This small town hosts a pride celebration in a sea of red
Small town, big pride.

A touching, powerful article about the courage of LGBTQ folks living in the small, resistant town of Spencer, Indiana.

Though their Pride event may lack large corporate sponsors (or even the support of prominent local businesses), their steely resolve (very) slowly builds toward a community of acceptance. The Pride event G-rated, cheerful, and fun, with a wholesomeness impossible to object to.

“There is no silver bullet in the fight for equality. The incremental and unrelenting work it takes to organize and sustain a cohesive community is hard, but that work is certainly the best hope we have for building bridges to the sort of common understanding that defeats hate and intolerance.“

More harutaka headcanons (ノ゚∀゚)ノ⌒・*:.。. .。.:*・゜゚・*☆

• Takane really and truly hates texting with Haruka because aside from taking ages to type an answer, he loves communicating through stickers and emojis. He barely even types anyway, he just sends her pictures of literally whatever he sees. She’d complain but despite it’s annoying and all she likes being notified where he is and that he’s doing well.

• They don’t like being on pictures. Mostly because neither of them ever had actual friends or even family to take pictures with so they make them slightly anxious, without mentioning their not-really-healthy respective self-steems. Takane’s the first one to become a little more confident about herself but she still doesn’t like taking selfies unless it’s with someone else; on the other hand, Haruka takes a liking to it, but there’s no way in hell he’s doing it if there isn’t a silly filter involved.

• Honestly they’re huge fans of Star Wars. I used to headcanon Shintaro and Haruka were fans and Takane just made fun of them for being nerds but then I thought about it and honestly she’d love it too. So harutaka + Shintaro always make marathons together, and sometimes Ayano’s along too but she’s always like “um why aren’t we watching the actual first movie instead?” “I swear to God Ayano if you make me explain this one more time You Will Leave” (but they never actually kick her out)

• Yes I will keep talking about movies; okay I know it’s such a cliché date spot but gosh, they love the cinema. It’s a dark, quiet room + movies, it’s their favorite place to hang out. They even watch the bad movies when there’s nothing interesting to see; they’re most excited when Marvel or DC movies are in theathers. Takane doesn’t really care about the animated movies but she always goes with Haruka because he’s desperate to watch them.

I can understand why people say Haruka’s a dog person and Takane’s a cat person, and I don’t disagree! I just think Haruka doesn’t really prefer either as he loves cats and dogs the same and he just craves having a pet, he doesn’t care what kind, he just really loves animals. Meanwhile, Takane is a cat person, and actually dislikes dogs. She thinks they’re cute and all but please keep them away, they’re too big and loud and they jump on her and she’s way too small to take it in. She’s pretty much intimidated by them and only Haruka knows it, but only because he noticed (since there’s no way she’d tell anyone about it.)

• Despite it’s a known fact that Takane doesn’t like people, she’s not bad in social situations. She tends to act overconfident as a way to cope with her awkwardness in a situation she’s uncomfortable in (such as one that involves a lot of people) so in spite she doesn’t enjoy it, she is able to get through it. She doesn’t go out of her way to speak to people because she thinks it’s too mentally-taxing.
On the other hand, Haruka, even if he is more enthusiastic and cheerful than Takane, is actually held back by terrible social anxiety. He likes being around people and wants to interact, but it’s a lot harder to him. This makes Takane feel the need to protect him and save him from these interactions; she jumps in the picture as soon as she realizes Haruka’s having a hard time speaking. It results in her speaking over him a lot and sometimes forgets to let him have a turn.

• Because of the former headcanon, Takane does a lot of things for Haruka such as making his appointments or simply calling food delivery. Haruka hates interacting with cashiers because he feels like he takes too long to take his money out and things like that, so he usually has Takane to buy things for him and when he does it himself he’s incredibly proud.

• OKAY ON A HAPPIER NOTE Haruka likes painting his nails because it looks nice and he doesn’t really understand?? that’s a thing he’s “not supposed to do” so the looks from ugly mean people he sometimes receives don’t affect him at all. He always tries to convince Takane to let him paint hers so she gets rid of the habit of biting her nails but she refuses because she knows that if she ever painted her nails, everyone she knows would point it out and now that makes her anxious (and annoyed!!)

• It’s not the first time I’ve talked about this but I don’t care; Haruka likes cartoons. I literally mentioned this earlier, but now I’m talking about cartoons that have fandoms and such. Takane doesn’t get it and she thinks the fandoms are pretty creepy, but hey bonus Shintaro!! He likes a few of the same cartoons and they just watch new episodes together.

I’m talking post-str btw and yes I am aware that most of them aren’t shippy at all but I don’t care, fight me. I just love them and I will talk about them not making out. I also enjoy very much to talk about them making out but that is not the point. Ok bye

The last words your dying mother whispered in your ear did not make much sense, but you’re aware that the reason for your perennial heartbeats and ageless skin is found in them. Born in the dark, cloudy 1600s, all you can remember is running — from ghosts and people and even the darkness, which finally claimed the life of your family and left you with a heart that is too big and empty, too alive.

You have wandered on your own ever since, pathless and future uncertain, always asking yourself if your end will ever come. But you get up no matter how many times you fall, even when you beg your legs to stay on the ground.

Even so, the passing years are not all that hazy. Through the fear of losing your humanity and the ever so evolving mortals, there are seven fixed points in your life that you can always look back on with glossy eyes and a buoyant smile, all so different but connected through the love you have given them unconditionally.

They are the seven times you fell in love, and those seven times you never forgot.

I think it affects me because of my own struggles as a teenager. I don’t know if I would have used a hotline at that time, so I know what it feels like to be stranded, to not be able to pick up the phone and not trust that that’s gonna help and to not trust there will be somebody trustworthy on the other line that understands. I think it just reminds me. Just a constant reminder of what that was like. If it is about growing up in a town or in a family that is intolerant of one’s inner self, whether it’s a parent or friends or the neighborhood, I mean, it’s like, that is supposed to be your safety. That is supposed to be where you learn who you are and learn what you stand for and learn that everything is okay so that you can find that place and then go out into the world. And if it’s a bad place, there is no safety and there is judgment and there is fear, and the potentiality for a very difficult and shaky and confused and lonely life is there. So nipping it in the bud really early is a real good thing.
