“Can you reach it?” Lucas asked.
“Just about…got it!” Maya said triumphantly as she finally grasped the spinner with her fingertips. She pulled the small board over to where she was trying to balance. “Okay, ready?”
Maya spun the arrow. When it finally settled, she cleared her throat.
“Okay, that’s going to be left foot, green.”
Lucas searched the spots on the mat. He already had his right foot on a blue circle and right hand on a red one near the ends of the pad.
“Erm…” he knew the only way to reach a green spot was to do it over maya , who was stretched out beside him looking up. Maya was somehow balancing with her left hand next to Lucas’s, and her right foot underneath her, causing her knee to be bent out at an odd angle.
Here goes nothin’, Lucas thought.
As he lifted his leg over Maya’s midriff, Lucas felt his cheeks heat up and he didn’t dare make eye contact. He placed his foot on the green circle and made sure to press up on his toes so that he wasn’t touching the girl beneath him.
“Um, y-your turn,” He stammered and concentrated on staring at the floor.
“Yeah,” maya said. Lucas could have sworn she sounded a little nervous.
Maya reached over to the spinner again.
“Alright, left foot, red.” She squirmed a bit under her as she looked for the best way to reposition herself. “I’m gonna have to…” She didn’t finish. Instead she bent her knee, causing Lucas to blush as her thigh pressed between Lucas’s legs. It didn’t last long, though; Maya had quickly freed her leg and wrapped it round Lucas’s , finding her mark.
Lucas swallowed. How did it come to this? he wondered. he’d arrived at the Riley house an hour ago, hoping to relax and spend some quality time with his friends. But now Lucas was certainly the opposite of relaxed, and he mentally cursed himself for finding the Twister game in the storage closet.
“…okay?” asked maya lucas blinked.
“I said I have to use my hand to support myself, so you need to spin the arrow.”
“Oh! Oh, yeah—yeah, I can do that.”
Lucas had spotted the spinner near Maya’s hand. He reached over her and leaned forward.
I can’t reach it, Lucas was about to say. He made the mistake of glancing at maya.
They were close. Really close. If realizing their faces were only an inch apart wasn’t bad enough, Lucas suddenly became aware that their bodies were almost pressed together.
He felt Maya’s nose graze his jaw as he attempted to turn his attention back to the task at hand.
“Um…” Maya’s breath tickled his neck. “Don’tworryMayaigotit!” He blurted out, his words running together in a rush.
Lucas blushed at his strange outburst in addition to compromising position, and lunged for the spinner out of panic.
He moved far too quickly for Maya’s anticipation and his momentum caused Maya’s arms to give way, making them to fall to the floor.
“Lucas” Maya said in surprise.
Lucas quickly untangled himself from Maya.
“Sorry, sorry!” he exclaimed as he jumped to her feet. “I’m sorry, Maya,” he repeated. Lucas offered his a hand up, and maya took it.
“What happened?” she asked.
Lucas released maya ’s hand and took a step back.
“I—the spinner, I was trying to, um, we were—you, me…” he tried to explain.
Maya raised an eyebrow.
“We were…um…” lucas brought up his hands and touched his index fingers together.
Maya’s ’s face broke into a small grin.
“Oh, because we were close?”
“Yeah,” he coughed. “Does that…not bother you?”
This time it was on Maya’s cheeks that a red glow started to spread.
Lucas perked up.
“Oh!” she said in surprise and a small smile found its way to her lips.
“I still need to collect my reward from the bet,” maya said with a smirk.
“We bet that if I won the game you’d have to kiss me on the cheek,” he reminded her
“But you hit the ground first, so that means I win and you have to do my laundry for a month!”
“You were the reason we fell over though.”
Lucas chewed his bottom lip.
