The Yellow Power Ranger

Ok so, I’ve seen a lot about this and I wanted to give my thoughts on the scene.

This scene kind of got blown up by the media and I got sucked into it before seeing the movie but having finally seen the movie…

The scene goes as follows:

Power rangers are each spilling personal details about themselves and Trini is being quiet until she says that she prefers moving a lot cause it prevents her parents from getting involved in her relationships.

Zack jokes “boyfriend problems?”

Trini responds “yeah…BOYFRIEND problems…”

Zack looks around wide eyed before asking “girlfriend problems?”

And she diverts the conversation about how perfect her family is, too perfect, and how she can’t tell them she’s not like them. That she doesn’t want to act how they want her to, or dress how they want her to.

Ok, so there’s no moment of her saying she’s queer, but as someone who has spent their life not talking, this scene was very spot on.

It was honest and very well performed. It’s easy to look over if you’re not queer, or if you are naturally an open person who had no problem admitting who you are to yourself, let alone everyone else, but this scene was very relatable. She’s a teenager who knows she’s not like the girly straight girl her parents want her to be, and she knows her parents won’t listen to her no matter what she says. There’s even a scene where she tells her parents she’s a power ranger and her mother makes her take a drug test. She guards herself by holding back info and speaking through sarcasm and its sold as humor but I don’t think I’ve related with a character more.

So, if you’re expecting a flying rainbow flag or even some wlw action, you’re going to be disappointed. But representation matters in all its forms and this is pretty darn relatable. Not to mention the movie was just fantastic. It defies stereotypes with the exception of the white dude who’s just so tired of being popular… I love the backstory it gave, stuff the series ignored and it was so fleshed out. I recommend everyone watch it

There’s a huge difference between Captain America: The Winter SoldierThor: RagnarokSpider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 emulating aesthetics from the 70’s-90’s vs Zack Snyder attempting to straight up adapt stories from the 80’s-90’s verbatim and then failing at it too.

An emotional convo between trini and zack
  • Trini: soooooo...whats up?
  • Zack: uh nothin much just in love with billy. is there something on your mind?
  • Trini: i dont even know kim has been acting weird lately i think she doesnt like me anymore

  • Zack: oh trini come here *gestures for a hug*
  • Trini: *hugs zack* *sniffles
  • Zack: kim has talked to me so many times droning on and on about how much she likes you dont let your insecurities blind you from whats right in front of you
  • Trini: *wipes eyes* really?
  • Zack: really.

The dcau superman is not the scout boy sunshine happy all day long type so why everyone insists superman MUST be that.

Neither was the Smallville version. Neither has the comics version been for a long time. I remain convinced that this characterization is only a problem because Zack Snyder is the one behind it. If it had been George Miller or JJ Abrams, no one would have anywhere near as big a problem.

“DC movies don’t need humor–lookit The Dark Knight!"

Bruh do you not know how many jokes (both visual and verbal) are in that fucking movie.

I’m not saying that DC movies should be straight up comedies (unless it’s like a Plastic Man movie or a straight up Batman ‘66 adaptation), but they need a good balance in their tones. The Dark Knight and Batman Begins had perfect tonal balances.

I think the problem with Zack Snyder as a director, is that he has a lot of respect for his audience, and so he holds us to a very high standard. He expects people to soak up all the details and subtleties in his movies, because that’s what’s he would do, and it’s what he knows fans of his work will do.
Unfortunately, this approach alienates the audience that don’t do this. That’s not to say that people that don’t like his movies or can’t follow the plots are stupid, or lesser than fans of his movies, it just suggests to me that they don’t go to movies to have to focus. Some people use the escapism of movies to switch off their brains and have the movie do all the work for them, which is fine. But then others find escapism more immersive if they totally lose themselves in the story, staring at all the scenery, reading all the details littered around and watching all the body language. There is so much of the story in Zack Snyder’s work that is left in the subtext. Like a true artist and storyteller, Zack knows that what you leave out can be just as important as what you put in.
Zack expects his audience to be absorbed into the world of the movie, not just look at a screen and hear the noises. Some movies are great for that, and hand you everything on a plate, ready for consumption. But Zack makes you hunt and gather, sometimes letting you prepare the feast for yourself. And the beauty of this approach, is that the whole story is there, but there’s a lot more open to the interpretation of the audience than you’d usually see in big budget action movies - especially superhero movies, where this basically never happens. There’s a very clear narrative, but it is what you make of it, and some viewers are happy to do the work, to make the absolute most of it, and I think that part of the audience doesn’t even put the effort into doing this; it’s simply how they watch movies.
And then others just simply see and hear and only think about what’s there and never what’s between the lines.
Maybe to be a more successful director, Zack should dumb it down a little. Focus on pleasing the crowd. But I don’t think he’ll ever do that, because he is an artist. He is uncompromising in his vision and he knows that there is enough of us out there that appreciate what he does, so he keeps on doing what he does best for himself and for us.
I hope he never gives in. I hope studio execs trust him enough to let him do his work the way it works best. He makes his stories as art. Rich, detailed, stylish, intelligent art. The general population might not be ready to see superhero movies that way, but my God I’m ready for it. I’m tired of two-dimensional, soft contrast, rainbow coloured movies. I want depth, shadow and a refined palette, and that’s exactly what he gives us.

Thank you, Zack. You are a true artist and storyteller. Thank you.

That one time that All Time Low were trying to close the show, Rian was M.I.A and so Alex covered for him and Jack tried to improvise….
