Criss-Cross Applesauce

I mistakenly thought that this would be a really quick, simple design.
It was not.
All the little lines took so long; by the end of it my roommate was questioning my sanity. On the bright side, it looks pretty cool!

Products Used:
Essie - Grow Stronger Base Coat
Essie - 016 Waltz
Sally Hansen - 360 Diamonds and Rubies
Sally Hansen - 370 Blackout
Seche Vite - Quick Dry Top Coat

  1. Start with a base coat. Once dry, attach striping tape as pictured. Make sure the tape is attached to the nail properly to ensure the clean lines.
  2. Work one nail at a time. Paint all nails with white nail polish. On the nails that had striping tape, carefully remove it with tweezers.
  3. Apply quick dry clear top coat *
  4. On plain white nails draw one-stroke flower petals with bright pink polish using a polish brush. Dry for 5 minutes.
  5. Take a medium size nail art brush, dip it in the nail polish remover and lightly go over flower petals to create the watercolour effect.
  6. With a dotting tool, make 3 small dots in the middle of every flower. Finish with quick dry clear top coat.

I friggin’ love robots, so I had to go for that, but which bots? There are so many great robots! I finally went with everyone’s favorite musicbots, Daft Punk! Each nail is inspired by a different helmet or outfit. Mostly based on this picture:

External image

Base color of all nails is Sinful Colors Black on Black over Revlon Gel Smooth basecoat. All nails except pinkies have Revlon Quick Dry top coat.

Thumbnails are the Random Access Memories helmets. Left is Maybelline Color Show Pedal to the Metal, right is Covergirl Outlast Glosstinis Seared Bronze.

Index fingers are the Tron Legacy helmets. Both nails have Sally Hansen Triple Shine Sparks Fly (which I promise is blue and silver in the right light).

Middle fingers are the Alive 2007 helmets. Both nails have a stripe of Maybelline Color Show Crushed Clementine done with a small paintbrush.

Ring fingers are the rainbow/Daft Punk helmets. Both nails have Nicole by OPI Be Awesome.

Pinkies represent their suits and leather coats, and just have NYC Matte me Crazy top coat.

These are the nails that I am wearing for New Year’s Eve tonight. I love how the circular holo glitters look kind of like the reflective pieces on the ball. But I also love how the rich, warm, jewel tones are so nice for the winter season.

After cleaning, filing, and applying a base coat:

1. apply one coat of bronze polish

2. apply a quick dry topcoat (since you are going to do a sponge ombre on top)

3. apply your favorite liquid latex (or just plain tape if you prefer) to protect your fingertip from the messy sponge ombre

4. do a simple, two color, sponge ombre with the same bronze and a rich, deep green

5. remove the liquid latex and clean any remaining mess

6. apply a quick dry top coat to smooth out the ombre

7. use a dotting tool or toothpick to apply the glitter pieces in any pattern that you like. Because I used glitters from this polish, I didn’t need to apply a clear polish to use as glue. If you are using loose glitters, you will need to apply a clear polish (not quick dry topcoat!) to act as a glue. Be prepared to spend a few minutes doing this - it is worth it in the end! Also, if you are using a glitter that is suspending in jelly (like the polish I used), I recommend putting the polish out onto a makeup sponge. That way, the sponge will absorb some of the jelly so that it is easier to get just a single piece of glitter.

8. seal everything in with another one or two coats of your quick dry top coat (I recommend two coats so the glitters are more firmly stuck to your nail and the surface of the nails feels smoother)

Please, please show me the nails that you are wearing today for New Year’s Eve on  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Cynosure and Serendipity, or Nails by Naomi and make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel for two new videos a week!
