On this day in music history: July 10, 1900 - “His Master’s Voice” is registered with the U.S. Patent Office as the trademark for the Victor Recording Company (later known as RCA Victor). The company’s logo is a painting of a terrier named “Nipper” looking at the horn of a phonograph machine. The painting is by British artist Francis Barraud who is Nipper’s caretaker after his brother Mark Henry Barraud passes away in 1887. Nipper himself lives to be eleven years old before he dies in 1895. The image becomes an icon and one of the most recognized corporate trademarks of the 20th century and beyond.
