This painting of Troop Sergeant Major James Champion VC hangs in the Warrant Officers and Sergeants mess of the Queen’s Royal Hussars (The Queen’s Own & Royal Irish)

Sergeant-Major Champion was a veteran of the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854. He also distinguished himself at Gwalior on 17th June 1858 when 4 men of the 8th Hussars won VCs. Champion won his award at Beejapore on the 8th September 1858, at the age of 24, when he carried on fighting even though he was severely wounded.
