead the mission, as they are one of our most capable rebel leaders.” Cassian gestured to you, and everyone nodded. “Alright then, it’s settled. Good luck, rebels, I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”
Everyone began to file out of the room, but Cassian quickly called out to you. Hearing his name, you turned around to face him, your arms crossed over his chest.
“Yes?” you asked, tensely. He ignored your tone, trying to lighten the mood.
“You did very well on your last mission,” he remarked, but you didn’t react. “That’s why I chose you to lead this one. I hope you don’t mind.”
“It’s fine.” you responded, and he sighed. Cassian and you were good friends, but lately he felt that you had been distant and cold towards him. You would give you short answers when you did talk, but otherwise you would avoid him.
“What’s wrong?” he finally demanded, and you remained expressionless. “Why are you suddenly shutting me out?”
“It’s for the best.” you pressed his lips together, and he raised his eyebrows. “I almost got killed last mission. I realized it’s too risky to become close to people. One day I’ll get killed and I’ll end up hurting everyone. I know what it’s like to lose the people you love, and I don’t want to inflict that pain onto people.”
“That’s ridiculous.” he snapped, and you frowned. “We’re all putting our lives at risk here. I think you’re just afraid to be happy.”
“I’m afraid to be happy?” you scowled. “Cassian, I probably don’t deserve to be happy. All the lives I’ve had to take for this Rebellion, it bears down on me everyday. I don’t deserve to…”
“y/n, listen to me.” Cassian stepped towards you, but you ignored him.
“You are all such good people, I don’t deserve to have you guys in my life-”
“Will you just shut up for a moment so I can say something nice to you!” Cassian suddenly exclaimed, and you closed your mouth. “You are one of our best rebel leaders. You are strong and determined, and you cannot afford to let the burdens of your past affect you now. Trying to isolate ourselves will only make our jobs harder, y/n. I’ve done plenty of things I regret too, but talking to people and letting them in will make it more tolerable. Please, believe me.”
He reached out and gently took your hand, and you relaxed slightly.
“Do you really mean that?” you asked quietly, and Cassian nodded.
“I am here for you, y/n.” he said firmly, and you gave him a grateful smile. “Whatever you do, I promise I will be there for you.”
