do you have any fave books for beginner ba'al teshuvot? esp women?

Not much in the way of books specifically because books cost money, but chabad.org is a fantastic resource for people at all levels.

You may enjoy Teshuvah: A Guide for the Newly Observant Jew by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz (by the time I got to it I think I was a little far along in the process to properly appreciate it, but he has good things to say).

Voicing doubts is not only legitimate in the Talmud, it is essential to study. To a certain degree, the rule is that any type of query is permissible and even desirable; the more the merrier. No inquiry is regarded as unfair or incorrect as long as it pertains to the issue and can cast light on some aspect of it.
