Reading List by Chris and Kate

So this year my English class is focused on American writers (last year was global studies). Last year, I got really into Chinese writers but I feel like it’s important to read Americans too, and not just the assigned ones (Dreams from My Father? Miserable). My Dad loves Spanish writers but he also really loves American Classics. So my Dad and I just went through a list of American authors and books that I MUST read. Here they are:

  • Ralph Ellison, The Invisible Ma
  • Edgar Allen Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Writings
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and other Stories from the Jazz Age
  • Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • Truman Capote, Tree of Night
  • Cormac McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses****
  • John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men
  • Upton Sinclair, The Jungle
  • John Irving, The Cider House Rules****
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • James Jones, From Here to Eternity
  • Sinclair Lewis, Babbitt
  • Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie
  • Ernest Hemingway, For Whom The Bell Tolls
  • Philip Roth, I Married A Communist
  • Saul Bellow, Seize the Day
  • Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
  • William S. Burroughs, The Naked Lunch
  • Eugene O'Neill, Moon for the Misbegotten

So there are all of the books I plan to read this year! If there’s some egregious mistake, never fear, I’ve probably already read it or will in class this year (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby). But if you know of an amazing classic, let me know!
