Glee 5x19: Mother's Day Musings

Early in this episode, Kurt describes the role he plays in his friend’s lives as that of a mother, just in place to praise others, but have no good things for herself. Later, when Sam wants to adopt the little dog, Mercedes says, “I’ve got my hands full taking care of you,” a sentence familiar to moms everywhere.

Those lines got me musing on mothers in Glee–and then further out to who takes on parental roles in the show, and mostly to the way Glee just models families formed from bonds of affection rather than blood.

It clearly is a theme of this episode, with echoes in all of the story lines. These are just some things I noted:

  • There is the story between Kurt and Maggie. He doesn’t ask her to be his friend, after all; instead he says, “Why don’t we become each other’s family?”
  • Kurt’s mom is present in her absence; I found myself picturing Kurt alone in the loft, watching Long Island Medium and wondering if he would dare try to talk to her, though he knows she can’t answer…
  • Peter Pan brings Wendy to Neverland to be the Lost Boys’ Mother, because they all need someone to tell them stories…and that’s what Peter thinks mothers do
  • Santana calls Kurt “Homocchio.” Pinocchio is a complicated tale of wrong starts and bad companions, but at heart, it is also the tale of an intentional family. Pinocchio wants to be a real boy because he wants his creator Gepetto to be his real dad.
  • Mercedes does probably feel like a den mother, coming home to the boys playing games, the chores not done…
  • But Sam correctly reminds us that he has been the breadwinner, he has been the one getting children off to school. He’s just taking some time for himself before he creates a family with Mercedes “someday”.
  • Finally, the story with the dogs is a story about animal “adoption.” People create families with their companion animals.

Love is Powerless. Some of the most beautiful love stories have been of couples of different age. Love is love. This couple has so many other, more serious and important, problems to resolve, but age won’t be one of them.

I read a comment on the Glee Facebook fan page...

Some woman was having a bitch saying that she could deal with the ‘homos’, but a teacher/ student relationship is just too boundary pushing and wrong so therefore she’s not going to watch Glee anymore even though she apparently a “massive gleek”

All I has to say is… Idina Menzel.
I’d go there too if she was my teacher ;)

I still find it hilarious

That if Quinn would had gotten together with Rachel and Puck would have stayed with Sheblie…that Beth would have had one hell of a family.

Her Father got her Mother Quinn pregnant, dated her Sister Rachel (or I guess just made out with her) and then got together with her adopted Mother. Her Mother dated her Father for awhile before going after her Sister Rachel as well. So Rachel is not only her sister but also her Mother in law.

So if her Mother and her adopted Sister had a baby…would it be a cousin or a sister?

Glee Stats Project

Method: Using VLC Player, I flipped through each episode of Glee in one-minute skips, and marked down whose face(s) appeared on the screen.  That’s the raw data shown above and used below.  Of course it doesn’t differentiate between important plotlines and background shots, so it’s only a rough approximation of the ‘truth'… but it is an objective measure, and one that was relatively(!) easy to obtain.

Defining terms: 'early,’ 'mid,’ and 'late’ parts of seasons = episodes 1 through 8, 9 through 13, and 14 through 22 (20 for s5), respectively.  'Primary’ characters have 7% or more of the total 'appearances on screen’ for a season or part of a season, 'secondary’ characters at least 3% but less than 7%, and 'tertiary’ characters at least 1% but less than 3%….  All breakpoints which I chose semi-arbitrarily, but because they seemed the best overall fit to describe the natural breakpoints/grouping of the data I had.

In the very briefest summary of results for the overall show, I present the characters in each grouping, in order:

Primary Characters = Rachel, Will, Kurt, Finn, and Blaine.
Secondary Characters = Santana, Artie, Tina, Mercedes, Sam, Brittany, Sue, Quinn, and Puck.
Tertiary Characters = Marley, Mike, Jake, Ryder, Emma, Kitty, Unique, and Beiste.

…. which is twenty-two characters 'counted,’ total.  Together, they make up all of the characters who appear for an average of more than once an episode in two seasons or more.

I Just, I Can't ..

If I read one more post telling me that if I don’t support the Puck/Shelby story-line on Glee than I shouldn’t Support the Ezria story-line on Pretty Little Liars i’m going to slap someone.

The two have nothing to do with each other.

As someone who both watches the Television Series and has Read all the PLL books I can tell you right now that I support Ezria more than any other couple in the whole series. Now despite the fact that there is a 5 or 6 year age difference between Ezra and Aria They understand each other, appreciate each other, and truly do love each other. Reading the books I described them as soul-mates in a way.

Puck and Shelby on the other hand, they have never shown interest in one another. Shelby is the adoptive mother of his Daughter. He once tried to sleep with Rachel (Shelby’s Biological Daughter) and he’s kind of a man-whore. It’s just not right, it has nothing to do with the obvious 20+ year age difference, I like forbidden relationship story-lines but I can’t accept this one because I don’t see any of the romance of it, I see Puckerman adding another conquest to his list.
