How to Make Quick and Easy Tattoo Sleeves

Got a cosplay idea but the character has lots of arm (or leg) tattoos? Don’t feel like painting on yourself with body paints or hunting down that horrendously expensive temporary tattoo paper? Here’s a quick tutorial for making tattoo sleeves using nylons and sharpie markers!

Upsides:

- Supplies are cheap! You may even have many or all the supplies you need right at home.

- Quick and not very messy! No paint is involved, and sharpie marker dries instantly.

- Easy! Great artistic skill not required.

- They move with your skin! People have legit thought these were real tattoos. From a distance, yes, but I had guys at cons with actual ink on their arms come over to compliment on my full (fake) sleeves.

- You get to eat pringles! More on that later.

Downsides:

- They are delicate. Nylons get holes in them super easy and forearms run into stuff, lean against things, and generally make it hard for the sleeves to survive. But if you only need them for a weekend, that’s ok.

- I haven’t experimented too much, but unfortunately this technique probably doesn’t work for wearers with darker skin tones. Sharpie ink is transparent, so any color it rests on just multiplies and the tattoo won’t show up very well. You’ll want to go the fabric paint or body paint route to get the best bold, bright tats.

- Can’t do white sections, because sharpie ink is transparent and doesn’t come in white. I leave them blank and they read OK, but the white areas will always be pink, tan, brown, etc. unless you dab in a little fabric paint, which will not be covered in this tutorial.

- Sharpie is supposed to be permanent marker, but on skin…it’s not. The ink will most likely wear off onto adjacent clothes. Not that big of a deal for me, as I tend to wear my tats with white shirts that can be bleached, but other shirts may not survive as well.

OK, let’s go! Here are your supplies:

You’ll need a pair of nylons, scissors, tape, a set of sharpies, your designs printed out on 8.5 x 11 paper, some bracelets, and a can of Pringles. You can use any design you want, of course, but Here is the link to these fine Newt Kaiju tattoo designs.

If your nylons have an undies part, cut the legs off and wear the undies on your head for the rest of the tutorial, if desired. Put the legs on your arm like so, and cut the toes off so you can slip your hand through. You can cut some of the top of the sleeve off as well, but don’t cut too much because you can’t put it back on if your sleeves are too short.

Here are my creepy sleeves. Now for the pringles.

Tape your design template to the Pringles can. It doesn’t reach all the way around but eh. The Pringles can gives you a nice stable surface to draw on that is roughly the shape and size of an arm. It’s a little short, so just roll up the rest of the nylon above the workspace and adjust both template and nylon down when you get to working on that part of the sleeve.

Color with the markers! I recommend doing the colored areas first and then doing the black outlines on top of it, to avoid the black ink contaminating the ink pads of the lighter markers. Remember how that always happens to the yellow ones? Eww. Nylons are thin and slide around a bit, so it’s best to use short strokes and dotting to get the ink on.

Take the template off the Pringles tube, flip the paper to the blank side and put it back on again. The paper collects the extra ink, so it’s hard to see any missed spots. Now you can see any bits you may have missed. Fill them in for completion. Also, the paper doesn’t manage to wrap all the way around the Pringles can, so now is the time to free-hand a bit of the design where the template doesn’t reach. For Newt tattoos, that’s the back of the arm.

When you’re all done coloring, put them on!

There’s a rough end to the tattoo right at the wrist, of course. Disguise where the sleeve ends and your skin begins with some pretty bracelets:

There we are, much better!

Now…you’re done! Have some Pringles!

BMC REVIVAL!!

ALRIGHT GUYS I JUST FINISHED THE SHOW AND OH. NY. GOD. IVE GOT STUFF TO SAY

(WARNING: THIS IS LONG AS HELL)

- the guy who played Jeremy had such a great voice, he pulled off the awkward vibe and executed the jokes so well

- michael. fucking. MELL. boy oh boy.

- SO GOOD

- his voice sounded EXCATLY like George Salazar,, he was adorable and amazing

- alright so before I continue talking about Michael mell (my love) lemme tell u about the audience

- lots of people were in michael cosplay and tbh? I was there for it like it looked so good

- and they were VERY vocal, I’ve been to many shows and I’ve never heard a louder audience

- I’m talking full on screaming

- anyway my point was that when Michael first went onstage the entire place BLEW UP

- the whole mall scene with Michael and Jeremy never happened, they just went straight to Payless

- also the beanbags didn’t drop out of the ceiling for two player game (mildly disapointing) but AAAA IT WAS SO GOOD

- in the beginning Michael stands behind Jeremy and like touches his hair and puts his head on his shoulder (!!)

- and during the “faaavwite personnn” part they’re both standing and michael cuddles into Jeremy’s chest, and Jeremy like playfully shoves him back and he goes falling down into the beanbags

- during the whole second part when they go “find the bad guys push them aside” they didn’t jump over all the chairs and stuff, the scene changed behind them but the stood at the front of the stage and did these karate moves and noises

- CUTE AS HELL

- the guy who played the squip was INSANLY GOOD

- michael in the bathroom. oh my god.

- you could physically see him shaking and starting to break down, by the end of the song he could barely get the words out because he was so upset oml

- the girl who played Christine was!!!!!!!!! amazing!!!!! she was so peppy and bubbly (I love play rehearsal was AMAZING), but you could still see that her character had a lot of depth

- when Michael makes an entrance at the end he came in from the audience up onto the stage and everyone just SHRIEKED

- AND RICH WAS SO HILARIOUS AND ADORABLE

- at the end he was talking in the lisp!!!

- and when he said “oh my god I’m TOTALLY bi” everyone started cheering, then when he said “so what about the headphones kid? Is he your boyfriend?” Michael walked into the room like half smiling and being all bashful and HAKDMWOE

- when Jeremy was onstage with Christine during the play Michael was on the side of the stage, everyone else was standing super still but he was shifting a lot and looked super antsy

- and the cast after was super nice!!!!! everyone took pictures with the fans and they were so grateful

I could write so much more about this buttt I’m probably being super annoying,,, but yeah it was SO GOOD,,, anyway there’s a q&a kinda thing on Sunday at the theater with some of the original cast (INCLDING GEORGE SALAZAR), so that’s a thing if ur interested!

soul-rin-natsu  asked:

Can you recommend any klance fics?.

I can definitely recommend lots of klance fics. As in, lots lots. I am not completely sure what you are looking for/what you have already read though, so I’m just gonna list some of my favorite authors with some of my favorite fics.

Quick additional info: there are no explicit fics on here, though some are rated mature. All of the stories have klance as their only ship but since I intended this to be author recs rather than fic recs, I will mention what kinds of other ships appear in other fics.

Now then, here you go, in no particular order:

manamune

- Crossroads (106k): not quite canon verse, not quite AU - check the summary

- Plunged (6k): canon verse, Lance teaches Keith how to swim

Roommates (6k): modern AU, Artist!Keith, Photographer!Lance, exactly what the title says

This author’s writing is amazingly smooth and I particularly enjoy their Keith. Crossroads was my favorite fic for a long, long time until I found some others that were just as good :D [this author also wrote some nsfw and sheith]

magisterpavus

- He Who Fights Monsters (65k): AU, there are dragons

This author has a style of writing that makes you forget that time exists. Like, you read their stories, look up 2 hours later and go “what the hell I only just started reading 5 minutes ago”. Their fics are pretty action-heavy but the romance part never falls short. [they wrote a lot of nsfw, their newest fic is shklance]

mackerelmademedoit

- Entangled (102k): canon verse, Keith and Lance get mind-melded

- Right-hand Man (4k): canon verse, Keith approaches Lance after the end of season 2 to talk about their roles from now on

Amazing characterizations here. I particularly enjoyed the OS because it seemed like something that genuinely could happen like this in canon… sadly I don’t think it will, but one can dream, right :’D Also amazing art! [they wrote some nsfw]

redburn

- it had to be you (9k): modern AU, Keith and Lance are professors, lots of flirting

- Echoes In Your Mind (7k): canon verse, Keith is turning Galra

- let the whole world know (4k): modern AU, soulmates AU

I honestly don’t know why I like this author so much? Probably because they can squeeze an entire story into less than 10k words, complete with character development and appearances from friends etc. I liked many more of their OS but there are just so many, you should check it out for yourself. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

varelsen

- Not That Bad (68k): modern AU, socially anxious!Keith, lots and lots of fluff

- just like that (10k): canon verse, Lance struggles with his crush on Keith

this author just? makes reading feel so good? so relaxing?? Their style is focused on conveying emotions and flows really nicely, I strongly recommend to give it a try. [their newest story is nsfw and includes lancelot]

battleshidge (Amiria_Raven)

- Drive Me Crazy (8k): modern AU, lots of flirting and stupid pick-up lines

- Next Level (33k; WIP): modern AU, online gaming, they know each other but they don’t know that they know each other

The style of writing is really, really good and I love how everyone’s friendships get portrayed. The author is also pretty good at writing conflicted emotions. [they wrote some shallura and shidge]

aknightley

- it’s all in my head (8k): canon verse, mind meld

This author is super good with emotions. You always end up feeling what the characters are feeling and I’d definitely recommend going through their other fics as well - once again, there are just so many that I won’t list them all. [they wrote some nsfw and shallura]

lemoninagin

- You Can Fog Up My Windows Anytime (3k): modern AU, all the awkward flirting

Another author that has a fantastic style of writing and portrays the characters really well. Also another author that wrote so many good things that I can’t possibly put them all on here. [they wrote some nsfw, sheith, shklance, shallura- lots of stuff, check the tags]

MilkTeaMiku

- Moonset Deep (50k, WIP): mermaid AU, lance is the mermaid

- The Quiet (40k, WIP): ghost AU, lance is the ghost

- 7 Days Series (pt 1 - 30k, pt 2 - 30k, pt 3 - 4k): canon verse, lance/keith get turned into babies

Amazing writing, plot-orientated. Don’t let that fool you though, the emotions never fall short. [they wrote some shallura, shance and other ships - also their fics aren’t rated. the ones listed are entirely sfw]

Zizzani

- Drive It Like You Mean It (94k): modern AU, street racing AU, it gets pretty intense later

This writer has a really fluent and nice style of writing and they somehow manage to easily let lots of characters interact. Everyone feels extremely in character and nothing feels forced. Also I know nothing about cars and yet their fics belong to my favorites, so give it a try. [they wrote some shallura]

shipstiel

- Of Don Juan And Elvis (3k): modern AU, soulmate AU

- Barbie Girl (2k): modern AU, soulmate AU, continuation

I’m not sure whether it’s just me but no matter what fic of them I read, they always feel– soft. Easy. Something good for in-between. One of their fics (not the ones listed here) has some pretty heavy topics in it and yet I still feel like that. [they wrote some shallura]

Gigapoodle

- A Moment in the Snow (3k): canon verse, Galra!Keith, snowball fights, fluff

- Carpe Diems and Chrysanthemums (14k): modern AU, hanahaki disease, trans Lance, angst with a happy ending

- A Quarter Past Midnight (14k): canon verse, trans Keith, angst with a happy ending

This author is amazing at writing angst. It just always hits you right in the feels. Like damn. I adore their writing so much but ho boy I was too scared to click the one Chara Death fic they wrote. I couldn’t do that to myself, the two longer OS that I listed here already gave me enough feelings. [they wrote some shallura]

Trashness

- Nightmares (15k): canon verse, sleeping together, as in snuggling, fluff

- Costumed Identities (42k): modern AU, cosplay AU, they know each other but they don’t know they know each other

This author writes Keith’s and Lance’s interactions really nicely. They also never fail to make me smile/laugh with their fics, they are all really cute!! Lots of light heartened stuff here.

SKayLanphear

- Running Flat (11k): canon verse, thought sharing, lance is trying to figure out who has the crush on him

- A Commutal Contract (24k, WIP): canon verse, bed sharing

I really really really enjoy this author’s Lance!! He feels incredibly in character and I swear I can see him act in canon just like he does in the fics. Their style of writing is fluent, nice and adapts really well to the situation.

[I also really enjoy witty_name’s and freshia’s fics, both of whom usually put background shallura into their fics though so I couldn’t list them here]

Aaaand that’s it for now! :D If you have a specific length/specific topics/specific ratings in mind for what you want to read, feel free to send another message!! You can also visit the fic rec tag on my blog, maybe you’ll find something else there.

/EDIT: now there is a part two with some other of my favorite fics

With all the uproar over the all-female Wonder Woman showings in Texas this past week, I want to point something out to all the people out there who think it’s stupid or don’t understand the point.

There is a large problem with sexism in so-called “nerd culture,” especially among the fans. I had to explain this to a male friend of mine the other day because he knew it happened, but he didn’t know to what extent.

I take part in nerd culture and I see it every day, and I’ve even dealt with it myself a couple of times. It’s hard to be a woman involved in nerd culture and be taken seriously. I have seen other women be accused of being a “fake fan,” a girl who’s only pretending to be interested in things like comic books or Star Trek or D&D because they want to impress boys. I have seen women’s opinions and thoughts on topics ignored or disregarded by men because they believe these women have no idea what they’re talking about. Not to mention within the content itself: video games and books where men are the heroes, and women are always the damsels in distress. In comic books, women are drawn to be extremely sexualized, costumes barely covering their bodies, and their bodies are drawn to be extremely unrealistically thin, yet curvy and top-heavy. Remember when all those people were throwing a fit over Ghostbusters being remade into a movie with female leads? Did you really think the only reason people were mad about it was that they were remaking it? Think again. (And don’t even get me started on Big Bang Theory.)

I, myself, am involved in nerd culture. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I am heavily invested in Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Comics. I go to conventions, I cosplay, I take part in discussion boards and forums, I write/read fanfiction, I buy comic books, I do RPs and RPGs, and I have a Tumblr dedicated to Marvel and Iron Man. But I cannot tell you the number of times my authenticity as a fan has been put into question because I am a woman.

I once walked into a comic book store to buy the new issue of Invincible Iron Man, and while I was perusing through the old comics, a man came up to me and started asking me if I was lost, or if I was waiting for my boyfriend. Then, when I said I was there for myself, told me that I must be confused, and the beauty salon was actually two doors down. I have been accused of only being interested in the MCU because the “actor dudes who play them are hot.” I have had my opinions on comics disregarded by men in my own family because I am a girl, and girls “aren’t into that kind of stuff.” In anonymous RPGs, I am always, without fail, assumed to be a man by other players until I state otherwise. I have even been accused of only showing interest in superheroes because I wanted to impress a guy. (Yes – I have spent probably hundreds of dollars on movie tickets, comics, and merchandise, I take part in RPGs, I spend countless hours talking to people on Tumblr about character analysis of the MCU vs. different Marvel Comics universes and plot analysis, spend hours running my blog for my followers and my own entertainment, writing fanfiction and participating in writing events, I’ve read hundreds of fanfics online, spent a couple hundred dollars to make a homemade Black Widow costume to wear to Rhode Island Comic Con where I proceeded to spend another $200 to get a photo with and an autograph from STAN LEE on the off chance that I will one day meet a boy who is impressed by all of these things. Of course, I must have forgotten.)

Not to mention, I don’t look like the stereotype of a “nerd girl,” so I am often not taken seriously by men within fandom for that as well (that stereotype is complete bullshit anyway). And I’m not even as heavily involved in this stuff as some women are! I have seen and met women who eat, sleep, and breathe this kind of stuff! Star Wars, Stark Trek, D&D, LotR, anime, video games, comic books, whatever it may be. I’ve seen other women get treated a lot more poorly than I have simply because of the things they like! And because of what? Gender roles? Stupid societal expectations?

So yes, I understand why a movie theater in Texas is offering women-only showings of Wonder Women. Women are very much underrepresented in the superhero genre, particularly in movies. Wonder Woman is the first female-led superhero movie since Hallie Berry’s Catwoman in 2005, and that movie was given so much shit by critics and fans. Marvel has never released a single female lead movie, and won’t until 2019.

The women only showings show women that they can be powerful and save the world. It empowers little girls and shows us that we are more than just a plaything for a man to rescue or wait around for them to save the day. And it shows women within this so-called “nerd culture” that they are important too. Their presence matters, their opinions matter, and their validity as fans matter just as much as anyone else.

Hell, if some theaters wanted to do an African American only showing of Marvel’s Black Panther when it comes out, go for it. People of color are just as, if not more, marginalized and erased from nerd culture than women are. With Marvel blaming low comic book sales on “diversity,” they’re continuous whitewashing of characters and erasure of ethnic backgrounds, and the erasure/disregard for POC characters by the fandom within fanon. I can only think of two or three popular superhero movies that have come out in the last 20 years with a POC lead.

It’s not like the theater is denying you the right to see the movie, you just won’t be allowed into that specific theater room showing it. Hell, 99% of the people complaining about it don’t live in Texas or anywhere near that theater.

Basically what I’m saying is, stop throwing a bitch fit over dumb shit, go watch a different showing of the same movie that’s being offered five minutes later, and stop trying to deny women their right and their place within fandom as more than just casual participants.

Idk where this came from but here it is. I guess this is what happens after days of not drawing anything.

Surpreme gay otp award goes to SanUso because this is the longest I’ve ever been majorly and deeply attached to a pairing. Usually after a year or so, I get a little bored…move on maybe if something else grabs my attention. But no, here I am in my otp clan. Otp clan here we stand.

Examples of Dead Fandoms, Part Two

Go here to read part one.

Let me reiterate something I said before: I actually don’t want to be right about any of these fandoms being dead. It always makes me sad when people lose passion for something, and something worthwhile goes unread or unseen.

The Pulp Heroes (the Shadow, Doc Savage, etc.)

The Shadow was the first and most famous of the larger than life magazine heroes, mostly published by Street & Smith, who came out during the Great Depression. They weren’t superheroes, exactly…but they were too uncanny, too bigger than life, their adventures too bizarre and fantastical, to be typical adventurers or detective heroes in the usual sense…they were in the same ballpark as Tarzan or Zorro, a kind of “transitional fossil” between grounded detective and adventure characters, and the later far out superheroes.

I realized the reach these novels had in their own time when I heard this amazing story about none other than jazz great Thelonious Monk: he was obsessed with Doc Savage magazine. When he performed, the jazz man sometimes had a Doc Savage magazine rolled up in his coat. I have a hard time imagining that!

The reason the pulp heroes went away and stopped having pop cultural cache is simple: the audience for it went away. You have to remember that pulp hero stories were always a composite genre, meant to appeal to two audiences simultaneously: kids, who loved action and fantasy and heroism, and working class men, who also love action, but who also loved lurid mystery and gore. To appeal to working class men, there were always way more hints of blood, gunplay, dread/terror, and sex, but because kids also read these, it was all very subdued. If you realize that pulp heroes were meant to appeal to these two very different audiences with conflicting desires, the question isn’t why the pulp heroes went away, but rather, why they lasted as long as they did.

What took the kid audience away from the hero pulps could be summarized in two words: superhero comics. Sales on pulps fell every year when they had to compete with comics, and the history of the pulp heroes in the 1940s is defined by their reaction to the challenge of comics, a little like the history of movies when they had to compete with television.

There were three big reactions to comics in the 1940s from the pulp magazines:

  1. They dissed comics. This reminds me of the 50s movies that called television “the idiot’s lantern.” The best example of this I can find is the Doc Savage mystery, The Whisker of Hercules. By all accounts, Doc Savage author Lester Dent hated, hated, hated comic superheroes, particularly Superman, who exaggerated the traits of his own heroes beyond what he felt an audience would believe. Whisker of Hercules is a novel where Doc finds criminals who who take a potion that turns them into Superman, gives them superstrength, the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and the ability to move at superspeed, but in the end, they are ultimately bested by Doc Savage, who outsmarts them and reveals the Whisker of Hercules ages them to death. Lester Dent, you see, felt superhero comics were a passing fad without staying power.
  2. They created characters that were both in pulp magazines and in comics as well. An example of this would be Ka-Zar and Sheena, who was in both comics and pulp magazines simultaneously. Today, we’d call them “multimedia properties.”
  3. They created far-out pulp heroes that were aimed at a kid audience to lure kids back to magazines. The best example of this is Edmond Hamilton’s Captain Future, which was a pulp hero who was extremely kid-friendly, with robot sidekicks and a cute mouse pet, and a base on the Moon.

While the kids who read pulp heroes were lured away by comics, the working class men were pulled away by a new invention: the “men’s adventure” paperback novel, which could have explicit sex and violence. James Bond (Casino Royale was first published in 1954) was more typical of the paperback heroes, as was gun-toting Mack Bolan the Executioner, a special forces guy who came back from Vietnam to find his family killed by the mafia, and who declares war on the mob with his special forces training and arsenal of firearms (he also directly inspired a certain Marvel Comics character you might be familiar with).

Just like almost all pop music is either Beatles or Stones inspired, nearly all men’s adventure heroes are some variation of either James Bond or Mack Bolan. This leads us to today, where men’s adventure novels are either porn, or gun porn. If you’ve read this blog long enough, you can probably guess which one I like better.

Here’s another thing to consider when wondering why the pulp heroes went away. The Shadow, Doc Savage, the Spider, are really only a few years older than the superheroes. They were not separated by a geologic age, the way many histories lead you to believe: they came out in the same decade as each other. Doc Savage came out in 1933, and Superman came out in 1938, which is not really that much time difference at all. The difference may be that there is a publishing company (DC Comics) that views Superman and Batman as essential to their identity and that keeps them alive for that reason, whereas no company does that for the pulp characters. In fact, there was even some dispute early this century as to whether the Street & Smith characters fell into the public domain.

Original Battlestar Galactica

I used to post old cosplay pics, and my gosh, were there ever a lot of OBSG images. The actor who played Boomer was a regular at early science fiction conventions (there was a time when it was considered unusual for celebrities to visit conventions), and when a new BSG show was announced in 2003 (believe it or not, there was once a time that a hard reboot of an old scifi property was rare), it led to one of the all-time biggest nerdrages in nerd history.

I hesitate to say this, but part of the reason that Star Trek and the Next Generation are discovered decades later by new fans is because they really are good shows, and OBSG is…well, it’s a challenge for a new person, with fresh eyes, to see just what got everyone so excited in 1978. The reason why BSG was a big deal is clear: most people who are fans of it are fans because they watched the show when they were children, so it’s imprinted in their minds (rather like 90s kids and “Saved by the Bell” or “Power Rangers”). OSBG fandom isn’t growing for the same reason that “Saved by the Bell” fans aren’t growing: it’s a product of hormones and nostalgia, you “had to be there” to get it.

To me, this explains perfectly why people went ballistic when a BSG reboot was announced back in the stone age, 2002. For one, the concept of a reboot was so new that I remember I heard people wonder if this means their favorite characters from the original were dead now. More importantly, though, this is a fandom with a few core people who remember BSG from when they were kids, and therefore have strong feelings about why it works and doesn’t work.

Prince Valiant

Here’s a test to determine if a fandom is dead: if a movie adaptation royally screws everything about it up, would people get angry and yelly and passionate? Remember how people got death threats over the M. Knight Shyamalan Last Airbender? Well, in the case of Prince Valiant, I don’t think anybody would actually care. This is surprising, because for years, when people thought of comics, they thought of Prince Valiant: he was emblematic of an entire medium. Years before the prestige of Maus, Persepolis, and the “graphic novel,” it was the one comic that was classy, that adults were alright reading.

Why is it no longer popular? Well, copy and paste everything I said on Dick Tracy about newspaper comics here. But also, if you ever run into someone who really loved Prince Valiant back in the day, ask them why they liked it. The answer should be incredibly telling. Most likely, they’ll tell you they loved the beautiful art, that they loved the great style of Hal Foster’s godlike pen. They loved the sweep of the story and the epic feel.

Here’s what they won’t say if you ask them: they probably won’t say they liked the characters. (I can’t think of one adjective to describe Prince Valiant’s personality - he totally fails the RedLetterMedia test). They won’t remember any moment that made them cry or made them feel a rush of triumph.

I swear, it is not my intention to be a hater and drink some haterade. That’s really not in my nature, because I am a positive person. The whole point of this blog is for me to share cool old stuff I love - negativity has no place here. But there’s a dishonesty, a willful obtuseness, in trying to understand why Prince Valiant stopped being a phenomenon, and not realizing that Prince Valiant is beautiful looking, but it doesn’t give us the things about stories that “stick to our ribs” and make it stand the test of time: great characters and memorable, earned moments. Praising a comic for having beautiful art is like praising a movie for the great special effects. You don’t want the one thing people to remember about your hero to be a haircut.

John Carter of Mars

The fandom for John Carter of Mars is a little like Barsoom itself without the Atmosphere Factory and water pumped from the depths of Omean: dead.

To the modern eye, one of the weirdest parts of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos series is the 3 minute digression in the episode on Mars where Sagan starts talking about how he was the hugest John Carter of Mars fanboy ever, and how he dreamed of rescuing beautiful women in gallant swordfights on thoatback, with his fanboy narration intercut with shots of Frazetta and Michael Whelan cover art. This really happened. And this was typical of the kind of passion that John Carter of Mars inspired that you don’t see much of today. It’s so easy to blame the tanking of the movie adaptation, but the movie failing was a symptom, not a cause, of the fact there was no hungry audience to receive it.

Sagan was a huge John Carter fan: his car had a “BARSOOM” vanity license plate, and he wasn’t alone: without hesitation, I would say that Edgar Rice Burroughs was the most important and influential scifi writer of the first few decades of the 20th Century, so important that everyone defined themselves as either Burroughs-like (Leigh Brackett, for instance) or rejected the tropes ERB created (see: Stanley G. Weinbaum). John Carter of Mars didn’t inspire Star Wars. Instead, he inspired the things that inspired Star Wars (e.g. Flash Gordon). Edgar Rice Burroughs, not Faulkner, not Hemmingway, was the best selling novelist of the 1920s.

Remember the last time I did this, and I was sincerely baffled why the Tripods novels have not had a revival? Well, when I got to John Carter of Mars, the answer came to me: the reason is that this work was so influential, so ubiquitous, that it has been strip-mined of creative power by imitators to the point that very little about it seems original anymore. Tripods, if it came out now, would just look like a Hunger Games rip-off despite the fact that if anything, it’s the other way around. The problem with John Carter of Mars is exactly the same: remember how the response to the trailer to the film adaptation was that this was Avatar Goes to Attack of the Clones? When, actually, Avatar and others got a lot from the Barsoom books. In other words, because John Carter was influential enough to create cliches, paradoxically, it is now seen as cliche.

Highlander

The Ghostbusters reboot had a big, big problem: it’s a remake of a movie that’s an untouchable classic, like Back to the Future. Any remake would inevitably be compared to the original and suffer in the comparison. Well, here’s one movie you could probably remake with a gender swap hero: Highlander. It’s not Back to the Future, Jaws, or Terminator; this isn’t a movie people can quote every line from. People know of Highlander, sure…people know things like the Queen song, “there can be only one,” electric swordfighting, etc, but people don’t actually care that much. People won’t go ballistic. Highlander is a remaker’s dream: it has enough name recognition to get sold and made, but it doesn’t have a legion of nitpicking nerd fans to second guess everything and treat the original like gospel.

Highlander used to be kind of a big deal: it had not one but two tv shows, and it had three movie sequels. Just like “Wild Wild West” was steampunk a couple decades before that term existed, Highlander was “urban fantasy” before that term existed. Because of the themes of urban fantasy and tragic romance, it always had a strong female fandom, and there’s no understanding Highlander without understanding that it was kind of the Supernatural of its day: theoretically, with its swordfighting and cool powers, it was trying to appeal to boys…but ended up building up a way bigger female audience instead.

Posterity is really never kind to any fantasy property who’s audience is primarily women. Who, today, talks a lot about Gargoyles or Beauty and the Beast, for example, to pick two properties that used to have a strong fandom? The last one (B&B) is pretty amazing because it was created by two people immensely relevant to the zeitgeist of today: Ron Perlman (the Beast himself), and the show’s head writer and producer, a fellow by the name of George R.R. Martin. It could be just plain chauvinism over a “girl thing.” I don’t deny that plays a role, more likely, it could just be that scifi fans are immensely nerdy in a way fantasy fans aren’t, so they keep alive their favorite scifi artifacts. That, I think, is why we’re still talking about Terminator and not Highlander: Tolkien fans who write in Dwarf runes are a freakish exception. In general, fantasy fans are way less hardcore than scifi fans.

Magnus, Robot Fighter

Ever talk to any old gay nerds? They will usually tell you they realized they were hella gay because of three men: Robert Conrad in “Wild Wild West,” Ultra Boy from Legion of Super-Heroes, and Magnus, Robot Fighter.

Russ Manning’s Magnus, Robot Fighter may be one of the great subterranean sources of pop culture. Matt Groening admits that the aesthetics of this comic inspired a lot of Futurama. Magnus, Robot Fighter was such a nostalgia totem in the minds of the Baby Boom generation, on the level of the Mars Attacks! cards, that George Lucas, who was always very hands-off with supplementary material, personally requested Russ Manning come out of retirement to do the Star Wars daily comics.

Magnus, Robot Fighter is an interesting example of how comics only have cache and longevity long-term if they can successfully convert into other media formats. Comics are important, but comics are ephemeral. Superman is the king of comic characters, sure, but most people know about him because he made the leap from comics to radio, screen, and television.

Magnus is all the more heartbreaking because he almost made the jump to a medium with durability - video games. Under circumstances too complex to relate here, Acclaim bought out all the Gold Key comic characters, and Magnus was generally considered to be the crown jewel of the lot. Because Magnus was too important an IP to screw up, and the development team was so inexperienced, Acclaim instead decided to make their first Gold Key game adaptation one of the minor guys, so if they blew it, no biggie: Turok, Dinosaur Hunter. The rest is history: Acclaim was so busy making sequels to the surprise hit Turok, Dinosaur Hunter they never got around to giving Magnus, Robot Fighter a game.

Part three is coming, so stay tuned. Believe it or not, I actually have a fandom from the past ten years on here! Can you think of any dead fandoms?

ARC contest (+ a new teaser)

It’s been wildly busy, in the best possible way, and I hope to have some really exciting news soon. I don’t yet. But I hope soon. But for now:

My publisher sent me four ARCs of The Becoming of Noah Shaw. This is exciting and scary—it’s been five years since I’ve had ARCs for a book, and three years between the ending of Mara’s origin story and the beginning of Noah’s…hero journey, let’s call it. If you’ve stuck with my characters for the length of three books, I can’t thank you enough. I wouldn’t be here without you, and I’ve been thinking for months about ways I can thank you for that. I’m still working that out—I owe you all a monumental debt, and figuring out how to repay it isn’t easy. But there is one small thing I can do first, right now, which is to try and make your wait for The Becoming of Noah Shaw a bit shorter.

Since this is a series that I wrote as much for fans of the Mara Dyer trilogy as I did for myself, I decided against giving ARCs away randomly—I want to make sure they go to readers who are as excited about reading the book early as I am about sharing it. If that’s you, here’s what you’ve got to do:

Make something. Create. I’ve got four ARCs to give away, so it seems right that there should be four ways to win it:

1) Make MADNESS art. Draw something inspired by Mara. By Noah. By Jamie or Daniel or anyone or anything in the series. Paint something, sculpt something, draw a cartoon, a comic, graphic design (edits count!), typography–photography counts too! I love bookstagram and the staging of book-related photos, so it would be splendid to see entries like that. You can also do multiples (like comic panels, or anything considered part of one series), to count as one entry.

2) Write something series-inspired. A poem, a short little story (500 words, max), an excerpt of your fanfic; something set in the Dyerverse. (Keep it rated PG-13 to a soft R, though, because my baby brother is probably going to end up judging some of the entries and…awkward).

3) Film something. A fanvid, a trailer, a short film, movie, or even just a video of yourself talking about the books, Booktube-styles. Making videos is hard, but that probably means there will be a less crowded field!

4) Rando! Make a dress out of the pages of one of the books (someone did that once and it was super rad). Make a fannish thingie (creating headers, Tumblr themes, fan mixes, fan sites and communities) get your cosplay on, make some jewellery, show off your fresh MADNESS-related tattoo—really, anything goes (except nudity. Not that).

Here’s how you enter:

You post your entry or a link to your entry via the ‘submit post’ option on Tumblr, or the Ask option, or, if it’s an image or a video, you can post the link to such in the Ask box or, if you feel so inspired, on Twitter. My goal is to honour your hard work by retweeting/reblogging what you send, and then that way, everyone will be able to appreciate your stuff. Just be sure to let me know which category you’re entering in, and don’t post your email address or address-address—I won’t need it unless you win, and since there is SUCH TALENT in this fandom, there will be first/second/third place winners. First place is the signed ARC; second is a signed chapter sampler with the first three chapters (and a handpicked teaser from me); third place is secret snippet of a secret thing that I won’t be sending to anyone but you.

The contest will end on 8/21 and the judging will take place that week, so about two and a half months before the book comes out. If you enter, consider that an agreement not to post spoilers if you win. “KJJGBLJSBGTR^&%E$RDT” and “WTAF????!!!!” posts are cool, though.

Also: this contest IS international. Anyone can enter. And since entries will be posted publicly, and I very much want this to be a fan-led endeavour, likes, shares, RTs, comments and such will be one factor (not the only factor) in judging. I love pretty much every MD thing I see, so it feels fairer to let fans have a say in the winners to make sure I’m not paralysed by indecision.

One super last thing, for real: the ARCs are uncorrected proofs. So uncorrected that there is in fact a chapter missing, which had to be supplemented at the very last minute. I also changed a lot—like, a LOT—between the time the draft was submitted and when it went to magical ARC printing place. This is all to say: if you don’t win one, don’t worry—the final version is the version I meant for everyone to read.

Also, here’s a new snippet/teaser under the jump.

AWM 2017 recap

Things I saw at AWM today plus some bonus content I was informed of by other attendees of the event (roughly in chronological order):

Cinderella Girls

- I know next to nothing about this series except that Rin and Uzuki and that Love Laika duo are popular yuri ships lol.

- I already forgot their setlist OTL sorry I’d probably remember if I listened to some of their songs again. I think they performed 5? STAR, GOIN…uh…

- They pretty much spoke Japanese the entire time and were impressed that the audience seemed to be following along well despite that.

- They did a live skit or something? They showed clips from the anime(?) for each character and had them read a script live. Was pretty cute.

- Lit songs of the set list: YES PARTY TIME (is…is that the right title lol I just remember screaming those words a lot), and of course their closing song Onegai Cinderella.

My Calgary Expo Experience

Okay guys so I’m still kind of dying. Today (probably yesterday by the time this goes up) was kind of amazing and I can’t believe that I met Bob Morley BUT I’M GOING TO ATTEMPT TO SHARE THE AWESOMENESS WITH YOU ALL.

Apparently recap posts about cons are a thing and I still can’t believe that I actually have reason to write one!!

I only decided to go on the Sunday because I could fit in the photo op, autograph signing, and panel all in one day so I felt that it was a good option, so I don’t know much about anything that happened on any of the other days.

It was sooo incredible. Bob is just … wow.

He just has the most adorable personality. And we all probably know this because you don’t need to meet him to be able to tell but he really does. As my friend who was with me likes to say, he’s all “soft and squish” hahahaha.

I was so so so nervous when we first walked into the autograph line (which was not very long at all because we came on the last day, and we also came early) and we were, like, two feet away from him because the line looped around. It was so weird. I still can’t believe that I was that close to him, let alone actually TALKED to him, and TOUCHED him.

Also I’m about 99% sure that I saw Robyn from the Afictionados podcast in the line ahead of me because she has a very distinctive voice and I heard her mention Unity Days but I was too shy to talk to her and I wasn’t 100% it was her until later but anyway SHOUTOUT TO ROBYN IF YOU’RE READING THIS WHICH YOU PROBABLY AREN’T BUT IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT YOU ARE JUST KNOW THAT I REALLY LIKE YOUR PODCAST AND I’M REALLY AWKWARD SO I DIDN’T TELL YOU IN PERSON

anyway ..

Bob is just amazing because he was out in front of his table instead of behind it like basically all the other guests. It was really neat, he’s very interactive with the fans and likes to be very personal with everyone. He shook everyone’s hand that came to get an autograph and introduced himself (AS IF I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE) and asked how we were doing and he was just so polite and cute and ugghh. I’ve never been to a con before but my friend was telling me how usually the autograph signing is very quick and they get you in and out of there very fast but Bob was so sweet and generous and took his time with everyone, actually attempting to have a real conversation with the fans.

The people before us were taking a video of him which is prohibited apparently and the security guy there was getting mad at them but Bob was like “oh, I don’t mind …” and he looked kind of uncomfortable (about the security guy, not the fans).

He shaved his beard the night before and my friend was hEARTBROKEN because she LOVED it, haha. I think he looks nice either way, but I kind of prefer him cleanshaven so I was happy. HE PLAYS WITH HIS HAIR SO MUCH. And I swear that boy has an entire closet dedicated just to his various hats, its like every time I saw him he was wearing a different one.

My friend was a little starstruck so I ended up doing a lot of the conversation, but honestly I barely processed most of what he was saying. I mentioned that Zach talked about filming a movie with him at a recent con and asked him if he could share a little bit about it. He laughed and said that he was surprised Zach had said anything because they were supposed to be secretive about it so he didn’t really say anything more than what I already knew. He talked about how he was going to be filming in Malaysia pretty soon (which I already knew cause i’m extra lol) and how he hadn’t spent a whole lot of time prepping for the role so he needed to do some of that beforehand. It was fine that he couldn’t say much about it though because I was mostly just trying to keep the conversation going so I didn’t spontaneously combust and/or faint in his arms … you know, the usual.

My friend was dressed up as Season 2 Octavia (with the warpaint) and I had a really crappy cosplay of Season 1 Clarke going on hahahaha. Basically I couldn’t find a jacket (and i have no idea how to make one) so I just had like the shirt and the watch and the hair and stuff so it wasn’t anything special. Most people probably thought I wasn’t dressed up at all. When I walked up to Bob he went “WOW that’s a big watch” cause my wrists are really tiny I guess haha. I don’t really know if he knew if I was Clarke or not.

He started both of our autographs with “Dearest [name]” instead of just “Dear” or writing only our names, which I thought was adorable. It’s such a Bob thing to do - or at least something I would expect from him. He also put two x’s at the end.

I didn’t end up getting anything special signed because I couldn’t think of anything super creative, so I just chose one of their prints instead. They were nice though.

When he saw my friend’s print that she’d chosen he went “wow I was so tan” and I kind of laughed because he’s still really tan and his skin is so nice haha, but meanwhile I’m white as hell and can’t tan for the life of me

Then we both took photos with him. I always see people talking about Bob smelling really nice and I was like “okay” because I don’t tend to talk about how people smell BUT HE ACTUALLY DOES OKAY. lol I know that seems weird, I don’t know how to describe the smell but its a thing, guys, all right?

Afterwards we looked around a bit at the convention and waited to head to Bob’s panel at 12:00. I ran into a few friends who I haven’t seen in awhile which was kind of nice. It was super packed. There were a lot more people who showed up to see Bob than I was expecting, but it was nice to see so many people coming together. :) The panel was 45 minutes but it went by soooooooo fast. The moderator kept asking Bob to expand on his questions basically, which ended up eating up a lot of time so I didn’t get to ask the question about Jasper and Bellamy that I wanted to, which was kind of disappointing.

I was being so extra though, waving my hand in the hair and everything, trying to get her attention. I made eye contact with Bob because he saw me but then the woman picked someone else and it was really sad lol. I raised my hand EVERY SINGLE TIME. But I was ignored.

*sigh*

NEXT TIME.

They were really strict about there being no videos so I couldn’t really get any, which is unfortunate, and I wasn’t close enough to get very good quality photos so I won’t post any of them here. If you have any questions about some things people are spreading about the panel or want confirmation about some stuff Bob said, just hit me up and I’ll hopefully clear some things for you because I know that the truth often gets skewed a little at conventions. Its like the fandom is playing a little game of telephone, except online.

Bob is soooo cute and endearing and funny, so I really enjoyed the panel. I know a lot of people have been posting about stuff that Bob but I’ll point out the stuff I remember anyway

  • Someone asked Bob was his favourite episode/scene was and Bob said that his favourite episode is yet to air, and that it really delves into Bellamy’s “psyche”, which he liked, so I’m super excited to see that. I do wonder if he’s referring to 4x10, actually, since the promo seems pretty Bellamy heavy and it’s written by Aaron who tends to write Bellamy pretty well, I think. We’ll see!
  • There’s a video of the Bellarke question going around which, to be perfectly honest, isn’t much different from anything else that he’s said. He apparently ~ doesn’t know ~ if they’ll go the romantic path but he believes that they have a very “special relationship” that is deeper than any romance. It’s not in the video that I’ve seen going around but he also said that Bellamy and Clarke have a certain understanding and honesty which he believes is definitely a good place to start to build a relationship on, if they were planning on going that route.
  • He said something that I really haven’t seen talked about at all, but both I and my friend thought was a little odd when we heard it. I think the question was asking what scenes with Bellamy were most difficult or something like that but he said “the romantic side I find very hard to play”, which I thought was kind of interesting because Bellamy hasn’t really had any romantic partners besides Gina very very briefly. Idk if that’s who he was referring to? *side eyes emoji* Take it with a grain of salt in any case.
  • Bob joked about how Bellamy gets beat up so often because he’s “been told that [Bob] sells hits really well” lol. He also said that he maybe takes punches a little too well because when Octavia was beating him up in 3x10 he got too into it and accidentally fell through the wall of the set and broke it.
  • The moderator pointed out that it’s remarkable how well some characters have recovered from being impaled and he made a cheeky little comment about how “it’s science guys!” because we all know just how accurate the science on this show is hahaha
  • Someone asked Bob how he and Bellamy are similar and he responded by saying that he was loyal to his family and that the similarities “start and finish there”. He talked about how Bellamy is so much more aggressive than he is and how he wouldn’t go around killing people. The moderator then asked him if he thought he would ever be capable of doing something like that and Bob went “NOOOOOOOO! I don’t have that in me, its ACTING!”. He sounded so offended, it was really funny, especially since Bob is so cute and pure so it just sounded bizarre when she asked that.
  • Apparently during the scene where Pike sentences Kane to death Mike Beach and Henry Ian Cusick had a solid 15 minute argument about whose side Bellamy should be on and Bob just decided to leave the room after awhile. Bob was just like “okay I’m just going to walk out and you two can decide which one of you is my dad”.
  • Bob enjoys doing fight scenes “because its always kind of exciting to feel like you’re tough, even though you’re not” (he laughed after he said that) and he also enjoyed doing the Bellamy speeches because he thought that they felt cool and kind of empowering to feel like you have the power to actually influence someone else, since there aren’t many opportunities for that in real life.
  • Since he likes fight scenes, he joked about how he always would ask “can’t I at least try and put up a fight”  and he also said that Bellamy tends to take more beatings than he gives now because Bellamy feels like he deserves to be beaten up for what he’s done.
  • In the scene where he found out that Octavia “died” apparently Bob went full out and was banging his head against the bars and actually got a cut all along his forehead because he was so into it.
  • He was asked if it ever hurt his vocal cords to talk so low in Bellamy’s voice and he joked that it’s painful when he has to scream all the time at such a low octave. He also talked about why Bellamy’s voice was so low, because he was really hungover when they shot the Pilot and when he saw the video he went back and was really surprised and he just kind of had to roll with it from there on out. I’ve heard that story before but it was cool to hear Bob talk about it in person.
  • I know we all love to talk about the drastic difference in pitch between Bellamy and Bob’s voice but I’m telling you that its something else to hear it in person instead of just in a video. The change is SO dramatic.
  • One time when Bellamy had to do a big speech in Season 1, Bob had a really bad cold and he couldn’t speak properly so he was kind of screeching and messing up and he said it was really “embarassing” and so frustrating that he actually started to cry. The whole crowd went “aWWWWWwwwWWWWW” when he said that and he was like “yeah, yeah, I know, I know” all bashful and it was really cute.
  • He talked about how he would rather be judged for his “content” versus his physique and he said “maybe its not even me to feel that way” which made me sad, and then he said that he now recognizes that being judged for his appearance comes with the job sometimes.
  • Bob says that he likes polarizing the audience but that some people on social media can’t seem to separate him from Bellamy and he joked about all these people who meet him and are just like “I hate your character but, you know, you’re okay” and I was honestly like WHO DO I HAVE TO FIGHT COME AT ME
  • If he could bring back anyone he said he would bring back Pike and someone yelled “WHYYYY????” and Bob talked about how he caused lots of chaos and whatnot which was interesting, to which the mod was like “they already have enough chaos” and then Bob responded with “what’s wrong with a little chaos?” and I died. nOT like that’s one of the most iconic lines of Season 1 or anything ..
  • He also said he thought bringing Finn back would be interesting because “his moral compass is very different from Clarke and Bellamy’s”
  • When he was a kid he wanted to be a stuntman and he would bite into ceramic plates because he thought that’s what they did, lol. Bob just went, “SO stupid” after he described it haha
  • I CAN’T BELIEVE I FORGOT. He joked a ton about his hair and how the apocalypse is great for the characters’ hair. He talked about how the hair team is great and how Bellamy has “great hair game” in Season 4, but that all seems to change after Bob finishes filming and he doesn’t really do anything with it. He’s very self-deprecating
  • Bob says that when he struggles in getting into Bellamy’s headspace a lot of the time he just starts thinking about lunch because that’s what Mike Beach told him to do, hahahahaha. He also talked about how there’s “a lot of stupid stuff” going around in Bellamy’s head a lot of the time.
  • He said that he likes to do rock climbing, but a lot of the time he just ends up playing video games instead.
  • He finds Octavia and Bellamy’s storyline together this season “heartbreaking”.
  • He says his scenes with Eliza are “always really great” because they’re very “emotional” and he gets to cry lol
  • Apparently Bob is like one of two people who actually knows how to drive the rover because its stick shift and its “impossible”.
  • One girl that was picked said “sorry” and Bob was like “what are you apologizing for?” and the moderator was like “it’s the Canadian way” or something along those lines but the girl was just like “cause I’m so awkward” and the whole time i was thinking girl SAME i feel you
  • Bob says playing Bellamy has changed his real voice. He thinks his voice has “dropped down because of it” even when he’s not playing Bellamy.
  • Bob said that one of his friends tried to get him to compete in a smashbrothers competition and he went but he said it was really intense so he was like “no, no, no, I’m going to stay home and be the king of my own house”
  • Bob doesn’t like sitting behind the table when signing autographs because he “feels weird” about it and enjoys interacting with fans because he feels that social media is really “devoid of connection” and he’s “just a normal person” like the rest of us, which was sweet. <3
  • Bob says that “I’m very loving but I’m very pragmatic” when referring to Bellamy (not himself)
  • Bob loves Bellamy soo much and he is super protective of him (like us!). He says that when people don’t like Bellamy sometimes he’s just like “oh well let’s talk about this, maybe I can talk you around” but it doesn’t usually work haha
  • He said that he went to a play in Australia because William Mcinnes, who he really loves, was in it but he didn’t know what it was about and it turned out be about IVF treatment lol and he was like “yeah that was kinda weird […] maybe I should have read the plot first …”

After the panel we looked around at all the merchandise but there was barely anything for The 100, which wasn’t all that surprising. I honestly didn’t expect to find anything, but we stumbled completely by accident onto this jewelry stand and we saw one necklace for The 100 and started freaking out because we couldn’t find any The 100 merch ANYWHERE and the lady heard us and told us that she sold stuff at Unity Days so she’d designed an entire jewelry line for The 100 and showed us her collection.

It was so awesome. She makes all these neat little themed charm bracelets for all shows, so there was one for Lost, and OUAT and Supernatural and all that, which was nice but she had a whole COLLECTION for The 100, with themed bracelets for almost all the individual characters. I remember seeing something similar online, maybe even the same ones, and had told my friend earlier that I thought they were cool.

I DEFINITELY wasn’t expecting to actually find them.

My friend bought the Bellamy one and I bought the Raven one, because I personally thought that the Raven one was more true to the character than the other one (but they were both really cute!). I’m not one for fandom merch so it was kind of exciting for me to buy something.

Here’s a pic of my Raven bracelet:

And here’s my friends Bellamy bracelet:

Later we went to go get our photo ops with Bob, which we did individually. It was very fast-paced so we didn’t get to spend much time with him or anything but I was actually surprisingly relaxed and calm the second time I saw him? Idk he’s just so humble and down-to-earth and he really makes you feel comfortable around him, so I wasn’t nearly as nervous as I was earlier.

When he saw my friend and I he was just like “hello again” and I thought it was cute that he remembered us, after meeting hundreds of individual people!

I just took a regular photo with him, no special poses or anything, because I felt weird asking for anything different. But to be honest I wish that I asked him for a hug, because I saw a girl go before us who did and her photo ended up looking REALLY good and now I’m super jealous, dammit.

NEXT TIME.

(I feel like I’m making a lot of promises to myself in this post, hmmmmmm)

Anyways, after we got the photo he turned to me and said “thank you!” and I was just thinking WHY ARE YOU THANKING ME??? YOU JUST MADE MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE, THANK YOU!

So that was my experience seeing Bob. I’m so far from over it and just looking at the pictures makes me feel all light and happy. He’s such a great person and you can tell that he’s not just putting an act or a show for the benefit of his fans, he’s truly genuine!

Now I know what people mean when they talk about how after they meet some of the cast, they just want to do it again the next day. I’ve got the con fever, I want to go to another one so bad (but of course I’m infinitely grateful that I got to see him in person at all, because it was such an incredible experience)! Bob is so sweet and adorable and KIND (like I’ve reiterated half a million times) and deserves everything amazing in the world, I don’t know make the rules, k?

And there’s just something so … amazing about cons. No one there is judging you, everyone there is a shameless nerd as well, haha, and its such a safe space for fans to go and meet celebrities, guests, and each other. Whenever my friend and I saw anyone wearing The 100 merch or cosplaying as someone from The 100, we always got so excited. Because there are ACTUAL REAL PHYSICAL people in front of us who are just as obsessed as we are, and you don’t get that connection through TV. Everyone is so friendly and accepting, complimenting each other’s costumes and whatnot. The community is just amazing

Here’s hoping that I get to experience this again, and that any of you who haven’t yet get to as well! Everyone deserves to go to a con and have as much fun as I did. :)

Not sure if I’m going to post my photos with him because I’m really weird about posting photos of myself on the internet. I guess I’m just paranoid that someone I know will stumble across it, or my fandom days will come back to haunt me in twenty years or so and someone will pull up my photograph and my account with my dramatic ass screaming about Bellarke and Bellamy Blake and all that and judge me for the rest of my life. We’ll see. Maybe BFSN??

I’ll consider it. ;)

anonymous asked:

Do you guys ever feel the "am I getting too old for cosplay" kind of thing? Being in the mid 20's range, more and more I see people my age dropping the hobby and just going to cons in casual clothes and sometimes I feel too old for everything that happens at cons. I'm not a frequent cosplayer either and only attend 2-3 cons at most a year (AN and whatever I can plan for, Canadian here) but any tips or advice for that stage in the hobby?

The average age of the Dangerous Ladies is 29.5 so… we feel you.

Here’s the thing:

By your mid-twenties, odds are you are settling into a career or have a better idea of what you’re doing with your life. You don’t have the free time of being in school (in the sense that a lot of people in school are spending as much time doing fandom stuff as they are studying) and while you may have a lot more disposable incoming virtue working full-time, you probably also have a lot more responsibilities and bills to pay. Your career may not allow an obvious public profile, especially not with some of the more salacious costume designs.

And you’re getting older physically, too. Suddenly characters that seemed worldly and mature to you as a teenager are now years younger than you. Every other anime has a cast of fourteen year olds, and the older characters are almost all grizzled old men. (Thank fuck for Overwatch, LawBreakers and other games with older ensemble casts!) Like many others, your body is probably changing; personally, I’ve never been happier with my body, but I also find myself pickier in what I adorn it with.

And oh my god, keeping up with the teenagers and early-twenties at this age? I can’t change costume three times in one day, or have multiple new costumes for every convention, or impulse buy pre-made costumes. (When on earth would I even wear them, I wonder?) I just got off a multi-week crunch that culminated in a 82 hour work week, I don’t have the energy for a quick change.

And OH, god, the EXPERIENCE. If you’re thinking you’re getting old, you’ve probably been around for enough years to have developed some skills. You know what you’re capable of and how far you’ve come and want to go farther –– whipping out a shoddy costume sometimes isn’t enough anymore, you want to make something to the best of your ability. You know your stuff so your standards are higher, which slows you down even MORE.

Lots of people seem to see this change in lifestyle as an incompatibility with cosplay and drop out. Others struggle with having to cosplay differently –– maybe they don’t WANT to slow down even if the rest of their life (and potentially their body) is telling them it’s time. This is an age when you generally have to shift priorities around to make it work, and if you don’t want to change, dropping out seems better at times.

I feel we already let go of the madhouse, rapid-fire costume sprees years ago, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been growing pains. It’s been harder to get projects done as our responsibilities stack up in our personal lives. We’ve all felt read thin in some ways over the past few years, but we adapt!

So here are some tips:

  1. Use your years of experience to do fewer but more detailed pieces.
  2. See conventions as a time to spend with friends, not a time to be on the floor in something incredible at all times. I love balancing casual time with big costume time because it means I can spend quality time with friends in something comfortable and easy.
  3. Explore what cosplay actually means to you, and focus on that part.
  4. Assess what it means that people still want to spend time together. If people are going to conventions in regular outfits without cosplay just to hang out and see each other, then it means people in this community are forming friendships as people, not just because of a shared hobby. That matters!
  5. Revitalize conventions for yourself by not going to crappy cons anymore. In Anime North’s case, I think lots of people drop out because Anime North is fucking stagnant. It’s easy to feel old when you’ve been going to a convention for ten years and nothing has changed and it’s not enjoyable anymore but you only go out of habit. Switch it up. Travel. Go to other conventions that do things a little differently; going to another place makes it feel fresh.
  6. Be friendly with the younger folk. It makes me feel like a grandma sometimes, but spending time with people who are young and enthusiastic and still going hard can be kind of refreshing. They’re filled with infectious energy.
  7. When you hear someone aged 20 or 21 complaining about feeling too old for cosplay, have a good belly laugh and keep on doing your thing.
  8. Relearn tailoring for your own body. It’ll keep you on your toes and it’s good practice 👍

Miraculous Ladybug Fanfiction writers I have sewing info to help you!!!

Miraculous ladybug fanfiction writers!!!! Hello! I absolutely LOVE reading fanfic for this show, I honestly have read 10x more fanfic than I have watched the show, I just love the characters and the wonderful stories you all create! One reason i love the show is because i am a fellow fashion designer student and I thought I would make a post to help out you wonderful writers who want some more fashion terminology or insight or whatever! Also if I say something wrong or if any other people want to add feel free to add and correct me I just want to contribute to this wonderful adorable fandom, I have only written one fanfiction before (danny phantom) and writing is super hard and i just wanna give some insight about being a design student!

- poking yourself with pins very true, happens all the frickin time, I have bled on things i’ve been making and have mini heart attacks

- college AU’s spending hours in the sewing lab and getting pizza and eating off of the pattern paper before a huge project is due

- MOOD BOARDS!! making a board and using hella photoshop and illustrator, putting pictures to make a board of what inspires the outfit/line of clothing you are making

- creating flat patterns on illustrator is something we have to do, it has the details of the sewing and stuff you gotta do

- I have read your saliva gets out your own blood so i literally started licking a light pink skirt i was making to get out the blood, which i didn’t even realize I was bleeding until the red splotch appeared

- I personally however have not cut myself with scissors while cutting fabric, you usually are laying a pattern on the material and will not have a hand close enough to the scissors to cut yourself, now Marinette is clumsy so if she tripped and fell and hit her scissors it that could happen but her cutting herself with scissors while cutting material is not something I have personally encountered

- when I make pattern for things i sit at my sewing table staring at a piece of paper trying to work out the math for different measurements, like how many inches do i need to make 10 pleats into a 26 inch waist skirt? how long of a hem do I need?

- before I went to college I would use wrapping paper for pattern paper when making my own patterns

- instead of using the word “mannequin” for what she is working on maybe use “dress form” both can work but this is just a me thing? idk

- another form of design is draping fabric directly onto the dress form and using pins to figure out the design you want

- forgetting you shoved a pencil in your bun and your parents looking at you funny, it happens

- spending WAY TOO FUCKING LONG in the fabric store, time moves differently there, you just stare and it can be really irritating to find the exact fabric you want to match the image in your head

- sewing for a few hours and forgetting to eat

- finding threads literally ALL OVER YOUR OUTFIT, if i don’t have at least 3 different threads on me did i really do anything?

- threads covering the floor bc you just throw them when you cut them

- dropping a sewing needle and doing a wide eye stare until you can locate the very slim sliver of metal before you stab your foot bc you should wear shoes but you don’t, (I have stabbed my foot with the non-sharp side of a needle, not fun)

- seam ripping, sewing one thing realizing you did it wrong and sitting there with a seam ripper for 10-20 minutes undoing what you did

- machine malfunctions: the bobbin (bottom thread) not matching up with the top thread and the stitches look all loopy on one side and you want to fucking throw your machine out the gosh darn window

- ironing fabric

- spending hours just pinning and minimal actual sewing, so many pins

- it has been X amount of days since stabbed with a pin (probably 0)

- everyone asking hey i need a button/hem/shoe/shirt fixed can you do it?(yes, i fixed the threading for a shoe some guy on my floor asked, honestly i did so much they knew me as the girl to go to if you needed something fixed sewing wise or anything arts and crafts related)

- also cosplays just today I was asked if i could make a shirt for my friend’s mom’s friend’s daughter

- i once drove to the fabric store to pick up more fabric and thought i don’t need to bring a swatch i know what color it is, it was ever ever so slightly off and i would have hated it so i had to drive back return it and get the right one (yes i brought a swatch that time)

- the smallest details bugging you: some stitches look a little wavy, the thread got tangled a little on the hand stitching, snipping the fabric a little too close to the seam, it’s the small things no one else sees that kills you

- cutting out fabric wrong and just getting frustrated and taking a deep breath, buying more and doing it right

- sitting down to work one day on a project, fucking up once, and just saying “nope, nope, i’m not even, i’m done for the day” , or after a long day and making a mistake and being like ok that’s enough i’ll fix it tomorrow

- almost knocking over the dressform and seeing your life flash before your eyes bc those are like upwards of $100

- SOMETHING REALLY CUTE: Last year i fixed two buttons and a sleeve of a shirt for this guy on my floor and i later learned he ripped off the buttons just so i could sew them back on and he could see me and talk to me (it was adorable but we didn’t work as a couple but still friends) but i figure maybe some chat or adrian would do bc he I had no idea i was just like how is this skinny boy popping buttons off his shorts??? (idk why but if you use this could you credit me? It’s a personal thing kinda and I also I just wanna know so i can read it and be like omg so cute)

- also one of my friends sometimes comes over and sits on the couch and we just talk and she watches me as I sew, its very nice and i feel like alya would totally sit and be on the Ladyblog and her and Marinette would just chat while she sews

I could probably think of a billion more but that’s all for now, if anyone has any questions or wants help or anything please let me know! I love sewing and miraculous ladybug but most of all is the beautiful stories you all create <3

(also if this does help you or you use stuff from this please lmk i would love to read your stories!)

anonymous asked:

OK so I'm going to rtx austin this summer but as someone who has never been, what should I expect? What should I go see? Help?! Lol

Sure! Here is a quick post of what you’ll need for RTX:

Packing

  • Comfortable Shoes- You will be walking…a lot!!
  • A Backpack- To carry your swag safely, nothing you can carry all day.
  • Clothes- Not optional

Water - You’ll be walking, you’ll be in the sun, you’ll get thirsty. Please for the love of god have water

  • Snacks- Bring snacks for food during the day. You’ll be waiting in lines for a few hours and it always help to talk to other on a not-as-empty stomach. Bring food you’ll thank me.
  • Sunscreen- If you burn easily come prepared! There is a shit ton of sun in Austin, and if you’re like most of us and don’t go outside a lot you will burn.
  • Entertainment- Card games, movies, that copy of your friend’s Strangerhood DVD that you stole, whatever for you to survive those long lines and hotel nights. 3DS or any sort of portable game system works too but remember chargers for those. Don’t count on the wifi to bail you out!
  • Money- Convention stuff is expensive so if you wanna go home with something bring cash. There will be exclusive merch at the con and if you want to get it, make sure you have the cash for it. Also budget Fasten fares, food, city attractions, and emergency money just in case.
  • A signing pen- You never know who you’ll run into on the floor and should be ready with the pen or the selfie because they don’t have a lot of time.

HOTELS

  • If you’re sure you’re going, book your hotel NOW. Waiting last minute and unsure of how everything was going to work out will bite you in the ass later. The hotel deals are on the RTX Website so save yourself some money and get on it.
  • Most hotels have free cancellations within 3 days of the booked date so don’t worry about having to back out.
  • Don’t cheap yourself out! If you’re not planning on getting a rental car get somewhere in walking distance. If you’re planning on paying for cab rides the whole time just pay the extra for a closer, nicer, hotel. If you’re booking farther away, have extra cash on your for a pick up or a Fasten

Transportation

  • Once again cab fares are ridiculous, fortunately a lot of things are in walking distance of the convention center. Especially eating places. If you’re trying to really site see or go far our I suggest using Fasten, I did last year and it worked out really well.
  • Check to see if your hotel offers a complimentary shuttle ride from the airport if you are flying into Austin.

FOOD

  • 6th Street will be busy, so make sure you plan accordingly for eating. Lots of people both visiting and living in Austin go there so places will be packed
  • It’s everywhere in downtown Austin
  • There seems to be something for everybody
  • Plan your money accordingly, some is affordable, some isn’t, check the local restaurants on Google Maps or Yelp before you go

Convention Tips/Etiquette

  • YOU WILL BE IN LINES FOREVER. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. I was in lines for probably the majority of the convention haha. Please heed my warnings, pick 3 things spaced throughout the day to see. It is actually impossible for you to see every panel or to go to every signing. Find something to entertain you like a fully charged tablet, or friends, and be ready to camp out about an hour before your panel, or two or three hours for the larger panels like the Achievement Hunter panels.
  • DO NOT FORM LINES IF THE GUARDIANS SAID A PANEL LINE HAS NOT STARTED. I can not tell you enough how man times we had groups of people huddling around doors. If the Guardians tell you to not line up, THEN DON’T.
  • If you are worried about lines, follow @RTXLines
  • Treat the Guardians with a little respect (Or a lot if you can handle it). Talk to them or give them a quick thank you while you’re waiting forever in those long lines. They’re sacrificing a lot of their experience to make yours better.
  • If you’re going to get up the mic during a panel, we don’t care what your story is, or who couldn’t make it, DONT ASK FOR SHOUTOUTS DURING A PANEL. There is only so much time during a panel, and as much as the staff loves you guys, it will get annoying and take up time for them to shout out every person
  • That being said, we all understand talking in front of hundreds of people is nerve racking. If you stutter, or are at a loss for words it’s not the end of the world, we’re not all public speaking champs. Just rehearse your question until you get to the mic and take your time asking the question.
  • If you’ve never been to a convention before… SOME PEOPLE ARE WEIRD! You’ll learn that out real quick. Just because people are a little overzealous or socially awkward does not mean you should judge them, we’re all fans coming together to celebrate something we love.

Cosplay Tips!

  • Have an emergency cosplay kit! Sewing needles, fabric tape, glue, anything you need to fix up a cosplay. You never know when you or another cosplay buddy might need it.
  • IF YOU BRING A PROP, MAKE SURE TO RUN IT BY SECURITY FIRST. We had issues last year where some RvB cosplayers brought guns as props, but they covered the orange tips and had to remove them from the con. There is going to be a cosplay table where security will inspect your prop and tell you if it’s ok or not to have. Please make sure you go there and check in your prop
  • Don’t be too in character. Pretending to be Ruby or Jaune is fine, but when it comes down to having to follow Guardian instructions or being respectful during a panel please just act casual. We had issues last year on this too for the RWBY panel and had to ask a few to leave because they were not being respectful.

MAKING FRIENDS

  • You’re not the ultimate Rooster Teeth fan. And if I wrong and you actually are, don’t act like it. We’re all here for the same reason, let’s talk about the things we love like equals.
  • Talk to people! I know some of us are socially shy or awkward, but most people at this event won’t judge you. If your not talking to somebody those lines can get old real quick.
  • Stranger Danger is still a thing. Make sure you know how to talk to strangers, be careful, unless you’re an adult then you got this.
  • Please treat women and men Cosplaying with respect. Just because they’re representing a character does not mean they want their material felt, or that you are owed a picture with them.

If anyone else has tips they would like to offer, feel free to add them to this post!

You loved Gabriel dearly, but something felt off. He wasn’t from your world, and it showed. Maybe in the way energy seemed to radiate off of him, maybe it was something else that you couldn’t quite put your finger on.

Either way, Gabriel just escaped the devil himself. You half expected a Mark Pellegrino clone to show up at your door, and that one wouldn’t be signing autographs.

But nobody came. About a week passed and it seemed that the world, the Supernatural world, truly believed Gabriel was dead.

Reggie Mantle x Reader: Finding a Date.

A/N: Warning, this fic is garbage. Read with caution bc I swear I need help. *Reader is best friends with Cheryl Blossom and good friends with Ethel Muggs… and literally everyone. You’re a fan of Overwatch and a low-key cosplayer, bruh. (I’m sorry, it’s a Halloween party might as well) ((Using she/her pronouns mostly bc I suck at writing, I just wanted to give Reggie more love and I failed)) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Y/N, you’re going to come to my Halloween party whether you like it or not. I’m not having one of my River Vixens mope and become a homebody.” Mentally screaming, I sighed and joined Cheryl as she stretched before the other girls came for practice. Cheryl Blossom’s been my best friend since we were kids. “Rich Kid Squad”, but I didn’t like hanging out with those other preppy shits. Jason and Cheryl were the only exception… They had my back and I had theirs in ways they never knew they needed. Since her twin brother’s death, I’ve done my best to help her cope. I guess my way of helping her is just being there and… joining the River Vixens.

“I already am, Cheryl, you know already that parties aren’t my kind of thing.” I replied, stretching my arms until I heard a satisfying pop from my elbow. Cheryl visibly cringed at the sound and continued to scold me like I was her child.

“Oh, please Y/N. You’re going and it’s final.”
She snapped at me and led me to the bleachers and sat down, patting the spot next to her.

“If you insist.” I sighed dejectedly. ‘My loot boxes will have to wait then… Daddy will have to wait,’ I thought to myself and tried to think of better days to lock myself in my room and level up on Overwatch with Reaper as my main.

“I know you’re thinking about your video games again, so I’ll make you a deal,” I stopped moping and stared at her, beckoning her to continue her sudden proposal because knowing Cheryl there’s always a catch.

“You can bring your video games and set up in the main hall,” I was about to scream. ‘Is she for real? Oh my gosh and she has a good wifi connection, a night without lagging! Huzzah!’

“But!” She interjected my notion. ‘Fuck my life, I knew it was too good to be true.’

“You have to dress up.” I scoffed and stood up straight. “You’re kidding, right? That’s it?”

“Yeah, why?” ‘That’s too easy, cosplaying is easy as pie Miss Cheryl. What’s really going on?’

“Cheryl, I know you. What’s the catch?”

“Okay fine, you have to bring a date and wear matching costumes.”

“Cheryl Blossom, you know I can’t talk to guys! What am I going to do? I’ve never been on a date, why are you doing this? Oh my God… I’m going to throw up.” I held my stomach, butterflies fluttering inside of me at the thought of asking a guy out.

“Y/N, calm down it’s not a big deal-”

“Uh, Cheryl yes. It IS a huuuuge deal! You know I hate talking to guys!”

“But, you talk to so many on that stupid video game chat whatever it is?”

“That’s different, they can’t see me.”

“Y/N. Listen up, you’re going to ask someone to the party and wear matching costumes. I’ll make sure to have the flat screen and your favorite snacks ready for you when you come, okay?”

“Fine… I’ll do it.”

“Good. And you don’t even have to hang out with him the whole night.”

“Well, that defeats the purpose of even having a date, but okay…”, tossing the conversation aside as the girls came into the gym, ready for cheerleading practice and more of Cheryl’s drama.

“Yup. Alright ladies, line up. We have to perfect this routine by tonight and if it’s not, we’ll be staying late so let’s get going.”

_____

“Who do I even ask? I don’t even talk to any guys other than Archie, Kevin and Jughead. Archie’s going with Betty, Veronica asked Kevin and I highly doubt that Jughead would want to go to a party for Halloween, he’ll probably be working on his novel.” I ranted to Ethel Muggs, she’s my study partner for Chemistry and Statistics. Ethel laughed and quickly copied my notes from a day she missed when she was sick. We were in the library and it was just us two and the librarian and she didn’t mind us chatting away, we were her assistants so we were in the clear.

“I don’t know. At least you were invited.” I froze at that thought. ‘Dang it, I should’ve been more considerate. It’s Ethel, why am I so stupid? …Wait.’

“You wanna be my date?!” I blurted out. Her eyes widened and she shook her head no.

“No no no no Y/N, I am good as done. I don’t want to be anywhere near those dumb jocks.”

I sighed and nodded my head in understanding, she’s had it rough the past year and I should’ve known better.

“This is gonna suck so badly. I just wanted to spend the night with Daddy and-” Ethel cut my rant short.

“Daddy? Who’s that?” I froze. Did I really say Daddy out loud? In front of Ethel?

“Um… He’s no one, forget I said anything.” Flustered, I tried changing the subject. I felt the heat creep up my neck. ‘Damn my abilities to blush, it’s not cute!!’

“Y/N, I don’t know. Sounds interesting and kinky, if you ask me. Spill the beans, Y/N/N.” Her grin teasing me whilst she shuffled her papers around into a neat pile.

“Oh my gosh! Okay, he’s a character from this game I’m playing, it’s called Overwatch.”

“Wow… Didn’t expect a rich and preppy cheerleader like you to be the gamer chick type, I’m a bit surprised but not really because I saw those books in your bag. If I’m correct, those are called ‘manga’, right?” I blushed heavily and covered my face.

“I am not preppy! I’m a disgusting nerd. Don’t look at me.” Ethel laughs and starts packing her stuff.

“Well, thanks for the notes and I hope you find someone to take because God forbid you get on Cheryl’s bad side for not bringing a date.” I shook my head lightly as I chuckled, “Yeah, it’s no problem Ethel. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She smiled and walked out of the library, leaving me alone with Mrs. Walker.

“You mind closing up today, Y/N?” She asked and tossed me the keys. I smiled and nodded yes to her.

“Yes, no worries Mrs. Walker. I’ll just study for a few more minutes before I go.”

“Thank you, sweetie. Have a nice day and good luck finding someone for the party.” She shuffled her way out the double doors and left me alone. Me and the books.

I stared down at my neat stack of chem worksheets and statistics notebooks and let out a deep sigh. 'I shouldn’t be stressing over something so small… Wait, did I pack my pepper spray?’

Ever since Jason’s death, my parents insisted that I carry a can of pepper spray. They even went as far as buying five bottles for me, wrapped with the instructions.

A thud broke me from my thoughts and I looked around. 'I'm… the only one in here, right?’

Reaching into my bag, I searched my bag for the small spray can. “Aw dang nabbit.” Opting for a No. 2 pencil, I rose from the desk and made my way towards where the sound came from.

“Hello?” I called out. 'Wow, am I dumb? I’m that stupid dumb bitch that gets killed in every horror movie that goes towards the danger.’

I heard another thud and a small scuffle, I stood behind a bookshelf holding the pencil firmly in my hand against my chest. 'Lord, please help me now.’

The scuffling grew louder and sounded like it was getting closer to me.

“AAAAHHHH!!!” I shouted, swinging my arm everywhich way prepared to stab whatever was there.

“OH SHIT! WAIT, STOP!” A firm grip caught my wrist and in a panic, I clenched my eyes shut and swung my leg at my assailant and kicked them, I don’t even know where.

“Ow… shit, you kick hard.” Realizing whose voice it was, I opened my eyes and yanked my arm away from him. 'Neighbor boy?’

Out of all the guys in Riverdale, I hadn’t thought of HIM to ask. 'It’s not like we talk so?’

“Reginald, what the heck are you doing in here? The library is closed.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A/N: this is pretty much trash lmao but im turning it into a two or three-shot idk but yeah… it’s not good so I’M SORRY GUYS 😭
@toosicktoocare : Could you do like a boyf friends first con together one? I’m going to a an anime con and i think it would be cool!
Can I??? I think I can. Especially for you Ki.
-they were planning this shit for weeks. It was the perfect scenario really. A game con and an anime con? Right next to each other?? On the same day? They prayed to nerd god the night they found out
-they honestly had maps of both cons and were planning it out on Jeremy’s wall, where they’d go first and a path and the best time to go where and when they’d con jump.
-Michael isn’t a HUGE anime fan but he does like it, so he wore a goku shirt ironically because he’s one of those kids who are all “it’s too mainstream yknow”
-Michael, looking down at his shirt: I fit in now.
-Jeremy fucking decked out his cardigan with pins that he bought at pretty much any place they sold them. Michael had to start purposefully leading him away from them.
-any time Jeremy saw a pin with the bi flag it was over, it was bought. He has characters he doesn’t even know.
-they bought a little death note book and the first thing Michael did was grab it and write “SQUIP” in it.
-honestly they were really nervous to go. Michael hates crowds and he knows cons can get really bad. He almost chickened out.
-Jeremy took him to all the places with less crowd like a good boyf
Heyo, its ya girl, stars anon, back at it again with the daily request. How would the RFA + Saeran + V react to MC being an actress / voiceactress in their favorite show / movie / video game? Thanks for the good work!! Oh just a heads up, tomorrows request is gonna be a bit angsty (i lied its gonna be v angsty, lolol) ! Anyways, I hope you have a good day / night !! Stay safe and be positive !! -Stars Anon <33
Stars Anon~ it’s always nice to see you in my inbox(✿◠‿◠) as always, i love your requests and you!!!
Thank you for always stopping by! you always make me feel so appreciated ahh have a good night / day too! and i’ll get myself ready for angst, thanks for warning me <333
all that was in my drafts from last night but here we go!
zen
  • when mc first came over, he knew they looked familiar
  • but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it
  • which was fine, he was still so happy to have them over
  • but when they left and he was getting ready for bed, it hit him
  • wait. that was his favorite actress for the lead role in his favorite musical
  • and he is shook. wait wait wait, that was mc????
  • he had been dreaming of getting a role in that musical one day
  • with someone who could do half the justice mc gave that role
  • and he met them. and he didn’t realize it until now
  • tries to keep his fanboying lowkey, but loses it when they sing
  • they ask to sing the duet with him
  • zen just about faints
  • but they sound so good together!!
yoosung
  • yoosung recognized mc’s voice, but barely
  • it’s over the phone, so maybe they just sound like someone else
  • he really doesn’t notice until he got bored one day and decided to log onto LOLOL, for old times sake
  • he goes through those random voice clips they give sometimes
  • and he gets on to this one character and plays a few
  • that one character sounds familiar…
  • “hey yoosung!” mc says, “look what I got from the store. it was a total score!”
  • that was conveniently what that character just said and they sounded the same
  • “wAIT MC REALLY?”  “..yeah? they were on sale..?”
  • “no i didn’t know you were a voice actor on LOLOL!
  • oh yeah, that was A Thing they did
  • yoosung always asks them to say stuff and they let him meet his favorite character’s voice actor
  • a total score, indeed
jaehee
  • jaehee was really into this movie
  • zen had a small role, but she was really into it for this one actor
  • like,,,, holy shit
  • noticed right away when she met mc
  • tried to keep her fangirl down, but had to ask…just to be sure
  • mc confirmed and she squealed just a little
  • mc finds it adorable
  • they’re also a little embarrassed when they watch that movie, but they get back at jaehee for it by whispering some lines to her
  • jaehee gets really blushy when that happens
  • it’s adorable
  • sometimes jaehee continues the line and then they end up acting out the whole movie
jumin
  • its rare that jumin is really interested in something
  • but he does have a guilty pleasure - which is this one soap opera
  • he met mc, and recognized her
  • asked right away, but showed no signs of fanboying
  • :((
  • mc confirmed and he complimented them on their work
  • however. jumin does fanboy a little
  • he just shows it in different ways
  • meaning: he totally reenacts scenes with them
  • it’s amazing, really
  • mc really likes when that happens because it shows that he’s really interested
  • reruns were playing once and they found jumin crying at this one episode
  • “honey! what episode is that-”
  • “the one where your character gets hurt..”
  • what an angel
707 / luciel / saeyoung
  • this boy knew
  • and had no shame in fanboying
  • thought he was out of their league
  • but also played along
  • “if you voice act this character, does that mean you can really act like them?”
  • makes cosplay for them
  • mc actually really appreciates it and wears it more often than they probably should
  • not that saeyoung is complaining
  • he loves it
  • “your character can’t have a love interest unless it’s me, whoops”
v / jihyun
  • what a supportive baby!!
  • but he’s also totally in love with their acting
  • it was his favorite movie!!!
  • thinks they really capture the scenes and the emotions
  • is lowkey jealous of that onscreen kiss they did once
  • mc teases him about it
  • he always rolls his eyes and is like, “it’s fine, you’re mine after all.”
  • mc grins and kisses his cheek “I know, jihyun”
  • he’s still lowkey jealous though
  • “…do you kiss me like that?”
  • “no, jihyun.” he pouts
  • “I kiss you with even more passion.” and now he’s blushing
saeran
  • what is saeran into, you ask?
  • this one video game, but its a kind of an obscure one
  • so even mc is surprised he found it
  • gasps when he finds out and asks them about the experience
  • they describe it to him and he thinks its so cool
  • mc has developed a habit of saying those little encouragements from the game to saeran
  • it actually helps him, how cute
  • it’s an automatic pick me up trick for mc
  • sometimes he complains about it being unfair
  • but he loves it, please don’t stop mc
Seungcheol- Is it just me or would Seungcheol be super confused at first? “Babe, a package came in the mail? It’s a bunch of manga and anime stuff? When did you buy all this?” He’d find it super cute though when he finds out. A lot of teasing… “Damn sweetheart, you don’t even obsess about Seventeen as much as some of this…” He’d probably be super curious what it was all about. Finds out your next shipment of stuffs is coming at 5:00pm and ends up staying up until 4:00am reading/watching anime. He’s hooked. Now he obsessively nerds out with you about all your favs and y'all get into fights over who’s merch was who’s.
“Stop stealing my manga to read on the toilet, y/n!!!”
Originally posted by scoupstv
Jeonghan- Probably doesn’t understand it whatsoever, but he loves you so he’s not going to complain about it. Unless you’re not paying enough attention to him, then he’ll jokingly take your stuff and hide it somewhere high up or under his shirt. “Yah! Are you in love with this or me, huh?” Always falls asleep on the couch with his head on your shoulder while you’re catching up on the latest and unapologetically fake snores or tickles you to get your attention. Surprisingly takes extreme care to never damage any of your prized possessions until maybe one day when something goes missing and he claims it wasn’t him although you found it under his pillow.
“I swear, I was just using it for scientific research, don’t kill me, y/n.”
Joshua- This dork is freaking the fluff out, he’s always been super into this kind of stuff and can’t believe you never told him so he could have someone to fanboy/girl over it with him. “Have you seen/watched/read this?” “You have to check this one out, y/n!” You both probably have every evening dedicated to geeking out together and making theories, a lot of discussions and arguments over plot, favorite characters, best ships. He’d probably be more happy about the whole thing than you are because now he doesn’t have to hide it either.
“Y/n, this just means we're a better match for each other, more than we thought!”
Jun- Oh my god this boi will tease you forever I swear. But not in the mean way, just enough to make you react in a way he thinks is freaking adorable. And because he wants to make you think he’s jealous. “Wouldn’t you rather be staring at me all day?” You of course tease him back and say no, which he lowkey get’s offended. You always explain the plot to him over and over because he forgets a lot. He wants to understand what he’s watching or reading but also just wants to hear you talk about something so passionately. Eventually he’ll want your attention on him again.
“Babe I’m so much better. Better looking, I’m a real person, which means I can touch you…”
Hoshi- Turns into a little fluffy hamster because even if he doesn’t like it as much as dance, he can appreciate you and your loves. In his mind it’s like, me = dance, y/n = anime. Thinks your reaction is the fluffiest ever so constantly buys you manga or anime plushies. Definitely will watch your shows with you. Cries when someone dies. “Y/n why? did? that? why?” “Soonyoungie, that didn’t kill them, they have powers.” “Oh.” Gets inspired by the manga or anime and creates seventeen’s choreography with it. So next time you guys watch or read together,
“OOO! Remember that choreo I showed you, it was from this.”
Wonwoo- You know this boy already loves to read. So when he finds out you like anime and manga, he’s reluctant. Not because he’s judging you but because he wants to like it too but what if manga isn’t his thing. Ends up really liking some of them because he really likes the plot, character, etc. Becomes comfortable with all the pictures with words. And secretly loves it just as much as you. “Y/n~ look what I got.” “HOW. THAT JUST RELEASED!” “Hehe, when me and the guys were in Japan…” You guys read them together. Always. But.
“BABE, did you read the first chapter without me?? I can see the book creases!”
Woozi- He’s the one pretending to not understand why you’re obsessing over this when he knows perfectly well why. Endless teasing, “Babe, why is there a small plastic person staring at me when we sleep?” Secretly thinks it’s adorable but would never admit it to you. He also loves anime but every time you bring this up he’s like, “what? who”. Denies any kind of fanboying he’s ever done. “nope you got the wrong person.” One day out of nowhere, he makes you listen to this track. “I got inspired while you were listening to that ost, and your love and passion for it made me realize all over again how beautiful you are and I put this together to remind you of that.”
“I can sometimes pay attention, you know y/n, and what I saw, I won’t forget, passion and beauty, something I admire a lot.”
Dk- Practically bouncing off the walls with excitement. Will ask you to explain everything too him with a bright smile. Get into multiple anime and manga but forgets it all. Always wants to watch it to see what’s it about but asks questions. “I DIDN’T KNOW THEY COULD DO THAT” Still fanboys with you, hypes everything up, buys you gifts when he remembers. You think he’s the most adorable ever because he’ll fanboy about something not knowing it at all. “Do you remember this character at all?” “Nope”
“Which one is that, y/n? Should I style my hair like that? Would it make you laugh?”
MIngyu- Protests about it at first, but will end up doing everything with you. Only protests because he wanted you to fangirl about him. He tries really hard to get into stuff with you, but he doesn’t really ever understand what happens. He’s too distracted by their hair colors and outfit choices to pay attention to the plot. He’s willing to bake themed cakes and make other themed foods for you whenever though, keeps dinners interesting. And good luck if you fangirl/boy over just one character too much. That’s going to make Mingyu playfully jealous, a lot of tickling and teasing and chasing around the sofa if you keep going on and on about your fav.
I mean I admit he’s handsome and cool, but I’m a much better visual to stare at.”
The8- He’d probably act the most indifferent on the outside, ”I’m not stupid, y/n, there’s a life-size cardboard cutout in the closet, did you think I didn’t notice?“ "Everyone has their own likes and preferences, doesn’t change the fact that I love you. So why even hide it in the first place?” Secretly looks at your stuff so one day when you’re talking about your fav otp, out of nowhere he says, “ ______ makes a better couple though.” You both would probably playfully bicker over the best couples all the time. He still pretends he’s not just as obsessive as you are though.
“I love you, quirks and all. Plus if you can still love me after trying to flip water bottles for a good hour or so, it all works out in the end.”
 Seungkwan- Is like what is this? at first. But honestly just pretending because he already kinda knew because of Joshua. Just wanted to see you slightly offended because you look cute. He’s going to be EXTRA af though. Goes around screaming character catchphrases and singing the OST’s at the top of his lungs. Cosplays as characters he barely knows and jumps off of chairs and from behind doors to scare you. “Guess who I am babe?” Acts out scenes repeatedly and runs around yelling and overacting as usual. Is fascinated by the costuming choices,
“Gosh for seventeen next concept, we’ll dress up as anime characters.”
Vernon- Finds it hella hilarious because he fanboys over stuff all the time and now he knows you do too. Y'all now both have your own fandoms that you always obsess over and neither of you want to get into the other’s. “A new episode comes out tonight!” “I already called dibs on the tv though!” A lot of tickle fights to see who gets the tv. He thinks it’s great that you have obsessions like he does and although you both aren’t really interested in each other’s fandoms, y'all fangirl/boy together. Also steals your fav character body pillow to snuggle with.
“I don’t know who this is, but if you want it back y/n, you’re going to have to take its place.”
Dino- This cutie is a confused marshmallow. He’s really respectful of your interests though, and never refuses you when you ask him to watch something with you. He can’t help it, you’re too cute to refuse. He, like Minghao, wouldn’t understand why you had to hide it though. He’ll drag you out to stores he researched and ask you to pick out all your favs, and then just listens to you rant about certain issues or episodes or characters. He loves listening to you go on and on about it and out of curiosity ask you to point out stuff in shops and explain the whole plot to him.
“SO you’re telling me, that there are like 60 characters you have to keep track of? How?”
MASTERLIST
~ admin jess & seri (but mostly jess haha)
anonymous asked:
I cosplay Killing Stalking and love it but it really shouldnt be cosplayed at con, a week ago I was ready too then had to hold my friend for 3 hours to calm them down from a panic attack after them just glancing at ks cosplayers. i dont think people should cosplay it at cons if it could completely ruin someone elses weekend
Sorry what happened with your friend anon, hope they’re feeling better and getting proper therapy.
But, I wholeheartedly disagree with you. People are allowed to cosplay whatever fictional character they want.
Listen, I honestly think there’s a difference between an attendee and a cosplay attendee– now besides the obvious difference, hear me out;
A cosplayer works so, so fucking hard on their cosplay. Even basic, simple cosplays are a drag– I know this because I’ve cosplayed a simple character and it was still difficult to find the right clothing, the right makeup, and how to fix my hair up (Wigs are hella expensive, and I mean the good kind, holy crap)
Cosplays take a lot of determination, sweat and blood, and love to make, and once you’ve finished, you’re so proud and happy about what you finished and created! And now you get to wear your hard work to a convention, and get to be a part of the cosplay group and interact with others and hopefully take photos and make wonderful memories!
Now let’s say this is someone’s first convention going as a KS character– they’ve put a lot of work into the costumes, and are excited to go, they paid for their way into the convention and everything.
This person has just invested money, sometimes a lot, into not just the costume, but also to go into the con, and maybe saved up to buy some nice merchandise. They invested a lot of money and time to going; normal attendees did not
I would be very, very upset, maybe even furious, if someone told me I could not cosplay a character, which I’ve worked hard on their costume, I’ve put a lot of time into looking just as I want too, and I also paid for the ticket in as is. I would feel hurt if a friend told me this. I would even be upset if I was excited and ready to start creating a cosplay for these characters, and a close friend of mine began freaking out and breaking down over the fact I’d be one of those cosplayers. I would respect their feelings, but I would also distance myself from that friend and probably take a family member or another friend who does not react that way to people cosplaying fictional characters.
Listen, as someone who has panic attacks and breakdowns from certain memories and songs, I understand the whole, “I’m gonna have a psychotic break down for three hours sorry guys.” I also understand this behavior is not okay, and many times have I even caused my own mother to go into a breakdown and become frightened of me, concerned for me and ready to physically drag me to a hospital, not because she thinks I’m crazy, but because she loves me and doesn’t want me to hurt myself, possibly kill myself.
But honestly, I think that was manipulative for your friend to have such a psychotic breakdown(3 Hours?) over these fictional characters– especially just at glancing at people cosplaying them, not even interacting with her.
I think she’s way too sensitive, and my suggestion is she shouldn’t even go to conventions until she goes to proper therapy and sorts this out. Her reaction was incredibly unhealthy, for her and those around her; what she did, my mother would have decided she is freaking out over, really nothing, and would of had her committed or hospitalized
I don’t care if a KS cosplayer ruined someone’s weekend; first of all you don’t even know them most of the time, they’re strangers, who also want to have a fun and happy weekend, make some new friends, get some cool stuff, take some awesome photos. Most of the time cosplayers don’t go and interact with others unless given the “Okay,” and wait for others to walk up to them. That’s usually how people function in public situations surrounded by strangers.
So my advice is stay away from those cosplayers, they aren’t out to hunt you down, they actually don’t really care about your presence and are focused on making sure their cosplay stays together and enjoying the con. If their mere presence makes you panic and freak out, in public mind you, then I recommend leaving the convention all together. Do not confront the cosplayers, just leave.
They also paid to get into the convention just like you, so you really have no right to dictate who gets to go to cons and who doesn’t. Conventions are not the internet, you will be confronting a person face-to-face, and this can lead to real repercussions for how you or the cosplayer behave and act.
I say talk to your friend about this, and not guilt trip, but explain how having a panic attack over just looking at KS cosplayers is really unhealthy, and she need’s to have that taken care of.
Also, she shouldn’t be attending any conventions until this is sorted out, if she goes to a convention and behaves like this, and me just assuming how badly her panic attacks are to mine, she will possibly be escorted out or medics will go to her aid and also take her– many cosplayers will most likely not want to be around her for fear of even inciting this behavior if they learn it was just by seeing those cosplayers –not to mention, she will be shaming those KS cosplayers, just for being there. A lot of bad things could happen, so I think she shouldn’t go to any conventions til then.
You and your friend are responsible for your own health and safety– do not pin this on others, nor should you have to baby your friend because she cannot handle the sight of people cosplaying Sangwoo and Bum. You may respect her feelings, you may be patient and kind about it, but do not allow her to manipulate and force you to do anything just for her– basically, don’t put everyone over your own happiness.
Of course, this is your opinion, but do not go to people’s inboxes, especially cosplayers, and begin to tell them, dictate to them, on why they cannot cosplay KS characters because they have to be sensitive and aware of other people’s feelings– strangers feelings.
Be there for your friend, but don’t enable this type of behavior. She needs proper treatment, and you should be able to talk to her about this and try to make her realize that what she did was not at all normal nor healthy for her. She needs to get to a point where she’s not projecting and combining fiction with reality– now that’s dangerous tambien.
Also, if there are any signs of this relationship turning one-sided and toxic, I would bounce.
Meeting the Avengers family; Chris Evans x teen reader
This request was my first ever Chris Evans request that I had ever written. I hope you guys enjoy it, not really any warnings except for utter teeth rotting fluffiness, sparks of first romance and the Three Leaders of Team Cap picking on a small Tom Holland.
It was the beginning of May and my dad Chris Evans and I have just arrived at the first location spot for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War film. Now I have been to all the premieres and heck I have all the DVD’s but I’ve never once gotten the chance to go with my dad to see him on set as Captain America (I blame school for that) but now since I’ve finished my finals and am currently done with school, I have bargained with my dad to allow me to go with him on set to see Avengers: Infinity War and here we are now.
“Okay (n/n) we’re here” my dad said as he patted my knee which made me take out my earbuds and shut my music off and I got out of the car with him and we were guided by some of the Marvel staff into the studio where we were welcomed by the entire cast and crew that were there.
