potter's bridge

the houses as things my dad has done
  • gryffindor: allowed his kids to go wild attacking him with water pistols in front of his peers and a lot of electrical equipment
  • hufflepuff: almost died dancing to 'cotton eyed joe' in a lion costume in church on the hottest day of the year
  • slytherin: got drunk and censored the wrong part of m******fucker
  • ravenclaw: walked into a pole because he was too busy admiring the architecture of a bridge

ok no offense but do drarry shippers just conveniently forget/ignore the fact that draco once paralyzed harry, stomped on his nose and broke it, and then left him invisible in the train in the hopes that no one would find him for a long time

like you do you, ship what you like, i’d just honestly like to know how y’all deal with it

50 - “I’m pregnant”

Draco wanted to murder someone.

Preferable Harry Potter.

(If only you could murder someone while still preserving their beauty. It would be a waste, after all, to not be able to look at Potter anymore, however much it hurt to do so.)

For Potter was stretching on the Quidditch pitch, legs spread, feet solidly planted on the ground and arms elongated over his head. The movement made his his t-shirt rise up, showing a glimpse of defined abs and trail of dark hair leading to… Draco snapped out of his daze the minute he realised that he was openly staring at Potter’s crotch.

Why must you be so gay, he chided himself, forcing himself to look away. To purposefully not pay attention to the way Harry’s bronze skin seemed to be shining, to not see how his muscles stretched tight and almost obscene.
Draco lasted about three seconds before snapping his head back.

Potter was now laying down on the ground, arms resting next to his torso… what in the hell was he doing? But then… oh. Potter lifted his butt, lowered it to the ground and repeated the movement. Again and again and again. Fuck, Potter was doing butt bridges. Draco wanted to face palm, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away from the scene.

The little control Draco had over himself until that point seemed to slip away.
Potter was humping into the air, and he was panting, sweating, his hair sticking to his forehead and, fuck, Draco shouldn’t find this hot, but he did, his blood rushing south so fast it was almost dizzying, his stomach so full of heat that it was almost as if he…

“I’m pregnant,” he choked then, unable to hold it in, because he felt like he was, pregnant on his desire for Harry, Harry, Harry…

Wait.

Oh.

Fuck.

Draco had actually said that. Out loud.

And the worst thing was… Potter had stopped moving. Potter had heard him.

Next time he came to spy on the Gryffindor practice, he was not going to seat on the first row of beaches. Hell to that, he wasn’t going to come watch the Gryffindor practice ever again. He wasn’t going to show up at lessons, either. He was going to run back to the manor, right at that second, be home schooled for for the rest of that eighth year, then work from home. There was no way he would ever show his face outside again, he was going to live as a hermit and -

“What did you just say?” came Potter’s voice, interrupting his train of thought.

That brought Draco back to reality with a snap.

Potter had risen completely, looking at Draco with wide eyes shining beneath his glasses. “You’re pregnant?”

Draco opened his mouth. Closed it again.

For the first time in his life, he felt speechless in front of Potter.

Potter raised an eyebrow at his silence, sighed, and then did the most improbable thing - he started walking towards him.

Fuck.

Potter inched closer and closer and closer, until he was standing dangerously near. “Potter, what are you… ” Draco started saying, but was swiftly cut off by Potter, who had bent down to kiss him.

For a second everything else disappeared, Draco’s world zoning down to this, to the soft sigh against his lips, to Potter’s body falling down against his.

Then he reacted, scooping Potter up in his arms to get more, he needed more -

Draco Malfoy wanted to murder someone.

At the moment, though, he was content like this, with Harry’s soft lips against his.

Preferably forever.

Fic Rec: Azoth by zeitgeistic (faire_weather)

Title: Azoth

Author: @lol-zeitgeistic

Rating: Explicit

Word Count: 88722

Author’s summary: Now that Harry is back at Hogwarts with Hermione for eighth year, he realises that something’s missing from his life, and it either has to do with Ron, his boggart, Snape, or Malfoy. Furthermore, what, exactly, does it mean when one’s life is defined by the desire to simultaneously impress and annoy a portrait? Harry has no idea; he’s too busy trying not to be in love with Malfoy to care.

Thoughts: Sooooo much UST. Potion-making sexytime to rival the infamous pottery scene in Ghost. Cockblocking portrait!Dumbledore.

Azoth turns up on many Drarry “favorites” lists and for good reason. This is a well-crafted story that can stand alongside professionally published young adult (YA) literature. It also does what the best fanfiction does: builds on the existing world structure and enriches it at a deeper level.

I use the descriptor “professionally published” with caution, because I realize that for many people, publishing with a major mainstream house is neither the point nor the goal of writing fanfiction. Yet, Azoth has the polish of a produced book, and I would even say it meets (or surpasses) the bar of working as an “eighth” Hogwarts book relative to Rowling’s canonical series. My use of the term “YA” literature should not be taken as a form of literary ghettoization; rather, the most highly regarded YA books tend to deal with the coming-of-age/transformative aspects of adolescence. Azoth falls squarely within this tradition.

The story opens at Christmas, where Harry and Hermione are visiting the Weasleys during the holiday break of their 8th year. Ron has just been accepted into auror training. The three are growing apart as they follow different career paths and shifts in friendship groups.

Harry  is changing, growing up, slipping out of the shadows cast by Dumbledore and Voldemort. He has to decide whom he is, and it’s making him uncomfortable. He doesn’t like it that he’s growing apart from Ron, who was once his most precious thing. Harry also has to confront the reality that he doesn’t want to become an auror, which had been his vague plan  since fifth year. He doesn’t understand why he is becoming friends with Malfoy. An encounter with the Mirror of Erised and a boggart emphasize  this theme of unstable selfhood. Harry is afraid of staying the same, yet he is also afraid of change.

In this version of the  wizarding world, students can pursue apprenticeships for more training post-Hogwarts. In a brash defiance of  expectations, Harry decides that he wants to become a potions master and do a  three-year apprenticeship under portrait!Snape. Since Harry basically knows nothing about potions, he has to ask Draco for tutoring. Draco agrees in return for help in achieving his animagus. As the two work together, Harry finds himself  increasingly drawn to Draco (no surprise there), whose own identity struggles lead him to push Harry away. Cue pining:

“And when Malfoy smiled at him, it was the worst thing in the world. There was no way Harry would ever be able to move past this one time, when, for a moment, he’d been the only thing on Malfoy’s mind, and it’d been a good thought.

But then Malfoy stood to leave, breaking the moment and the muffling spell, and leaving Harry stuck half-transformed and wholly undone. His entire life was becoming an Animagus transformation. He just wasn’t sure which he wanted to be—human or animal, present or future, Harry or…someone who liked Malfoy.”

Harry is so, so in love with Draco. Poor boy(s).

The original Harry Potter series attempted to bridge the awkward divide between middle reader and young adult commercial audiences. This more or less worked during the initial release, because readers grew up alongside the books. Now 20+ years later the weaknesses in the series are more apparent (and frustrating), particularly in the clumsy way they depicted (or not) sex (chest monster? really?) and violence.

Fanfiction authors have done an admirable job bringing a much-needed dose of reality (such that it is in a magical AU) to Rowling’s world. In Azoth@lol-zeitgeistic uses the metaphor of alchemy to catalyze (no pun intended) a deeper investigation into the psychology of adolescence than the canonical books give us. Even wizard teenagers struggle to answer the question, Who am I?

Azoth is about growing apart and coming together. About how friendships change as we age. About grief and reconciliation. Such a well-constructed and beautifully written story about transformation and transmutation deserves all of its readers’ love. Remains consistently one of my all-time favorite Drarry fics. (Bonus: Amazing Hermione/Millicent Bulstrode pairing – hell, yeah!)

May I suggest: Pairing with My Little Berserker by Aelys_Althea, another 8th Year story that expands on Rowling’s world and in which Harry and Draco (attempt to) work together on a magical project.
