I’m on the ‘I’m upset about Frozen getting a sequel’ boat. And I say that as someone who truly enjoys this movie, despite it’s flaws.
It’s just, there’s nothing in Frozen that prompts a sequel. Nothing. At all. It was clearly made as a standalone movie that should have only a short as some form of sequel, if it had any (like Tangled did).
Movies like Wreck-it Ralph and, especially, Big Hero 6, are much more deserving of a sequel. Both movies felt, in a way, like origin stories.
Wreck-It Ralph established the original characters’ stories and interactions, but maybe because of that, it didn’t use much of the already existing videogame characters. A sequel, with those characters we already know and love from the first movie interacting directly with other videogame worlds would be just perfect.
Big Hero 6 was a straight up origin story. It showed why Hiro and his friends became super-heroes, as well as the journey he went through to become this. Hell, that ending scene is pretty much the movie begging for a follow up: we end with every member of the group showcasing their abilities in the city, while a voice-over of Hiro explains how they became a super-hero team. It can’t get more origin story than this, folks!
And yet, it’s a sequel of Frozen that we get…
I’m upset because this really is Disney milking this cash cow to the last possible drop.
