‘Hamilton’ Takes a Road Trip to the White House (NYT):

The show’s creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, joined by cast members Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom, Jr., Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo and others, was there to perform 15 selections from the score and to try out a new educational curriculum with a workshop and Q. and A. for students from around the area.

Some wanted to know how important diversity was in the casting of the show (very!). Others thanked Mr. Miranda for making United States history a fun topic.

Brody Brown, a student at Loudoun County High School, asked him what inspired his creative process.

“All of it,” Mr. Miranda said, name-checking the rappers Big Pun and Biggie Smalls, as well as crediting Shakespeare, the Bible, podcasts and the Beatles. “There are some people who only like musical theater,” he added. “There are some people who only like hip-hop. The rest of us just like whatever’s good.”

Having the cast there for the day was a full-circle moment for the Obamas and Mr. Miranda, who first performed at the White House in 2009 for the inaugural poetry jam. It was part of the administration’s efforts to expand cultural programming, and, for Mr. Miranda, it was something of a chance to workshop a song that would eventually go on to become the opening number for “Hamilton.”
