prickly poppy


Argemone polyanthemos is in the poppy family Papaveraceae. Commonly known as prickly poppy it is native to the southwest United States and Mexico. Prickly poppy grows in desert ecosystems and areas with dry sandy soils. The stems and seed pods are densely covered in spines as a defense against herbivory. However, unlike other species of prickly poppy, this species does not have spines that cover the leaves.
