If you were around last year, you know I celebrate April 22nd RELIGIOUSLY, so there will be an onslaught of 3x20 on my blog today😊. And if you’re new, the gist is that in honour of it being the anniversary of the day *angels singing* Olicity made love for the very first time and I ascended to shipper heaven (I’m writing this from there duh), I dedicate April 22nd to reblogging my favourite gifsets/art/reactions from THE GREATEST WEDNESDAY OF MY LIFE.
[Olicity sex is NSFW (by tragic CW standards😴) so if you want to blacklist: The Sexiversary]
y’all. this book just came out and it’s one of the best books I’ve read this past year.
A rising star in the weightless combat sport of zeroboxing, Carr “the Raptor” Luka dreams of winning the championship title. Recognizing his talent, the Zero Gravity Fighting Association assigns Risha, an
ambitious and beautiful Martian colonist, to be his brandhelm––a
personal marketing strategist. It isn’t long before she’s made Carr into
a popular celebrity and stolen his heart along the way.
As his fame grows, Carr becomes an inspirational hero on Earth, a
once-great planet that’s fallen into the shadow of its more prosperous
colonies. But when Carr discovers a far-reaching criminal scheme, he
becomes the keeper of a devastating secret. Not only will his choices
place everything he cares about in jeopardy, but they may also spill the
violence from the sports arena into the solar system.
the world of Zeroboxer is one of the most amazing and immersive scifi worlds I’ve encountered–because it feels like incredibly realistic. set on earth several hundred years years into the future, Mars has been colonized and people on Mars live in domes. Everyone on Mars has dark, radiation proof skin and are so physically and genetically different from people on Earth that they can’t compete against each other. Carr is a mixed-race brown-skinned kid from a Toronto so affected by climate change there are palm trees. Social media is broadcast through optic implants. People get hair dye that can change color at will. gene therapy can cure you of nearsightedness. you can eat different kinds of culturally Martian food.
yet despite this technologically advanced, multicultural future, the same problems we face today exist in different forms. racism, but against Martian folks; an ongoing political debate against how much gene therapy and body modification is too much. this isn’t a feel good ooh-la-la scifi universe where prejudices and political pettiness magically disappear. The realism of our society is that people tend to think that we’re all progressing towards a better future, that everything is progress, which isn’t true. In a lot of instances, shit can go backwards and can regress and people have to constantly keep pushing to have progress. in Zeroboxer, we can see our own future– despite all the tech enhancements and exciting new SPORTS IN SPACE!!!, we still have to keep fighting to move forward.
Please pick this up and give it a shot, and support the author so there’ll be a sequel! I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MARTIAN SPACE DANCING!
