the prairie can be a wild place…

there is an 80 acre prairie relic that I venture into sometimes… in fact, the last time I was there I got hopelessly lost in a brambly, boggy section, with boot sucking mud grabbing my feet, and Sleeping Beauty level thorns tearing at my knees… I could not see very far beyond my own nose because of the tick infested shrubs obscuring my vision, and then miraculously I stumbled on this little patch of Prairie Phlox maculata (Wild Sweet William)… they were quite astonishing  and a nice respite in that angry section of prairie…

Gosh knows how Lewis and Clarke managed to navigate across miles and miles of this stuff!
