prayer of a son

Three Teachings from the Lord on Prayer
Last week’s Gospel featured the Lord insisting that prayer was “the one thing necessary.” This week, we see the disciples’ request that the Lord teach them on prayer. In answer, the Lord gives three basic teachings or prescriptions for prayer.

“Jesus then concludes, What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

The rhythm of the Lord’s analogy seems a bit odd here. If an earthly father knows how to “give good gifts” to his son, then we would expect Jesus to say that the Heavenly Father also knows how to give “good gifts” to those who ask. But Jesus does not say this. Rather, He says that the Father gives “the Holy Spirit.”

Why is this? Because it is the highest gift, and contains all others. To receive the Holy Spirit is to receive the love of God, the Glory of God, the life of God, and the Wisdom of God. It is to receive God Himself, who comes to live in us as in a temple. And with this gift comes every other gift and consolation, for by the Holy Spirit we begin to think and see more as God does. We attain to His priorities and desire what He desires. We see sins and worldly attachments begin to go away. And thus the world loses its hold on us and can no longer vex us.”

REFLECTION – So pleasing to God was Mary’s humility that He was constrained by His goodness to entrust to her the Word, His only Son.
And it was that dearest Mother who gave Him to us………….St Catherine of Siena

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, let me always have recourse to the Mother of Your Son. May she intercede for me before Your Divine Majesty so that I may be a true follower of Your Son and imitate her love of Him. Amen

One Minute Reflection – July 21

May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith…………..Eph 3:17

REFLECTION – For the word of God is a light to the mind and a fire to the will. It enables man to know God and to love him. And for the interior man who lives by the Spirit of God through grace, it is bread and water…For the soul is a spiritual treasure of merits yielding an abundance of gold and precious stones. Against the hardness of heart that persists in wrongdoing, it acts as a hammer. Against the world, the flesh and the devil it serves as a sword that destroys all sin………………….St Lawrence of Brindisi (Saint of the Day)

PRAYER – Heavenly Father, let me be a true bearer of Christ, Your Son, by doing always the things that are pleasing to Him. Let me always clothe myself in the Word made flesh in order that I may bear witness to Him in the world for the salvation of souls. St Lawrence of Brindisi pray for us. Amen

Craig Morgan Posts Heartbreaking Message Mourning His 19-Year-Old Son: 'God Has a Bigger Plan'

Craig Morgan took to Instagram to thank his fans and the Tennessee community for their outpouring of support on Wednesday, after his 19-year-old son, Jerry Greer, was found dead due to a boating accident at Kentucky Lake last Monday.

“The loss of our son Jerry is the hardest thing we have ever had to endure as a family,” the 52-year-old country singer writes. “[My wife] Karen and I are so grateful for all of the wonderful people who have shown us unwavering support during this difficult time.”

“ … We cannot thank the music and outdoor communities enough for wrapping their arms around us, as well as our industry friends, fans, and all those that loved our son,” he continues. “We are blessed by the outpouring of prayers and condolences from across the world.”

The family is using their faith to cope with the tragedy.

“Jerry may be gone from this earth, and we will miss him every day, but his spirit will live on in our hearts,” Morgan writes. “We will find peace knowing that God has a bigger plan, and that one day, we’ll be reunited with him again in Heaven.”

Greer is survived by his parents, as well as his sister, Alex Beaird, brother-in-law Ryan Beaird, and brothers Kyle and Wyatt Greer.

According to authorities, Greer and another man were on a raft being pulled by a boat when they were thrown from it. Greer, who was wearing a life jacket, never resurfaced.

A private service was held for Greer last Saturday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville. Family and friends of Greer have also established a memorial scholarship fund in his name “to honor Jerry’s energy, athleticism, and love of life,” which will benefit future athletes of Dickson County High School – particularly, those with dyslexia.

“He was a superstar without even trying. He was a natural athlete that accomplished what most spend a lifetime attempting to achieve,” Greer’s obituary reads. “He was a devoted and dedicated son, brother and friend. He loved his God, his family, his friends and his country more than anything. His passions were football, soccer and the outdoors. He will be greatly missed by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be forever in our thoughts, in our words, and in our hearts.”
