probably my most favorite scene in the whole series... it was perfect

(for @yoituuri and @starryfeathers. I accidentally deleted this whole thing once so hopefully it doesn’t happen again/ it’s not rushed. I hope you enjoy you two, and anybody else who reads this!)

I made a post about my favorite boy Victor not too long ago, and I mentioned a shot in passing that I really loved, but because it wasn’t the focus of the post, I didn’t go into it. I would like to now. Here it is:

This is the first glimpse of Victor we get within canon. Well, beyond the opening sequence with Yuuri watching Victor skate as they grow up but I think we can all agree that was outside of canon and can be discarded here.

Anyway.

It’s a damn good first glimpse. As you’ve probably already noticed, Victor’s eyes are covered. Deliberately. Dude fuckin does a twirl and the camera is framed in such a way that we don’t get to see his eyes until he looks up for the cameras. That’s an interesting touch, for several reasons.

First, when a character’s eyes are not visible, it implies something is hidden within them. A trait, motivation, true emotions, etc etc.

Secondly, the fact that we can’t see Victor’s eyes until he turns to the cameras with that fake-ass media smile. In this scene, we’re being treated as the public. Victor is immediately hiding from us and the rest of the world. You know, something he does all the goddamn time.

Victor is scarily good at masking. For those who don’t know what I mean, masking is the act of hiding one’s true personality, desires, and/or emotions to conform to society. I mask due to past trauma. Victor masks to meet public expectation.

You’ve probably guessed already that masking is incredibly unhealthy–it’s repression, after all. If it gets bad enough, you’ll stop knowing where masking ends and you begin. Sometimes it takes me months to figure out how I feel about something because I need to sort through so many layers of masking and anxiety and doubt. It’s really difficult sometimes.

We see tons of lovely examples of Victor masking throughout the show. Here are a few off the top of my head:

(^absolutely terrified vitya trying to be smooth)

(^living up to his press image)

(^so incredibly upset on so many levels but he doesn’t dare show it)

(^pissed enough that yuuri picks up on it. and then acts dishonestly w/ yuuri by trying to come off as pleasant)

(i love that yuuri is comfortable enough by this point to call victor out on his bs. if you’re gonna get mad, get mad)

(you can actually see Victor’s hand shake if you watch the scene. boy is so pissed and he’s holding it in)

etc etc.

Victor is actually incredibly reserved in all the emotions he shows, especially if it’s anger or sadness. For most of the series, he only lets himself go in front of Yuuri or alone. Victor hides from himself, he hides from Yuuri, and it helps no one in the end.

The beach sequence, actually, is important to this idea too. As we know, Victor asks Yuuri what he wants them to be.

And then he lists off all these options before essentially asking to go out with him, but in a way that says he’s too scared to do it outright.

Now, this is partially to gauge Yuuri’s feelings towards him, but it’s also highly revealing of Victor’s self-worth. He’s willing to put on any mask, any persona to be with Yuuri. Yuuri, of course, doesn’t want this at all.

🚨 HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP ALERT!🚨

And looking at Victor’s reaction (guarded surprise)

This may be the first time Victor has been asked to just be himself.

So if Victor was a world champion at 16

(boy is 15-16 in that article)

He must have been skating for a while beforehand. We can probably approximate by saying he started competitions around the time Yuri did, which I estimate to be about 12-13. However, Victor does say this

And if we’re to believe him, 27-20=7, and therefore something happened at the age of 7 to force Victor into backing away from others and working himself to the bone. Uhm, wow. I don’t know how accurate it is to say that, but regardless, he’s been in the public eye for a long fuckin time.

Victor has spent this long fuckin time building an image: elegance, confidence, charming yet untouchable. The perfect playboy, in a way. This is the person he presents to the public. I think he’s been masking like this for so long he forgot that this isn’t who he is–Victor has the ability to be all those things, but it’s not who he is. Victor is excitable, bubbly, caring, vulnerable, depressed, lonely, hardworking…Yuuri, by asking Victor to be himself, released a metaphorical floodgate on Victor’s emotions. He’s broken that carefully crafted persona.

Victor is now publicly goofy and affectionate

(i love how he hides his face a little here…how cute and shy while showing off that he’s yuuri’s)

And can drop his composure comfortably

(also vitya always wears gloves to competitions until they get the rings and then victor keeps the gloves off completely :v)

I love that Victor’s relationship with Yuuri has allowed him to find himself again, and peel away those masks to live and breathe and love as he was always meant to.

anonymous asked:

You are the first and only writer I have read for this fandom. I love your work so much, I've re read all your Arrow stories twice (even the Firefly one even though I've never watched it). Do you have any favorite Olicity fics to recommend to keep me from going crazy my first hiatus? (I binged the first 4 seasons last year)

This is awesome!! Thank you! I’m super honored. And do I have recs? Oh yes, I have recs.

First rec isn’t actually a fic, it’s a resource… @theolicitylibrary. If you want recs, they’ve got ‘em. If you want a specific trope or rating or genre, they’ve got that, too. Have a hankering for a fic where Oliver and Felicity are business rivals? There’s a link for that. Where she’s the vigilante instead? There’s a link for that, too. Where one of them is a werewolf? Yup. They’re an amazing resource and you can lose days (and weeks and months) going through lists of alpha/omega tropes and rockstar AUs and friends-to-lovers fics.

But more specifically… how about I rec some authors, too? I haven’t been reading much lately - I spend all my time writing - so I’m more comfortable reccing authors I know are amazing and whose works I’m looking forward to catching up on. They’re all consistently excellent. This is by no means an all inclusive list.

@dust2dust34 - My co-writer for FiCoN and personal fav (though I admit to no small amount of bias). If you want smut and you want details and mining a scene for feelings, Bre is your girl. She has plenty of oneshots to choose from as well as some multichapter fics.

@machawicket - Look, I can’t overstate Danielle’s skills as a writer. My husband doesn’t even read my fic but he likes hers. Her writing is funny, sweet, sexy and heartbreaking in turn but it’ll never leave you unsatisfied. She’s a master.

@anthfan - Nikki is one of those writers that’s so good she makes you forget you’re reading a story, because it’s just something you’re living. It’s an experience. Her characterization is spot-on and her plots are super engaging. She writes both one-shots and longer stories. They’re all worth your time.

@hannasus - Susannah’s writing is the perfect balance of detailed exposition and tight narrative that lets you feel like you’ve experienced the whole setting in just a few lines. Add to that fully in-character characterization and interesting plots that keep you reading and you really can’t go wrong. I recommend reading her Something Like Fate series ASAP as she’s adapted it into the basis for an original novel (which she’s publishing later this year) and it may not be up on AO3 a whole lot longer.

@rosietwiggs - I can always tell Rosie’s work in just a few lines. Her narrative voice is so very distinctive and so gripping that it pulls me in effortlessly. I don’t believe she’s writing for Arrow anymore, but even her unfinished works are worth a read. I especially recommend The New Normal, Lengths and How The Mighty Fall In Love.

@supersillyanddorky06 - I’d be surprised if you hadn’t heard around about Matty’s writing because she’s right at the core of the Olicity fandom’s best known fanfics. With good reason. She’s prolific, plotty, smutty and evocative. If you have a weakness for Bratva!Oliver, I’d start here.

@jsevick - I first met Jaimie after reading her Jurassic Park AU (really!) and being both delighted and amazed that she could make it work. I’m extremely lucky to have had her help as my beta pretty much ever since. If you like my writing, she’s a big part of it (along with @alizziebyanyothername). While she hasn’t posted in a while, her stories are just fun and if you like Gilmore Girls, her Arrow AU for Gilmore Girls is a treat!

@realityisoverrated-fic - I have no idea how you would feel about Smoaking Billionaires, Anon (I personally love it), but I’ve got to very highly recommend her Infinite Love series. At 110 parts and counting, it deals extensively with Oliver, Felicity and Tommy’s family longterm, including their kids. It’s alternately hot, sweet, and heartbreaking. But, most of all, it’s just well-written and interesting. If you’re willing to read them as a triad, I cannot recommend this strongly enough.

@geneeste - I would pay for more of Caught a Long Wind. Quite literally. But, that aside, Genie is a top notch writer. Whether her one-shots, WiPs or brilliant, ongoing epic co-written work with @machawicket, everything she writes should be devoured.

@juliesioux - Julie uses the setting in a story as another character. There’s so much life to the world she puts her characters in that it practically breathes. Above that, she doesn’t shy away from hard topics. She will rush in head-first and dig deep to explore what her characters are going through. When you read her work, take her warnings seriously, but if you’re looking for a rich story to read that challenges you, she’s the perfect option to turn to.

@thatmasquedgirl - One of the most prolific Olicity fic authors (with 110 fics, including the absolute opus Technical Assistance). She’s consistently excellent, creative and she gives us as a fandom a whole lot to read. You can probably spent a huge chunk of hiatus happily buried in her work.

@entersomethingcleverhere - As a rule, I do not read first person stories. Not even when they’re published books sitting on shelves at my bookstore. I will break that rule for her writing. I like it that much. It’s heartfelt, moving, well-paced, and the connections between her characters are both real and evolving as you go.

@arrow-through-my-writers-block - Shelby is… well, she’s just fun! She’s a solid writer who never disappoints. She’s got quite a few one-shots and a few ongoing multi-chapters. She’s probably best known for Starstruck, but all of her work is worth reading.

@wagamiller - I just really love wagamiller’s work. Like a lot. There are very few authors I have on alert, but wagamiller is. Stories that make me laugh out loud are few and far between, but the 35B series surely did (as did @machawicket‘s Unbearable Hotness of Being, btw). Strong, sharp, witty writing that will leave you with a grin on your face.

@callistawolf - When I think of Callie’s work, I think of the fanfic version of sitting down with some hot cocoa and curling up with a warm blanket to watch a Hallmark Christmas special. She’s consistently excellent about finishing her work, which is lovely, and you can pretty much always count on a feel-good romantic ending.

@hopedreamlovepray - Writing one-shots that stick with your reader is hard. Keeping a story to 1-2k and still being impactful is even harder. She absolutely manages it every time. Hope27 (as she’s known on AO3, so you can find her) has something like a hundred Olicity fics. These are, in my opinion, absolutely perfect if you want to lose yourself in a story on the train to work or during your lunch hour.

@dettiot - Mel has a lot of great stories (like really great). My favorite is probably the “ink in my pen ran dry” series, but that’s a really tough call. Core Curriculum is super hot. The Felicity Stark series (crossover with Avengers-verse) is brilliant and fun and made me giddy while reading it. Beauty in the Breakdown is excellent. Jerry the EA series features one of the best takes on a relative OC I’ve read in fics. Love is Red made me squeal like a teenager with excitement (I’m not ashamed; it was warranted). And Two Men, Same Name (written with @melsanfo) is one of those that I am absolutely dying for the time to catch up on. While I’m at it, let’s rec Mel Sanfo, too. Her Masquerade is another novel-length fic absolutely worth a read. You really can’t go wrong with either of these ladies.

@ash818 - Ash is freaking awesome. So, here’s the thing. Her Legacy series is mind-blowingly good. I have to admit, I’ve only read The Man Under The Hood in the series (this is intentional, for a reason you’ll see in a moment, but you need to read all of her work ASAP, okay? You do). This series… you’ve got future, married Olicity with teenage children as they continue their mission. There’s action, plot, heartbreak, angst, love, everything you could want. It’s in first person from their son’s perspective which is something I would probably never have clicked on in the first place had it not come highly recommended, but good lord is it amazing. All of her characters have life. All of them have depth. Her OCs are fully formed and vital to the story without overshadowing characters you already know. I haven’t read the later stories because after I decided to continue on with FiCoN verse, I didn’t want to inadvertently shade my views on Olicity’s growing family and continuing mission with anything she did in her series. If anything I do happens to run parallel to her work, I want to know beyond any doubt that it’s 100% coincidence. But her stories are something I’m absolutely itching to get to read… eventually. Her writing is excellent.

@tinaday3w - I’m tempted to say “JUST READ IT” but that’s probably not enough… But really, just read it. No one does slow burn like Tina. Victorian era AU with pirate!Oliver? Yes, please. Hello. I’ll take two.

@emmilynestill - She’s just so good. And sooooo hot. I don’t know if you know this, Anon, but writing a good sex scene is hard. You don’t want your reader pulled out of the scene by wondering if a position is actually possible or when underwear came off (or if it did) or how gravity isn’t making them collapse. Like… smut is difficult. But it reads so effortlessly with Emmilyne’s writing. And, beyond that, she weaves it in beautifully with plot that keeps you wondering what’s next and emotion that builds and grows in an organic way. Orgasms and organic feelings. Honestly, what else could anyone really want?

@ruwithmeguys - Jess will gut you and leave you asking her to do it again. Indecent Proposal… just… read the warnings and be ready and read it with a lot of time on your hands and probably in chunks because ouch. But still… read it.

@academyofshipping - Sarah has this dry sense of humor that comes out in her fics that’s as clever as it is fun. Fluffy, funny, smart, cute and rich with feeling, Sarah’s writing is consistently strong.

@someonesaidcake - Felice is fantastic for completed, multichapter AU fics. She has quite a few and I’m pretty sure every single one included smut at some point (if that’s your thing) as well as plot.

And… I’ve spent like an hour and a half on this which was a lovely diversion for my day. I know I’m forgetting amazing people but I have to stop here. When in doubt, take the title of a fic you like, google that name in quotes along with “rec list” and find someone’s list where that story was included, then explore the others. Or, check the bookmarks on AO3 of an author you like, that’s a great place to mine for fics, too. And, again, I can’t rec @theolicitylibrary enough. That said… happy reading, Anon! We’ll get through this hiatus together… through fic and sheer force of will. ;-)

Samurai Jack: The Case for Mature Western Animation

When critics talk about the must-see television events happening so far this year, shows like Better Call Saul, American Gods, and The Handmaiden’s Tale are often brought up. This is, of course, for good reason: each of those shows are well-crafted, hard-hitting, and intelligent stories told by visionary showrunners in wholly unique ways.

We need to start including Samurai Jack on that list.

Genndy Tartakovsky has always been a cinematic animator. His original run on Samurai Jack nearly two decades ago nearly revolutionized how children’s action cartoons could be portrayed, with his careful and brilliant use of silence and color. He would continue this artistry with his tragically-underrated science-fiction epic, Sym-Bionic Titan (hey, Toonami, how about asking for a second season of that show next, huh?).

When Samurai Jack returned this year, Tartakovsky knew that his audience was going to have grown with the character. He knew that [adult swim] would’ve allowed him to use as much profanity, gore, and sexual innuendos as your average Family Guy episode, and a lesser showrunner would’ve run with that opportunity. Instead, Tartakovsky opted to tell a more mature story in the literal sense of the word. This meant more reflection, more spiritual and emotional symbolism, more grounded stakes, and a more hardened Jack. Indeed, this is what makes a majority of the season so fascinating to watch.

During the original series on Cartoon Network, our hero was a calm, silent, confident warrior on a mission. Despite being a stranger in a strange land, he always kept his wits about him. Rarely did he lose. Watching the show as kids, we just knew that he was going to eventually make it back to the past to stop Aku.

In season five, we’re not so certain anymore. Jack is now more of a ronin, wandering the apocalyptic wasteland of Aku’s future looking for lives to save. It’s become so routine that he’s almost forgotten why he does it anymore. His mind is corrupted by vicious thoughts that constantly bombard him with self-doubt. He suffers from hallucinations of his family and loved ones suffering in the past without him. All the while, he’s being followed by the spirit of death, who is patiently waiting for Jack’s seemingly-inevitable suicide. Even with the introduction of comedic characters like Scaramouche, we’re shown immediately just how much darker this world had become.

That threat grows worse with the introduction of the Daughters of Aku, seven warriors bred specifically to kill Jack. In my opinion, the episodes surrounding their hunt and the subsequent battles were the highlight of the season, showcasing Tartakovsky’s storytelling nuances at their brightest. The action is as swift and dazzling as ever, and the use of dramatic lighting and suspenseful music is downright ingenious. Balancing the hard-hitting violence with the somber moments of fear and reflection make the battles between Jack and the Daughters some of the best directed scenes not simply in recent animated history, but in television history as a whole.

After a poignant childhood flashback of his father reluctantly slaying an army of foes, Jack comes to terms with the fact that he sometimes needs to shed human blood, despite having never done such a thing before. He slays six of the seven Daughters of Aku in a beautiful snow-covered forest (again showing us how much Tartakovsky and his team love playing with color), sparing only one of their lives. This is when we meet Ashi, who becomes the driving force of the entire season.

I was legitimately impressed with how the show handled Ashi’s transformation from brainwashed killing machine to Jack’s partner in good. Within the span of two incredibly-paced episodes, we saw her slowly peel away the layers of both who she and the “evil” samurai were. Contrasting the unforgiving violence of her upbringing to the gentleness of her former enemy causes her to question everything she knew, and interacting with Jack’s old friends from the original series solidified her stance on the matter: Jack, despite everything she knew, was a hero.

(Just an aside, seeing Ashi break lose and dance at the Rave with a big smile on her face was one of the happiest damn moments of the season for me)

A lot of people were unsure of how to interpret Ashi. I know a lot of people felt she was very sexualized throughout the series, and I felt there was a definitive lack of understanding when it came time for the character to “wash herself clean” of Aku’s influence (does it matter if she was technically naked the whole time? Can’t we just accept physical metaphors and move on?). Some didn’t like that she had to save Jack on multiple occasions, while some didn’t like the fact that she, herself, had to be saved on multiple occasions. I feel as if those people were simply looking for something to complain about, because I legitimately found Ashi to be a great character.

The episode in which she needed to take down an entire army sent to kill Jack while he was meditating his anger away and acquiring his sword is an all-timer, and probably the most Tartakovsky-esque of the season. The action sequences are as brutal as they had ever been, with bright Tarantino-styled blood spilling over the battlefield; Meanwhile, Jack’s spiritual quest for inner-peace is filled with as much stillness and restraint as the creative staff could muster. Truly the last perfect episode of the season.

I felt as if every idea and story beat Tartakovsky had planned ended up in the season in some capacity, though I felt that the pacing was forced to grow a bit rushed as the season wrapped up. The best – and most unfortunate – example of this is the finale itself.

It’s exactly how we all secretly wanted the show to end: Jack is seemingly defeated, and Aku can’t help but gloat to everyone on the planet. Right as a possessed Ashi is about to deliver the fatal blow, all of Jack’s allies rally together for a full assault on Aku’s castle (what else could’ve possibly connected all of these strange characters than the capture of their legendary savior?). Jack breaks free and assists Ashi in overcoming Aku’s demonic grasp. Upon learning that she possesses all of Aku’s abilities, she’s the one who opens up a new portal in time, allowing Jack to go back to the past and finally defeat Aku.

(In what was easily my favorite part of the finale, Jack and Ashi appear almost immediately after his original self was sent back, leaving Aku flustered, baffled, ill-prepared, and horrified. “You’re back already?!” he spits out. Jack conquers his foe easily, and while some found the final battle anti-climactic, I felt it was perfect.)

Afterwards, Jack finally returns home, Ashi by his side. A wedding is arranged immediately, and they’re ready to spend the rest of their lives together. In a dark twist that those of us familiar with time travel almost saw coming, however, Ashi disappears from existence in Jack’s arms, having never been born due to Aku never taking over the future. Jack, bitterly alone, retreats to the forest, where a ladybug (a beautiful callback to Ashi’s character arc) allows him to see the promise of what’s to come.

It all sounds so perfect. Unfortunately, everything emotional that happened in this episode had to be squeezed into the last ten minutes. This maybe could’ve worked if Tartakovsky hadn’t perfectly spaced out Jack’s inner turmoil at the beginning of the season. After such perfect reflection, I wanted to see more emotion from these last few moments. There was a lot Jack needed to react to, from all of his friends coming together to fight Aku, to Ashi finally defeating and channeling the darkness within her, to the unadulterated and enormous impact of finally returning to the past! Jack had spent over fifty years trying to get there, and we didn’t even get to see an emotional reunion with his family. That just didn’t feel right to me.

Then there’s Ashi’s disappearance. She didn’t die, she was erased from existence. After struggling with his inner demons throughout the first half of the season, I wanted to see Jack mentally and emotionally try and cope with that. After all, it wasn’t simply Ashi who vanished; it was all of his friends and allies whose lives he had touched throughout his decades in the future. All of them were gone, a curse that inevitable if Jack were to complete his mission. There is pain, horror, and guilt bursting at the seams with such an ending. We could’ve had an entire half hour dedicated to Jack accepting what he had done. It’s such a bitter, dark, and beautiful ending emotionally, and I felt the writing staff wasn’t given the time to appropriately explore it.

Still, all of the ideas were there, and Genndy ended the show on his own terms creatively. He still provided us with nine-and-a-half perfect episodes that broke the boundaries of what Western animation was capable of. It practiced restraint and patience when other action cartoons insist on doing the complete opposite. It gave us a hero plagued with inner-darkness and mental illness on a journey of self-purpose. It gave us a character with a redemption arc we never saw coming and rooted for until her tragic end. And – for me, anyway – it gave me hope for animation as a medium, that more audiences will look at this sweeping epic of a story and think “I want more.”

SnK Chapter 93 Poll Results

The chapter 93 poll closed with 1,143 entries. Can I start with a wow? With so many responses, this is going to be a long one.

RATE THE CHAPTER
(1024 responses)

The Marley Files continue to grow on us. 77% of respondents rated Chapter 93 very highly.

Best chapter I’ve ever reviewed in a while. I hope next month will deliver heavy stuff.

My Jaeger reunion hype was amplified by 3000 eggplants after this chapter

Loved the diversity in the new characters. Riener is so torn mentally & emotionally. I believe few more pages on the warrior are still needed before getting back to Paradise. I sense a glimpse of hope in escaping a doomed end. somebody will live & achieve freedom. who? hard to tell.

Everybody has different opinions about the plot, but I do not think anyone can argue about the art. Love this manga. Want to see Levi again!

I never imagined I could love these characters even more. Now I do. Bravo Isayama-sensei, I never felt so hyped for this chapter for the longest time!

Stop trying to make these new kids happen, Isayama. It’s not going to happen.

My interest in the manga is reaching an all time low with this focus on Marley. And it looks like we’ll still be there next month. I’m so done.

I haven’t minded these recent chapters, but I haven’t felt like I enjoyed them since its a virtually unknown cast. I did however enjoy chapter 93!

Fic recs? Fic recs!

For Fandom Fic Rec Days because this is a fantastic idea. These ones will be for Voltron, but if people want fic recs for other fandoms I’ve clawed through extensively (Batman, FMA, Young Justice, One Piece) I can do those too.

(Also, sorry to any writers who aren’t tumblr-tagged. I am terrible with names and probably don’t know you’re here. But I’ve still linked to your fic profiles in this case!)

AUTHOR SHOUT-OUTS:
a.k.a. “you should read everything they do it’s all quality okay”

@maychorian Okay look, if you are in any way excited that I’m in this fandom, you owe maychorian a big ‘thank you’ since she was unwittingly the reason I decided to stick around after watching S1. Boom Crash The Sound Of My Ship was one of the first fics I found after wandering into the fandom and holds a special place in my heart to this day. I have fond memories of eating up the whole series by staying up late or sneaking chapters at work on my breaks. I once hid in my car during my lunch break to read a chapter right after it released? Recs all around, just read all her stuff.

@bosstoaster You’ve probably read BT’s stuff already because who hasn’t but I don’t care I’m reccing her stuff anyway. BT writes everything. Like, everything. With a Shiro focus primarily, but she’s got a great handle on the other characters and will tackle such an insanely crazy variety of prompts I am continually stunned by whatever is produced next. Known for making you suffer but will make you laugh or feelz too. Special shout out to Spark to Ignite which is probably my favorite. Is this cheating because it was an exchange fic for me? Hell no. This was my One Thing that I desperately wanted to see in the fandom and it was not anywhere. BT did a fantastic job making it come to life and making me suffer but I asked for it so it’s okay and I reread this one all the time.

@butteredonions Where do I even START? So much good fic, guys. Onions fills my cravings for all things AU and she has such an insanely wide variety. If you like AU’s there is something there for everyone and they are always so well thought out and still fit each character so well. Also (in)famous for smol!Shiro, and I’m not actually partial to a lot of deaged!chars fics because people have a bad tendency to write toddlers and young children so innacurately, but this one is gold and so it’s great. But my personal fic shoutout is gonna go to The Throne In The Hall which is just all around amazing. Gorgeous imagery, great setting, solid plot, beautiful characterization, and badass fight scenes, this whole thing is just a delightful treat from start to finish.

@ashinan Has some great works all around and you should read it! I can’t speak for Ash’s ship fics because I’m not really into ships, but people swear by both Ghost of a King and Bombs and Bullets, so I assume they are top quality for ship stuff. Me? I’m gonna rec you all Something Strange which is the most best, shut up, I will fight you on this. Amazing piece that is the modern supernatural cryptids-and-ghosts AU I didn’t know I need until I read this. Amazing characterization and so many little details that I just love picking out of the narrative and basking in. This fic is both hilariously entertaining because of the group shenanigans and frightfully haunting because of the ghosts (pun sort of intended?) Ash has also hinted at maybe doing more for the series and I’m clawing at the walls waiting for it. Read now. Do it.

@mumblefox Rounding out the Think Tank, mumble’s work is worth checking out too! Like ash, a lot of mumble’s stuff is tagged for ships, which I don’t really do, but I absolutely adore Reconnaissance which is all I need to tell me mumble’s got top quality word weaving skills. Mumble does character dynamics wonderfully and I love watching Pidge and Keith work together in this, playing off each other both in the safe Castle environment and the heat of battle. There’s gorgeous imagery all throughout this fic and tons of little details buried in the narrative that just add so much character to the story itself. Also, I am a sucker for building any kind of alien culture or worldbuilding in general, and it’s here in spades.

GriffinRose: I don’t see this fic writer recced a lot? It’s a crying shame, they’re good at what they do. Lots of Keith-centric stuff but not necessarily in a shippy way (which is usually what I see for Keith-centric stuff), but they also tackle some other characters too! My favorite is actually Mama Holt because we see a lot of Matt and Sam hanging around the Castle with the paladins in fics but Pidge’s mom? Not so much. This is a sweet little piece that hits all my found family feels, in which Mama Holt ends up on the Castle of Lions and slowly ends up adopting absolutely everyone in it, and I love every word in it. Yes. Check out Griffin’s stuff, you won’t regret it.

INDIVIDUAL FIC RECS:
a.ka. the “holy shit I found this amazing story I love and you should read it” section

You Can’t Take the Sky From Me by isabeau225
Voltron fan? Firefly fan? This fic is the fic for you! Now a series and too damn adorable. Shiro’s not expecting any kids but somehow he just keeps getting more, and somehow he’s okay with that. Again, one of those fics that does child characters well. After I read this I squeed for half an hour and melted onto the floor.

Daemon fics are my other weakness…when handled well. The problem I see with a lot of daemon fics is that writers will include the daemons but they are there more as a prop then as another character. This fic does a GORGEOUS job of avoiding that pitfall and a BEAUTIFUL job of writing the daemon concept in space with these characters and I fell in love with it. Also has some very interesting interpretations of daemons that differ a bit from the novel, but in ways I really enjoy…like breaking some of the standards for what animals mean what personalities, or making touching another’s daemon less of a sexual interaction and more of a close trust or strong platonic bond kind of thing. Beautiful work. Check it out.

Absolutely gorgeous Shiro-centric (but also team based) fic. Hurt comfort in spades as Shiro tries to help the paladins and they try to help him at the same time. Some beautiful and haunting imagery in this one. Still a WIP, but I’m hoping the writer can finish one day. I believe in you :)

Of a Sort by hameru
For the sickfic fan. Shiro is really, really sick, and the others do their best to help him out. Also a WIP but the first two chapters are just…quality sickfic and will fill all your hurt/comfort needs by themselves. (Still will be excited when/if more posts though)

Empty Spaces by Oreramar
Kind of a modern AU without the space stuff. Shiro loses his arm in an accident and things start to go downhill from there, until he unexpectedly finds the perfect new career…in daycare. Again, one of those rare fics that handles kids well (although they’re kind of there peripherally in this one), and the modern AU aspect is handled really skillfully too. Makes you feel all happy inside when you’re done reading it. The kind of fic I would love to see more extension on, although I’m content with this too.

Shadows of our Dreams by KUG
Because sometimes you just need a cuddle pile. This one fills the niche for both cute and fluffy as well as angsty and hurt comfort. If you need all kinds of feels all in one place this is your one-stop shop.

Lean on Me by GlassSoldiers
Wouldn’t be a good fic rec without a good 5 times! This is one of my faves. Shiro looking out for all his team, and his team looking out for him. I’m a big fan of this theme, obviously, so this one really hits the spot. Everyone gets a chance to shine, which is great :)

how to win friends, influence people, and form voltron by brosura
A WIP but a very worth it WIP, holy crap, read this. An AU in which Keith doesn’t get booted from the Garrison, and ends up slowly integrating with the rest of the Original Trio. Primarily Hunk’s PoV too which is awesome. Double awesome, it literally just updated as I was writing this list, which means there’s a new chapter, which means I need to find time to read it. AAAAAH.

These are amongst my favorites. Good job to everyone on the list, and thanks for making my nights and work breaks exciting, for making me stay up late to finish just ONE MORE CHAPTER, for giving me something to read while eating, for giving me something to motivate me to get my own work done, and for giving me things to look forward to after terrible days. Love you all and this fandom has been amazing to me so far. :)

afirewiel  asked:

What is your favorite non-Austen period novel? Movie?

Okay I’m gonna do a rundown of all my favourites because making me pick one is just mean. (Also at one point in my notes on the following books and films I just wrote “Bagels” and I can’t for the life of me think what I might have meant or autocorrected that from. Maybe a shopping list started to take form. I don’t know.)

(If the film Miss Austen Regrets and book Longbourn by Jo Baker count as non-Austen then include them.)

Films:

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India - 2001 (Sports! High stakes! Sticking it to the Colonial Man!)

Mozart’s Sister - 2010 (Beautiful music! Gorgeous androgyny! GIRLS CAST TO PLAY THEIR ACTUAL AGE AND NOT SOME 20-SOMETHING PRETENDING TO BE FOURTEEN!)

Possession - 2002 (I’ve tried the novel, and A.S. Byatt has some beautiful prose but her structures sometimes do my head in, so never finished it. Ignore Paltrow as best you can and enjoy lush Victorian Gothic mystery and the ending is one of the most poignant things I’ve ever been pleasantly surprised with on film, and it leaves you wondering about many, many things…)

Jodhaa Akbar - 2008 (You could put Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the worst commercial ever made and I would watch it. Costumes, scenery, and, as a friend once put it “I’m not sure how they did it, but they just had a sex scene without any sex.” Bravo.)

Water - 2005 (Deepa Mehta is such a fantastic filmmaker and I loved this whole trilogy but Water is my favourite.)

Elizabeth - 1998 & Elizabeth: The Golden Age - 2007 (The costumes! The caMERA ANGLES!!! The compli-fucking-cated mess that is Elizabeth I.)

[Okay Tumblr won’t let me embed any more trailers, but those ones are easy to find, they’re out there.]

Vatel - 2000 (Any foodie who is also a fan of The Sun King and his era will dig this one. A great score, baddie Tim Roth.)

Alternatively, in the same era: A Little Chaos - 2015. Storyline is a little weak, but it’s so beautiful and the cast is great and the M U S I C. Kate Winslet. Alan Rickman. Helen McCrory. STANLEY TUCCI.)

Also: they’re not films, but TV shows - honourable mentions to the Spanish series Gran Hotel. It’s like a good version of Downton Abbey, only sorta on crack and with a tonne more murder mysteries; and while I have some Issues with its so-called hero and some comparatively weirdo plot-points in S3, overall, it’s fantastic and I’m obssessed. Please don’t mix it up with the Italian re-make which looks horrible in every way. Like, main actors dressed in a poorly-sewn-table-cloth-bad.

And shout-out to the new CBC/Netflix series Anne. I will defend this show to the DEATH, alright? They’ve gone bolder and fresher and have managed to involve period realism in a moving way while retaining the sunshine-and-pinafores element that so many people love about L.M. Montgomery’s work. There’s heaps of women with production credits, and I think it shows. Geraldine James is already my favourite Marilla after one episode, and I feel like R.H. Thompson (HEY JASPER DALE HEEEEY!) and Amybeth McNulty are likely going to become my favourite Matthew and Anne, too. People have complained about this series going off-book and in particular some have condemned it sight-unseen because the writers/directors are putting a feminist spin on it and OH GOD THEY SAID FEMINIST QUICK WE GOTTA SET EVERYTHING ON FIRE BECAUSE CHILDHOOD IS RUINED, but honestly it’s just perky and gorgeous and scrappy and nobody can tell me to my face that Kevin Sullivan didn’t go all the fucking way off-book from the very beginning so I am not gonna sit here and insist that the Megan Fallows Anne of Green Gables was perfection which could never be improved upon because that’s just a plain lie. It was nice and it has its place but it’s time for some new blood. (And NOT the telefilms they’ve also come out with recently with Martin Sheen, bless his heart, but they took a brunette child actor and dumped an atrociously stark box of red hair-dye on her before drawing on her freckles and then telling her to please play everything theatrically to the back of the house even though there is a camera ten inches from her face.) I am HERE FOR ANNE. RIDE OR DIE.

AND NOW, FOR BOOKS!

After that you might assume my L.M. Montgomery recommendation would be Anne of Green Gables and sure I won’t say DON’T read them, but for my money the Emily of New Moon trilogy is more my jam and I wish to God and Netflix in all my prayers that there might someday be a decent adaptation of them.

I was really into Cassandra Clark’s Abbess of Meaux mystery series for a time, but then things went a bit pear-shaped in what I think was the fourth(?) book and everything was OOC and honestly I haven’t caught up on the later books after that and they seem to be self-published now but I am a sucker for nuns and mysteries so I’ll probably get back into it when I have time.

The Princess Priscilla’s Fortnight and The Solitary Summer by Elizabeth von Arnim. Vacation-reads! Beautiful prose, some wry wit, and fun hijinks. If you’ve ever wanted to run away and live in an isolated cottage in the wilderness for a little while, these are for you. [ETA: I recently got my hands on a copy of The Jasmine Farm so THANK YOU to one of you who recommended it I am loving it so far only I don’t see the appeal in Andrew so wtf Terry you can do better.]

Edward Rutherfurd’s geographical history novels–Sarum is the classic to start with, but the others I’ve read are very good, too. (London, New York, and I’m now working my way through a first-edition of Russka.)

Amy Levy. A M Y   L E V Y. Criminally under-recognized Jewish Victorian novelist and poet. Novellas Ruben Sachs and The Romance of a Shop. (RS a beautiful and bittersweet story about the conflicts between love, identity, and expectations, and some would say a response to George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda. TRoaS reading a bit like a less treacle-sweet variation on Little Women, where four sisters try to make their way in the world by setting up their own photography studio in late 19th century London.)

The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgkin Burnett. Colonialist racism appears in this one, so be warned. Still the book is a THOUSAND times better than the utterly dreadful adaptation known as The Making of a Lady. Jane is better, Emily is better, Walderhurst is better, pretty much EVERYONE IS BETTER. The pacing is better. The plotting and suspense make actual sense.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. A classic, and the grand-daddy of every secret-identity superhero.

The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. Like, it makes me MAD how good these books are.

And last but not least, a non-fiction selection in Vere Hodgson’s WWII diaries: Few Eggs and No Oranges. Nothing else has ever brought the experience of living (or trying to) under the shadow of the bombs and the threat of invasion quite like these diaries. Fascinating details, engagingly written, and at times a stark reminder that the Allied victory we take for granted in our history could by no means be counted on by the millions who dwelt in daily uncertainty.

FINALLY WATCHED TANGLED BEFORE EVER AFTER

OKAY I LOVE IT

I mean it’s no Tangled (2010), but it’s a really good continuation of my favorite movie

Things I loved:

- everyone seems so in character (except one). Rapunzel is the sweetest girl and Eugene is hilarious. Pascal is the best friend anyone could ever have and Maximus is still rocking is charge. Getting to see more of those characters and others really helps in loving them more. Cant wait for more adventures

- Cassandra is awesome! I didnt like very much the fact that rapunzel was out at night with only her and no pascal or eugene in the music video but watching the whole thing makes perfect sense now! Sorry for judging too soon!

- Mom and Dad moments! I totally love how comprehensive her mother is and I love when she says ‘’I only ask that you’d be safe, smart and, above all, be true to yourself’’. I can also understand her dad’s point of view but since I didnt like him that much I’ll discuss that in the ‘’things I didnt like’’

- THE WIG THING. I had a huge problem with the wig when it appear on the trailers because it was never established in the world of tangled that those things existed and I really disliked rapunzel with it. It seem something more for beauty and the beast and it make me think of cinderella 2. But, again, after seeing the movie it all made sense. I knew whe was using it to hide the hair but its not something they just threw in, so I’m gald and sorry for judging too soon.

- the hair growing back again made sense (even tho she touched the stone thing and not the ground where the flower was but okay). I really want to know what are those spikes

- the animation is really cute and consistent

- OTP IS BACK YEAH - eugene is so romantic and caring and funny and protective and everything rapunzel deserves. I loved when he declared himself her best friend because yeah they can be a couple of best friends!

- I also liked cassadra’s realtionship with eugene. sassy buddies

- I love the songs! (even tho they’re few!!)

Thing I didnt like:

- some cliches or plot holes like the opening scene (where they want us to believe rapunzel is running from trouble when it was all just a game they took too seriously?? i dont get the point of it, it seems forced just to indruduce the world she wants to visit), why is a rat delievering a paper to lady cane, how did she got into the castle (just because you put a fancy wig doesnt mean your automatically royalty), there are few guards on jail because most where at the coronation doing their incompetent jobs?

- my biggest problem is the king. Yes, the man that cried so emotionally that made you cry, the man that cried even when his wife didnt, the man that even without any lines whatsoever thill now delievered a great and super emotional performace. That man is now a stupid cliche ‘’i want to protect you so you stay locked forever’’ father. Dont get me wrong, losing his dauther would probably make him take those decisions but he alwasy seems so strick with rapunzel for no need. I wanted him to talk to rapunzel with kind and sad eyes explaining things to her, how he feels and how he felt, what he fears and trusting her a bit more- but he’s always like ‘’dont embarrass me’’, ‘’dont go out’’. I think he’s reaaaaally out of character

- I understand why rapunzel said ‘’no’’ to eugene’s proposal but why did they create that situation where she would be forced to say no? she would have never said no otherwise. I think they deserved better

I think that’s all I have to say

CANT WAIT FOR THE SERIES

CANT BELIEVE MY RAPUNZEL IS BACK

So i've just recently started reading sterek fic. And i've completely fallen down that rabbit hole. So i was wondering if you could recommend some good fics as you seem to have been reading some recently? It would be amazingly helpful if you could. Thanks! - Sam

you’re damn right i can rec you some sterek! 😊 i tried to pick some that weren’t just on the first page when you rank by kudos. here we go:

sterek fic rec

Play It Again (ABSOLUTE FAVE. stiles’ characterization is PERFECT)
In which Stiles goes along with one of Derek’s plans and ends up in an alternate universe as a result. He should’ve known better. He did know better, actually, and that means he has no one to blame but himself.

Laura wants to lure the kid in with food and kindness and make a pet of him, like a feral cat. Derek wants to have him arrested for stalking. They’re at an impasse. (And the rest of the family is staying emphatically out of it in a way that suggests bets have been placed.)

Say Something (my favorite The Sheriff Finds Out scene ever)
That first time Stiles decided it was probably wise to let sleeping werewolves lie.

The Socioeconomic Repercussions of Mutually Assured Destruction
The trouble with having the kind of brain that likes to write essays on male circumcision for an Economics class, is that it also likes to turn PowerPoint presentations for Biology into odes on the perfection of notorious bad boy Derek Hale’s backside.

Fly a Little Faster
Everyone knows when you go back in time, you shouldn’t step on an ant, just in case you accidentally kill your own grandparent or something. But what happens when you go back in time and, uh, accidentally interrupt the one event that apparently made the Grumpiest Alpha in Town into a ball of mindless manpain?

Well, if Marty McFly can do it, so can Stiles Stilinski. All he has to do is get Derek and Paige to fall in love before he gets pulled back to his own time. And before he makes anything worse. That’s easy as pie, right? Right?

Hell Is Other People series
Stiles discovers the hazards of growing up a real boy when, at heart, he’s not a real boy at all.

Safety in Silence
It’s perfectly understandable. Even Derek wouldn’t want to be Derek’s soulmate.

Crash Landers
In which Stiles learns to Stalk That Stalk. (Or, how to accidentally woo your unfriendly neighborhood alpha in roughly five hundred handwritten steps.)

this boy, half-destroyed (don’t let the second person POV throw you off, it’s BEAUTIFUL)
Bodies – those are something you understand, mostly; you know immediately exactly how much smaller he is than the last time you saw him. Too skinny, too pale; his cheeks cave in a little too much, from his face. He’s a shadow of something: he looks like the dead walking. His hands are stuffed down in the pockets of his hoodie and he looks tentative but not afraid.

Derek Hale used to have a family. Now, he’s got a teenage human more trouble than he’s worth. Post-S2.

the blood blooms clean in you, ruby (same author, same concept, seriously, READ THEM BOTH)
You don’t remember, anymore, where exactly you were when you found out that she was dead. You remember almost everything else about her dying, though.

Stiles Stilinski has always been the person who will do what other people don’t want to. It’s hard, though, when your friends keep trying to protect you. Post-S2.

will to follow through (like, if i wrote teen wolf, this fic would’ve been season four. just absolutely 100% perfect, and i love danny mahealani)
“It depends entirely on how you look at it, I guess,” Stiles shrugs. “On the one hand, instant healing and the apparently inherited ability to pull off leather at all times. On the other, serious attitude problems and a suspicious disappearance of eyebrows.”

“Even Derek’s?” Danny snorts, “that’s a lot of eyebrow to lose.”

“I know,” Stiles agrees. “You should see, it’s so weird. Every time I want to ask him where they go, except he’d totally eat my face off.”

“There are worse ways to die.”

cool story, bro
FUUUUUUCK, is it a sweet valley high situation where Stiles is very aware that his twin is way more attractive and confident than he is, EVEN THOUGH THEY’RE IDENTICAL, and he always ends up with the hotter significant others and more friends and Stiles guesses that’s why he’s attracted to the pack at first, because it’s something that’s just his, not his twin’s too. But of course, Stiles’s twin gets bit and now he’s part of Derek’s pack, and Derek doesn’t snap at him like he snaps at Stiles, never slams him into things, fucking FIGURES, STILES’S TWIN GETS EVERYTHIIIIIIIING.

Hold The Door (Supernatural crossover but like… trust me)
When Derek is killed by a rival alpha, the pack will stop at nothing to get him back. Even if that means blackmailing the most dangerous hunter duo this side of hell. Whatever. That whole devil thing was probably totally exaggerated, anyway.

Apathy, Apathy, You’ll Be The Death of Me
Everyone’s apathetic. Except Derek. Derek cares so much.

or Boyd is a pragmatic posthumous reappropriater, Erica spends her free time impersonating Meursault and playing Fruit Ninja, Isaac would like everyone to settle down already, Stiles is bi, Scott’s actually holding it together pretty well for a week-old Alpha with a two pack problem, Jackson’s a lizard, Lydia accessorizes, Allison’s playing on a rival (semi-murderous) team and Derek just keeps showing up.

→ que tu m’aimais encore (read the fake boyfriend convention au by the same author after this one to cheer you up)
Wolves mate for life, don’t they?

But I’m Not a Soldier
The first time Derek shoves Stiles against a wall, she pepper sprays him in his face.

But The World Won’t Stop Turning (y’all know i can’t resist a time traveller’s wife au)
Derek glances at Stiles, who is watching him with a curious expression.

“Oh shit,” Stiles exclaims as comprehension dawns on him. “Everything makes sense now. Derek, I know what the witch did, she cursed you with – “

But before Stiles is able to finish his sentence, everything fades away and Derek is surrounded by darkness.

Pairing: Reader X Yoongi

Word Count: 5,841

Genre: Romance, Smut

Warnings: Cursing, Implications

Summary: After dating for almost 3 years, the armiys and Yoongi’s label have found out about your relationship. Now you have to deal with it in your extraordinarily normal life.

It was a supreme blessing that he had the next day off of performing. I knew later in the day Yoongi had to film some things for V Live and such, but he said I could tag along for those. I woke up first and it was about an hour before our alarm was set for. I wriggled out of his grasp and stood up, stretching as soon as my feet hit the carpeted floor. I tiptoed across the room to the mini fridge to search for possibly something to eat. I obviously knew he didn’t because he leaned on his bandmates for that. Hmm. That was a good idea. I was gonna go mooch.

I was just in one of his shirts at this point, so I pulled on the black robe he had so graciously hung in the closet and made sure to tighten it. I slipped on his slippers that were sizes too big on me and made sure to grab a room card. Surely one of the other boys rooms had to be close to here, so I guess I’d just- guess. I didn’t even bother trying to be quiet when leaving because I knew nothing could possibly wake him up when he knew he didn’t need to be.

I walked right across the hall to room 23 and knocked lightly on the door. When I heard movement in the room signifying someone was awake, I knocked a little bit louder. “(Y/N)?” I heard Jin’s accent clear as day. He opened the door and pulled me into a hug. “It’s good to see the reason I’m stuck sharing a room with Jimin.” I laughed. It would be just like Yoongi to request the solo room when it wasn’t his turn.

I ran over to Jimin who was sitting in a chair and basically tackled him. He laughed into whatever phone call he was in. “Yes, Alicia, she’s here and she’s okay. She’s also crushing my ribcage.” Leave it to them to be on the phone already. The two had become best friends since our first meeting and were inseparable even if they were countries apart. Most of the time I felt like I had two kids when I was around them together. Even the kind Jimin became a little demon with some pushing from the devil on his shoulder. “I’m gonna come see you during my break so we can see Guardians. You already saw it? Too bad, we’re going again. Haha, see ya.” Then he hung up and gave me a big squeeze.

“What are you guys doing today?” I asked, standing up and sitting onto one of their beds. It was made so I figured it was Jimin’s. Jin sat on the unmade one. Ahh, I was right.

“Well, we have filming later. I thought you guys were going to the movies?” Jimin asked, standing up and walking over to their fridge. He knew me too well, it was gross. “Iced Tea and frosted flakes good? We have milk too.”

“Yes, please. And something for the beast.”

“He’d be pissed if you ate and didn’t get him food.” Jin laughed. Jimin walked over with a handful of food and passed it over to me.

“Can one of you grab my keycard and swipe it for me? I’m not gonna be able to get it out with all of this food in my hands.” I stood up and Jimin grabbed it for me. “After you.” I chided and kicked the door open with my foot and he skipped over it holding the single card. I really should have had him carry the assorted breakfast packs and I just should have walked light of weight but I could never think that far ahead.

As I turned out the door, I dropped all of the food that Jimin had given me. There was my boyfriend standing in the doorway with a towel just sinking below his waistline as he pulled a cart of room service breakfast into the room. He winked at me and slipped into the room, dropping the towel outside of the door. Jimins sighed as he passed me up the keycard and he bent down to pick up all of the goods. “Prissy prissy, Yoongi…” He mumbled as I tightened the string wrapped around me on his robe.

“Sorry for being a pain in the ass!” I called and I jogged back to the room and let myself inside. “Please tell me you put on boxers.” I spoke as I didn’t even look in his direction but instead at all of the food he had ordered.

“You don’t wanna suck my cock for breakfast?” he teased, wrapping his arms around me and slipping off my robe. Before I could even protest he put one of his shirts over me and bent down to step my legs into a pair of panties. That means he definitely went into my suitcase and saw how much shit I packed. He was silently judging me and I knew it.

“Shut up.” I playfully hit his thigh and felt the fabric. Thank god. I leaned up and gave him a quick kiss. “Why are you awake?” I started to make a plate of food from the buffet he had ordered.

“We have a showtime to catch in an hour and a half. I gotta be ready.” He took the first plate I made, as expected, so then I began to make my own.

“Yoongi, I don’t understand Korean.”

“Lucky for you, you already saw it.”

The movie was great again and I stopped my complaining as soon as the trailers began, However, I found myself distracted. I could feel the eyes on the back of my head and it seemed that Yoongi was basically immune. He’d picked the best theater around and it just happened to be about an hour away from where he had to film. I had decided to tag along and chill behind the scenes but as my phone charged in the black van, I checked twitter. He was asleep on me, so it was okay.

“I knew it.” The whisper was soft.

There was a thread all throughout my mentions of the girl who was sat behind the ‘power couple’ at the movies. She’d started with that she wasn’t sure at first that it was him and I. He had a hat on, so she couldn’t see his hair color in the dark theater. Then he made some snarky comment and stared at me for my reaction. Then when I had turned to him, she’d caught a glimpse of my face and knew it. She put the thread in English and it was so broken, but I had the gist of it.

She had literally written down every detail of our date and it was almost terrifying. She wrote about how we shared the same drink and how during really funny moments Yoongi would lean over and translate for me. Every time I responded with I know and he just shrugged it off and continued to do it. She wrote about how he grabbed my hand a lot and rubbed over it with his thumb when our fingers weren’t laced together. She wrote about how I wouldn’t let him eat the popcorn before the trailers because I complained that he would eat it all before the movie even started. Then he bitched and bitched, but gave in. She wrote about how in love we seemed. How happy he was. How proud she was of him for being able to come out about the girl he loves and being confident with her. Confident about me.

I couldn’t decide if I should show him, but I knew that the boys would show him later so I didn’t bother. I kept glancing at him as he slept across my lap. His black jacket was unzipped, showing his plain white tee that he managed to make look like it was all that above his black jeans and black boots. His hat was on my head, the one with the rings on it, my favorite. He crinkled his nose every few moments and turned his head over and over. Everytime I fixed his hair because I knew it would bother me if it wasn’t perfect. He always appreciated that. Waking up with styled to perfection hair by yours truly. It was something so stupid, but he expected it at this point.

I was just in awe that he had dyed it mint green again. My favorite just to make sure this vacation with me was perfect. It’s like he knew I would come see him early and knowing him he did it while I was on my flight over. He was just so- exceptional. He made this whole distance thing easy and it was hard.

The worst was when it came to explaining him to my family. He’d met a good amount of them at this point, but at first they were very uneasy with it. My cousins would go on and on about how he was probably fucking someone else while he was on tour and my aunts and uncles thought I was crazy and joking for the first half a year of dating him. My grandmother was the only one who was so happy for me and filled with joy about me finding someone to love. Even if he was gone most of the time.

The first time I had mentioned meeting my family to Yoongi, he laughed his fucking ass off. He thought it was hilarious how I wanted them to meet him simply out of pettiness because they didn’t believe me. He declined and told me to ask him again when I wasn’t caught up in proving myself, but he swore up and down that he wanted to. I always believed him and there was never a doubt in my mind about that.

He first met them at my cousin’s wedding. I knew it was safe to bring him to this because nobody in my family had any clue about BTS or K-pop for that matter. He’d flew in early the morning of and had helped me do my hair. I was going to wear a dress, but he came in clutch with that too. He’d shown up with a silver and black dress that was very classy. Although, I was nothing compared to him. At this time he had black hair and he was dressed in Gucci just so I could show him off. He would never admit to me why he wore such an expensive suit, but I knew that was why. We always clicked over being petty.

I was knocked out of my thoughts by a familiar song. It was a Star Wars song, the Imperial March. I looked around in confusion only to see Yoongi’s phone lighting up. I shook my leg a little bit and leaned down to his ear. “Bear, you’re getting a call.” I nudged. He waved me off. “Honey beaaaaaar.” I dragged it out and he sat up. He kept his eyes closed and his face looked angry. Before he picked up the call I noticed that it was from skull emoji, skull emoji, skull emoji. So it was his label.

He answered and spoke with a nasty tone. I could only understand one thing of all of the shit he said in the 30 second phone call and it was “I’m on my way.” He angrily hung up the phone while I could hear another voice yelling coming through it and he store into my eyes. He reached his hand up and pinched my cheek then laid his head on my shoulder. He was gonna do this?

“What happened? Are you late for filming?” I shrugged my shoulder so he would get the message to sit up and look at me. He did.

“Nah, I thought that too. They’re mad I didn’t tell them I flew you out here and that I took my girlfriend on a date. Funny, isn’t it?” I felt an overwhelming feeling of regret run through me. So he’d gotten torn up because I wasn’t able to handle something. I suddenly felt his hand on mine rubbing around it and he peaked up to give me a small kiss. “Stop taking the weight of my job onto your shoulders. Forget all that shit and pay attention to me. I’m a bit of a narcissist so I’ll need it.”

I broke into full blown laughter and pulled him into another kiss. It ended there, along with him being conscious enough to speak to me. It baffled me how quickly he fell asleep after boasting about his own life. He was just so- cute. And he knew it too.

I ended up mostly on my phone as they filmed a gayo. I liked to watch them so I truthfully didn’t pay attention so I could be surprised later on. They were all so full of life in them and even excited to film them from what I overheard. I got lost in the world of memes and music until I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up from my screen to see one of the group’s managers. Great.

He motioned me to follow him and I did with the fakest smile I owned on. He led me out of the recording area and in the hallway. Then down it to an office. “Hey, how are you?” I was fake as hell, but I had to impress. Apparently, this was my boss too. I couldn’t help but to laugh at that one. Chul Bak was the name on the door. Ahh, this was one of their publicity people.

“I’m doing good. I see you and Suga are- doing good.” His sincerity was as real as mine. The higher ups never liked dealing with me too much. It wasn’t because I was this terrible person, but more of they didn’t like the idea of me. The idea that their precious Suga was in love with some normal American girl from New York.

“Better than ever.” I was snarky with that one, I didn’t mean to be. I just couldn’t help it. The amount of times this man and all of the others had begged me and bribed me to leave the love of my life was insane. Now, I guessed they were mad I was in Korea and not wallowing away in my hole of a town after their stunt.

“Suga invited you to set? And you two went out? Do you know how bad that-” I wasn’t in the mood.

“Do you know how bad it is for me that you tweeted out my job address? I can’t even do my fucking job.” I snapped. He was here to get mad at me for living my life when his team literally disrupted my alone life. They drove me to be in Korea for the final two days of the tour. They did this to me and he had the audacity to make me feel guilty about spending time with Yoongi.

He was silent for a moment. “Yes, we apologize for that. It was unprofessional.”

“And so is this meeting.”

Then I walked out of the room. Then down the hallway and out the door to the lot of studios outside. I was taking deep breaths and my exhales lasted forever. The door that had slammed behind me moments earlier opened again and slammed behind whoever walked out. I heard a huffing of breath and knew it had followed me.

“I figured you’d lose your cool.” he began. I crossed my arms and didn’t even turn to face him. “Listen here you little bitch.” Wasn’t surprised. Out of the building, off of the books. He wanted this. “You need to get off whatever high horse you’re on and stop mooching off of my group. You’re ruining them. I don’t care how much their little fans like you or anything, we don’t like you. We matter. We don’t give a flying fuck if you make Min Yoongi happy, we just care that he’s working and you’re a distraction.”

He paused for dramatic effect. “He doesn’t love you. He loves rebelling, darling. He’s the underground rapper bad boy that’s soft at heart. And he’s using you for attention. He’s an actor, an idol. His job is fooling the world and you’re just apart of it. So do yourself a favor and take these tickets.” He placed them by my feet. “And take that car over there and leave. Block his number and leave.”

Then he left me. The moment I was alone I sunk onto the pavement and sat on the curb. I didn’t believe him in any sense, but I couldn’t find any words to spite him with. All I could find was myself slowly breaking down from the stress and from being screamed at for simply existing. My hysterical crying began and my face was red from anger. If it could have turned blue, it would of too. Then maybe I’d be purple in this situation.

I was never this emotional. I had never cried as much as I had lately due to this shit going on. I was always strong and he fell in love with strong. The stringy mess I had been portraying myself of for the past 2 weeks was pathetic and I felt pathetic. Y/N Y/L/N was a strong woman who didn’t rely on anyone else for the majority of her life and it can’t end now.

Except for the fact that I was broke and I wanted to the pity. I wanted to be taken care of and to rely on another person instead of pulling myself back together again with shitty dollar store tape. I couldn’t do it alone anymore. I reached behind myself and tore up the ticket he left. Fuck that guy.

I dialed the number I knew by heart. I just couldn’t go back in there now. I took a large sniff to try to hide that I’d been crying before he picked up. “Hey!” he was out of breath. “Where’d ya’ go?”

“I’m uh-” I sounded sadder than I wanted too. “Needed fresh air, might be getting sick . It was stuffy in the-”

“You sound stuffy. “ he sighed, “What exit did you go out of? I’ll be there in 5 to go back to the hotel. I guess I can pack up the buffet to go…”

“I don’t want to ruin your set snacks.” Guilt.

“Nah, we can both enjoy it. Go to the car, actually. It’ll be easier. Don’t rub your eyes, they’ll be puffy all night.” Then he hung up with a quick love you before I could even respond. Always knew the way to my heart.

Then to the car I went. I was pretty sure he had no clue what had just happened to me and I was stuck on telling him or not. He’d just get angry and he had a temper most of the time. Then I’d end up apologizing and he’d get madder because I had no real right to be mad when I was the victim. Somewhere inside of me, I figured he’d know.

Minutes later when he got into the car, he knew. He totally knew. He was hysterical laughing. “So this guy that I’d only seen from a distance came up to me and apologized for my loss right-” he was speaking while chewing as well.

“Ah man.” I took a bite of the food. He had gotten a little bit of everything, but half the plate was mac and cheese. My favorite on set snack.

“And I was like what loss? What do you mean? And he was like ‘oh I saw Y/N outside and she was leaving with plane tickets without you’ and I was like huh?? Okay??? Alright. Then I told Namjoon to fire him because I didn’t want to deal with it anymore. I was in awe that he had said that to me, but what did he say to you?”

“I don’t think Nam can fire him, Yoos.” I looked at him and laughed. I was depressed before, but he always cheered me up. If I was his sun, he was mine too. We were both suns in this alternate universe I seemed to be living in. “He said you didn’t care about me.” He waved it off, almost choking from laughter and the food in his mouth.  “And he called me a bitch.” Then he stopped and swallowed whatever he had shoved down his tiny throat.

“He called you a name?” He put the plate down on the seat behind us and moved closer to me. His hand was rubbing my back while the other whipped out his phone and dialed a number. He never really liked to go above his leaders head so any bitching was done to Namjoon. It wasn’t like he didn’t know where to go, but he almost felt let it was disrespectful in a way.

“Hey, RM!” He started bright and cheery, which was different from the furious vibe he was giving off. “Yeah, I was totally serious before, you really need to fire that dude. He was lying and shit, yeah. But he fucking called her a bitch? You better talk to someone because if I ever see that man again I’ll probably beat the shit out of him and if he gets a punch in he’ll fuck up my face and it’ll be your fault that you made me talk to them. Thanks, bro. See you tomorrow.”

He smirked at me and stuck out his tongue, then his face became more compassionate than earlier. His hand was still on my back and he wrapped it around me and tugged me a bit closer. “That was hot, right?”

I sighed. “Whatever you say, stinky.” I leaned my head against his chest and I felt him sigh.. His eyes watched me and his now free hand went to my messy hair and combed through it. “Sorry if it’s knotty.” He laughed, it was always knotty. My hair sucked.

His phone made a bubble popping noise. His annoying text tone. His hand was out of my hair and right with his best friend. “The boys wanna know if you wanna get dinner tonight? They’re sad because they didn’t see you.”

“Yeah, of course. Do you have to come?” He scoffed, clearly offended. “I’m kidding, you baby. You can come, but do we have to go somewhere nice? You guys have a habit of taking me to places I can’t afford or even dress nice enough to belong in.”

“I’ll dress you, feed you, and impress you, just like I’ll do with our kids one day. Don’t call me a baby if it’s not in a hot way, c’mon.” He moved away from me and stretched, getting ready for his hundredth nap of the day. If anyone had a problem, it was him. Then there he was, on top of me again. He was passed out within moments, but his head was directly on my- you know- and I couldn’t move him. I was ready to die.

Once we got back to the hotel, I was the one to pass out while Yoongi slipped out of the room for some shopping for me. He had ripped open my luggage to see if I had anything suitable and I wasn’t quite sure why he looked. Of course I didn’t. He really wanted to have more faith in me than he should have.

Then I woke up to the most beautiful dress I had ever seen hanging on the wall in front of the bed. I shot up in shock and almost levitated towards it. The price tag was ripped off onto the ground. Clever of him, he knew if I saw the price I’d return it automatically, which could only mean it was expensive. Before even touching the beautiful gold champagne colored dress in front of me, I bent over and picked it up.

“Herve Leger Iman.” I read out loud, my voice was drowned out by the noise of running water in the bathroom. “Never heard of th- woah. Yoongi!” I yelled, bursting into the bathroom. “You spent 1,350 dollars on a dress for a dinner with your band?!”

His laughed echoed. “It’s a very nice dress, oh thank you Yoongi! I love you so so much!” he mocked me in a tone that sounded nothing like me. “And I love the other dress you got me for the concert tomorrow! I’m so glad you make sure I’m dressed nicely to be seen out in public with the idol Min Yoongi! You are so talented!” His voice became normal as he turned off that water. “Is what I expected. Now, go get dressed.”

Without a word, I walked out and stripped on my way to the dress. It was a beautiful metallic gold champagne, which was different than the mostly black dresses he bought me. It had a low, sweetheart neckline and tapered straps. Now, fully naked, I went into my suitcase to find the perfect beige bra and matching panties. With that, I scrambled for deodorant and pulled his big robe on again so I could do my makeup without destroying the beauty (and money) in front of me.

Even though this dinner was some fancy thing, I was far from it. My hair and makeup were boring, even though my dress was extravagant. I was feeling confident, however. I got my winged eyeliner right on the first shot. My hair wasn’t frizzy either, it must be the new country giving me good luck for once. I curled it with my wand and used a light amount of hairspray so it would hold in place for the night and I could just re-curl it tomorrow for their show.

“Yoongi!” I called for him as I unzipped the dress and stepped into it, “I need help with the zipper!” I held it up as I walked towards the bathroom door, banging on it. “C’mon, don’t make me go across the hall.”

No response. I groaned and grabbed a key card. I paraded out into the hallway, holding up my beautiful dress and banged on Room 23. Nobody answered the door there either, so I tried Room 21.

“Hello?” There was an unfamiliar voice as the door creaked open. “You’re the girl that ran into me last night!”

I stood in embarrassment. “Uh, sorry- I got the wrong room-”

His eyes were dark as he stepped towards me and I stepped in the opposite direction, my hand clenching tighter on the grip of my dress. “I mean, I’d let you run into me again, if you want that… I see you’re half undressed already.”

I always thought when I was faced with a situation I could get out of, I’d run away. That I wouldn’t stop like a deer in the headlights. It always seemed like such a weird thing when on tv or in a movie that a person would stop when faced with a situation they could have easily run from. Like a car coming at you from a farther distance or a man with a knife in front of you. Or this man.

This would have probably been the moment I would have died if a half dressed Jin didn’t run into the hallway moments after my perfuse banging on the door to pull me back into their room.

“Was I frozen?” I asked, barely understanding what had happened moments earlier. “Was I almost jus-”

“Yeah.” Jin’s voice was sullen and he zipped up the back of my dress without me even asking. He buttoned his pants and extended an arm towards me, which I gladly took. When we stepped back out into the hallway, the door for Room 21 was closed. I let myself back into my room and we gave each other silent nods. Jin and I had always been close. He always vibed as my other brother figure and I absolutely loved him for that.

Yoongi was standing in the center of the room, slipping to his shoes. “Where’d you go?” he asked, walking over to a mirror.

I cleared my throat, “I need the zipper pulled up, so I could put on my shoes. Jin… Jin helped me.” I wasn’t gonna tell him. I didn’t wanna ruin this night and make him stay in or get arrested. I’d be hated even more and my wings were perfect today, so I didn’t need it.

He ran over to the closet and I swear it was the fasted I’d ever seen him move. “You look amazing in that, but imagine how amazing you’ll look tomorrow in this!” He pulled out another dress and held it in front of his big gummy smile. Man, did he love spoiling me. He also loved making me embarrassed and he knew buying me things did just that. Especially if they brought attention to me, like this one would.

I knew that dress he was holding, It was a Monique Lhuillier Illusion Dress. It was almost 4,000 dollars and I’d pointed it out a few weeks ago to him, saying how beautiful and vibrant it was. Along with expensive. The color was what really intrigued me; It was called gunmetal. It was a midi dress with sequins. The color was a silver, blackish color with an illusion neckline. It was breathtaking and attention-stealing.

“And I got you these white heels to wear with it from payless.” He snorted. “I really went all out on those, let me tell you.” He hung the dress back up and I walked over to him in his Saint Laurent jacket and wrapped my arms around him. The two fabrics meeting was a harsh feeling, but I squeezed him as hard as I could.

“I love you.” I mused, looking up at his button face. He leaned down and kissed me then mocked me by repeating my words in his stupid voice. I just smiled instead of responding with something snarky as I pulled away. “Where are the shoes for this dress? I’d wear those white ones, but it would look super weird.”

He froze. “I may have forgotten to get you shoes for that dress.” We both took deep breaths and sharply exhaled at the same time. “…Are you gonna wear your converse.”

“I’m gonna wear my converse.” I spoke over the end of his sentence and his face was simply buried in his hands. Leave it to us to make a fancy dinner even better. Oh, twitter was gonna be fun tomorrow.

Of course, they were all dressed to the nine’s. They had all seemed to dress like they were headed to some award show tonight, but in reality it was a fancy dinner that I had deemed the pre end of tour dinner. They’d have another one of these tomorrow and knowing them it would be at some low scale place. They were chill guys for such ‘important’ people.

Being around the seven of them was always a joy. The absolute love and friendship they had for each other was so impressive. Especially the fact that they weren’t sick of each other yet. I’d seen them have their tiny arguments, but they always went back to being best friends in minutes. Back to being brothers in almost an instant.

They were the goofiest guys I’d ever been around and the most embarrassing people I could be with in public. For guys that were always in the back of someone’s mind and their vision in public, they were loud and obnoxious. We were at one of the fanciest restaurants around and they had just been told to quiet down and to please stop flinging food. They weren’t doing it to be rude. They just got so caught up in each other and being happy.

The waiter was completely starstruck when he first walked over to the table. He couldn’t believe all of BTS was out together and came to his job. Neither could his manager and neither could any of the waitstaff when they all gathered around. They were fawning over the boys and just in awe. Eventually, I asked Yoongi to ask them if they wanted me to take a picture of all of them with the boys.

When he asked, I could almost see them crying.  They were all eager, but I could tell none of them wanted to be that guy who asked for the picture. I was handed up 12 different phones and took about 5 pictures on each of them to be courteous. They all kept saying thank you in english and I couldn’t do anything except smile and nod my head to show that it was no problem at all.

Jungkook and I had ended up in an intense conversation about video games. Tae kept trying to butt in, but the younger one kept pushing him out. He kept calling him Gucci and shoving his face away. It was hysterical. Kook was to my left, while Yoongi was on my right. His hand was on my thigh 90% of the night, rubbing around it just for some kind of skin on skin. I had shook him off when he tried to hold my hand because he was sweaty and I didn’t need that right now.

“Stop kicking him out of the conversation, Kook. He knows his stuff too.” I finally defended the fashion forward man. “Who have you mained lately?”

Tae looked like he was extremely confused when I actually asked him a direct question. “Uh, uh, uh Reaper!” he yelled out, causing a large laugh from all 3 of us. “Yeah, Reaper!”

“You really know your stuff!” Jungkook said extremely sarcastically while mocking his hyungs exact tone over and over. What a kid.

“The question we’re all dying to know the answer to-” I heard Hoseok loud and clear from next to my boyfriend. “Why are you wearing converse?” We all erupted into laughter as Yoongi’s head clunked onto the table next to his plate.

“That would be my fault.” He lifted his hand into the air, waving it while wiggling his fingers. “It blanked on my mind when I saw this dress.” He sat back up and ran his hand, open palmed up my side. All the way to my shoulder and then back down to my thigh, not breaking contact. “Suddenly I had other things in my head than shoes.”

They all made wooing noises and I couldn’t help except to sigh and blush. For the quiet one, he was never too shy about his- personal life. At least, with them most of the time. The other part was him being extremely secretive and that was his favorite type of lifestyle. The lonely one.

Well, it used to be.

A/N: Thanks for reading part 2! The feedback on the first part was crazy for me and I loved it! Thank you guys a lot. I hope you’re enjoying this so far and keep up with me, I’d love to know what you guys thought and just want you to know that my requests are open! I love writing lmao til next time!

16 IN ‘16: Jake’s Picks

Reflecting on the year with the 16 songs - new or old - that soundtracked our respective 2016s.

1. “Pt. 2″ - Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
This song opens up the playlist because it is quintessentially 2016. And by that I mean that it’s confusing, a banger, full of memes, and really sad.

2. “Ivy” - Frank Ocean - Blonde
I love Blonde, but it took me a little white to get there. The amorphous, hypnotic album doesn’t have any particular hits, but the raw emotion of the piece as a concept made the 4-year wait worth it. “Ivy,” the second track, is one of my favorites, because you practically feel yourself falling in love right alongside Frank. We see that theme across this list and across 2016 - a departing of more traditional pop sounds for dreamy, wavy hooks combined with jarring, inventive noise.

3. “RedBone” - Childish Gambino - Awaken, My Love!
Awaken, My Love! was ultimately a little disappointing, IMO. But oh my god, this song is so good. Make no mistake - this is baby-making music. If you are not making babies to this song, you are listening to this incorrectly. I went to a listening party for the album and I’m 80% sure this song turned the tide of the 30+ dates I was watching unfold around me. It’s that potent. Handle with care.

4. “All Night” - Beyonce - Lemonade
YO, 9:30! I’M REALLY HAPPY FOR Y’ALL, IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUT LEMONADE IS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME. Okay, maybe not of all time, but you don’t have to be a resident member of the Beyhive to tell that this album is straight fire. It’s got everything - the black power anthem, a rock song with Jack White that sounds freshly cut from Yeezus, and even a country song with the Dixie Chicks. Lemonade is a cross section of what 2016 was - a year of cacophonic harmony. But I chose the penultimate number, “All Night,” to be on this list on slightly different grounds - it is a beautiful, emotional story of admiration, real, unselfish love for another human being. Yeah, it reminds me of my girlfriend. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

5. “With That” - Young Thug - Barter 6
Okay, back to that dirty s**t. “With That” is nasty. It makes you scrunch up your face and vibe. Young Thug really broke through in 2016, and as did his genre, the disdainfully-named mumblerap, spawning proteges such as Desiigner and Lil Yachy. Can you make out the words he’s saying? Maybe not. Do you know that it’s some real s**t? Absolutely. Though Barter 6 came out in 2015, Young Thug makes music so fast the album is already 5 albums back (I’d start with Barter, it gets a little sketchy from there). Young Thug is pushing the envelope for rap by breaking every rule in the book.

6. “Wolves” - Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
When I heard “Wolves” on my first listen through of TLoP, it was all but confirmed: Kanye West has lost his damn mind. “Wolves” is a great song buried in the back end of Pablo, and explores Kanye’s love for his wife, Kim K. It spends 5 minutes comparing Kim’s relationship history: her sex tape, followed by her televised wedding, and subsequent divorce after 72 days to the biblical story of the Virgin Mary. “Wolves” is an awesome song, though, regardless of the fact that it is probably played repeat during Donald Trump’s appointments with his team of expert cheeto dust appliers.

7. “715 - CR∑∑KS” - Bon Iver - 22, A Million
22, A Million came out on the 30th of September this year, and felt like that second that your ears pop. 2016 demanded toughness from all of us. “715 - CR∑∑KS” was sweet, sweet emotional release. It’s the best album of 3016. It will make you smile, take a deep breath, then go look out a window. Please go listen to it.

8. “Rome” - Ratatat - Magnifique
Ratatat is a pretty unknown band whose biggest claim to fame is producing the beat of the 2009 Kid Cudi hit, “Pursuit of Happiness.” They are also my favorite band. Though Magnifique came out in 2015, I saw Ratatat at Echostage in January, and I have no words. Psychedelic rock is awesome. “Rome” crescendos to a powerful, hypnotic riff before dropping to almost silence, and building back up to an insane musical orgasm. It’s a flawless song. Plus, Ratatat is awesome, and more people need to know about them. They make life music.

9. “Some Minds” - Flume - Single
Listen to me right now: If Mozart was alive today, he would be standing at the front bar of a Flume show. I saw Flume at 9:30 this fall and legitimately melted. This man builds music from sounds that don’t exist in the natural world; he literally pulls music OUT OF THIN AIR. I’ve seen this song’s drop put people in an actual trance. Like Young Thug, Flume has led the charge of a new sound in EDM, and this song in no exception. His newest album, Skin, came out in 2016, and it amazing. This song is amazing. Flume is amazing. You’re welcome.

10. “Dirty Work” - Herobust - I’m Aloud
Dirty Work is not for everyone. I got into EDM especially hard this year, though I was very hesitant at first. It’s hard to keep up with EDM from the outside: so many DJs, how it all sounds kinda the same, and of course, the drugs. But if you don’t like EDM, especially if you don’t like EDM, listening to this will give you a taste of how inventive the genre has gotten. What is this??? It sounds like industrial machinery. It sounds like a transformer falling down the stairs. It sounds like a dial-up modem. But why…can’t I stop… dancing????

11. “Safe” - Dumbfounded - We Might Die
“Safe.” This is a guilty pleasure song for me, one of the 17 people in the DMV who has a passion for the LA rap scene and knocksteady radio. This woke af song is off Dumbfounded’s new mixtape, We Might Die, and discusses the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood. By the numbers, I probably listened to this song more than any other song in 2016, and I’m not close to ashamed. Dumbfounded is known as a lyrical god out west, and he is gonna be in DC on February 4! Go see him! Do it!

12. “One Dance” - Drake - Views
Yeah, I couldn’t not. This was the uncontested jam of the summer, never failing to get me and every 20 something woman around me doing our best Drake, or our most cultivated Rihanna. The song also brought dancehall and Afrobeat music to the mainstream, making summer sixteen especially awesome.

13. “Untitled 7″ - Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered.
Okey doke. It’s hard for me to not overreact and call this the best song of the year, but I don’t think I could name a better one. Kendrick Lamar developed untitled unmastered. from the floor cuttings of To Pimp A Butterfly and accidentally created a series of songs that rival the full-length albums of his contemporaries. A jazz, trap, hip-hop fusion, “Untitled 7″ is the cherry on top of an already insane series of songs. It is close to being a perfect song. Production-wise, the beat of “Untitled 7″ is hallowed ground: other rappers won’t touch it. I think about Kendrick when I’m asked about how music can change the world. Lamar’s voice echoes around the song, half taunting, half challenging the rap game as a whole to get on his level: “Levitate, Levitate, Levitate, Levitate.”

14. “Alright” - Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
2017 is the beginning of a new chapter for the world. Will we find the strength to love and trust each other, rising to the challenge of our planet’s greatest tests? Or will we succumb to the darkest impulses of humanity? “If God got us, we’re gon’ be alright.”

15. “Come Down” - Anderson .Paak - Malibu
Anderson .Paak killed it this year with his release of Malibu. I had followed Anderson for a long time, first as Breezy Lovejoy, then through many short-lived projects, until this final form. “Come Down” is a great song, an energetic, groovin’ tune like only a west coaster can make. I’m excited to hear more from this guy in 2017, and I don’t see him going anywhere but up.

16. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” - Kanye West - Graduation
This song is always important to me, this year included. Kanye may be a bit of a kook sometimes, but here’s a good point: keep your head down, get tough, do what you say you’re gonna do. Those haters are going to keep coming, no matter what. But when you get your money? Then, they cant tell you nothing. It’s not the worst resolution, wouldn’t you agree? Happy holidays and good luck in the New Year!

Hi so I just went through your like analytical posts on trc and I noticed you seem to really like blue. The series for me started to get kids lackluster after tdt and one of the things that I think contributed to that was actually blue, not just plot-wise but character(isation)-wise too. I really absolutely adored her in trb - she stood up for herself, she was conscientious, and she was just really honest in fair way, if that makes any sense. Anyways I felt like she slowly became something (1/2)

Of a joke almost. It’s hard to describe but sometimes she came across as being like super offended over everything and reading too much into things. Sort of like how people go “oh sjws on tumblr.” I felt like she lost her depth and a lot of the time malggie only remembered this aspect of her and the fact that she was sensible. I’m sorry if this doesn’t make any sense it’s really hard for me to put into words. I’m just wondering I you noticed any specific differences in early and late blu e (2/2)

sorry for my delay in answering this, I saw it a couple days ago on mobile and haven’t been on the computer much. this response would be more informed if i’d actually get around to my reread haha, so just now that i haven’t reread in a while and as such my memory isn’t the freshest. also i’m incapable of answering asks succinctly so BUCKLE UP

i def think that blue was sidelined a lot. she was introduced as the main character, our entry point into the series, but in the end didn’t really get to do much, and it ended up not being her story as much as the others’. that said, i guess the main thing I disagree with in your message is that it was only in trb that blue was at her best. we often consider bllb to be adam’s book but imo blue was great in bllb, and i think that book probably has the most in-depth exploration of blue. in bllb we see blue without her mother, with things in her life changing rapidly (her relationship with gansey; her position in the gangsey; noah’s state of being; her family unit, with maura’s disappearance and persephone’s death and the gray man) and kind of struggling to deal with all that, and i personally found it effective.

16 Days of Outlander - Day #1 Sassenach

So excited to have an excuse to rewatch Season 1 all the way through (I realized that I’ve watched the first eight episodes way more times than the second eight, despite the fact that I only watched the first eight for the first time the day before the second half of Season 1 started airing).

Fair warning: I’ve been trying my hand at screen caps to go with the posts for this 16 Days of Outlander.

Anyway, onto my favorites for 01x01 Sassenach.

Favorite performance: Caitriona Balfe. From the beginning of the episode through the end, she has so much to do to carry and establish the story and not just for the episode, but for the series. What gets me every time is the scene below when she learns the war is over. Everyone else is celebrating and while I wouldn’t say she’s disappointed - she’s far too compassionate for that - she does immediately look lost. Having just come from that horrible leg injury, there’s clearly still work to be done but when her friend tells her “it’s over” I can’t help feeling that there’s a little bit of Claire that feels like her usefulness is already slipping away. To convey such depth right off the bat in the episode floors me every time.

Favorite Claire and Frank Moment: Jumping on the bed. There are little glimpses of the marriage Claire and Frank used to have (few and far between, though they may be) but those glimpses show enough of what they’re both trying/hoping so hard to recapture - namely the levity they felt before five years of war - that I can’t help loving this little moment. It’s clearly going to take work if they are going to have any chance of succeeding - I mean, immediately after getting into their room, Frank just takes out a book and starts reading. It shows a little better the balance/dynamic they once had. Claire helping Frank not to be too serious all the time; Frank helping rein in some of Claire’s wilder tendencies. It isn’t as great a balance as she will have with Jamie but it probably worked better for Claire and Frank before the war changed them so much as individuals.

Favorite Location: Reverend Wakefield’s library/study. I mean just look at it! That fireplace, that window, how open and light it is. I would love to have a room like that to work and play in - it’s got plenty of room for both. Totally personal taste on my part but just… love it, want it, don’t care that we hardly spend any time there this episode (and can’t wait till we get another look at it later).

Favorite Minor Character: Mrs. Graham. In working on my Jamie through the stones fic, I’ve gotten very attached to Mrs. Graham as a character. I also love Claire’s surprise when she realizes that Mrs. Graham is one of the “druids” dancing at Craigh na Dun. She’s just one of those characters I really wish we could have more time with in the series as a whole.

Favorite Scene, Favorite Book-to-Screen Adaptation Moment: Frank’s encounter with Jamie’s ghost. One scene, two favorites. This is the scene I go back to and rewatch over and over and over. The lighting, the perspective, the sound mixing/editing… I just love everything about this scene. And it’s a scene I’ve enjoyed analyzing so much in the book. That you can see Frank watching Jamie watching Claire: Frank’s attention on Jamie and the fact that he is watching his [Frank’s] wife; Jamie’s complete absorption in watching Claire fighting with the curls he loves to much. The haunting way he just vanishes when Frank turns and the lightning illuminating Frank briefly before all the power in the square goes out just emphasizes the significance of that moment so subtly and so well.

Favorite Costume: Claire’s night gown. I’m not a huge fan of the 1940′s costumes - I find the 18th century costumes more impressive but we don’t see too many of them this episode. This costume is also one of the most “traditionally” feminine costumes Claire wears. A lot of her 1940′s dresses have sleek lines but this flows and billows.

Favorite Music Moment: Claire gets shot at (Fallen Through Time on Volume 1 of the Outlander Soundtrack). I am addicted to television and film scores and the music for Outlander is definitely up there on my list of all time favorites (seriously, at least a third of my iPod is instrumentals from soundtracks - about 2 days worth of music). The transition in this scene as Claire stumbles around the woods trying to figure out what just happened to being shot at by the Red Coats is perfected by the shift in the music from quiet and innocuous to loud and raucous (courtesy of some amazing bagpipes and drums/bodhran).

Favorite Jamie and Claire Moment: Cocknammon Rock. It’s after they’ve been riding for a while - Claire has already fixed his shoulder which has earned her a few points with Jamie - and when she mentions the Red Coats’ preference for Cocknammon Rock as an ambush point, Jamie doesn’t hesitate to believe and trust her word. He alerts Dougal immediately and when Dougal basically asks, “are you sure?” Jamie takes one look and Claire and asserts, “yeah, he’s sure.” Then Dougal gives the order and Jamie promptly dumps Claire off the horse and breaks free of the belt she used to bind his arm to his side.

Favorite Line, Favorite “This wasn’t in the book” Part: “On your horse soldier.” Another two-fer. I love this line that wasn’t in the book, so much so, it’s my favorite in the episode. Seeing Claire in action at the beginning of the episode when the war ended balances nicely with this line (and scene of her healing in action) at the end. They’re scenes when her mask/facade drops completely - no polite smiles or wary/guarded looks, just Claire at her most competent. The scene passes from Claire cursing at Jamie in frustration through the more somber and serious hint from Jamie about just how dangerous BJR is and ending it with this more light-hearted, mildly affectionate, but respectful note adds to the understanding that has begun to develop between Jamie and Claire.

Favorite Performance Honorable Mention: Sam Heughan. Claire may not be consciously aware of Jamie’s feelings for her for a while but his falling for her occurs hard and fast - both on the page and on the screen. The ability to capture in that one glance what I tend to think of as Jamie’s enlightenment about his feelings, could not have been easy but there it is, broadcast for all to see. Jamie is entirely hers in that single moment by the roadside as she curses him for being too stubborn to admit he was hurt and needed help (basically, Jamie in a nutshell).

Michael After Midnight: Guardians of the Galaxy

So as you may well know, I loved Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I can safely say it’s my favorite movie ever made… or one of them, anyway. While I do think it is marginally better, there is a marginally there, and I gotta be honest, I still love part one just as much in its own way. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the coolest, freshest, and most out-there superhero comic book movies of the past decade, and a stylish change of pace for the sometimes very formulaic MCU.

But who could have guessed that? The MCU was known for taking the less famous heroes in its roster (Since they didn’t have Spider-Man, the X-Men, or the Fantastic Four to work with) and turn them into juggernaut blockbusters, but did anyone really guess that they could take a bunch of characters as obscure as the Guardians and make a quality film with them? And that’s not the only reason this movie was a gamble; this movie was almost totally detached from the rest of the MCU and its overarching plot, with the appearances of Thanos and the Collector (both of whom only appear in a single scene, though the Collector also pops up in a post-credits stinger) being the only connection to other movies, and even then, both characters were relegated to stingers to foreshadow future movies anyway! And then you have to throw in the fact that the movie is directed and written by a guy who directed cult movies and the horrendous Movie 43, the fact that one character is a talking tree, the fact another character is a talking raccoon who uses guns, and the fact the MCU is locked out of using characters like the Skrulls, Galactus, and the Silver Surfer… you can kinda see why this was a risky move on their part.

But oh boy, did it ever pay off. Rave reviews, audience love, and people hyped for more… it’s safe to say that Guardians is one of the best films in the entire MCU, and it really set itself up as a nearly impossible act to follow, which is all the more impressive seeing as it came after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, ANOTHER very tough act to follow. So, now that we have all this context, why are Peter Quill and his rambling gang of space jerks so endearing and enjoyable? Well, here’s the story:

Peter Quill was a young Earth boy taken in by the alien Yondu and his band of Ravagers on the eve of his mother’s death by brain tumor. Decades later, Peter is all grown up and calling himself Star-Lord, and is now about space pirating. Unfortunately for him, the latest trinket he stole (and left Yondu out of the loop on) is something that the Mad Titan himself, Thanos, is looking for. Thanos sends his daughter Gamora out to retrieve it, and at the same time, bounty hunters Rocket and Groot decide to take Quill in for the price on his head. All of them fight and end up in prison, where they meet Drax the Destroyer, a man who desires vengeance against Ronan the Accuser, a fanatical Kree renegade who serves Thanos. These unlikely allies decide to team up to escape the prison they’re trapped in and head off to sell the object for massive amounts of cash; however, Ronan is hot on their tails, desiring the object for himself. Can these knuckleheads stop bickering long enough to make some big bucks, or is Ronan going to destroy them all?

YURI!!! ON ICE EPISODE 8

OK. Time for my review of tonights episode, being a fucking rollercoaster of emotions like always

this episode starts with our smog angry kitten yurio arriving with Yakov and Mila and the old ballet-lady whose name I’ve forgotten

he’s greeted by a bunch of fans but apparently he’s not much into fangirls, ‘cause he runs off

and apparently he’s not the Russian Runk anymore, now he’s the Russian Ice Tiger (more like smol angry russian kitten tbh)

he’s meeting his cute russian gramps who picks him up and when he sees him he’s not a smol angry kitten anymore but a cute ball of fluffi- and happiness

I mean, look at this cutie

he brought him his FAVORITE FOOD Y’all I’m dying

now we know where all the angriness and the “lol me no care” attitude comes from, that stare though

the look when you’re getting scolded bc gramps thinks you don’t like his food anymore lmao so relatable

I love how we get a little insight on his mind I mean he’s a fucking precious cupcake that needs to be protected at ALL COSTS

then we get to see Viktor who looks even more badass and ah-ma-zing than he usually does (hm, I wonder why??? maybe bc he’s happy with his cute bf)

lmao I’m a rockstar pls fuck off

but then he sees Yurio is suddenly all happy and touchy and fatherly even though Yurio is his usual pissed angsty self - but Viktor doesn’t give a single fuck he adores him anyways

the look when you’re forced to be the center of attention, so miserable

the look when your kid acts a little off but you don’t care because your kid is a small perfect angel anyways

scenery switches to Yuuri who’s kinda stoked that he literally has no friends around him this time (and his bf doesn’t count)

then we’re introduced to his high-premium skaters, but I’d like to call them high-premium visages bc their faces are a whole new level of hilarious

I mean look at them (and for the record, the two on the right are brother and sister even if you’ll need time to understand that bc he’s overprotective AF about her and kinda obsessed?? and the guy on the left wants into her panties bc she’s an italian beauty)

we’re also introduced to the Korean Skater Lee and he just doesn’t give one single fuck about anything really

a lot of glances are shared and apparently the italian beauty (who’s called Sala) knows Yuuri and looks really happy to see him (bitch stay in ya lane he has a boyfriend and is overall happy and shit)

then the angry Korean Lee says some rude shit (not even that rude) to her bc he doesn’t give a shit

and her and her brother don’T take it so well (again, their faces what are they???)

and Lee could not care less

Yuuri decides it’s time to leave in silence and just take the other elevator bc they do take their time fighting

but no! who could that be? who’d wear lilac cheetah sneaker?

why u blushing bitch

bc apparently the Russian Ice Tiger (who wears cheetah instead of Tiger Stripes, kinda ironic) is intimidating AF

but Yuuri is really happy to see him again and like always Yurio’s threatening him with keeping Viktor in Russia (but at this point no one really takes that for serious, ugh)

OH MY a small glimpse at my cute babies Leo and Guang-Hong! Oh how I miss them! I need them to have more screen time, or like their own SPIN-OFF! (make that happen pls)

Wow, look at that narcissistic guy over there wonder what his name is, oh Jean-Jacques? Not even surprised

but more on him later

then we get a quick look at Lee twerking his ass off (wondering who he’s tryna impress???)

and of course the king of grimaces and his sister (he’s kinda hot tbh) and btw everyone calls him Micky!

dem legs! that grace! yakovs face!

and of course: the gays

Plus, Phichit kinda lost his chill

Minako, who is all of us trying to watch the new episode lmao

and those three precious babies who are also totally relatable to every fangirl (but their mom too, kinda)

I don’t give a fuck is the first to compete and he wears a really nice piece of clothing that kinda reminds you of a parrot

Sala is totally in awe, Emil annoying Micky like usually (at least what we’ve seen up to now)

he doesn’t look 18 tbh, more like 26

that look, why aren’t those two dating?? (I know not everyone can be gay in this series *sigh*)

then again we see this guy

who kinda invades Vickys personal space

finally someone who actually expresses his happiness about his score

now it’s Mickys turn (and this still doesn’t look like a healthy brother-sister relationship tbh)

he’s fit

with that face expression he should totally meet Chris sometime

his biggest fangirl

he really hates that Emil is after his sister lol

all he thinks about during his performance is his sister and we get some really cute and glamorous throwbacks

and some creepy shots of his sister sleeping????

he really is a pretty guy though (who’s just a little too overprotective)

strike that manly pose!

they all look so not impressed

but he gets a sisterly hug from .. well .. his sister

SWITCHING SCENES TO KNEELING VIKTOR (he looks comfortable in this pose, wonder if he’s been kneeling like that some other times too??)

Yuuri looks so hot and dominant (kinda like a servant and his master, oh my) but seriously he’s making sure his laces are properly tied how cute and thoughtful???

“YOu’re my babe. Show what you got”

“I’ll make you proud, if not now then later in our shared hotel room”

then we get a hint that shit’s going down so fast

when you forget your responsibilities bc you wanna watch ice-skating live

Viktor being his cheerful self, but Yuuri doesn’t buy it and demands all his attention

“give me all your attention my love, I’ll perform only for you”

oh my yes you showed Russia all your fucking love for this man and oh my god nobody can tell me those two haven’T already been getting it on in bed at this point

the he showed us the most beautiful and fab performance ever, he was actually shining like a star, all about him screamed sex

*when you’re thinking bout what you gonna do to your boyfriend in bed tonight*bc he’s hot holy shit

he’s SO HOT

everybody is stunned (and probably thinks about what’s underneath that really tight suit)

you’re such a good boyfriend you’re cheering for your babe

giving the smog kitten some prep talk

seeing how hot the other Yuuri actually is and finally being intimidated by him, kinda (and get even more angry)

still cheering

that pose lmao

but that face, utter hotnesssss

cheering intensifies

blushing babe

and when you thought it couldn’t get any better

an angel appears

and that angel offends you but you don’t even care

you’re too overwhelmed by all that grace and beauty

like, really overwhelmed

and then you and your gay bf act like the proud parents that you are

the love in their eyes I can’t they’re so proud

some more prep talk by the most ignorant people ever (and where’s his grandpa??? I was so sorry for him)

anxiety hits him

meanwhile those two are celebrating

VIKTOR EVEN KISSES HIS BLADES lmao someones getting treated good at night for being so perf I swear

little Yurio just is fucking annoyed by all their PDA (maybe he has to listen to their sweet talk all the time lmao)

then they see him and get all fucking proud and happy

Yurio’S like the annoyed kid who’s getting embarrassed in front of his friends by his parents

kissy kissy make us proud we love you anyways

“oh MY GOD Dad that’S so embarrassing I’m not five years old anymore” he’s wild lmao, really looks like an angry kitty

parents have no clue why he’s so pissed off

then his performance starts and OH EM GE it was everything! He’s the most beautiful human being e-ver

that face he’s prettier than any of us

my kitten has to be protected

then he meets someone he hates even more than his parents

here I can see the tiger in him

their faces, I’m dyING

Yuuri is still first place and Viktor couldn’t be any more proud, just look at him watching his bf realize that he’s a sexy beast and in first place

now we get to see Jean-Jacques Leroy or as he likes to call himself King JJ

and to be hones he’s a fucking rock-star (literally??)

he loves himself a lot (kinda the kanye of ice-skating)

and is not afraid to show the junk in his trunk

like I said…. rock star

“JJ Style” is apparently a thing

I’m digging his lavender costume tbh

he loves himself so much that he makes out with himself in front of everyone

and this is his signature hand-move

SUDDENLY the fun’s over, apparently Makkachin is on the edge of dying and Minako is at the Vet with him (I was crying tbh)

Yuuri immediately thinks about how he wasn’t there when his beloved Vicchan died and then …

he tells Viktor to leave for Japan BECAUSE HE CARES MORE ABOUT HIS BOYFRIENDS FEELINGS THAN ABOUT WINNING (this gives me life) and eh doesn’t want his boyfriend to experience the same hurt and grief that he went through and all the ‘what ifs’ etc.

he cares so much

I think Viktor knows that too

then those people come along

why are my parents fighting?

Viktor is torn on the inside, he doesn’t know what to do

but then he gets an idea…

why not trust this heartless and emotionless men with taking care of his anxious and sometimes confidence lacking boyfriend????

he looks so desperate I can’t

and everyone is like: ?????????????

and then: cliffhanger

let’s all pray for Makkachin, and for Yurio that his grandpa will show up and for a meeting between JJ and Chris! *prays*

Consequences of Time Travel: Why Greg Weisman is a  Better Writer than Steven Moffat

Time travel stories are hard to write.  A lot of them have been done at this point, for one thing.  It’s kind of funny that something completely fictional has such well-known tropes. There are at least three different types of time travel in fiction.  Type A is that you can go back in time and make changes, and when you return the world will be different than when you left.  Type B is that history is set in stone, and if you go back in time you will simply fulfill a pre-existing role, also known as a stable time loop.  Type C is that when you go back in time, you create a new universe affected by your actions, but your home universe is unaffected (these are ordered based on the order in which I learned them growing up- once I assign letters or numbers to things, they stick that way in my head for life).  Back to the Future is firmly Type A.  That’s why I think the Chuck Berry scene is commonly misinterpreted.  Marty inspiring Johnny B. Goode is a Type B rule, which isn’t compatible with that universe.  I assume the other end of Marvin’s telephone call was Chuck saying “How the hell did that kid steal my song?”  Type C was used in Dragon Ball Z.  Type B was used in the first Terminator movie, though the sequels were extremely confused about their rules.  They were also used by one of my favorite shows of all time, Gargoyles.  Ninety percent of the time, I hate it when series that aren’t about time travel introduce time travel midway through. Sometimes it’s just an excuse to go different places that have nothing to do with the plot, like in Animorphs. The bigger problem is that time travel is too powerful and can overwhelm the story if it’s not restricted- certainly Harry Potter characters could do something more useful with time turners than help an overachiever take more classes.  Having them all destroyed in book 5 was overly convenient, but it was probably the only way to keep the plot going.

Gargoyles is one of the only series I know of that introduced time travel midway through and managed to integrate it well.  Partly this is because most of the trips in time were to places that were related to the characters’ backstories (the only exception was “M.I.A.,” where Goliath visited the Battle of Britain, and it was probably the weakest of the time travel stories).  Another reason is that Greg Weisman mandated very strict Type B rules. No one can go back and undo something that has already happened because it has already happened, and anytime a character goes back in time they simply act out what already happened.  They have agency in their actions, but the time stream already “knows” what choices they will make.  So there’s no going back and saving the dead from dying.  Or is there?  After all, in M.I.A. Griff was supposedly dead, yet Goliath saved him by grabbing him out of time and bringing him to the present.  Who’s to say they couldn’t do that again?

This is where Doctor Who comes in.  I’m not an old school DW fan.  I started watching with the Ninth Doctor and went forward. I’ve seen at least one story with each of the first four Doctors and listened to a Sixth Doctor audio drama, but I know more about the new series.  However, I eventually quit watching after Capaldi’s first season because I got sick to death of Steven Moffat’s writing.  One of his biggest flaws as a writer is that there are no permanent consequences for anything.  This is where a comparison to Gargoyles is revealing.  Gargoyles and the rebooted Doctor Who started in a very similar place.  Both the Doctor and the gargoyles were the survivors of a massacre and (apparently) the last of their species.  Both fought a wide variety of villains while trying to find new purpose in life.  And both dealt with survivors’ guilt. Christopher Eccleston put a lot of effort into making his Doctor a character haunted by PTSD and his own failure to save his people (from himself, it eventually was revealed), while Goliath and his clan were adrift and without purpose for a full season.  But they ultimately dealt with the tragedy in totally different ways.

The Time War was the brain child of Russell T. Davies, who rebirthed Doctor Who in 2005.  Had he stayed in charge, it’s hard to say where things would have ended up. However, the show was eventually taken over by Steven Moffat.  Moffat had done well writing a number of one-shot episodes, most notably “Blink.” I personally think the two-parter “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances” is better, but it’s hard to deny Blink’s impact.  It introduced the Weeeping Angels, for one, and it also was the first time Moffat wrote a stable time loop, or “Type B rules,” as I designated them above. Doctor Who is not a show with strict rules.  It basically is allowed to do whatever suits the episode.  The danger here is that it can be easy to avoid consequences for one’s actions, and the writers had to come up with reasons why the Doctor can’t save everyone.  Some writers use the rule that the Doctor can’t cross his own timeline.  Others used the idea of “fixed points in time” that cannot be altered no matter what.  Moffat, though, basically says anything goes as long as it seems clever.  This can work in small doses, like the time loop in Blink, but over time it’s been abused to the point where nothing that happens to the Doctor matters, because he can undo it.  People saw him die in season six, but The Doctor dodged that by replacing himself with a robot (I’m probably going to get some details of these examples wrong, forgive me).  The best example of the Doctor’s new omnipotence, though, is “The Day of the Doctor,” a.k.a. the fiftieth anniversary special.

Most people consider this a good episode, and I like it on its own (save for turning Queen Elizabeth into a dopey fangirl for The Doctor).  Like I said, Moffat is best in small doses.  However, when he writes over a long period of time the episodes start to contradict each other and tension tends to build up and then fizzle out.  The whole point of Day of the Doctor was to confront The Doctor’s actions in the Time War, where he’s forced to slaughter his own people to save the universe.  Moffat said he couldn’t imagine writing that scene, so he had The Doctor come up with a solution.  The solution was very silly- make Gallifrey disappear into a pocket dimension just as the daleks are firing on it and they’ll all hit each other.  It sounds like a Looney Tunes gag.  Then the War Doctor gets amnesia just as he’s regenerating, so the Ninth Doctor still thinks he killed everyone and still has to deal with his guilt.  It’s a perfect stable time loop, but it demonstrates how even with Type B rules time travel can be abused.  I had no problem with the idea that the Time Lords were still alive, or at least some of them.  But saying that none of them died means all of the sacrifice we saw before was for nothing. All of the Ninth Doctor’s angst was over a fake memory.  And from then on, nothing that happened, no matter how big, could be trusted to be real. Any consequences could be unwritten, and if there are no consequences for the characters’ actions then there’s no story, just a string of cool moments.  Sure, the Time Lords were still trapped in a pocket dimension, but only because the author said so.  There was nothing stopping him from bringing them all back, because there were no rules.  I would have liked to find some Time Lords who were off planet at the time and were trying to rebuild their society (The Master survived, for one), but saving the whole planet was cheap.  Similarly, the gargoyles did eventually find that other members of their species had survived.  However, there was never any chance of saving their own clan.  If Moffat had been writing, someone would have gone back in time to the morning of the Wyvern Massacre, replaced all of the stone gargoyles with identical statues, and brought them all back to the present. Suddenly Goliath has his family back! Hooray!  Except that would undercut the whole point of the show.

Greg Weisman said once that he wanted Gargoyles to be about repercussions, so he made the time travel rules so strict that they could never be used to circumvent repercussions.  The rules of time travel aren’t the point, though. The point is the agenda of the author. Moffat is actually less careless with the rules of time travel than some other writers, but he can still undo anything if it seems cool.  This is even true in his non-time traveling series, Sherlock, where the main character can jump off a tall building to his death in front of everyone and then just pop up alive later with no explanation.  Life is all about cause and effect, and all stories reflect that by being about how characters react to their circumstances.  Steven Moffat doesn’t care about cause and effect, and he doesn’t care about characters changing over time.  He cares about cool visuals and badass moments whether they fit the story or not.  Nothing is real because nothing can be counted on to stay true.  When anything can happen and no one’s actions have any consequences, that’s not even really a story anymore.  It’s just a mess.

anonymous asked:

what's your favorite p&p adaptation?

I can’t answer this because it’s too hard so instead I’m going to tell you why all of them are awesome and why you should watch them.

  • Ashanti. As herself.
  • THE COLORS AND THE CINEMATOGRAPHY !!!! OH GOD!!!!
  • The whole plane ride with Lalita and Darcy destroys my soul. Destroys it.

2005

  • Did some say sexual tension?
  • Like, oomph do these guys want to bad.
  • I need three bullet points just to talk about how much they want to bang
  • The hand flex???!!??! LORD HAVE MERCY ON MY SOUL THEY TOUCH HANDS AND I AM SINNING.
  • I really liked the way Kira Knightley played Lizzy getting slighted by Darcy at the beginning. She actually seems offended. Which you don’t always see in the other versions.
  • This movie is really cool because the director purposefully shot it so that the family looked like a real family and the viewer felt like they were kinda creepin’ on the Bennets. So it’s not composed, it’s like we’re always peering around corners or over shoulders.
  • Bingley is an actual golden retriever.
  • Also the cinematography!?!?!? like the scene where they’re both dancing and nobody else is in the room? That is gr9.
  • Rain!Darcy is the greatest Darcy. Darcy should always be wet.
  • Also his voice is deep. Like the bottom of the sea. But it sees into my soul.
  • Bingley practicing his proposal on DarcY????? BROMANCE that is some goooood shit.
  • The SOUNDTRACK lord sometimes I just listen to it over and over again. Sometimes @ananbeth will text me and be like “Rachel I’m listening to the P&P soundtrack” and I have to prepare myself for her tears. I cry.
  • The house where they film Pemberley is so gorgeous? This movie is so aesthetic?
  • Darcy’s smile when he’s laughing with Lizzy could make angels sing.
  • The American ending of this movie is the greatest thing to happen to this country since Betty White, who is older than sliced bread. Like, hoooolly crap, I don’t care that it isn’t period appropriate, I will watch it 20 times over until I shrivel up into a prune of tears.
  • And one last time, for the people in the back, SEXUAL TENSION.

1995 BBC

  • It’s basically the book. Like, the only difference is… well, you know. We’ll talk about later.
  • There’s so much boobs. There’s boobs everywhere. This movie is probably the reason I’m bisexual (I’m just kidding but seriously boobs.)
  • Colin. Firth. COLIN FIRTH. AS DARCY.
  • I just love the costumes, idk why, I love me an empire waist line.
  • Did I mention Colin Firth’s Darcy?
  • I really love the way Jennifer Ehle plays Lizzy’s spirit. I feel that she captures Lizzy’s spirit really beautifully; she really grabs onto her lust for life. Kira also does that, but Jennifer was my first Lizzy so she’ll always be Lizzy to me.
  • Colin Firth undresses and jumps into a lake in a white shirt.
  • COLIN FIRTH FENCING
  • Colin Firth in the bathtub
  • colin firth starring as grumpy cat.
  • Lydia is played probably closest to how the book intended her.
  • Idk why but Mr. Bennet is perfect, I love him, I am his and he is mine, he will parent me forever with lil tummy and his glasses.
  • Also this Mrs. Bennet is probs more accurate to book Mrs. Bennet but that kinda depends on how you read it.
  • THE SCENERY IS SO GORGEOUS
  • The “not at all, they were brightened by the exercise” scene is basically the reason I wake up in the morning. Darcy you have it so bad.
  • I love the way you kinda see Darcy’s transition… because you spend so much time in this universe and with the characters, Darcy’s transition goes really slowly but smoothly. It’s not too fast, it’s just perfect. I love it.
  • Meep

Bridget Jones’ Diary

  • Colin Firth’s triumphant return to grumpy cat.
  • Actual quote from Colin Firth upon returning to the set: “Surprise bitch. I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”
  • Bridget is all of us. She is literally a single, chubby, slightly alcoholic girl who loves Pride & Prejudice too much. Literally, there’s a bonus feature where she interviews Colin Firth about playing Mr. Darcy.
  • If you’re looking for Mr. Darcy hopping into bed with someone, watch Bridget Jones’ Diary. He says “I happen to like your wobbly bits” and that makes me happy.
  • Also I feel like you see his butt and that’s important because Mr. Darcy’s butt is very important for science.
  • The bunny scene? Mmmmmmm.
  • DARCY IN THE KITCHEN HE COOKS AND IT’S AMAZING
  • allll byyyy myyyseeellfff
  • “I like you just the way you are.”
  • Darcy and Wickham BITCH FIGHT it’s incredible and it’s raining men is playing in the background oh my god. I’m gonna go rewatch that scene right now goodbye friends.
