Okay, so basically a friend of mine made a post about how people shouldn’t be shipping actors with other actors especially if they’ve already said they don’t like it or it makes their spouses uncomfortable. A couple of Supernatural fans (who apparently ship Cockles, which is the real life version of Destiel) started sending her tons of hate for it because she was “interfering” with their “precious ship”. I guess it got so bad that she had to delete the post and take a break from tumblr because the fans got increasingly threatening.
She told me about it and I realized that I had never actually noticed how pushy and creepy fans can be towards real life people. Especially actors of television shows or YouTubers as well. If you look you’ll find that there are fans out there who will go as far as to draw or write porn of these people and sometimes even have the guts to show this to the actors or gamers/vloggers should they ever meet them.
Most fans (NOT ALL FANS) think it’s perfectly alright for them to even harass a gamer’s/vlogger’s/actor’s spouse or significant other for the sake of a stupid ship or pairing they have. I don’t think they realize how wrong it is to do that, and even if they did know they certainly aren’t showing that they care.
Another problem fans tend to have is objectifying certain people. I think one of the best examples would be YouTubers (like Markiplier or Cutiepiemarzia). The amount of expilicit fics there are out there of YouTubers is honestly worrying, it’s like fans don’t realize that the real people they are writing about can actually see what their posting (if they look for it, that is). People tend to leave disgusting comments on videos too, it’s sometimes hard to look through a comment stack without seeing someone comment on how they’d want to “do” the YouTuber. It’s sickening.
Now, people who “ship” couples that are already together is just fine and dandy. For example, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, who are currently dating. There are tons of art and pictures of them were people are fawning over them and such. And I think that’s certainly alright, to an extant, I mean sometimes fans can pry too much. Now look to the fans who “ship” two people who aren’t married to each other, but to other people, and go as far as to write explicite fanfiction of said two people. This is a main case from the Supernatural fans who pair up Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins, or “Cockles”. I think people fail to realize that both men are in healthy, stable relationships with their significant others and both even have children with said significant others. I just think some fans can take it too far.
I mean, go on and do what you want, but just please please please understand that these are real people. Human beings with feelings who aren’t just there for your fantasies or whatever. Fan art is great! Just please take in mind that real people aren’t objects to do with as you please.
