Royal wedding gown traditions- wearing a train from the neck

Wearing a bridal train from the neck is traditionally a privilege reserved for the highest woman in the state. When Fabiola, Silvia, and Charlene all married their husbands, they became the highest ladies in the land which called for the grandeur of a stately wedding gown which included the high train. While Margrethe was only their heiress apparent at the time of her marriage, she still was allowed to wear her train in this way to signal her future role. When Sonja married Crown Prince Harald in 1968, she filled the role of Norways Queen almost immediately as her husbands mother died before she was ever consort, making Sonja the highest woman in the state, while the same applied to Princess Sofia of Spain (later Queen).

The photo was taken, possibly before Christmas.

This beautiful picture of the laurel necklace/tiara which was presented by Queen Sofia of Sweden to her grand-daughter-in-law, Princess Margaret of Connaught. The necklace/tiara was later bequeathed to Margaretha’s third son, Prince Bertil of Sweden, and worn by Bertil’s wife, Princess Lilian. It now belongs to Crown Princess Victoria.
