Moana Had Brothers?! Meet 'em in Exclusive Deleted Scene From Disney's Animated Blockbuster

How far did Moana go from the initial drawing-board version? Fans who snapped up $565 million worth of tickets worldwide might not recognize the story of the plucky teen wayfarer as originally conceived.

With the Oscar-contending animated hit heading home (the Digital HD version arrives Tuesday while the Blu-ray/DVD hits shelves on March 7), Yahoo Movies has an exclusive deleted scene (watch it above) that shows how the title heroine evolved as a character.

As they set up the clip, directors Ron Clements (the one with the beard) and John Musker reveal where it originally had fit in the film.

“This is a very early scene in the movie, where Moana had six older brothers,” says Clements, “and this was a showcase for Moana’s sailing proficiencies and how she really kind of outdoes her brothers.”

“We lost her brothers and wanted to make her less proficient when she was sailing so this scene went away,” adds Musker. “But it’s a fun scene.”

“The scene went away as did her six older brothers,” says Clements. “Somehow she became an only child and probably is much happier as an only child.”

The “Lost Brothers” deleted scene is one of seven included on the home edition, along with a Lin-Manuel Miranda tune, “Warrior Face,” that also wound up on the cutting-room floor.

As Musker and Clements explained earlier to Yahoo Movies, they ultimately decided the film is about Moana’s journey of self-discovery and empowerment and the story was streamlined accordingly. For example, the directors said an early iteration of the story had Maui performing more heroics in the climactic battle, but, after discussing with some female coworkers, the filmmakers realized Moana didn’t need Maui’s help in defeating the vengeful goddess Te Kā. Likewise, the subplot with her battling a half-dozen brothers for the attention of their chieftain father felt superfluous.

Disney is notorious for its intense story-vetting process, with many films undergoing radical changes, and Moana is no exception. Musker and Clements, whose joint credits include Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Princess and the Frog, told us earlier that the heroine’s breakout sidekick, the daft rooster Heihei, was almost excised from the film because they had trouble figuring out how best to organically fit him in the story.

In addition to the excised scenes and song, the Digital HD and Blu-ray versions of Moana will include the Maui-Moana short “Gone Fishing,” the theatrical short “Inner Workings,” music videos, making-of featurettes, director’s commentary, and a guide to the film’s Easter eggs.

if blurb requests are still open, would you mind maybe writing one for sirius based on the princess and the frog? like, the line where naveen is translating and is like 'i love you, i adore you - what? i'm just translating!!!' ??

I love that song…Is there a character more pure than Ray the firefly????

It was a small cafe in Paris. A group of you had opted to take a brief trip to get away from the stresses of home. A singer was crooning from the small band stage as people sat and milled around, either engrossed in their conversations or far too tipsy to care.

Your group had spread out as the night had gone on. Lily and James were off to one side, seemingly forgetting anyone else was present. Marlene was off with some French guy she’d met. Remus, Peter, and Dorcas were having a spirited debate as to who would be eaten first on a desert island. You found yourself focusing on the music, Sirius seated next to you, surprisingly quiet.

“Je t’adore. Je t’aime” trilled the singer.

“I adore you, I love you,” muttered Sirius out of nowhere.

You turned to him in shock. Had you heard him correctly? Surely he wasn’t talking to you, right?

Sirius shrugged, his eyes twinkling, “Just translating.”

“Oh, right,” you nodded, slightly disappointed.

Sirius watched you closely. Had he imagined the way your shoulders sagged when he claimed to simply be translating. Had he detected a hint of sadness in your eyes? A small frown on your lips?

“Want to dance?” Sirius asked, his eyebrow quirked.

“This isn’t exactly a dance hall, Sirius,” you chuckled.

He stood, taking your hand and pulling you to your feet with him. He led you to a small open area in front of the stage.

As the song continued, Sirius guided you across the ‘dance’ floor, twirling and dipping you every so often.

By the time the song came to an end, you once again found yourself disappointed. As you began to walk back towards your table, Sirius stopped you.

Pulling you tight to his chest, he breathed into your ear, “I’ll admit I wasn’t just translating. I very much adore you and I seem to be falling even deeper in love with you.”

Your mouth fell open momentarily as you processed his words. He began to say something else but you swiftly cut him off by pressing your lips to his. The kiss was filled with the words neither of you seemed to be able to say and it ended far too soon.

As you pulled away, both of you flushed, your ears were greeted by the sound of applause and your eyes met with a room full of joyous onlookers.

“I think we have an audience,” you laughed, burying your face in Sirius’ shoulder.

“Shall we take this somewhere more private, then?” he murmured, his grin evident in his warm voice.

Let's Talk About The Runaways

Our Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. drought will soon come to an end…but not this week.

Last week, I talked a bit about what the upcoming The Inhumans show might look like. There is another show, however, that I am looking forward to much more.

The Runaways (no, not the band) was a comic created by comic legend Brian K. Vaughan and even had an arc written by Joss Whedon himself. It is beloved by many, and I am not the exception to this rule - these characters are more near and dear to my heart than any other Marvel characters.

The series has been a favorite at Marvel Studios and has been strongly considered for a TV series or movie pretty much as long as it has existed, even going as far as opening casting on a 2012 movie before dropping it in favor of The Avengers. Recently, it has been picked up by Hulu for a pilot episode and a first season of written scripts, and has started hiring writers. Fingers crossed!

The Runaways is about a group of teenagers who find out that their parents are secretly a cabal of supervillains running Los Angeles called The Pride, who are working in servitude of giant god-like creatures called the Gibborim bent on destroying the world. The kids inherit their super-abilities and make a run for it, determined to take their parents down - except one, who is secretly working with The Pride.

Let’s take a look at the heroes themselves so we can have an idea of who might appear.

Alex Wilder

Sixteen year old Alex is the first Runaway we meet, and is the voice of reason - he refuses to take a “codename” and has no superpower, aside from using his superior logic and intellect and a decoder ring to translate the Pride’s manifesto, The Abstract. Alex leads the Runaways, much like his parents and crime bosses Geoffrey and Catherine Wilder lead The Pride.

Nico Minoru

Nico is a sixteen year old geek-girl-turned-goth, and the object of Alex’s affection. After finding out her parents Tina and Robert are dark sorcerers, Nico steals her mother’s soul-bound weapon The Staff of One, a magical artifact capable of casting any spell - but can never cast the same spell twice. She takes on the codename “Sister Grimm”, from her old online screen name. For a little crossover action, look out for her mom Tina Minoru and her Staff of One guarding the sanctums in Doctor Strange!

Karolina Dean

Karolina makes being the seventeen year old vegan sweetheart daughter of Hollywood superstars Frank and Leslie Dean look easy, and for her it was; at least, until she had to come to terms with her feelings for other girls, and the fact that she is the daughter of evil aliens trying to destroy the world. Taking off her MedAlert bracelet, Karolina assumes her colorful true Majesdane form, a bright being of rainbow light flying through the air. It’s no wonder she calls herself “Lucy in the Sky”.

Gertrude Yorkes

Rebellious and cynical fifteen year old Gert always suspected her parents Dale and Stacey were evil, she just didn’t think they were time-travelling cat burglars from the future. Breaking into her own house for clues against the Pride, she discovers her birthright - a genetically engineered deinonychus that is psychically linked to her, commissioned by her parents in the future. Gert decides on the codename “Arsenic” to match her pet dinosaur’s name, “Old Lace”.

Chase Stein

The oldest of the group, eighteen year old Chase is seen as a disappointment by his parents Janet and Victor for choosing athletics over grades. This is understandable, as he discovers his parents are actually mad scientists, and he steals a pair of X-Ray goggles designed to see through clothes and flame-controlling gauntlets called “Fistigons”. Dubbed “Talkback” for his big mouth, Chase is also the primary pilot of the kids’ robotic frog-like vehicle they stole from their parents, The Leapfrog.

Molly Hayes

The youngest of the original group, energetic eleven year old Molly has an affinity for goofy animal hats and cutesy-talk - though she is actually much smarter than she lets on. She doesn’t fully believe her parents Gene and Alice are evil telepathic mutants like the other Runaways claim. A mutant herself, Molly has super-strength, calling herself “Princess Powerful” (though the rest of the team insists on “Bruiser”). Molly gets mad when superheroes try to separate her from her friends, beating up the likes of Wolverine, Darkhawk, Punisher and Cloak. After exerting her abilities, Molly immediately falls asleep.

Victor Mancha

A later addition to the team after one of the Runaways dies, Victor thinks he is a regular geeky sixteen year old - until he discovers that those were false memories implanted in his two year old android brain by his creator, Ultron. Victor is originally taken hostage by the Runaways after discovering from a time-travelling Gertrude from the future named “Heroine” that he will become a supervillain named “Victorious”, and soon after learns that he is an android capable of manipulating anything with a electromagnetic field.

Seventeen year old Prince/Princess Xavin is an alien Super-Skrull in training.  Having no fixed gender, Xavin freely shapeshifts between human, skrull, male and female forms at will. First introduced as Karolina’s betrothed in an intergalactic arranged marriage, the stuck-up and militaristic Xavin becomes an indispensable member of the team, possessing all the abilities of the Fantastic Four and more: shape-shifting, pyrokinesis, invisibility, rock-like skin, psionic force fields, super-strength and elasticity.

Klara Prast

Being a fellow mutant and close to Molly’s age, twelve year old Klara immediately bonds with “Princess Powerful”. Born on a farm in Switzerland, Klara emigrated to America after her mother discovered her ability to control and communicate with plants and deemed her a witch, marrying her off to a abusive middle-aged man - hey, it was the 1900’s, after all. Klara was rescued from the past and brought to present day by Karolina Dean. Still very conservative in her thinking, the shy and quiet Klara struggles to adapt to modern life, escaping in a new-found love for video games and her friends. Molly calls her “Tower of Flower”, but she much prefers “Rose Red”.

So the Blue Fairy is the North/Wishing Star. Neverland is the second star to the Right. Raymond is Becomes the star to the left making Evangeline the star to the right. Knowing the fact that all Disney movies are some how connected the following head cannons can be drawn:

1. The blue fairy’s name is Evangeline.

2. Neverland was created by Evangeline to grant Peter Pan’s wish for youth and freedom.

3. Neverland is not actually the second star to the right but in fact it draws magic from Evangeline to open a portal to neverland.

4. Raymond was either a fairy that was cursed or fell from grace, all fireflies become fairies in death, or my personal favorite Evangeline granted Ray’s final wish to be with her by making him a fairy shortly before his light went out.

That moment when I realized that Ray from The Princess and the Frog wasn’t just in love with some random star that he named. But Evangeline was actually his girlfriend and she somehow died. Then when she did, she became a star, just like Ray did at the end when he died. This makes total (tear jerking) dense because after all, what are stars? They’re fireflies, fireflies that got stuck up in that big blue-ish black thing.
