prosthetic body parts

anonymous asked:

I imagine Dva freaking out after meeting a literal cyborg ninja

Well D.Va’s actually seen her fair share of prosthetic body parts what with all the destruction the Omnics have wreaked on Korea and in the Omnic crisis in general. What stands out about Genji is mainly the extensiveness of his prostheses, and even then, lots of people just assume Genji’s just wearing high-tech skin-tight armor and happens to be very slight of build until they get a good look at his hands or ankles. I think she would have that brief moment of “holy shit, what happened” with meeting Genji and realizing just how much of him is cybernetic, but I don’t think it would be like in that instance with Winston where she’s like, “A cyborg ninja! Just like in my video games!” I like to think she might recognize his voice though.

D.Va: “Wait a sec—Did you ever use the gamertag MidoriSentai26?

Genji: That was a long time ago…

D.Va: Ha! I was kicking your ass in Fighters of the Storm when I was like…8!

Genji: …I know.

"Male Gaze” in art of cyborg women

Personally, I think transhumanism faces challenges not only in portrayals of cyborgs as being evil or corrupted, but also in portrayals of cyborg women (as well as many others).

I have noticed how prevalent nude or otherwise sexualized cyborg (and robot, which is closely related) women are in art (whether that be movies, shows, games, paintings, etc) made by men. I suspect the (possible) vulnerability of lacking certain (natural) body parts and the presence of artificial object body parts (prosthetics) is seen as a reason to sexualize or even objectify.

One may think nudity is just a way to show off more cyborg tech, but more often than not, modifications to the chest or pelvic regions of these women are visually minimal (maintaining the same general shape and appearance) or non-existent altogether. So, she might have some prosthetic limbs and maybe some wires running from her back or her head, but all else usually just conforms to the standard accepted sexual aesthetics. That is unlikely to be coincidence.

To be clear, it isn’t wrong to find these women attractive. And the opposite - portraying cyborg women as only undesirable and ugly - would not be good at all either. But when representations of cyborg women are dominated by male gaze, that reinforces the notion of transhumanism being a “boy’s club” where the male cyborgs are cool and the female cyborgs are objects of sexual desire (by men).

Transhumanism has an excellent opportunity to help deconstruct gender norms, gender roles, gender beauty standards - our very *bodies* - and a plethora of other related things, but we really don’t see that much, especially when it comes to cyborg women.

I hope that changes.

Hi! I was just wondering what you make of the scene in 'Gift of the night fury' where toothless breaks the new tail hiccup made for him? Could you analysize that please?

See also this analysis post about the tail breaking scene.

What is most important about this scene is that it demonstrates how much Toothless values Hiccup’s friendship and the time he spends with this friend. Earlier in Gift of the Night Fury, Toothless received a new tail which allowed him to fly on his own; he fully comprehended the freedom this new tail entailed, and he used it to fly off and locate Hiccup’s helmet. However, this scene shows that Toothless would rather not have a tail that allows him to fly on his own.

Hiccup wakes up the same manner he does every day: by Toothless pounding on the rooftop early in the morning. In a good mood, Hiccup steps outside, talking to Toothless… but cuts off in the middle of his sentence when he turns the corner and spies his dragon. This is the first view Hiccup gets of Toothless:

Toothless’ body language is clearly readable. Headplates are perked up. His back and neck are straight and poised. He’s on the tips of his feet. His eyes are extremely wide and attentively focused on Hiccup. At his feet is his saddle. Toothless is obviously indicating a desire to fly through the skies with Hiccup on his back.

Hiccup, however, does not understand all that Toothless means by this gesture. Hiccup understands that Toothless wants to fly with him, but the old saddle and tail rigging are now unnecessary. “Toothless, what’d you pull this out for?” Hiccup asks in an upbeat mood. “You don’t need this anymore. Come on, let’s get going.” At the same time, he pushes the old tail rigging aside and tries to mount on Toothless’ back.

As tiny as this detail is, I think it’s cool to note: Hiccup tries to push the old saddle away with his prosthetic leg. One of the elements Hiccup and Toothless share is a prosthetic body part: Toothless with his left tail fin, Hiccup with his lower left leg. Gift of the Night Fury demonstrates the limitations Hiccup has with his leg: though he can walk, it makes walking more hazardous because he will slip on patches of ice. Toothless has a similar limitation: he can fly, but he needs someone else to operate the tail fin. That is… until Hiccup creates the new tail.

Thus, Hiccup kicking away the old saddle and tail rigging is ironic… because Hiccup is using his own prosthetic limb to reject what has been Toothless’ prosthetic since they met. He’s kicking away what’s made them, in a way, more “balanced” and “equal”.

It is to note Hiccup still wishes to continue the morning routines he has established with Toothless, flying together through the sea stacks. Hiccup has no intention of spending less time with Toothless, even if Toothless can now fly on his own. As Hiccup sees it, they can still fly together and have good bonding times regardless of Toothless’ new mobility. But Toothless does not let Hiccup mount on his back… because to Toothless… riding without the old rigging is a compromise of their quality time spent together.

Hiccup gets perplexed and frowns at Toothless. He and the dragon circle around, Toothless stepping just far enough away to prevent Hiccup from climbing on his back. Toothless continues to rotate around the saddle, indicating he wants to use that, instead. “Will you quit fooling around? You have your new tail now,” Hiccup says. He frowns, squints, and peers at his dragon. “Toothless?” At this point, Hiccup is starting to understand soooomewhere in the back of his mind. He’s starting to comprehend what his dragon wants… that his dragon wants to fly the old way, the one which first brought them together as dragon and rider. But it’s not soaked all the way in, and Toothless needs to do something else to gain Hiccup’s full comprehension.

It is at this point that Toothless looks down at the saddle, turns to look at his tail, and pauses. It is as though the dragon is comprehending the powerful meaningfulness of Hiccup’s gift. He understands that he can fly, just as before they met, through the skies unrestricted. There’s going to be deep emotion and nostalgia in that. But then Toothless makes very clear body language that this tail is nothing compared to his time with Hiccup. He doesn’t look at the tail, he stares straight at Hiccup, and at the same time unashamedly begins to bash the tail behind him.

You can tell Hiccup still doesn’t fully understand because his first instinct is to hold his hands forward, crouch down, and exclaim in shock, “Toothless! What are you doing?” Toothless gives a little moan in response and pulls the saddle in front of him with his teeth. He gives the biggest, widest, cutest, most begging eyes he possibly can.

And then you see Hiccup’s face. His own eyes wide with full understanding.

Toothless does not want to fly without Hiccup. Although this is how Toothless has flown the first two decades of his life, he doesn’t want to fly unrestricted anymore. To Toothless, flight itself has become an intimate moment shared between his dragon rider and him. Though a dragon is naturally unrestricted in flight, now Toothless cannot enjoy a life in which he doesn’t have someone on his back. He doesn’t want to fly with Hiccup when he has the new tail. He only wants to fly when it is a team effort - when the two of them together navigate through the skies.

And this is so, so, so powerful. Toothless is willing to live without an experience uninjured dragons have… because he has come to associate flying with his best friend. Hiccup is so valuable that even a basic life function of dragons - flying - is something he has to do with his best friend. That’s powerful. That’s REALLY deep friendship.

And that’s why this moment is so meaningful between Hiccup and Toothless.

Archaeologists explored a tomb near Thebes, Greece in 2005 and discovered an artificial big toe attached to the foot of a mummy. The fake body part could prove to be the earliest working prosthetic body part to date.

In reference to the Joker survives ask, can we have him and his poor saviour going Christmas shopping and his saviour buying him prosthetic arms as a present? -Anonymous

Joker stuck beside his housemate. When he asked just what they were going to buy, he was simply told to ‘wait’, continuing to let them tug him forward by his shirt. When his saviour asked if he wanted to go inside the store with them when they got there, he pouted.“You’ve been keeping a bunch of secrets lately, of course I want to go inside!”

They grinned, saying that he would ruin the surprise, but they needed him to go with them anyway. His curiosity was almost killing him, so when they told him they had finally reached the store, he rushed inside without hesitating. He froze at the entrance, observing the store.

“This is what you’ve been saving up for?” he asked in a breathless tone, his companion nodding in response. The store was filled from back to front with all sorts of prosthetic body parts. “No, no, no. Thank you, it means a lot to me that you’d be willing to do this for me, but it’s too expensive. I can’t accept it.”

They frowned, sighing “At least try some on, so we know what to choose when we have money.“ They told him. He looked uncertain, keeping his eyes on you for some time before browsing in the store.

“This one. I like this one,” he said, though the uncomfortable expression on his face said otherwise. They walked up to Joker and checked the price tag. Coincidentally enough, it was the cheapest model in the store. After getting a huge scolding, Joker simply decided to try on all of the models and honestly tell them his opinion. The most expensive brands looked too showy and felt too weird, but the cheapest fit badly and hurt. In the end, the best fit was at the slightly more expensive end, but he told them how much he liked it.

He went to another store to by his friend a gift of their own. After a bit of searching he left the crafts store, excited to purchase a little mistletoe trinket when he saw his friend exiting the store, a smile on their face. He stopped in his tracks, eyeing the bag in their hands. He looked at them in disbelief.

“Now that I already bought them, it would be a shame to return them, wouldn’t it?” He stumbled over to them, tears pricking at his eyes. He collapsed against their body, crying into their shoulder. He’d finally be able to pick them up, hold their hand, hug them, and help them with the shopping bags.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you so, so much. Merry Christmas,” he sobbed, feeling just as grateful as he felt when they saved him. “Merry Christmas,” he repeated through sniffles, grinning and wondering how on earth he would ever be able to thank his angel.

Without makeup, my face is just a random pile of tissue, protein, skin cells, and cartilage. The random arrangement of that tissue, protein, and cartilage tells you nothing about my personality because I was simply born with it. Conversely, my makeup is not random at all. *I* chose it. ME. Not nature. Not my gene pool. Not strands of DNA over which I exercise NO CONTROL. Me and my personality chose this routine. And for that reason, makeup is the absolute closest I will get to self-expression on my face without prosthetic body parts. When a guy tells you he prefers you without makeup, he’s sort of telling you that he prefers it when you don’t make choices to advance your identity. He’s telling you that he prefers your body to your brain. Your brain is the reason why you applied that black eyeshadow. Your actual face and body are idle vessels through which you operate, but actually have absolutely NOTHING to do with who you are. So every time you make a decision to clothe your body or put makeup on your face, you’re making the decision to reflect your thoughts through the canvas that is your physical being.
—  Bebe Zeva

I handed in my project for my fine arts course at uni today.

For the past 12 weeks I have been researching and reading about the pros and cons of prosthetic limbs and organs, and how the ethical and economical issues that revolve around them have a plausible possibility to effect the future.

My biggest point that I made throughout my project is that the idea of prosthesis can be viewed as a double-edged sword - while prosthetic body parts can greatly enhance human capabilities and also return movement and functions to the host body (be it as a result of illness or injury) there are also less positive ideas that spawn from the technological advancements of these artificial body parts. What if there were to be a prosthetic hand that could write faster, or throw harder than the natural human hand allows us? Would people start amputating their own perfectly healthy hands to replace it with a prosthetic hand? If that were to start occuring then the idea of what it is like to be a human being would begin to lose it’s place in society and we’d be walking around with an increasing amount of people that are kitted out with shiny augmented body parts and look like “chromed up street samurai” , and a decreasing amount of human beings.

It’s a little bit difficult to read the notes on the acrylic sheets, but in a simple way they summarise the points I wanted to make about prosthetics be they both good and bad.

Mass Answering

Question 1: Character Death

Anonymous asked you:

I’m sorry, I’m on mobile so I’ve got to ask here. Do you have anything for how to make my audience like a character and be sad when I kill them off later?

You can check tags on mobile if you use a web browser to view my blog instead of the tumblr app. Go through the death, emotions, and likable characters tags.

Question 2Average Characters

Anonymous asked you:

How many characters does an average novel have?

Impossible to say and even if someone could calculate the average characters, it would be irrelevant and unhelpful to writers. The amount of characters needed is relative to stories on an individual basis.

Question 3Fantasy Stories

Anonymous asked you:

Hello! :) I was wondering if you had any links to good fantasy stories? I can only seem to find retelling of fairy tales on the internet.

Free ones? You can look through kindle books on Amazon for some free ebooks. You can download a desktop version of kindle to read them. Otherwise, you can look through various lists on goodreads for books.

Question 4: Romani in Medieval Times

Anonymous asked you:

Do you have anything on gypsies of medieval times?

“Gypsy” is a slur. Use correct terminology when researching and you’ll be able to find a lot more. I don’t have any information on that topic, but you can look through my research tag on the tags page for more research tips.

Question 5: Myths

Anonymous asked you:

How do you justify including only certain myths in your story? For example, vampires and angels exist but fairies don’t?

You don’t need to justify it. These creatures do not have to co-exist. If you want to, you can give the reasons behind the existence of certain myths, such as a virus being the cause of vampirism. This way, characters can claim that other creatures do not exist because they’re not plausible within your universe.

Question 6: Prosthetic

Anonymous asked you:

Hello, I searched the tags as well as FAQ for this, but I don’t think I was able to see anything about writing people with Prosthetic Body Parts? Any info for this would be appreciated, and thank you for having the patience to read over this.
