qajar series

Untitled (1998). From Qajar series. Shadi Ghadirian.

Shadi Ghadirians’ unique style was in contrast with the harsh and brutal images usually associated, at that time, with Iran. Using the language of art, her images defied not only the contradictions of Eastern societies, but also how the whole world saw this country. By mixing in an unprecedented way, through her artistic language, subjects of a social nature and taboos, she changed the course of contemporary photography in Iran.
