Darling, you are the reason I even started reading fanfiction for Bucky. Starting with the Lost and Found series, I fell in love. Yeah, I can be terrible at liking and reblogging, generally speaking, but it doesn't change the love I have for your writing. We all need breaks and I totally understand that. I'm sure the people who truly love your writing will be here when you come back. We all support your decisions, whatever they may be. :)

Oh gosh, love, thank you. I always notice your name when it pops up <3 Thank you for the support.

But sometimes, something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the soul can’t rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, the crow can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right. -The Crow, 1994

Brooklyn. 1946.

The cemetery was a snow globe. Someone had wrapped it in their hands, blocking out all traces of sunlight behind the deep grey clouds, and shaken it. Snow swirled through the air, between the slender claws of the dead trees, and dragged across the faces of black, slick stones. The wind hissed in your ear, stung the exposed flesh between your hat and the collar of your jacket. Kissed the places that had not been touched by warm hands in nearly a year.

There was nothing special about the dull, grey rock in front of you. There was a name, etched into its face, that had been filled with snow which only served to make the letters stand out more. It was a formality more than anything, the headstone. There was no body to be buried, no casket to lower into the ground.

The snow was falling heavily, leaving the world blanketed in white despite the fact that it was late and the sun had long since gone down. The street cut through it like a snake, weaving between trees for miles. The windshield wipers were turned as high as they would go, squeaking loudly against the glass as they swept back and forth.

Inside the car, the heater was turned up high and the radio played Christmas music. Bucky’s thumbs drummed on the steering wheel to the beat, his anxiety getting the best of him. He glanced at his reflection in the rearview mirror for the hundredth time, taking in the bright blueness of his eyes and the laugh lines beginning to prick at the corners.

“What are you so nervous for?”

You stayed in bed the next morning for as long as you could. The house was cold, and being wrapped in blankets that smelled like Steve was the only warmth you could find. You missed having him next to you all night, even if you were used to waking up alone. His body heat would linger in the sheets until he got home, allowing you just a bit of extra comfort on days like this. The sheets today were cold, and try as you might to seek warmth in the confines of your comforter, it wasn’t enough.

Dragging yourself up, you kept the comforter wrapped around you as you wobbled to the closet, yanking on a pair of fuzzy socks, patterned with penguins, and one of Steve’s thick, wool-knit sweaters.

Bucky paced back and forth, the wooden floors creaking under his weight. He resolved himself of his fidgeting hands by swiping up a bottle of Heineken from the mini-fridge in the corner, barely noticing as Steve slid through door and closed it carefully behind him.

“Hey,” Steve breathed, brows furrowed. Bucky’s jacket was still unbuttoned, tie around his neck undone and hair disheveled from running his hand through it too many times. “You doin’ okay?”

“I can’t stand still,” Bucky admitted, staring at his reflection in the full length mirror. “Can you help me with this thing?” He gestured lazily to his tie and Steve chuckled, moving toward him to help. He took the beer from Bucky’s hands, setting it to the side as he grabbed either end of the tie, carefully knotting it as Bucky buttoned up his jacket.

He hadn’t wanted to be, honestly, but duty had called- and by duty, he meant Fury- and he, Steve, Clint and Sam had been sent on a recon mission to retrieve some hostages on a boat in the Pacific. The com in his ear buzzed with Sam’s voice as he landed on the deck and told Clint it was safe to drop Bucky and Steve off, and seconds later the both of them were tumbling through the air and onto the deck beside Sam.

He had just round-house kicked an agent in the face when the com buzzed again, but this time it was the voice of someone who was on the other side of the sea. “Bucky, it’s time!” Wanda’s voice was loud and she was panting, and Bucky’s adrenaline spiked.

“I like Grant, for a boy.”

Bucky grinned, looking to his right as he pulled up to a red light. The car hummed, a gentle song playing from the radio. His eyes flickered from your face to the hand over your stomach. The swell was gentle, barely there, not nearly as big as the swelling of Bucky’s heart as he turned his attention back to the road as the light turned green.

“After Steve?” Bucky licked his lips and you shrugged.

“He’s your best friend,” you said. “He’s always been there for you, for us. He was your best man, and you really couldn’t ask for a better one.”

The entire house smelled of paint. Even with all the windows open and an industrial fan, courtesy of Tony Stark, it floated down the hall and into the kitchen as you watched the coffee pot fill, the two scents mixing in deep contrast. Humming to yourself, you poured a mug and left three others on the counter beside the pot as you followed the scent toward the second bedroom with a smile on your lips.

The paint was soft pink color, welcoming and distinctly feminine, contrasting with the soft yellow it was being painted over. At first, the idea of a pink nursery made you wrinkle your nose, but Bucky had insisted on the color with a pair of puppy dog eyes, and how could you say no? You had agreed, after a compromise that the pink would be paired with white to keep it from hurting your eyes too badly.

The windows were open, a gentle breeze flowing in and carrying the music of an old CD player through the house. The floors shined, freshly mopped, and you hummed along to the song as you wiped down each and every surface of the kitchen.

The screen door squeaked open and Bucky huffed, pushing through the open door with a heavy box in his hands. Steve was on his heels, carrying a box he could barely see around, and the two pairs of sneakers squeaked on the floor as they sat the boxes down among the others. Poking your head around the corner, you frowned at them both.

Inside the room was warm. The sheets wrapped comfortingly around your limbs and up over your shoulders, kept you safe from the cool morning air. Something under your head, not a pillow, pressed against your cheek and breathed.

Shifting lazily, one eye opened to look at the wall above you, blinking at the orange lines. You’d never woken up that way before- to the sight of the sunlight spilling over the wall over your head. That was because your windows faced just the right way, that the sun would spill, instead, onto the sheets at your feet. This morning was different. The windows were different, the color of the walls-

The body next to you shifted, your stomach dropping as both eyes opened and you shifted, pushing yourself off your stomach and into a twisted sort of sitting position, body aching.

“Something Worth Fighting For” Preparation Party and Follower Celebration

Hello all! I am so pleased to announce that I am this close to finally beginning the posting for the third installment of my Worth Fighting For series: “Something Worth Fighting For.” Additionally, I have crossed over the 3,000 follower mark!

To celebrate the return of the series and this follower milestone, I will be doing author commentaries on each chapter of the story so far. I will reblog each chapter twice per day with the commentary below it, and will be doing 5 chapters per day, with the exception of today where I will do the first four chapters. (Math says this means it will span an 8 day period) I will not be taking tags for these reblogs, but they will all be tagged as “WFF Commentary.”

Additionally, I will be taking drabble requests related to the series. This means if you would like to ask me a question or offer up a headcannon about the characters or events in the series, etc. I can answer them via drabble! Beware, if I for some reason do not take your request, it may be because your request was either too vague/specific, not related to the series, or the answer/headcannon might even come in the impending sequel!

Drabble requests will be open until the end of Sunday, May 21, central timezone (which is mine.) I’m planning to be done at the same time as the commentaries, which is May 25.

After all is said and done, I will be releasing the first chapter of Something Worth Fighting for on Friday May 26!

With love,
Kris

Anyone on my perm taglist has been tagged below the cut ;)

It was a quiet diner, just on the outskirts of Brooklyn. A soft melody filled the air, the sound buzzing alongside the quiet thrum of chattering voices and silverware. Bucky inhaled deeply, allowing the scent of pancakes and syrup to invade his nostrils. He smiled to himself as he watched you take a bite of said pancakes, your mouth too full as you hummed low to yourself, completely unaware of the incessant drumming of his heart.

“You’re so cute,” he laughed, catching your eye. Your cheeks flushed red and you swallowed, reaching for the glass of chocolate milk sitting between you as Bucky took a bite of his bacon strip. “I love how you look when you don’t know I’m watching.”
