pre flashpoint

barbara gordon is canonically

  • a disabled woman,
  • an intersectional feminist,
  • one of the smartest members of the batfamily,
  • and the leader of a badass all-female superhero team,

and it breaks my heart that she’s probably going to be reduced to “cute girl who punches bad guys and makes jokes and has a crush on nightwing” in joss whedon’s batgirl movie.

if new 52 superman is dead and pre-flashpoint superman is the new superman and lex luthor claims to be superman’s successor and clark kent is alive but superman isn’t and there’s another superman in the east, who’s driving the car

Big Rumors

4chan has been causing some noise with big rumors of big changes coming to DC. I’ve decided to take a look at what they’re saying and share my opinion.

1)      Dark Days is the mysterious “Metal” event Scott Snyder has been teasing he’ll do with Greg Capulo. It will bring characters from alternate Universes to Prime DC Earth, some of which will try to take it over. Some of them will stick around after the event and be featured in books from September, when every title will get a one-shot setting up new status quo after one year time skip. – Pretty standard, I could buy this one.

2)      One of the characters that stick around will be Superboy Prime, whom Clark will try to redeem on the pages of Superman. – Risky move since it’s Prime but I could totally see Superman try to redeem him.

3)      We will see the return of JSA with Power Girl, Jay Garrick, Red Tornado, Alan Scott and Johnny Thunder, in a new book by Dan Abnett – Will those be Earth-2 characters back to the Prime Earth or Pre-Flashpoint versions?

4)      Another character from another Universe to stick around will be Mar’I Grayson, daughter of Dick and Kory. Nightwing will have to search for her in his own book. – I could see it. If this and 14 will be true, I want them to cross over.

5)      Another will be Bart Allen, who will be featured as Impulse alongside Jesse Quick, Max Mercury and older Wally West in Speed Force by Brett Booth and writing and art – Hell yes Bart is back. And since people wanted a team of speedsters – yeah, I can see this too.

6)      Red Robin will escape from Mr. Oz’ captivity and free several other inmates, leading them as the new Outsiders – They kept Tim quite a bit away, he really could return. Hope Conner and few other forgotten characters will be on this team.

7)      Cyborg will be canceled but replaced with a team-up book (mini?) between him and Shazam, by John Semper. Hal Jordan and Green Lantern Corps will be relaunched as Green Lantern Corps with Hal still leading, but Kyle dying in Dark Days and John and Soranik going to Cullen Bunn’s to Yellow Lanterns.  Don’t worry, Green Lanterns will still be going and keep its creative team, but will go monthly. – Don’t know about the others but I could see Green Lanterns turning monthly. I’ll be mad if they’ll kill Kyle.

8)      Other canceled titles are Superwoman and Blue Beetle with Jaime joining Teen Titans. Red Hood and the Outlaws as well, with Artemis and Bizarro returning to Wonder Woman and Action Comics and Jason getting a solo series by Lobdell. – Totally could see Blue Beetle canceled and Jaime joining Teen Titans and we already have rumors about Superwoman ending. But I thought people liked new Outlaws.

9)      Due to poor sales both Batgirl and Batgirl & the Birds of Prey will be canceled, Barbara will make heroic sacrifice putting her back into a wheelchair. The books will be relaunched as Birds of Prey, where Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary are joined by Lady Blackhawk and Batgirls by Genevieve Valentine, where Barbara trains Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown as her successors. – And this one I cannot buy. DC was so adamant to keep Barbara as Batgirl I find it now hard to believe they would give in and make her Oracle again. And Babs training Steph and Cass written by Genevieve Valentine sounds too good to be true.

10)   Which of course means Cass is leaving Detective Comics. So is Clayface and the post-Dark Days roster will keep Batman, Batwoman, Batwing, and Azrael and add Duke Thomas, Harper Row and Anarky. – Happy to see Luke and Duke in one team since I wanted that and Harper and Kate could result in them showing up on another ball in tuxedos to pick up ladies, so I both could see this happen and would welcome them as additions to the team.

11)   Other new books announced are Legion by James Tynion, Checkmate by Tom King and World’s Fines by Tim Seeley, where every issue features a team-up between different members of Batfamily and Superfamily. – Team up book? Please let it be real, I always liked those.

12)   Batman leading the JLA will be revealed to be Martian Manhunter in disguise. – For what purpose?

13)   More miniseries including 12-parts mini about Crime Syndicate of Earth 3, Justice Incarnate by Peter Thomasi and a completely new Batman Beyond starring Damian who grew up without knowing Bruce and a GCPD cop Sarah Grayson, Dick’s daughter, as his love interest. – Does that mean current Batman Beyond will be canceled?

14)   Slade Wilson will go missing with Rose taking the codename Deathstroke as she tries to find him. – Okay, on the one hand, Deathstroke editor recently teased a bold new direction (still by Priest) but on the other, it was something I once cooked up and proposed on this blog, even got in an argument whenever it would be a good decision with @rosewilsontheravager . It could be something they put for people like me to go nuts….

I've been trying to get into DC Comics recently but you know needless to say there are... a lot. I don't really know where to start, any suggestions??

major DC events in chronological order

  • Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985): all alternate realities are destroyed, recomposed and compressed into a unified universe. old heroes die/get erased, new heroes get introduced. the heroes that remain get re-characterized (for the better)
  • Death of Superman (1993): superman dies to doomsday
  • The Retun of Superman (1993): we have superboy, cyborg superman, trigger-happy superman and steel superman trying to establish who the new S-carrier will prevail. by the end they all pipe down because clark returns with a very questionable hairdo
  • Zero Hour (1994): hal jordan is a green lantern. parallax is the entity of fear manifested into reality. parallax takes over hal jordan. hal jordan/parallax is about as evil as your fourth-grade math teacher that calls on you clearly knowing you don’t know the answer. parallax destroys the timestream because he’s a little bitch. another little bitch called extant is like “yo i can reconstruct reality itself as i want to because i was bullied as a kid.” it all ends in a literal big bang. reality is reconstructed. there are still plotholes but we pretend they’re all fixed
  • Final Crisis (2008): people of a different reality/frequency are trying to end wars between their gods, it all fails because of course it does. darkseid, a king of one the planets from said different frequency, wants to invade everything. he also knows batman is a mary sue and will inevitably stop him. he kills him (only not really) which then bites him in the ass because he predictably gets owned in a fight against him. in the after-life. while batman is dead..?
  • Blackest Night (2009): a clusterfuck
  • Brightest Day (2010): heroes previously dead from the aforementioned clusterfuck are brought back to life and now they’re like “lol why?”
  • Flashpoint (2011): barry allen (the flash) wakes up to a parallel reality where his mother, unlike his original timeline, is alive. in an attempt to return back and fix the chasms in time he himself created by previously attempting to save his mother from being murdered in his own timeline’s past, using the entire speed force and becoming it, he resets everything once more, thus “””””fixing””””” the mess. the flashpoint reality is deleted, his own timeline gets altered because dc wants to fix plotholes (they don’t. they never do) and now we have every hero’s past reset
  • The New 52 (2011-2016): LOL NO WE DON’T BATMAN AND GREEN LANTERN KEEP THEIR PRE-NEW 52 BACKGROUNDS WHILE ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS AND CHARACTERS WE KNEW EITHER GET COMPLETELY OMITTED OR CHANGED TO THE POINT THEY’RE NOW ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. aquaman comics are good tho. they’re good
  • Convergence (2015): happened in the middle of the new 52, brainiac attempted to collect cities from different universes (the pre-new 52 ones too) and put them on the same planet, pitting them against each other because he’s a little sadistic fucker. by the end of the event, all these characters either die, disappear or, in the case of pre-flashpoint superman, lois lane and their son, they arrive to the new 52 universe. yes, while our current superman is still active
  • (but he died)
  • (and then we got the pre-flashpoint superman as our current superman)
  • (while every other hero is technically their new 52 counterpart)
  • Rebirth (2016): doesn’t constitute a reboot, it’s simply a continuation of the new 52 with some things fixed but not reset

pick whichever hero you like (even if you’re just going by design), find their recommended guide list here and start reading, unless you wanna start with batman comics, then screw every other guide and read my own because i spent time on it. if you don’t understand a thing yet, give it time. comics are too much, they’re not meant to be caught up on a) all at once b) completely. just have fun, read what you like, you’ll inevitably meet every other hero because everyone knows each other. it’s like a small town’s AA meeting

anonymous asked:

is there any information u would consider relevant to know for the wonderwoman movie?

i’m not going to assume too many (and sometimes obvious) specifics because the movie may have chosen to interpret them differently to fit the overall universe and i don’t want to confuse you further, but some of the things i don’t think will change substantially:

  • *the DCEU version of wonder woman is apparently following her new 52 origins which means that, unlike her pre-flashpoint origins where she was made out of clay, here she’s the daughter of the olympian god zeus and the queen of amazons hippolyta. that makes her a demi-god and explains her ability to still kick around in the modern timeline
  • her lasso of truth has the ability to not only make you speak the truth but see it yourself, understand and sometimes accept it too, effectively rendering bad guys useless if they have a conscience. it was made by the god hephaestus and it’s completely indestructible
  • diana’s iconic bracelets are actually steel cuffs that all amazons wear as a reminder of the time they were enslaved by hercules to show they remember and won’t ever be subjected to such or any oppression ever again. it’s occassionally been said that diana’s, specifically, are made out of part of zeus’s shield and/or that they have the abilitiy to contain her true power so she doesn’t completely wreck her opponents. it’s why we sometimes see her in the comics take them off if the danger is too high and she needs to end the threat immediately
  • she has a myriad of powers than can even rival superman’s, and they were primarly given to her by the ancient greek gods who are patrons to the amazons and paradise island/themyscira (the ones that aren’t complete dicks, anyway)
  • steve trevor is considered to be the link between the amazons and man’s world because he was the first one to, after a very long time, show up on paradise island, largely later helping diana settle in our world. it also helped that he wasn’t a douchebag so thank you steve
  • let me make clear that the amazons had absolutely no intentions of interacting with man’s world ever again since hercules and his men had completely broken their trust by pretending to come in peace and then subjugating them. they consider us lost, dangerous and to be disregarded. queen hippolyta continued being weary even after diana proved that we might not suck so bad
  • she’s funny. unintentionally at first because she had no idea how anything here worked, but later too, because she’s too clever not to pick up some good puns along the way
  • she’s kind and gentle but she values truth above all else so she will sometimes go to extremes to get it if it’s important
  • she’s (and will be in the films too) a founding member of the justice league which means she had to deal with batman from day one and yet she’s kept her sanity. that’s like… a plus ten in my book
  • a p p r e c i a t e   e t t a   c a n d y

*edit: some of you are making some fair points that the trailer more or less proves she will have her clay/non-flesh and blood origins that i misinterpreted from not remembering the trailer correctly. so there’s that :)

routine reminder that barbara gordon, cassandra cain, and stephanie brown are (or were, pre-flashpoint) all interesting, complex, empowering female characters who are at least as brave, capable, and selfless as any male member of the batfamily, and that I love them even if dc doesn’t.

new 52 superman: best friends with batman, much smaller age difference between them, are basically brothers by the end of the n52

rebirth/pre-flashpoint superman: batman is a nerd, jon. make fun of him lol

Announcement!

DC Rebirth presents an interesting change in the status quo as far as continuity goes.  I have been paying close attention to the series that address how the DCU has changed and have been trying to make sense of what is now canon.  But Barry Allen off-handedly mentioned something that explained everything.

Hypertime.  They reinstated Hypertime.  Basically almost everything pre-flashpoint is canon again and every contradiction is explained away by Hypertime.

Hey would happen to know why barry and oliver really dislike each other?? i havent read too many of the comics with the both of them and im confused by this???

oliver is a very intense dude, and pre-flashpoint he was even more intense about politics (he’s as anti-establishment as someone can possibly get), so he’d more than happily get into your face to let you know exactly what his opinion was, in his usual passionate way. he’d constantly come head to head with half the dcu, including barry, hal, bruce and even clark

barry wasn’t having much of ollie’s way of expressing his views and since he always seemed to lean towards right-wing politics (opposite of where oliver’s politic beliefs stand, they essentially both want what’s good for the people around them but barry is inclined to follow orders and not question authority about 100x more than oliver, who is very likely to flip said authority off), and as a result there were a couple of times where this was the normal between them:

look at hal. look at him. where’s an alien invasion when you need it

TumblrFrostbite: Can you make a pic with an older Pre-Flashpoint Damian wearing a different Robin outfit that'll fit him.

This was supposed to be a quick drawing but I got lost in detail whoops. (Hope you like it!)

Did you see what DC are doing? Today in Superwoman they implying our new 52 Superman is actually the pre new 52 Superman and he’s with Lois. Like seriously? what are they smoking?  I know what I read for the last 5 years and it is not this crap. Our Clark, who they gave Kryponite cancer, is dead. He was in love with Diana. He had no romance with nu 52 Lois! How can they seriously undermine everything like that in one stupid issue of a comic just to push the old status quo? Nothing is earned and they dump everything to pander to clois fans who already have a Superman and Lois and son currently in the comics. This is not even good writing. It is making stuff up to cover up the glaring plotholes to pander to Rebirth. I came on board with the new 52 and enjoyed the stories. If this is how DC operates with story, and new fans then I can’t be investing my time or $$ to be lied to and misled. I feel disrespected as a customer. Could they not have just ended the new 52 on a high note and give the older readers what they wanted with Rebirth? Least I would have had my stories. I look at the books I have now and I feel so angry.

This is called hacked writing.

DC is flat out lying and changing everything at a whim to serve Rebirth. He is with Lois? Look, new 52 Superman was in love with Diana of Themyscira aka New 52  Wonder Woman.  New 52 Superman had his own origin in a company reboot in 2011. He was not pre Flashpoint Superman. He was his own version like the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, animation, movies, tv all had their varying origins but essentially the character being a Superman at his core. DC cannot come now and claim the other guy is him. This is dumb and contrived and yes a total disrespect to those of us  who picked up the books and believed the advertising ie it   was a new verse being developed. In short, DC lied to us to buy a falsely advertised product for 5 years. The guy pre Flashpoint does not have the same origin as new 52. They want to steal and merge two vastly different lives without the groundwork.

It is scathing disregard for new 52 Diana. Rebirth writers treating the character as if she was some sloppy seconds or some dumb mouthpiece to justify the changes . This is the woman who was there for new 52 Clark in the most critical times in his life. Not new 52 Lois who did not earn his love. Nor did she constantly put herself at risk to help him as Diana did. Diana from Throne of Atlantis through to Trinity War, Darkseid War, Doomed, Truth, Rao’s invasion,  Final Days,…was at his side, supporting, protecting, fighting alongside and defending her Clark. She loved him and he loved her. He wanted to marry her. Not Lois. New 52 Lois dated other people, saw him mostly as a good friend, got engaged to another man, outed Clark secret etc. And she gets new 52 Superman’s heart based on what? Because they decide to change things at will overnight? Wipe out new 52 Diana and hijack our Clark? And then no doubt change the whole way everyone met and history to pander to themselves. The ironic thing in all this will be the people who hated on new 52 Superman and called him fake will want to say he is real now because he is with Lois. I guess who you bang is what gives you morals and motivates you according to DC. Not your upbringing, choices, heart, honor etc. Diana clearly being with him makes him not Superman because she is … what? Not a good person? Or only Steve Trevor can make her a good hero? Screw all of you at DC who have this idiotic thinking.

I have no respect for creators and a company who do this. As you say, end a story properly. Make it matter and count. Start the new story and do your thing.  Don’t steal, usurp, undermine stories that came before. Your talent did not create it to just wipe it out or steal it as yours. God forbid all the fans could have something to read and comics be inclusive and appeal to a more diverse readership than only give to the demo that demands nostalgia, rehashes and insist nothing must change.  I feel there is such a level of spite/vitriol leveled at new 52 by some of these so called professionals. I have read what they called fans who don’t kiss their butts and dared to like the changes/stories in the new 52. DC gave us that and they call us “not true fans”, “fake fans”, “haters “etc? Don’t worry your company has ensured many like me will vote with my wallet and give my hard earned money to talent and story telling that is not convoluted, has coherence, not fixated on hating others, and can be understood and isn’t jumping the shark.

We have our ship. We had it before and we’ll still have it. It is growing because people love Clark x Diana. They are a true relationship of equals. Detractors can’t stop that no matter what they try. The fact they have to lie, jump through hoops to do it shows how they have to scrape the bottom of that barrel.

So to Rebirth, Reborn, Regurgitate whatever  you are.
