Sugar Baby Education 101: Wine & Food Pairing

When you are an SB, it is important for you to play the part in your SD’s life, meaning be well educated about things and have proper etiquette and KNOW your wine… or have at least an idea about wine and food paring.

 So here, my hoes a little basic overview (if want to learn more about wine, just google that shit out!)


Just like adding milk into coffee will change its texture and taste; food when interacting with wine will affect its flavor. Different ingredients and preparation methods will bring out different taste sensations with the same bottle of wine.

There are a lot of pairing guidelines, but only one universal pairing principle –

A good pairing is when the food and wine do not overshadow each other. Wine and food can complement or contrast each other, as long as they do not mask each other’s unique flavor and characteristics.

Factors to Consider when Pairing

When pairing food, you are really complementing or contrasting four elements. The way the dish is prepared and cooked will affect these elements:

Body/ weight: heavy, medium, or light-body?
Flavor intensity: weak, moderate, strong?
Aroma: earthy, fruity, grassy, or herbal?
Taste: sweet, spicy, acidic, sour, bitter?

Example 1: Most people prefer pairing Cabernet Sauvignon with steaks because they are both full-bodied, strong flavor, and the protein in the meat will soften the tannin in the wine. A venturing wine lover may pair a red steak with a full-bodied white Roussanne.

Example 2: With spicy, strong flavor Thai dishes, the classic gourmets would go for a Riesling. Its neutrality will complement Thai cuisine’s spices. Its acidity and med bodied will match the weight of the food. A venturing wine lover may pair with Gewurztraminer or Marsanne.

Our Favorite Wine and Food Pairings:

It is not always white wine with white meat… Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, Chianti are few handful reds that pair well with chicken. Below we have listed our favorite pairings as a good starting point:

Western Dishes:

Chicken – Full-bodied whites (Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc) or light reds (Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, Rioja, Chianti)
Foie Gras / Pate - Sweet whites (Sauternes, Riesling Spatlese, Tokaji)
Green Salad – Herby whites (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, Vinho Verde)
Grilled Fish – Light to medium bodied whites (Sauvignon Blanc, Vinho Verde, Chablis)
Pasta (red sauce) – acidic reds (Barbera, Chianti, Zinfandel / Primitivo, Valpolicella)
Pasta (white sauce) – fuller bodied whites (Chardonnay, Viognier, Gavi, Pinot Gris)
Pizza - Sparkling or a fruity red (Prosecco, Barbera, Dolcetto, Valpolicella)
Raw or steamed shellfish – Crisp, acidic wines (Champagne, Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis)
Steak – Full-bodied red (Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Barolo)

Asian Cuisines:

Chinese – Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir
Japanese Sushi – Beaujolais, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling
Spicy Thai / Indian Curry – Viognier, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Rousanne

Cheese:

Creamy soft brie or camembert – Champagne, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, dry Riesling
Strong goat cheese – Sancerre, Sauvignon Blanc, Pouilly-Fume
Hard / Aged cheese – Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Brunello, Dolcetto, Merlot, white Burgundy
Semi-hard cheese – Semillon, Rioja
Smoked cheese – Gewurztraminer, Sauternes, Shiraz
Blue cheese – Sauternes, Banyuls, Port, Late harvest wines, Madeira, Amarone;

Last but not least, some PAIRING TIPS:

Acidic wines go well with many dishes. Sauvignon Blanc, dry Riesling, Chianti are great examples. In addition, acidic wines make salty dishes appear less salty.
For fatty food such as foie gras, try Sauternes (an equally rich and intense wine).
For spicy food, try fruity, low-alcohol wines such as Riesling and Gewurztraminer.
Sweet food goes well with a bottle that is slightly sweeter.

Pair complex food with a simple wine. And pair simple food with a complex wine.

On Minako and Yuuri

So…

I know a lot of people are trying to dissect Viktor and Yuuri and the dynamics of their coaching relationship. (It’s really hard though since there are literally no boundaries between them as student/coach, fiancés/lovers.)

But anyways: let’s talk about the single most underrated teacher/student relationship in the series.

The easy route to go with these characters is to parallel them with Yurio/Lilia. Both Lilia and Minako are celebrated dancers (they probably knew each other or of each other) and both are extraordinarily influential in their students’ skating styles. Yurio’s FS isn’t possible without Lilia’s ballet-boot-camp. We joke about how Yuuri’s dance mastery—and subsequent banquet shenanigans—is all because of Minako? 

What sets him apart as a skater?

His ridiculously high PCS scores? That’s Minako’s lasting influence—she trained Yuuri as a dancer, probably made sure he was as skilled in it as he possibly could be, and as a skater he made up the score gap with his artistry. Even notoriously hard to impress Yurio is intrigued by Yuuri’s step sequences—the figure skating component more “dance-like” than anything else.

But let’s go to the Scene that Keeps on Giving

1) We get Viktor and Minako in a room together. Please people, keep imagining them talking with each other. They are in many ways, very, very similar and very, very much in awe of Yuuri. If Viktor is an unending source of romantic love, Minako is basically his second mother, and an unending source of familial love. They are both Yuuri’s eccentric teachers.  They both are prodigies in their given fields.

(That pretty statue we see in Minako’s studio? That’s a Prix Benois and it’s the highest dance-award you can get. On that note… 

Hell: if Minako is in her 50s, she was most probably, in-universe, The First Asian Woman to Win All her Prizes. She was probably, in-universe, The First Asian Woman to Dance Principle in X, Y, Z Ballet Company Abroad.

I know homophobia is handwaved in the Yuri on Ice universe, and to a lesser extent, racism. But Phichit and Otabek are always pointed out as trailblazers. When you see them crying or proud because they’ve done something for their country that no one else has? Minako’s been there, done that, and still hasn’t aged.

Goddamn.) 

But going back to Viktor and Minako… Just think of all that underlying tension. Minako is all “Take advantage, Yuuri” to Yuuri’s face but you can bet she’s somewhat leery of Viktor. Because she’s heard the stories. If Yuuri’s idol-worship is keeping him from realizing how creepy Viktor’s arrival is… I’m imagining the good people of Hasetsu are all… “So this Viktor guy just shows up naked, unannounced, and he says he’s teaching Yuuri.”

(”Skating?”

“Yup.”

“Really?”

“Hand me another drink ji-san. He kept staring at my boy’s ass for all two hours of our ballet class.”)

Minako would probably be the first person to cut Viktor if he doesn’t make good on his coaching Yuuri promise.

2) The scene is used to establish that Yuuri is a genius of hard work.

(This distinction probably only means anything to Minako and Viktor, who most likely both worked their asses off but had the sheer talent to boost them up to living legend status.)

To unpack this:

Minako is low-key telling Viktor: “Yes, Yuuri gets anxious. It’s not just a competition thing. He’s been anxious his entire life. This is his coping mechanism.” 

And then: *bam* “I usually go along with him.”

Can we just?

Imagine baby Yuuri, who probably has used up all his spoons for the day, and then there’s his teacher Minako, who notices and goes all “Okay, what do you need? You need to skate? Ok. Let’s tell your parents, I’ll go with you, and I’ll stay with you.”

No questions asked, she’s just there.

Like—she’s either dancing with him or just watching him ice skate for however long it’ll take the anxiety attack to go away. 

The fuck.

For the entirety of his childhood, Yuuri has had this one woman support system of “You need to skate/dance right now? Kay, let me just find my coat, off we go Yuuri!” Can you imagine? How many hours? How many times a week? And she’d just go with him. 

Minako is the ideal teacher: She saw what Yuuri needed and gave it to him.

Bonus: She wasn’t at the GPF where Yuuri failed. She didn’t fly into Russia for the Rostelecom Cup where he was alone for the second half. You can imagine that before Viktor arrived, Minako was the person most likely to help Yuuri during an anxiety attack.

“NIKOLA TESLA FOR THE FIRST TIME DESCRIBES HIS NEW SYSTEM FOR SUPPLYING WIRELESS POWER TO RUN ALL THE EARTH’S INDUSTRIES.”

By a series of discoveries and inventions just perfected, Nikola Tesla, the electrical scientist, has upset what has hitherto been regarded as one of the fixed laws of nature. “Every effect diminishes with distance,” is the way the textbooks have expressed it. Tesla now says that instead of decreasing like other forces, electricity may be made to increase in intensity with the distance traveled.

The full significance of this discovery may not be at once apparent. It is obvious, however, that it annihilates space. There can be no limit to the power of the electric wave which increases in intensity the further it travels.

For nearly 20 years Tesla has been working on his plan, he calls it his wireless “World System.” If it is put into successful execution it will convert the earth into a gigantic conduit, which will pass power for all earthly activities, and make possible communication with other planets.

From time to time Tesla has made partial announcements as his work progressed. This, however, is the first comprehensive account of his system as a whole that the inventor has consented to give to the world.

“Through ages past man has anyways attempted to project in some way or other energy into space. In all his attempts, no matter what agent he employed, he was hampered by the inexorable law of nature which says every effect diminishes with distance, generally as the square of the same, sometimes more rapidly.

“I saw at once that space was annihilated in all the three aspects; in the transport of our bodies and materials and in the earth, transmission of the energies necessary for our existence. You can imagine how profoundly I was affected by this revelation. Technically, it meant that the earth, as a whole, had certain periods of vibrations, and that by by impressing electrical vibrations of the same periods upon it, it could be thrown into oscillations of such nature that innumerable benefits could be derived.

“It is difficult to convey an idea of these inventions without resorting to technical terms. The first and best known of these is my transformer, which enables the production of electrical vibrations of transcending intensities. I have already attained activities of many millions of horse power; but this is nothing compared to those which I am expecting to get with my improved apparatus.

“The second is what I have termed my magnifying transmitter, which I look upon as my best electrical invention, and with which any distance can be bridged. I have already passed of this wonderful instrument and am confident that a message can be flashed to such a distance as the planet Mars.

“Some technical men would be disposed to look upon such statements as those of a dreamer, but it is only because they have not had opportunities to see experiments which I have actually performed. The third invention I have designated as the “Art of individualization,” which enables the transmission of an unlimited number of messages through a wire or wireless, without the slightest interference. Not before this improvement is universally adopted will the world fully realise the benefits of telegraphy and telephony. The fourth invention is my receiver, which concentrates the energy transmitted over a wide area into the operating device.”

What would the voltage in your transmitter be?

“In the transmission of telegraphic and telephonic messages I shall employ from five to ten million volts, but in transmitting power in great quantities, as much as one hundred million volts will be used.“

How will your “World System” compare with those now in use as regards to cost?

“We could easily afford to offer a transmission of telegraphic and telephonic messages to any terrestrial distance for five cents a word. In a short while no one will think it anything out of the way to dictate or to write a long letter across the Pacific.”

How long does it take for the transmission of a message, by your system, around the world?

“The exact time is, according to my measurements, 43-1000 of a second, which is a speed about 50 per cent greater than that of light.

“The impulse starts from my magnifying transmitter with infinite speed, slows first rapidly and then at a lesser rate until, when it has penetrated to a distance of 6000 miles from the transmitter, it proceeds with approximately the speed of light. From there on it accelerates, first slowly and then more rapidly, and reaches the opposite point of the globe again with infinite speed only to rebound and pass through the same phases on its way back to the transmitter.

“This movement of electricity through the Earth, which takes place strictly in accordance with a mathematical law, and enables a great number of accurate measurements and determinations to be made, which are of immense practical and scientific value.”

Is your universal marine service based upon this principle?

“Largely so. In setting up and maintaining stationary waves in the earth its entire surface is subdivided in perfectly definite zones of electric activity, so that any observer of all those data which are of importance to navigators as the latitude and longitude, the position with reference to a given point, the speed of travel, and the course followed. This method is quite exact and reliable, and once introduced will be instrumental in a great saving of time, life and property.”

When your system of time distribution is introduced what kind of devices will be used for indicating the hour?

“They will be ever so much simpler than the ordinary clocks or watches, being entirely devoid of wheel work. For personal use a small case will be provided resembling that of a watch which would indicate precisely the time and require no more attention than a compass for instance. The large clocks on towers and public edifices in general will be replaced by extremely simple devices operated on the same principle.

“All these will be ‘tuned’ to a wireless wave sent out at a certain time. This will automatically set the hands of every ‘tuned’ time piece.”

In operating stock tickers, will the present instruments have to be replaced by others?

“Not at all, they will remain intact. A great financier told me that this should be one of the most valuable and practical applications of my system, inasmuch as the instantaneous operation of such instruments all the world over will go far toward allaying panics and failures which are at present mostly due to the inadequacy and stagnation of channels of information.”

“A business man will be able to dictate in his office a letter which will appear in type at any other place he wishes without loss of time in the transmission. It will be exactly as though he had his stenographer close by. In the same manner it will be practicable to send a handwritten letter or even a check, and what is more important, it will not be possible to falsify the signature.”

Will the transmission of complex musical productions require complicated apparatuses?

Not at all. The apparatus at any of the master plants, transmitting a great number of musical compositions, will be of necessity complicated, but the subscriber will need only a telephone receiver, and, if he desires exclusiveness, and individualizing device in connection, which, however, will be rarely required. He will be none the less able to listen to the most complex opera played in some remote party of the world. What is more, he can carry the entire outfit with him on his walks and travels, and whenever he desires to listen to the music he can do so.

The wireless system which I have developed does not contemplate competition with established lighting systems in densely populated districts, but it offers an ideal solution for the illumination of isolated places. The light will be furnished by exhausted glass tubes, bent in all sorts of ornamental shapes, and is of surpassing beauty, resembling closely the daylight. The lamps will last forever. The entire apparatus for lighting the average country dwelling will contain no moving part whatever, and could be readily carried about in a small valise. It will be quite immaterial in which region of the earth the house to be lighted is located. Distance will not affect the charge.“

How far from the Earth’s surface can power be transmitted by this wireless system?

“To any distance; in fact, the greater the elevation above the ground that easier it is to supply the power to the vehicle, such as an airship crossing the ocean.”

What do you consider the most important application of your system?

The transmission of power, of course. The operation of aerial machines alone will be of a revolutionizing influence, in as much as it will afford a perfect solution of this important problem. Another great field will be the irrigation and fertilization of the soil by wireless power. The time is not distance when a farmer will have installed on his place an apparatus for continuously manufacturing, from the gases of the atmosphere, nitric compounds which will be used to fertilize, while a motor will pump the water and perform other duties; all the energy being supplied from a plant perhaps thousands of miles away. This system can be extended so as to make productive vast tracts of now barren lands located in various countries. I believe that the export of wireless power will be one of the chief resources of the United States and other fortunately situated countries in times to come.“

milo is the product of a society where rebellion has been almost completely commodified and transformed into a purely spectacular activity. spectacular in the sense that it turns rebellion into something passively consumed rather than acted out in one’s own life. milo’s fans are acting vicariously through him through the consumption of his own acts within mass media (the most glaring manifestation of the spectacle). it’s a rebellious energy funneled into reactionary ends because of the lack of any real alternative.

it’s an inversion of the equally spectacular SJW discourse, where individuals live through mass media figures, with equally crafted and marketed personas, performing rituals (call outs, apologies, “checking one’s privilege”), and ultimately doing nothing off of their computer. it’s politics as a spectator sport, where one’s side is constantly scoring victories over the other through social media. it’s pseudo-politics, where one’s affiliation is more important than any ideals, principles, or common material interest.

“The spectator’s consciousness, imprisoned in a flattened universe, bound by the screen of the spectacle behind which his life has been deported, knows only the fictional speakers who unilaterally surround him with their commodities and the politics of their commodities.”

Sandwiches: a guide

1. A slice of cheese between two slices of bread. This is a sandwich. It is a cheese sandwich.
2. A slice of bread between two slices of toast. This is also a sandwich: it clearly has upper and lower bits and also a middle bit. Interestingly, a sandwich of this type was briefly haunted by the ghost of the fourth Earl of Sandwich, which has used its posthumous fame to blag its way into many of the world's best sandwiches.
3. A loaf of sliced bread. You might think that this was a sandwich, containing as it does some stuff (in this case lots of slices of bread) between two slices of bread. But one has to draw the line somewhere. Sandwiches, fundamentally, are not recursive items. A sandwich that contains another sandwich is not a sandwich, it is something entirely other. It is a cube in a land of squares. It may be a truly ecstatic dining experience. But a sandwich it is not.
4. A marshmallow between two biscuits. Here we come to one of the challenges in sandwich philosophy. Is bread required, or is an item having a bread nature sufficient? If so, does the mere act of enclosing another item between two slices of something lend to it a certain breadiness? Any person of a generous nature must surely be convinced of this truth - in which case, such an item is unquestionably a sandwich.
5. A person in between a duvet and a mattress. This is not a sandwich in the classic mold, lacking as it does the fundamental symmetry beloved of sandwich-eaters. It is however arguably an open sandwich with two toppings. This applies unless the person has recently eaten a sandwich, in which case see principle 3.
6. Two slices of delicious hedgehog, enclosing another slice of delicious hedgehog. Following the principles discussed above, this is definitely a sandwich. Furthermore, given that nearly everything is fundamentally still in the same place before and after slicing, I am sure you will agree that a hedgehog is also a sandwich.
7. The Universe. Applying the hedgehog principle more generally, we consider the theoretical case of dividing the Universe into three equal parts, the central one of which we will arbitrarily designate as filling. Using the sandwich normalisation axiom, it can be shown that the enclosing parts in this case have a bread nature. Therefore the Universe is a sandwich.
8. A slice of cheese between two slices of bread. As discussed above, sandwiches are not recursive. However, by applying principle 7 we have shown that the Universe itself is a sandwich. Therefore, nothing within the Universe may be a sandwich. There can be only one and all other sandwiches are a lie. I hope this clarifies matters in the great sandwich discussion.

Sometimes I look at the healthcare “debate” happening in the US and I just…Man, where do you start?

In New Zealand, we have a taxpayer funded free public health care system for most treatments. We have a no-fault accident coverage system that’s paid for by employer levies and the government, and covers prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. And we still have private insurance and healthcare available for people who want it, but it’s rightly seen as optional.

When I injured my spine, I walked (hobbled) into a physiotherapist’s office I chose after investigating my options, arrange to pay one small up-front fee to cover their admin, filled in a simple ACC form, and got 6 weeks of free, high quality care. If I had wanted, I could have pursued other care, including pain care and surgery, or gone to another physio, all without worrying that I wouldn’t be able to afford it. If I hadn’t been treated, I probably wouldn’t be able to walk unassisted, let alone work.

I never lost my ability to choose what care I received (which seems to be the main argument in the US against what you guys call “single payer”) and I got necessary, high quality treatment quickly. If we can do it, why can’t you?

Actually, don’t answer that. I’m not sure I’d like the answer.

The microscopic world takes on shapes and forms that we thought were merely an invention of our own minds.  This further amplifies the notion that geometry is a fundamental component of this universe.

When you look at photographs from an electron microscope, you may also notice other naturally-occurring patterns that exist on a larger, visible scale.  This is a reflection of the Principle of Correspondence: the microcosm reflects the macrocosm; “as above, so below.”

The Seven Hermetic Principles

“The lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding.” – The Kybalion

In the years of old Egypt, a fundamental truth was shared, which had a profound and remarkable effect on all esoteric teachings to come, from Christian mystics and the Jewish Kabbalah, up to the secret knowledge of India written down in the Upanishads. All these occult teachings show a resemblance in their deepest and most basic ideas. The master Hermes Trismegistos, whose actual physical existence had never been proved, has been said to be the “Master of the Masters”, “the Scribe of the Gods”, and even “the God of Wisdom” himself. As a mythological figure, the greek god Hermes is equal to the roman god Mercury and to the egyptian deity Toth; god of the moon, magic and wisdom. Hermes’ philosophy has been passed on both orally and in writing throughout the last several centuries. The first written version is said to be the “Tabula Smaragdina”, a text of twelve sentences that contains all knowledge, found within Hermes’ grave. While the original Tabula Smaragdina is missing, writings about it have been found in Latin, Arabic and Greek since several hundreds of years. In 1908 knowledge from the Tabula Smaragdina and the Corpus Hermeticum (other texts by Hermes Trismegistos) got translated and further elaborated in English, known as The Kybalion. The philosophy of Hermes is the key to the understanding of all mystic teachings, including astrology, alchemy and psychology, as well as the many occult writings of different religions. The purpose of all these teachings is the same - The transmutation of consciousness into a higher vibrational state.

The philosophy of Hermes, and thus of all occult and esoteric knowledge, is based on the Seven Hermetic Principles. These laws are universal and ineradicable.

I - The Principle of Mentalism

“The All is Mind; the universe is mental.” – The Kybalion

Our material universe holds a substantial reality, The All, within itself. This All is pure spirit, a living mind, unknowable and undefinable. It is infinite and eternal in time and space. Matter is a mental creation of the All. But while all matter is illusionary from an absolute point of view, it is very real to the finite mind, and must be treated so; however, always with a clear understanding of the higher truth.

II - The Principle of Correspondence

“As above, so below; as below, so above.” – The Kybalion
Our universe consists of the Three Great Planes: the great physical plane, the great mental plane and the great spiritual plane. The Principle of Correspondence implies that there is a harmony and correspondence between each of these planes, since they were all born from the same source. All laws and characteristics are universal and apply to all three great planes and their sub-planes. The alchemist knew that once he turns metal into gold, the same transformation will be done unto his soul.

III - The Principle of Vibration

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.” – The Kybalion
Everything within the All is in motion. Matter, mind and spirit are basically the same energy, but differentiate from each other by their rate of vibration. For us humans, the mental plane is eminently interesting, because all kinds of emotions, thoughts, will or desire, as well as any kind of mental condition, vibrates in its very specific mode. One can gain total control of their own mental states and moods by mastering this principle and change their own vibration, and also affect the minds of others by changing theirs. This phenomena is known as telepathy, induction or suggestion.

IV - The Principle of Polarity

“Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites. Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree. Extremes meet; all paradoxes may be reconciled. Everything is and isn’t, at the same time.” – The Kybalion
Everything within the All, whether it is material, mental or spiritual, has two poles, which are but the two extremes of the same thing, with many varying degrees between them. Mental transmutation can only happen by changing the vibrational rate within a thing, but a thing can never be changed in its nature. An undesired rate of mental vibration can be transformed by focusing and putting the awareness onto the other pole. As it is written in the Kybalion: “If you are possessed by fear, do not waste time trying to “kill out” fear, but instead cultivate the quality of courage, and the fear will disappear.” The tendency of nature itself is to move into the direction of a higher vibration, back to the pure spirit it once came from.

V - The Principle of Rhythm

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.” – The Kybalion
Between the two poles of everything, there is a pendulum-like movement, a measured motion with equal amplitude to the left and to the right. This balance of the swing is called the Law of Compensation. This law also applies to mental states in man, balancing the capacity for pain and pleasure. The more suffering one is able to bear, the more enjoyment awaits him, and vice versa. However, Hermetics use the Law of Neutralization by changing their own vibrations to a higher plane, and thus escape the effects of the negative swing of the pendulum on the lower plane.

VI - The Principle of Cause and Effect

“Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause; everything happens according to law; chance is but a name for law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.” – The Kybalion
There is no such thing as chance; there is a cause for every effect and an effect for every cause. Chance is a term for an effect that results from causes we can’t perceive or understand. Most of us go through life being mere effects; pawns to their own creation.
Those who are able to raise their vibration to a higher plane, those who understand that not only our acts, but also our thoughts and emotions will have an effect, become Causers instead of Effects. They dominate moods, characters, qualities and powers in both themselves and in others. They do not escape from causation, but they serve on the higher plane, and rule on the lower one.

VII - The Principle of Gender

“Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles; gender manifests on all planes.” – The Kybalion
Everything on the material, mental and spiritual plane contains the masculine and the feminine principle. Neither the masculine nor the feminine principle is capable of creating without the operative energy of the other. While the feminine principle tends to receive impressions, and generates thoughts, ideas and the full work of imagination upon these outer perceptions, it needs the masculine principle and its expressive tendency to generate and materialize original mental creations. Creation is only possible by a union of the two elements.

For the Hermetics it was not only essential to know and deeply understand these principles, but also to master, use and express them. Only then could some good come out of it for the possessor of the knowledge, and for the whole race. “True hermetic transmutation is a Mental Art”, speaks the Kybalion, “If the universe be mental, in its substantial nature, then it follows that Mental Transmutation must change the conditions and phenomena of the universe. If the universe is mental, then Mind must be the highest Power affecting its phenomena. “ The Hermetics knew that by raising their own vibration to a higher plane, and thus be able to rule on the lower one, they did not cheat, but play an important part of the game. They still served on the higher planes, fully aware that they could not destroy or avoid any principle.

“The half-wise, recognizing the comparative unreality of the universe, imagine that they may defy its laws. Such are vain and presumptuous fools. The truly wise, knowing the nature of the universe, use law against laws; the higher against the lower; and by the Art of Alchemy transmute that which is undesirable into that which is worthy, and thus triumph. Transmutation, not presumptuous denial, is the weapon of the master.” – The Kybalion

The seven universal principles

1. Principle of the Spirit - Everything is spirit.
The universe is mind, the universe is spiritual.
I pay attention to my thoughts and feelings - because they can create, modify, and destroy.

2. Principle of Cause and Effect - Every cause has its effect, every effect its cause.
I consider the effect on all my thinking, feeling, acting. I let go of hatred, anger and fear and open myself to the unconditional trust and love.

3. Principle of Correspondence
As above, so below - as below, so above.
As within, so the outside - as outside, so inside.
As in the large, so below.
As in the microcosm as in the macrocosm.
If I change, everything changes around me.

4. Principle of resonance - like attracts like and is amplified by the same.
My environment presents to me always what I myself radiating.

5. Principle of Harmony - The flow of all life means harmony.
Everything strives for harmony, for balance.
Who does not live wealth, will live without wealth.

6. Principle of Vibration - Everything flows out and in, everything has its tides.
I overcome rigidity and live flexibility.

7. Principle of Polarity and sexuality - everything has poles.
Everything has a pair of opposites.
Everything has male and female principles

It might at first seem attractive to say things like “Marxism can’t explain everything and although it is useful in its particular domain it’s not enough to explain the experiences of xyz, etc.”—but there’s a few things that people forget or don’t realize when they say that.

First, people mistake Marxism for a specific set of conclusions. When we realize that certain issues like racial or national oppression cannot be strictly analyzed through the lens of some pre-existing categories within the Marxist “canon,” we may be tempted to say that Marxism has reached its limit here. I must insist in contrast that, while i certainly feel many of the conclusions typically associated with Marxism are correct, all of these conclusions could actually be wrong and Marxism would still be “true” in the sense that it is most fundamentally a revolutionary way of approaching problems and enacting social change

Second, what is particularly insidious about the idea that Marxism “doesn’t apply” to this or that is the broader implication—which is quite consistent with postmodern theory in general—that different “domains” of life require us to use different approaches, different methodologies, different systems, etc. Wittgenstein, for example, was one of the people who most rigorously argued this, and he held that different domains of life were playing different “language games” which each had their own logic. One conclusion that follows from this is that no domain of social life is really poised to evaluate the validity of the others or appeal to universal truths. This can seem like a compelling line of reasoning, especially since it aligns with the dominant ideology of late capitalism. But it begins to fall apart when one realizes that, to even be able to distinguish where different domains of social life lie and what separates them requires a “global” logic by which you make the distinctions. Proponents of the notion that there can only be “local” theoretical and political systems tailored to the specific conditions of different “domains” do not at all escape appealing to universals; they simply leave the universal principles upon which they base their conclusion completely unsaid, which i feel is extremely dangerous. At least with the liberal humanists, although they simply assert universality from on-high and base their notion on the most vague of abstractions, you know what their assumptions are.

So the question is, what do you hold to be universal? Because without universality, the notion of specificity literally has no meaning.

What do i think? Well, i think Marxism as a theoretical and political practice does have boundaries, but it is able to evaluate where its own boundaries lie utilizing certain principles which are universal. To be precise materialist dialectics contain statements about the very nature of existence which are of necessity global. The fact that materialist dialectics are the product of a concrete practice—namely, taking the standpoint of proletariat in the realm of theory—does not jeopardize their universal “reach.” In fact, i would say that the proletariat, a force which occurs at the point where the various contradictions of society fuse, is particularly poised to access the universal.

Further, the boundaries of Marxism as assessed under the framework of materialist dialectics are larger than many people assume. Remember that Marx does not simply presuppose social class and then analyze society through that lens. Marxism is ultimately interested in the social formation as a whole and in particular in the transformation of that social whole. Marx arrives at the concept of social class as a result (not as the point of departure!) of the study of the social formation in its entirety (which is also why he really only began to concretely articulate the concept of class near the end of his life). So, Marxism is immediately relevant whenever we are talking about the revolutionary transformation of social life. And i am convinced that it remains the best tool for catalyzing revolutionary change there is. After all, it is not a coincidence that the most successful revolutionary movements around the globe have either been explicitly communist or have at least tried to appropriate certain elements of Marxism to suit their purposes.

Long story short, Marxism as a whole “package” may have limits, but they are broader than most people assume, and within Marxism there are universal principles, without which it is impossible to even distinguish what is specific.
