  • Top 250: No. 185

RT: 92% (126/11, 7.7)

Global Gross: $292.8 million

July 4-6 Weekend Gross: $8.9 million

HTTYD 2 has now been released in almost all major markets. It’s still got the UK on July 10, Germany & South Korea on July 24, Spain on August 1, and Italy on August 16. It was released in all Scandinavian nations this past weekend. In other words, there aren’t many more opportunities for it to make a big weekend splash. I’m just hoping for +$500 million at this point. As a reminder, the original made $494.9 million

The Seventh Seal: This film will definately not be for everyone’s tastes, a classic and a unique take on a meeting with death. It is both a visceral and cerebral peice that follows a night who meets death after returning from the cruisades and convinces him to play a game of chess; while death agrees the knight looks for a purposful deed that must be filled as to give his life meaning. We journey with a knight who knows he is doomed but will valiantly fight for something even if he is not sure for what yet.

__________________________

If it wasn’t official two days ago, it’s official now: HTTYD 2 has soared past $600 million worldwide! Whereas the first one had an international/domestic ratio of 56%-44%, the sequel currently has a ratio of 71.1-28.9. Conclusion: Stoick’s death hasn’t mortified international audiences like it has Amurrikan audiences. What can I say? This country lacks toughness. /:

American Beauty: This is one of those films that I did not appreciate or fully comprehend the first time I viewed it as a child, only being 9 when it was released. But viewing it again since then and viewing it even a third time for this challange I feel as though with each viewing the meaning of this film changes as it is loose enough in its story that the interpretation feeds off of the viewer. I recomend this film for anyone contemplating modern life in all its faccets.

  • Top 250: No. 192

RT: 92% (144/12, 7.8)

Global Gross: $598.9 million

August 29-September 1 Weekend Gross: $1.7 million

_________________________

It reopened in about 700 extra theaters nationwide for the Holiday weekend, hence the increase. Summer movies do that every year. Also, it’s not “technically” at $600 million yet, but who cares. We can be thankful that it continues to rebound impressively!

Words of advice: Don’t take the IMDB Top 250 list seriously. That list is flawed in so many ways and shouldn’t be used a projection of what movies you have to see. There are movies on there that made it on that list solely on fan base, so don’t take it personal if a movie you thought should have been on there is not on there.

Just watch the movies you want and enjoy the whole idea of watching movies whether other people liked them or not.

Tracing My Life in IMDB’s Top 250: 115

The Elephant Man: This film is a great embodiment of the phrase don’t judge a book by its cover. A man, Merrik, stricken with elephantitis disfiguring his face and body to the point that he is a carnival attraction. Yet when a doctor intreagued more than disgusted by the disease is given time with him he is able to discover the man behind this disfiguration, who can be sophisticated and caring like anyone else.

September 12-14 Weekend Gross: $372,012

Not surprisingly since it’s been out for three whole months now, it’s starting to wind down at the theaters. These last two weekends each grossed less than $1,000 per theater, the only two weekends it’s failed to do so.

___________________________

As you all know because you read it on the Grapevine, the movie has soared past the half-billion mark. It’s $44 million weekend surge was no doubt helped by its opening in Italy, the final country where its scheduled to be released. I’m hoping for a +$600 million finish. $700 million is out of the question.
