“Is it…Richard Frederic?“ "No, and I am not going to–” “Russell Francis?” “No. You’re being–” “Rumpelstiltskin Finnegan?” Jackaby sighed. “Yes, Miss Rook. Rumpelstiltskin. You’ve found me out. I am the devious imp of the fairy tales.”
Why does nobody know about the Jackaby series by William Ritter????
For goodness sakes, its the most Tumblr thing I’ve ever read!!
It started out as a superwholock fanfiction, until the author realized he had an actual story on his hands and rewrote it into his own thing.
The main character is a woman, and the second main character is a detective of the supernatural. Who lives in a house bigger on the inside.
The woman, Abigail Rook, moved away from home because she wanted adventure and breaks the gender stereotype all the time. (Its based in Victorian new England)
Theres a ghost girl who was mudered living in Jackaby’s house. And also there’s a duck pond on the second floor, with a duck who used to be human but decided he would rather be a duck.
Abigail canonically bangs a werewolf. Possibly multiple times. (Its not described, only mentioned.) But she Definately has a crush on him.
The second book has a dragon.
The third book has a canon trans character. Ive only read the unedited version of the book (ill explain why in a minute) so I don’t know if this bit has been changed very much, but the character was very important to the story and didn’t die.
And theres a vampire with only one tooth.
Seriously, its an amazing series. And I’m not just saying that because I know the author. He happens to live in my town (and he teaches high school mythology at a local school). He signed my book and gave me a pre-readers copy of the third, which is not edited and very confidential ^^“ he’s an awesome dude tho!!
Not to mention, there’s a free ebook short story online called The Map, which takes place after the first book.
“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist.” Jackaby turned on the landing and faced me. “I am a man of reason and science. I believe what I can see or prove, and what I can see is often difficult for others to grasp. I have a gift that is, as far as I have found, unique to me. It allows me to see truth where others see the illusion—and there are many illusions, so many masks and facades. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”
i am so into the Jackaby series by William Ritter. thank you to whoever wrote the review that called it “a mix between Buffy and Sherlock” that made me immediately buy the full series hahaha. i may have waited over a year to actually finish it, but that’s fine since it allowed book four to come out in the meanwhile :)
