Autism is not an excuse to gate keep transition.

It is unethical and immoral.

In the US at least, there is also a way around it.

There is no legal requirement in the US to provide a therapy letter for HRT, and there a lot of clinics and doctors that will prescribe with informed consent, requiring only a brief demonstration of knowledge of the side effects.

If you are autistic and seeking HRT and cannot get a therapy letter, look for a clinic that offers informed consent treatment. This is how I began HRT. All I had to do was sign a paper affirming that we had discussed side effects, and that the side effects were determinant and irreversible (in my case, sterility because of the long term use of spiro).

If there are informed consent clinics or doctors in your area, the transgender community will know about them.

I know it can be hard reaching out to an unfamiliar doctor. Especially if you have to fly low under the radar of parents, a workplace, etc. It can be difficult getting there, too. That struggle is real, especially if you are low income, no income, etc.

Many of these clinics have federal and state support. Fill out some paperwork, and they will reduce or remove the cost of your doctor’s visit.

There are ways to get HRT. Sometimes it is a fight. Especially in rural areas. Don’t give up. You can do the Hard Thing. You can get your needs met.
