raccoon costume

Rocket Raccoon head finished :) This is my Halloween costume for this year! The rest of the costume is forthcoming, I’ll be sure and take pictures of the whole thing together.

I created this head from scratch from foam- nothing was outsourced or came frome a mold. I extensively studied both real raccoon anatomy and screengrabs of Rocket (and promptly found the real raccoon pictures weren’t that much help because Rocket’s proportions are subtly different). The teeth and nose are hand-sculpted from Super Sculpey, the lip and eyelids are two-part epoxy putty, and the eyes are hand-painted glass taxidermy blanks. I used five kinds of fur on the head and experimented with a few methods I’d not seen before, like feathering fur around the eyelids and simulating black skin peeking through the short fur of the muzzle. Rocket has horsehair whiskers and five real cat’s whiskers. I’ve been saving shed whiskers from my cat like a crazy person, gotta get more so I can replace the horsehair eventually. ;)

This costume head represents a significant investment of time, effort, and obsessive work and I’m honestly a little in awe of my own work if that doesn’t sound too vain! He’s not perfect of course, I can already see three things I’d change for next time if there is a next time… but that’s really just splitting hairs. Enough blab from me, enjoy the pictures and thank you to all for their critique, encouragement, and kudos during this build. ^_^

Happy Halloween!

Finally had a moment to do a proper photoshoot for my Rocket Raccoon costume! :) I already know I’ll be tweaking and editing this til kingdom come, but after working on it obsessively for a couple months, I’m ready to take a break and do other things during my off time.

Every part of this costume is made by hand, nothing was outsourced. Even the prison uniform I created from scratch with my own patterns. Rocket was a total labor of love, and what I would consider to be my first successful attempt at realism. I’m quite a ways off from wanting to offer realistic style as commissions, this project really was challenging! I had to step back from it several times and consult my reference pictures and ask for critiques to get me back on track.

Anyway, if you want to see closeups of the head, I posted them a while ago here: http://lobitaworks.tumblr.com/post/100441438456/rocket-raccoon-head-finished-this-is-my

I’ll be taking a few more pictures tomorrow, including closeups of the hands and feet, which are actually rather detailed.

This costume is not for sale, and I do not share or sell patterns. LobitaWorks is closed for large orders til 2015, but we are always happy to take on small orders (ears on a headband, tails, gloves, etc). Feel free to drop an email for a price quote on small orders: lobitaworks@gmail.com

A very quickly done picture stitched together using Gimp to show how yarn tails look depending on how you brush them out.
The first picture is brushed, then smoothed down tightly with my hands.
The second picture is brushed, then shook lightly for a natural look
The third picture is brushed, turned upside down and shaken violently to give a wild and fun look!

Bein’ a bounty hunter isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes ya get hurt. Sometimes you lose the mark and miss out on a good payday n’ hafta starve til the next big score. Sometimes the memories follow you no matter how far you go to try and get away. Some mornings are tougher than others. Good thing I ain’t the emotional type.

Highlights from Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con Costume Contest!

Judges Ann Foley, Hannah Kent and Judy Stephens had their work cut out for them as they had an amazing group of cosplayers and costumers enter. After much deliberation, Nebula was awarded Best Female, Starlord was Best Male, Rocket Raccoon with Baby Groot for Best Prop and Best in Show was Black Panther and Shuri. A huge thanks to all those who competed and were able to attend!

Boldly placed in front of an enchanting stack of styrofoam “stones” and a bare cyc washed in blue light, this Beast, appearing in a pair of medical scrub pants, a crushed velvet bellhop coat, a t-shirt generously provided by the actor himself, two baseball mitts adorned with fur and claws (….how is he expected to handle ANY props?), a plastic raccoon mask, an afro wig contained into a ponytail, and a set of literal Shrek ears, is a beacon of undeniable strength and valor.

The story follows Ravus Nox Fleuret, current King of Tenebrae, in the waking up of a special morning.

That’s it, I did it. Ravnis led me to this, I regret nothing.

Gladnis does, however, stays and will FOREVER stay my OTP. Sorry, Ravus.

I hope to break a brain or two, maybe.

Drown with me in the ship.

Ship it.

You know you want to.

Also! I was listening to these pieces in case you want to check out while reading. Idk if they fit the story’s mood, but have them in case you want some ambientation.
