printmaking library

Do you use bookplates to mark ownership of your books? We have a small collection of personal and organizational bookplates here in Special Collections, and this is one of my favorites. Whoever this bookplate belonged to must have liked bugs - but hopefully he kept his books away from them.⠀ ⠀ Z993 .U595⠀ ⠀ #bookplate #illustration #printmaking #beetle #bugs #snail #garden #bookhistory #booklover #bibliophile #librariesofinstagram #iglibraries #specialcollections #mizzou #universityofmissouri #ellislibrary #ifttt

New volunteer Danny worked on digitising another treasure from the RA’s historic book collection, a volume of Jakob Ignaz Hittorff’s illustrations of ancient Greek temples. These plates were produced in full colour by chromolithography process to support Hittorff’s theory that these temples had originally been decorated in bright colours. Danny has chosen some of the colourful details of the architecture and animated them to share.

See below for the full page illustrations:

These images are from Restitution Du Temple D'Empédocle A Sélinonte, Ou L'Architecture Polychrôme Chez Les Grecs by Jakob Ignaz Hittorff printed in 1851.

We love the calligraphic half-title and the linoleum prints that adorn this 1954 edition of Aesop’s Fables. The design and linoleum blocks are by Antonio Frasconi, the book was printed by Joseph Blumenthal at The Spiral Press, New York, and the publisher was the Museum of Modern Art. Quite a collaboration!⠀ ⠀ #art #design #calligraphy #lettering #handlettering #cursive #linocut #printmaking #frasconi #finepress #rarebooks #specialcollections #universityofmissouri #mizzou #libraries #librariesofinstagram #ifttt
