A Road Sign That Reads ‘Pass With Care’ pt. 1

It’s your first big roadtrip and you’re skipping over
puddled asphalt like a smooth flat stone.
A low hill opens up into the shallow bowl of a valley
and a sign flies past the rainstreaked window,
Pass With Care.

There is a girl in the backseat
whose hands you will see shake one day.
There is a boy with his nose to the window,
counting raindrops,
who will forget how to sleep.
There are so many terrifying things in the world.

Pass through it with care, shields up and glassy,
hands bared. Is your heart a walled garden
or a hanging one?
