I have received a lot of asks which film is the photoset of Madhuri talking about rape I posted last night. The film´s name is “Prem Granth”. It was directed by Rajeev Kapoor and released in 1996. Apart from Madhuri it had Rishi Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Govind Namdeo and other well known names in character roles.
Prem Granth told a story of Kajri, a young vivacious girl from a poor family, who is mercilessly raped by a serial-rapist. I will not go into the details of the story, because there is more than just this, let´s just say Prem Granth is possibly the ONLY (or one of VERY FEW) Bollywood film where the heroine is raped - not a side character who later commit suicide to make the mighty hero take revenge on her behalf. Kajri is raped and defamed in the eyes of society. But she doesn´t commit suicide. She doesn´t blame herself. After everything she manages to find a new life for herself. And in the end she takes revenge on the person who caused all her suffering.
This film was a huge flop. It received very bad reviews. Nobody cared about the story - it wasn´t a nice story after all, not something people wanted to see Nisha from Hum Aapke Hain Koun in. Nobody cared about amazing performances by some of the actors. All that was talked about was how bad Rishi Kapoor looked, that Madhuri gained weight and what critics found most appaling was that Kajri wore colourful clothes after she was raped. Because obviously as a rape victim she should never ever wear such clothes again. She should probably never feel happy. She should forever stay a living corpse.
Prem Granth, with the flaws it had, is a hugely underrated movie, that told a tale which is age old, yet so boldly put it was ahead of its time. People were obviously not ready to watch it back then. Question is: are they ready to watch it now and see beyond colourful clothes and not perfectly-fit hero?
So this weekend, I saw Prem Granth! Wow… what a phenomenal movie!
I knew that this movie was going to get me all riled up due to the subject matter, but GOODNESS, I really wanted to smack 75% of the men in the movie!
During the scene where Madhuri is BEGGING and pleading with Anupam Kher to give her child the burial rights, I wish I could have projected myself into that scene and MADE them bury her child…. Brooklyn style!
The scene immediately following that scene: All the feels in the world!!
During the engagement party… When Anupam walked in?
I love Anupam Kher but I wanted to stomp some balls into his character the whole damn movie!!
Reema Lagoo, who played Anupam’s wife in the movie? Even she was through with him!
Another scene I was so wishing I could jump into was the ass whupping that took place at the end of the film. If I would’ve been there?
If you haven’t seen this film, I wholeheartedly recommend watching it!!
One of the legendary actors Madhuri got a chance to work with was Shammi Kapoor. Here they are seen together, chatting merrily on the sets of Prem Granth. The entire Kapoor khandaan has always been very fond of Madhuri. Apart from Shammi, Madhuri shared the screen with Rishi Kapoor and Karishma Kapoor and let´s not forget Prem Granth was directed by Rajeev Kapoor. In her third film, Swati, Madhuri played daughter to Shashi Kapoor. Most recently Madhuri got to work with Ranbir Kapoor in a special song in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
