My thoughts to love yourself
Who am i kidding that teaser screamed INU and Run era stuff which was cool and everything BACK THEN but Wings literally blew our minds with creative energy from all members and we really began looking at them as individual artists with valid and worthy and proud melodies to sing along to- more than just a band.
BigHit do mass market research, I think it’s time to remind everyone that if you’re over 17 and a BTS fan you’re a minority when it comes to their mass fan base. My 12 year old cousin loves them, but obviously not for the same reasons that I do. In Korea being a fan of BTS isn’t something your 21 year old would say, so their not going to swerve to a minority market when the bulk of their fan base is probably between 12-17 and then anyone above counts as an older fan minority. Complex stories made me a fan of BTS in the first place, but in all honesty this teaser and project has reminded me of things that have been done and done again.
I didn’t expect BTS to do a copy of the Fault in Our stars or that Nicholas Sparks movie with the girl who has cancer. Jungkook reminded me of that.
I didn’t expect them to take inspiration from K-dramas.
I don’t know why they did this, unless BigHit felt they needed to give closure to one story before beginning or continuing another?
I feel as if this is one of those projects where BTS don’t have creative energy coming from them like they did for Wings, it’s BigHit catering to a Korean market audience that they have extensively done research for.
I mean, I think the teaser and project are cool and everything- but I’m just disappointed. One thing I really did like was showing them with girls. I think it’s healthy for some ARMY’S as well to see them with girls, it normalises their interactions with females which is so important.
I think it’s unhelpful as the world looks at BTS now. They made it live in Hollywood because they told individual stories and got named as Kpop’s social conscience. This teaser, for people who don’t know are going to think this is their new theme or something and literally all the cliche’s play in here, in a way that reduces the individual members into a kpop collective. I just hope this is closure to the INU and Run era.
The other option is that it’s going to show stages of a relationship, the beginning being the first glance, the middle being the good times and the end being the period of realisation that you need to love yourself. It makes sense. In order to realise that you should love yourself, there must firstly be a necessity to realise you have to because no one will love yourself quite like you do. I’m not putting my bets on it though because when the teaser images were released we all thought it was about something else much more intricate- when BigHit may have just made it into the most reductive story ever that’s been done SO many times?
Jungkook’s is already bloody problematic, he looks like he’s trying to run and is already type cast by focusing on his disability?
I need to cry.
