Warning - I don’t care if you ship Sasusaku, Narusaku, Narusasu, or Naruhina this post is gonna hurt. It’s long - but that’s because it is addressing something that has been going on a long time.
So, the fandom, myself included, have been giving Sakura Haruno a lot of sh** for her “two and a half minute” date with Sasuke.
But I’ve been rereading the series - and a realization slowly dawned on me. A realization that Sakura Haruno - one of my most hated characters - might in fact be one of the most tragic characters in all of fiction.
Now, if you’re out of the loop, the “two and a half minute” date meme comes from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 17. Ino takes Sakura to where she had her first date with Sasuke.
Sakura remarks, with a wistful smile, that the date only lasted two and a half minutes.
Now, many people view the above as Studio Pierrot being “biased” against Sasusaku. That since the above episode is anime original, that it’s just Studio Pierrot crapping all over Sakura and Sasuke because they dislike the characters. I fundamentally disagree with this view. There’s many reasons i disagree with this view - the notion of an entire studio disliking a character is absurd and childish, Sumire was an anime original character but she is appearing in the manga as well - Boruto had a movie before the manga proper started - but the main reason I disagree with this view is because I think the shortness of the date - along with other visual elements - hints towards a plot that has been going on since the very beginning of Naruto as a series
So before we ask “what significance does two and a half minutes have?”, let’s examine where Sakura sits when she “reminisces” about her date.
From behind, Sakura sits on the left side of the bench. Now, remember - she’s reminiscing about her first date with Sasuke here. Try and figure out what’s wrong with the above picture - specifically, the problem with Sakura sitting on the left side of the bench. Give up? Well, remember, this is supposed to be Sakura and Sasuke’s first date. Sakure and Sasuke do not begin dating until chapter 700. With the above in mind - that the first date is sometime after chapter 699 - and with Sakura sitting where she sits - there’s something she and Sasuke cannot do.
If Sakura sat on the right side of the bench - then Sasuke would have to sit on the left. To hold hands, Sakura would have to hold out her right hand - and Sasuke his left. But Sasuke can’t do that.
He lost his left hand in his fight with Naruto in chapter 699.
So what’s going on? Is the evil Studio Pierrot painting Sasuke and Sakura as so clumsy as to not sit properly to hold hands?
No, I don’t think so. But before you write off Sakura’s placement on the left side of the bench as a coincidence, remember, Studio Pierrot has been very persistent about Sasuke’s missing left hand. In the second ED, Sayonara Moon Town, Sarada reaches for Sasuke’s left hand - which of course isn’t there.
The imagery here is obvious - Sarada doesn’t know her father well enough to know he is missing his left hand. But there’s more left hand imagery in the ED than that.
Specifically, towards the end. Sarada sees a blurry picture of her mother and her father holding her hands - with Sasuke using his left right hand. But when Sarada puts her glasses on - the image is revealed for the fake it is. Just as Sasuke never held Sarada with his left hand, Sarada’s family was never truly united.
There’s a lot to say about Sarada - she is in my opinion the most interesting character in Boruto by a mile. But this post is about Sakura - and about understanding Sakura’s dilemma - Sakura’s tragedy. I will not mince words to appease the concerns of shippers - what Sakura Haruno faces transcends OTPs and petty shipping.
So I’ve been saying that I do not think Studio Pierrot is biased against Sasusaku. I stand by that statement 100%. However, I do think Studio Pierrot portrays Sasusaku for what it is - a broken marriage.
Primarily, it is Sasuke’s absence that causes the Uchiha family stress - but ultimately, it is Sasuke’s lack of communication that hints towards broader problems. Sasuke leaves Konoha, Sakura, and Sarada to investigate the Moon People. 80% of his missions take place in locations where cell phones do not work. In a healthy marriage - you’d expect Sasuke to still vist and contact Sakura and Sarada once in a while - but in the show…
For those who think Studio Pierrot is the devil, note that in the manga Gaiden story written by Kishimoto, Sarada never met her father once either - and in terms of letters, keepsakes, and momentos, all Sarada and Sakura have are a pair of glasses, and a picture.
Now, I am not trying to demonize Sasuke - or any character. But what I am doing, and what Studio Pierrot is doing - is humanizing them. Boruto as a series focuses on what happens after the “happy ending” - after the hero achieves his dreams and saves the day.
The easiest thing in the world a sequel can do is rehash the first story. It’s a rather simple fanfic level of writing a bad sequel strives for - all the characters from the first series marry, have kids, and are completely content for the rest of their lives, as their carbon copy kids retrace their steps.
Boruto is not a bad sequel. Boruto is an extremely good sequel - because Boruto takes risks - and realistically appraises what happens after the end.
For example - what happens to the dango obsessed badass fighting ninja after the war is won and peace prevails?
She gets an office job and becomes fat.
What happens when Naruto becomes Hokage like he always dreamed?
He gets swamped with paperwork, and his family life is strained.
So it’s no surprise that when Sakura marries the guy who tried to kill her on multiple occasions, that their married life would be unstable, and unhappy. That Sakura would go into denial, and insist that Sasuke loved her - going into violent mood swings when even the slightest bit of doubt was cast onto that premise. This is Boruto, folks. It is a sequel that takes risks and builds upon the foundation that Naruto laid. It isn’t needlessly dark - but it isn’t unrealistically sappy either.
As I mentioned previously - I hated Sakura for the longest time, because I just could not figure out why she was in love in with Sasuke.
Not only did Sasuke try to kill her -
But he explicitly viewed her as worthless
And has held a low opinion of her since the start.
Even Sasuke seems confused by Sakura’s love for her - and calls it a “fantasy.”
And for the longest time - I agreed with him. I did think Sakura’s love for Sasuke was a fantasy - that her feelings were fake, shallow, worthless.
But that’s not the case at all. Sakura is, in fact, the most genuine character in the series. Her feelings were not wrong. What was wrong with Sakura, were the circumstances that led her to her broken marriage. -And the fantasy she IS trapped in.
So let’s return to Sakura, Ino, and the bench.
Remember what Sakura said - her first date with Sasuke was near a bench, and that the first date only lasted two minutes and thirty seconds.
Can we think of anything from the original series involving Sakura, Sasuke, a bench, and a time limit? Well, rather than a time limit, a reason for the date between Sasuke and Sakura to end prematurely.
I can. The bench isn’t quite the same, but Sakura is sitting on the right side of it. Now, when I say go back to the original series, I mean go back allllllll the way to chapter 3 of Naruto.
You might realize what’s up immediately, but play along. View these events through Sakura’s perspective.
Sakura is bummed. She’s angsting over her appearance - she doesn’t think Sasuke will like her. But her depression fades away as the boy she has a crush on appears - and looks at her with warm eyes.
Sakura fantasizes about Sasuke telling her a cheesy one-liner - and then immediately dismisses it. She’s not a kid. She’s not living in fantasy. But then, miracles of miracles - her fantasy becomes true.
At a time when she was down on herself - Sasuke came over to her - flirted with her - and made her daydreams into reality.
They say a cynic is just a romantic who secretly wants to be proven wrong. And here, Sakura’s cynicism was smashed apart - by a boy with warm eyes.
But just as she leans in to kiss her prince -
Sakura’s encounter with Sasuke must not have lasted long. All said - probably no more than two and a half minutes. But two and a half minutes is a long time for a girl with low self esteem - and for a boy with warm eyes to cheer her up-
But unlike Sakura - we know the truth of her “first date” with Sasuke. We know that the Sasuke with warm eyes was in fact Naruto.
Naruto, immature, and with a crush on Sakura. He disguised himself as Sasuke, and Sakura fell in love with Sasuke. What once was a childish crush became something more - how could it not?
But I don’t think Naruto is aware of the repercussions of his actions. By coming to Sakura when he did - Naruto made Sakura fall in love with a Sasuke that didn’t exist.
A Sasuke with Sasuke’s appearance, but Naruto’s warmth. And for all the bad Sasuke did, Sakura didn’t forget that warmth. She became a romantic - determined to save Sasuke - to save the boy that saved her.
But Sakura was never told that the Sasuke she fell in love with was Sasuke dressed up as Naruto. That isn’t to say she oblivious. Read the following - and consider the implications of Sakura switching from talking about Naruto in the third person, to addressing Naruto in the second person.
See? She starts talking about Naruto in the third person - but then turns to “Sasuke”, and says “All I want is for you to acknowledge me.”
Sakura is no dummy - and one thing established from the start is that Naruto is good at transformation jutsu. She seems to have her suspicion the Sasuke she sees is Naruto - but she doesn’t seem to really mind who the boy with warm eyes is. Such warmness and emotional honestly causes Naruto to understand his crush on her.
But Sakura is left without closure. And when she sees Sasuke’s heroism on Team 9 - it begins to make more and more sense to her that she is in fact in love with Sasuke.
Even when Sasuke turns evil - and attempts to kill her, Sakura is determined to save him. Or as Kakashi puts it…
But Sakura’s doubt - or perhaps her search for the boy she fell in love with - it does come up again. This time in Shippuden. When she confesses her love to Naruto.
Her confession is clumsy, and awkward. She has to explain why she doesn’t love Sasuke anymore - and it all sounds terribly unconvincing.
But then she says this.
“I realized… who you really are.”
It is snowing when Sakura confesses. Snow equates to love in Japan - and Hinata and Naruto are given plenty time in the snow to showcase their love.
But to all of what Sakura says, Naruto says in return -
“I hate people who lie to themselves!”
It makes sense, from Naruto’s perspective. Sakura has been so desperate to get Sasuke back - and there’s no way someone like her could love someone like him.
But while Naruto remembers all the times Sakura pleaded to save Sasuke, he forgets the time he and her almost kissed by the bench.
He forgets because much like Sakura, he has low self esteem. He can’t imagine someone would love him. Not just a tsundere like Sakura - his future beloved wife needed to confess to him and almost die multiple times before Naruto could get it through his head that he was loved. And speaking of tsunderes - guess what Naruto acts like when he realizes he loves Hinata?
A tsundere. Just like Sakura. There was a time when Sakura loved Naruto, and when Naruto loved Sakura - but due to their low self-esteem, and circumstances beyond their control - along with misunderstandings up the yin-yang, they never got to be a couple. it’s ironic, it’s tragic, and its awful - but I have a strong feeling it’s the truth.
But while Naruto ended up with a wife that loved him, and he loved back - Sakura ended up in an uneasy marriage - one built upon misunderstandings and compromise.
Sasuke felt guilt for his actions - and Sasuke needed to rebuild his clan. As for why he would marry Sakura, well, grim necessity might be a way to describe it.
And why Sakura would marry Sasuke - well - surely, he was the boy she was chasing. Naruto told her not to lie to herself, after all.
And when it comes to her love of Sasuke, Sakura definitely isn’t lying.
I just wanted to vent anonymously for a sec - I was convinced by my girlfriend to watch Voltron and I finished it last night, and I don't understand how it developed this culture of antis at all? There's almost no shippy stuff in Voltron at all. I especially don't understand why I've seen so many people say that kl*nce is a canon m/m couple; they're barely even friends??? How did people convince themselves that they're dating at the end of S3?
the kl@nce fandom has been queerbaiting tumblr into watching vld for the promise of canon gay for over a year now :V it’s incredibly popular and thus widespread, and I’m sure you know how fans talk to each other about their OTPs. I doubt that many kl@nce fans really believe the ship is (currently) canon, but there’s more than a few that really depend on it being VLD endgame.
so far VLD has proven to be pretty close to a true ensemble show and it’s definitely not very shippy in canon.
the relationship dynamic between all the Team Voltron members seems to be Found Family.
the target audiences are preteens and adults with nostalgia for the original Voltron (Defenders of the Universe).
Shiro couldn’t be gone for more than a few episodes because he’s gotta sell toys and by all accounts Dreamworks gets huffy every time an episode passes without a giant robot fight.
It’s going to be all plot, plot, plot from beginning to end, with maybe a (straight) romance or two on the side.*
If there’s been a relationship that’s driven the plot forward more than any other so far, it’s been between Keith and Shiro - Shiro being unwillingly tangled up in the plots of the Galra and Shiro trying to help Keith grow as a leader, and Keith’s strong loyalty to Shiro for Shiro’s past kindness and his struggle with his own growth as a person. but other important, plot-driving relationships have been the one between Allura and her father, Pidge and her brother (and Shiro), and Hunk’s fast friendship with Shay.
Poor Lance and Coran! So far they’ve just been ‘along for the ride’, so to speak, with their personal stakes in the state of the Universe being their affection for the rest of Team Voltron. I think Lance will do some plot driving soon, though. (Coran, I’m afraid, is trapped in the Comic Relief Zone.)
But part of what makes Lance so great is that he’s an everyman. He’s relateable. He’s insecure about himself, competitive, likes to show off, friendly and open, and deeply homesick. I get why he’s so wildly popular and why people exaggerate his angst and minimize his flaws. It’s easy to see yourself in Lance. I know I do. and favorite characters inevitably get shipped the most, and honestly: kl@nce is seen as a rivalship, and rivalships are incredibly, unbelievably popular as a trope. of course Lance gets shipped with Keith constantly.
IMO: kl@nce isn’t actually a rivalship. Lance considers Keith his rival, but Keith shows no particular recognition of Lance that way. Lance frequently provokes Keith in S1 & S2 and Keith reacts when sufficiently irked, rarely ‘starting it’ himself and being civil - friendly, even - when Lance isn’t sniping at him. Lance wants everything Keith seems to (effortlessly!) have, but Keith bears Lance no returning ill will except insomuch as Lance keeps attacking him for what Keith perceives to be no reason. But they do butt heads when Keith gets pissed and have opposing personalities and I know that’s enough for many people.
Now I don’t ship it: rivalships aren’t my thing, and rivalships-that-aren’t-actually-rivalships are even less my thing. I’m sure a kl@nce fan could better tell you why they think kl@nce is a likely endgame. But I can see how people who love the pairing would get a lot of hope from the immediate softening that happened in season 3. Lance did a lot of off-screen growing, it seems: he’s able to put aside his jealousy of Keith to support him post-Shiro’s disappearance, and his decision to respect the Black Lion’s choice and accept that Keith will be leading the team from now on does away almost any reason they had to be antagonistic. Keith responds by warming up to Lance very quickly, and Lance is able to relax into doing what he does even better than before.
But there’s certainly fans who take that fast improvement a lot further than I think canon does.
(I’ll reassess when the main tension in Team Voltron isn’t between Keith and Shiro trying to negotiate their changing relationship dynamic as Keith rotates to leadership and Shiro wrestles his PTSD and injured self-worth.)
*I know the creative team mentioned wanting to have queer representation on the show but I will be quite shocked if it’s she1th or kl@nce. The show is rated TVY7 & the relationship focus is on found family, not romance; conservative parents are very sensitive to their kids being exposed to LGBT content ‘too early’; this isn’t the same directors as LoK, and both DW and Netflix aren’t especially ready to stick their necks out for queer rep. I’m betting on some side characters getting a nod or Coran alluding to a boyfriend back in the day or something.
Why 686 was the final nail in the IchiOri coffin...
I remember after I read the chapter all I felt was eerily fine. That’s fucking crazy cuz as a shipper, I was “supposedly” defeated. The evidence of a big-eyed, incest-looking babyLITERALLYstaring me in the fucking face should’ve made me feel depressed as fuck but it didn’t. No lie, reading it the first time hurt like a bitch, the fact that Ichigo literally laid down and fucked her with those half-assed feelings of his made me sick, but even so I never felt like I lost and I couldn’t figure out why. What makes Ichiruki so great that it defies a canon where Ichigo knocked up another woman? Well, I’ve been thinking and there are actually a couple of things that point to Ichiruki being the true OTP of Bleach and Ichi//hime as nothing more than a crackship especially with all the evidence from the last chapter.
I’m gonna say this rn. Chapter 686 of Bleach is Kubo’s most subtle way of making Ichiruki canon.
I know, chapters 685 and below made Ichiruki canon but y’all 686 was the icing on the fucking cake. If you looked at my other post, you know I firmly believe that this ending was intended to be bad and I stand by that. You know why because EVERYONE doing OOC things means intent. If everyone was in character and did things that they loved or could be seen doing except Ichiruki then that means that Ichiruki was not the true endgame. In this scenario, there is a happy mold being set for the story that has to be consistent for all of the characters. There can’t be some characters that have good ends and some characters that have bad ends in the same story, they either have to be all relatively good or relatively bad. By the way Bleach ended, Kubo went with the relatively bad ending route which means that Ichiruki can not be together. If they were then that would make them a bad ending for the characters. Think of it as Kubo’s worst case scenario and here’s the thing….it actually makes sense within the context of the story. You know what makes it understandable….Ichigo.
I know I was fucking pissed when I thought that Ichigo gave up on being a Shinigami because he wanted that shitty of a life. I was mad at his decision but I never thought of his reasoning and that’s when I started thinking…..What if Ichigo did it all deliberately.Ywach said that he would find the future where he was most happy and fucking annihilate him, right? So what if Ichigo listened…what if he actually headed his warning and decided to become miserable on purpose…. It would make sense, if he really wanted to make sure Ywach never hurt anybody in the future, he would have to do one thing
….give up his own happiness…
…and like a domino effect, the other nakama, the soul society, everyone followed suit.If Ichigo had left the human world, Orihime would face the fact that her love would never come to be and she probably would have been more ambitious. Ishida and Chad would probably have followed Ichigo’s lead and done things that they truly wanted to do, they also would have felt a greater need to protect people because they want to make up for Ichigo not being there like they did in the fullbring arc. Ishida would have been there for Orihime after she matured and moved on and they probably would be together (Ishida being so alone and isolated felt so intentional in the chapter, especially after all the hinting throughout the manga, I really do believe that Ishihime would be the true happy end where Orihime is finally on the recieving end of love and Ishida being the one to reciprocate her love). On the flipside, Ichigo as a shinigami would keep the Soul Society from returning to its former corruption. He would be able to enforce more change as a Captian or head Captain. He would be able to be by Rukia’s side every single day. He and everyone else would be without a doubt the most happiest they’ve every been. But that couldn’t happen, because Ywach would come back and destroy them all. So Ichigo became our tragic hero, sacrificing himself for the good of everybody.
I think that not only did Ichigo give up his happiness by choice, he did it with reason. This isn’t me reaching or grasping at straws, I do believe that this is not much of a stretch for Ichigo to act this way in the story. The thought of a villian, that broke his sword fucking thrice
despite all his powerups, coming back to destroy everything might’ve been a very valid reason for Ichigo to be OOC and stay where he doesn’t want to be. Furthermore, Kubo has never really been a blunt type of writer (except when it comes to propping Ichiruki). He loves the meta, the beneath-the-surface type of shit, theimpied meanings rather than the spelled out ones. It just makes sense, everything you see in 686 is the bad end that happened because of Ichigo and what does that bad end include……….. Ichi*hime married with a kid.
because of this we can conclude that in no way IH was intended as endgame
With the way Kubo wrote IH, it can’t even be seen as an true endgame ship just based on their interaction alone. Even with my bias and 686 reasoning aside, they are truly just a weak ass ship… and what really gets me is the fact that THERE IS NO FUCKING EXCUSE. Kubo has shown to be more than capable of drawing Rukia sense things about Ichigo, know how to cheer him up, and protect him so why doesn’t he ever do those things for Orihime? Because he doesn’t want to. He always chooses to have Orihime be the selfish one or the clueless one. Even the fucking Ichi//hime conversations are drawn to be less entertaining. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Ichi*hime has been disserviced so many times in this manga that they can’t even be considered a rival ship to Ichiruki.
The bias is just too damn strong against this ship with one of the most famous examples being in the beginning of the HM arc. We all know it. Orihime tries to cheer Ichigo up after he gets his ass kicked and still can’t control his inner hollow. She fails and despairs about not knowing what to do. Rukia shows up ,in the most dramatic way ever, knows immediately that something’s wrong and cheers him up like it’s fuckin child’s play. She does it so damn well that Ichigo’s ass is full out smiling and teases her with ‘You’re really noisy, you know that!’ and that’s the point!Tell me one thing that Orihime has done, that Rukia hasn’t done better……. You know what tell me something Orihime has done, that Rukia hasn’t done at all.…that’s right you can’t. If we really compare Orihime to Rukia, Orihime is just barely as competent as Rukia when it comes to knowing and supporting Ichigo. She is always shown to doubt Ichigo and his abilities, where as Rukia is always shown to have an unbelievably high amount of faith in Ichigo. Orihime claims to love him for five lifetimes, but she is the only person in canon to say that 'I can’t see myself reflected in his eyes.’ and 'It’s really you Kurosaki-kun, because of the long hair I wasn’t sure.“
She couldn’t tell that if he was her love of five lifetimes because his hair was longer?? what kinda shit! not to mention Rukia’s looking at her like she’s stupid And it’s exactly because of little shit like this that IH just doesn’t work as a true endgame ship.
Hell, they don’t even work as a shock factor ship because that would require Bleach to have a good end. They exist as nothing more than a crackship for Kubo to make fun of.
But the ultimate thing that really tells me that this manga was not intended to end with Ichi*hime is the fact there is not ONE moment in the entire fucking manga where Ichigo stops to just acknowledge Orihime.
This was made glaringly clear when I read 686, and I realized that in all the time he’s known her he never truly compliments her strength, never just thinks about her in relation to him or even just in general. He never went “Orihime really treasures her friends and is kind to even her enemies…I’ve never noticed that before…” or “Orihime’s always worrying about me, she should worry about herself more…” or some shit (but then that would require that she actually has character outside of her Ichigo crush). In all of those chapters, no meaningful action was communicated on Ichigo’s part. And again it’s not that Kubo is incapable!! There’s been too many times where he’s made Ichigo think of Rukia, be awed at Rukia’s power, contemplate how her absence affects him, wonder if he can keep up with the speed of the world without her, and think of how kind she is. SO AGAIN THERE IS NO FUCKING EXCUSE FOR WHY KUBO DIDN'T DO A FRACTION OF THE SHIT FOR ICHI/HIME!!!!! Say what you want about the Naru*Hina relationship, Kishi at least had Naruto clearly acknowledge Hinata. Kishi even did it very early on in the Chuunin exams, when Hinata fights Neji. Naruto goes from thinking of Hinata as that weird, shy girl to someone he can actually relate to. Naruto hears her back story and identifies with her being called a failure. He was so fucking moved that he fucking shouts from the stands and cheers her on! And throughout the whole match, his attention is focused solely on her! And when she looks like she’s been defeated, he is the only person to say “No! She’s got some more fight in her!” And when she stands up, he nods and looks so proud of her. And what did he do after Hinata was defeated by Neji, he picked up some of her blood that she coughed up and swears a vow to win in her fucking honor!!!!! Hmm, it almost reminds me of Ichigo SWEARING TO HIS MOTHERFUCKING SOUL TO SAVE RUKIA FROM EXECUTION! Ichigo has never thought as highly of Orihime. Ever.
Ichi//hime’s main argument against Ichiruki is the classic “Orihime is the only one that showed romantic interest in Ichigo.” or “Ichiruki has no romantic development”. Well, the thing that they continue to miss is that surface level, shoujo-type moments are meaninglesswhen compared to the more meaningful aspects of a relationship. You can blush at people you barely know, but you can’t trust them with your life or respect their judgments and opinions.
Just the way Rukia commands his attention whenever she’s in a room…
….or whenever her life is in danger.
How just the sound of her voice can make him focus…
….and stir his emotions…
And it’s that same attentiveness that was so clearly missing from Ichigo in the final chapter when Orihime was concerned. So clearly, like throughout the entire manga, there is only one person who Ichigo completely focuses on.
This is the moment Ichiruki became officially canon. This animated banter with Rukia is canonically the happiest moment of his intentionally unhappy life.
Let me say it again for yall fam…
ICHIRUKI. IS. OFFICIALLY. CANON.
Go on and let that marinate.
Ichiruki has always been one of those ships that say it all without saying anything, and this is no exception…
Edit: I almost forgot…a moment of silence for all the illiterate Origos out there, who will undoubtedly fail to understand how and why this logical explanation makes sense. For those who only understand things when they are spoon-fed to them, this post must be really difficult to read and comprehend.
I honestly feel nothing but pity for you all and your mental health since it prevented you from truly experiencing Bleach the way it was intended to be.
But It’s okay, go back to look at your incest baby Kazui and headcanon a final chapter better yet a whole manga where Ichigo pays more attention to Inoue rather than Rukia. Right now the only thing I’m sorry about is the fact that your ignorance has been rewarded. A good ending would’ve let you down gentler.
I’m currently abroad and didn’t have much time not the right mindset to write anything yet - but I guess I should have, for a chapter like this, over which I’d rejoice over for weeks in normal circumstances.
Women are strong.
And by that I don’t mean necessarily physically strong. But women can and will react and this saga is proving it by the day. I’ll never get over the fact that the only female yonkou - though for a shounen manga a 25% of women involvement is not bad at all - is also the dumbest. The fact that Streusen manipulated quite probably from day one, the fact that she loses her temper to fits of rage. It’s not something I appreciate. They fail to give depth to the character - hell, Señor Pink had a better development.
But Big Mom is not the only female character in this saga who, for the better or worse, changes things.
One day I should really reflect on how I went from hating to her to loving her as I do, and shipping her with my other disliked character, Sanji. But that’s for another post. What is easy to see now is how we went from Punk Hazard Nami who declares, though jokingly, yes, that she’s not afraid of an enemy who’s running away, to last chapter when she submitted - I hoped for longer - the pet of a yonkou to her will, to, well, the magnificence of this:
Oh, and not minding Sanji holding her as he is and him not going all heart-eyes over it, but that’s too for another post.
Nami is not strong. She’s not physically strong, she’s not a man, to begin with. Keep in mind that Oda was that guy who never tried to sell the “but women can be just as strong as men”, at the very beginning of the manga, with Kuina. I practiced kick-boxing, I was even pretty good at it. I stood a chance against most female opponents, and men, of approx my size and height. But when I faced a taller male opponent - which often happened, as I’m not super tall -, and such, heavier, I hold much less chances. It’s natural. And Nami is a woman who is not a fighter, so she stands even less chances. But she’s smart and that in the end fills the gap. She didn’t use her charisma or her strength, she used her brains. And despite criticizing Oda repeatedly for often putting women on the wrong pedestal, it’s worth mentioning that some of the smartest characters in OP, her, and Robin, are women. I always wondered, how can they defeat Mama? They can’t. Not now, at least. They can slow her down. But to even do it physically would be impossible, Luffy showed it a couple of chapters ago trying to punch her back.
But what’s more surprising is the courage. Had you been Nami, would you have gone? I for sure can’t tell. One of the four most dangerous people in the world? But she did. She always pushed the others forward, even. Just in Dressrosa, two sagas ago, she even refused to get off the ship.
How should I feel about you?,Charlotte Pudding
This character’s a mistery. She had that bit of a tendency of standing in the way of my otp - though not really, not anymore, I could never see Sanji returning her feelings. Ever. - and tried to kill him and his crew multiple times, but I like her. Like for characters like Doffy, you have to admit they’re psycho b*****s and that you like precisely for that. Her ever representation, and the way that even after she’s confessed her intentions we can’t quite tell what she’s thinking, make her interesting. And one can’t deny that, again despite not being a fighter in the strict sense of the word, she was vital to this saga, for the worse, so far.
Now she loves Sanji, apparently. Truly, because he treated her like a decent human being - though she’s not - and not a weapon/freak for the first time. But her feelings for him are a mess, currently, intertwined with the confusion of the current situation and the fact she, as he said, is lying to herself. She may like him and as such want to save him, but she’s also, in her own way, wicked, and can’t stand see him holding another woman.
A woman who she knows tried her best to save him- so from an external pov like hers it’s not difficult to imagine they might be in love. And along with that, he envies his bonds, with the other members of the crew, bonds of trust and friendship that spell “family” more than her blood family ever did.
Call me a fanatic shipper, but it’s difficult to ignore that she’s getting angry here specifically because Sanji is holding Nami.
The point is: for better or worse, Pudding was and is central in this saga. Despite not ever being a fighter. You may like her or not, but one gotta appreciate when Oda gives women a chance to shine.
All the others: the Charlotte matriarchs
Starting from Mama herself, on whom rivers of words have been written - and unfortunately not much more, since her development is what is - , the Charlotte family doesn’t grow thin on female key figures. Lola, of course, before we even knew anything about her lineage, Smoothie, who’s freakingly scary, Amande, Galette, who are all fighters, and fight not in any way less brutally that their male counterparts - hello, Katakuri; but also those who are not, like Chiffon, and, I’d like to point out, not even pretty, who still refuse to stand idly by. In particular her: her goodbye with Bege was quite moving. She’s a mother, she’s not supposed to leave, but she did, to ensure that something good happens. She’s not cold-hearted and scheming, though that doesn’t mean she’s good altogether: she still wanted her mother dead. And her reason for it was one of the most common in OP: abuse. But how good is it that she managed to escape that situation and find happiness again though in an arranged marriage?
Women in manga don’t have to be just pretty, can we all agree on that? But they surely also don’t have to be just “good”. They’re supposed to be in every way as admirable and despicable as males could be, and receive the same reaction for it: that’s equality.
There are still some good ones thoughReiju, Sora
To spend more words on Sora is unfortunately quite useless: she was good to a fault. That’s pretty much it. And yeah, she was the umpteenth abused mother in OP, which doesn’t make her less interesting, but overall less relevant. I don’t think we’ll see much more of her: but precisely as an abused mother in OP, her inner strenght are what echo here. Mothers who went that far to protect their children: Otohime, Belle-mère, Portgas D. Rouge. And it’s also curious how heavily Sanji’s circumstances echo with Ace’s: Luffy was about to lose him to a self-sacrifice, like it happened for Ace; both Ace and Sanji grew up from a childhood of spite to find people who loved despite, or for, what they are; and both their mothers gave their lives for them. I think here Luffy’s journey of saving was supposed to be the redemption for Marineford: he stated it wouldn’t happen again, and it didn’t.
Then, Reiju. She didn’t appear in this chapter but for what the issue is, it’s difficult to forget about her.
Everybody, both here and in the Japan, as she proved swiftly introducing herself in the top 20 of popularity. But what shouldn’t be understated about her is that she too isn’t perfect: she stated to have “committed terrible deeds”, and she too is a victim of her father’s manipulation and ambitions.
The point about women in this saga is that they are not supped to be pretty or caring or good anymore. They can be that, the opposite, and most importantly, various shades of that.
A bit late and well, general, cause I’m abroad right now and have too much on my mind. But in a normal occasion this would a chapter I’d celebrate over for weeks, so here goes. Besides, the app now allows me to format, and this makes so much more excited that is should.
Reiju is just that. Her goodness - and good looks - obviously stand in first place, but that’s not all there is about her. And she, like Sanji - they truly are siblings - was ready to pay for it.
So. A women’s honour. Women can be good and can be faulty, can be pretty and can be ugly, but can, most of all, not be just that. Not a hype chapter, that’s for sure. But really appreciable on the long run.
Olicity heaven (with a bit of hell in the last 4 minutes)
It’s official, season 5 of Arrow has started! It’s a shame the season is so short (starting at 5x17 for some reason. Weird) but I’m enjoying it so far!
I’m only slightly kidding. There was very little about the previous 16 episodes of the show that remotely interested me, and I doubt I’ll ever watch them in full; I saw all the ‘best’ parts in gif-form and short clips and that will do as far as I’m concerned. And you may think that disqualifies me from giving my opinion on the final 7 episodes of the season…but I’m going to anyway. Because what I have to say about 5x20 really only concerns one aspect of the show.
This episode was amazing for us shippers. So many wonderful moments. And a few terrible ones as well, but I’ll save them for last, lest I be accused of harshing people’s buzz or being overly negative.
So first, the positives.
This is gonna be nothing groundbreaking. You’ve all seen the episode; you’ve posted and reblogged and tweeted the gifs, with all the appropriate accompanying squeeing. But let me break down my favs:
Hey there :) I'm sorry that you're angry and upset but where exactly is CC queerbaiting? They never advertised it as "Scorbus" (don't know how I can express this) if I recall correctly or what exactly are you upset about?
Oh anon, Oh, I’m glad you asked.
Queerbaiting: the perceived attempt by canon creators to woo queer fans but with no intention of actually showing a gay relationship.
Still, it’s more heteronormativity than queerbaiting that frustrated me, I will admit.
To begin with, I’ll have you know, I’d never even given Scorbus a thought before I read CC (a small lie, I’d heard of it, just didn’t like the idea). Hell, I loved the idea of Scorose. And then, I read the book.
So, no, I’m not being partial, not favoring queer relationships. I even tried to not ship it, you know, because I love drarry which makes shipping their sons a bit strange to say the least.
I would have been happy enough with Scorose, it had OTP potential for me. But either J.K. / Jack Throne do not know how to portray romantic relationships –-or the billions of fans that read/watched CC have the wrong perception of reality.
You know which it is? Neither. Because the love – love that exceeds the friendship criteria – between Albus and Scorpius is clear as day to the most oblivious of people.
Anon, this is not to say that they don’t share the most profound friendship – that is undeniable; they share the same mutual affection and adoration like that of the marauders, and that is the greatest praise any friendship can receive. They are best friends before they are lovers, but they are lovers all the same.
If Scorpius had identified with the female gender, everyone – everyone would have been certain they’d end up together – as I believe someone has already mentioned earlier. But why didn’t they end up together, despite the fact that each of their interactions holds romantic connotations? Because they’re both guys, duh. Figures. Haha, they got us yet again. Surprisingly enough.
Yes, they didn’t advertise the book with “Scorbus”, so to speak – of course they didn’t. They’d lose their audience if they did that! (do note the sarcasm) But they queerbaited fans who had already started reading the book or watching the play into thinking that there was a possibility of a queer relationship between two leading characters and perhaps – perhaps, at long last, it didn’t matter enough to be publicized, or rather, for the audience to be “warned” about - that two boys falling in love wasn’t abnormal or anything out of the ordinary. Ha, I wonder when it will be logical enough for us to think like that. By the pace at which we’re going, not anytime soon.
I do not want to be one of those people who replies rudely to someone who was just curious, but the fact that the question you asked had to be asked is proof enough of how unseen the lgbtq+ community is in mainstream, popular media. So unseen that people don’t realize when people of seemingly the same sex fall in love – or, you know, stay in love – right before them.
See, personally, I’m not someone who speaks out about these things often, or even really pays heed to them. But I feel like this was the last straw, this time people had crossed the line.
Rose and Scorpius have next to no chemistry, and let’s be real, their relationship existed only to reiterate the fact that Scorpius was into girls. (As if) for fuck’s sake, Scorpius gave up a kingdom to just have Albus with him, and Scorpius was Albus’s ‘weakness’, in Delphi’s indirect words, and ‘all that he needed’, in his own. I’m not even going to get into all that ridiculous and heteronormative Albus-has-a-crush-on-Delphi thing because honestly, it doesn’t deserve my time. And my time isn’t even that precious.
There was so much build-up, so much – plainness of romantic feelings, that I doubt even homophobes would have been surprised if there had been, after all, a long due Scorbus kiss. I realize that this wouldn’t have gone down well with some more – uh, conventional people, but I am 100% sure that no one would have been surprised. Well, for any other reason than an actual gay couple existing. On the big, not especially “gay-themed” screen.
Also, this is hardly the first time J.k. has done something like this. I know she’s seen as this great, wonderful celebrity who is a prominent lgbtq+ ally, but really, I just don’t see it. She’s all talk, all offense. She has never once taken any opportunity – and she’s had quite a few – to maybe add even negligible lgbtq+ representation to her writing. There was that time with Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, where, when people started catching on, she KILLED one of them off and got the other married off to some random young chick who had had no chemistry with him whatsoever in the past because, you guessed it, everyone is heterosexual and don’t anyone dare get the wrong idea and stop reading her damn books. Oh, and that time with Seamus Finnigan and Dean Thomas when she’d totally intended for them to fall in love but alas, it would take too much fucking “attention away from the plot”. And that other time with Draco and Harry, or Luna and Ginny, or Teddy and James, or ANYONE who had more chemistry with someone from the same gender than with whoever the fuck they actually heterosexually ended up with. Even Grindelwald and fucking Dumbledore.
If it still doesn’t make sense, try thinking of everything Albus and Scorpius did with and said to each other as if they were saying it to or doing it with someone from the other gender. See it? Looks like a bunch of cliché, heterosexual romantic novel tropes, doesn’t it?
So there you have it – I could go on, but my time isn’t that not-precious. And do forgive me, anon, I’m aware you were just asking. This rant wasn’t intended for you. I’m just angry. Sorry.
Aaand here we are! I was supposed to get done with this sooner, but got caught up losing it with the most amazing gifts, a couple of which I have reblogged here too because they need to be seen. I had a great birthday and was sucessfully killed with overjoy by my friends!
Before we get started, just letting you know I’m sorry there was still no update this weekend- last week was finally my last exams week for now until next month, but was busy with birthday stuff and prioritized working on commissions. I’ll try to get the blog back to activity this saturday! Thanks for being patient!
Now for the munday asks!
And we’re off to a great start!
(p.s. there’s Katsuyami hcs under the cut so you might want to check that out!)
Before you read on, this is NOT and attack and I’m NOT starting a war. You can of course, freely state your opinion like I stated mine if you wish.
I’ve been wanting to make this post for a while now and I finally got the chance.
Is your otp really your otp? that’s a weird question, right?
Let’s look at the definition of ‘otp’ first: One True Pairing. Meaning your favorite combination of characters in a fandom.
Or something like that anyway.
I realise that in my fandom (Naruto) most people have watched it from a very young age. Most of us including myself grew up shipping the standard ships a.k.a SasuSaku and NaruHina.
And there’s nothing wrong with that really.
But I feel like for some of us, they were forced to, or should I say, scared of considering other pairs. And you know what, they have every right to because it’s known for a fact that there are many assholes and disrespectful people in this fandom (unfortunately).
The canon ships are SasuSaku, NaruHina, SaiIno and ShikaTema
But I think you all need to be reminded that just because it’s canon, you don’t need to approve of it. or follow it. or like it (as you can follow it, ship it or like it. it’s your choice).
Allow yourself to criticise these ships (and any other ship for the matter), to see their weaknesses and imperfections.
This might sound silly because doesn’t everyone know this already? That you can ship whichever pairing?
No, actually, not everyone does. How do I know? I was one of them.
I grew up ‘shipping’ the canon ships because everyone ships those right?!! Because they’re the actual thing! Because fairy-tales and whatnot. (note the sarcasm)
I remember when I first stumbled upon KakaSaku and was like, holy shit I never considered this, this is amazing (same thing happened to me with NaruSasu and GenIno but lets stick to KS as an example). It took a few months to become a hardcore KS shipper. To be honest, I was scared, like don’t fall for this ship, they’re not canon, just stick with SasuSaku they’re cute.
I think it’s safe to assume there’s at least one person like me out there thus why this post exists.
And here’s the thing! That’s not how it should be, you don’t need to stick with canon.
Don’t ignore the imperfects of the canon ship, allow yourself to spot them and think about them.
I always said SasuSaku were perfect and turned a blind eye onto all their imperfects because they’re canon but that’s the farthest away possible from the truth. In reality, I think it’s a really fucked up ship.
If you think about it, at first, yes they were cute, because even though he’s a bit of an asshole, he cared for his team and for Sakura. But when he left it all went downhill. He tried to kill her multiple times, he rejected her feelings multiple times (and even tho he did it harshly, he does have the right to speak of his feelings, he doesn’t love her and he shouldn’t have to, she can’t force him.) He was absent from her life for years and particularly between the ages of 13 and 17, this a period where you change the most. This is when you grow a personality. There’s no way you could actually ignore everything he did and go back straight away to being best friends. Actually, if we use it as a real life example, you can’t have barely any interaction with someone and have them constantly hurt you and still be in love with them. I know this because I’ve been in a similar situation as Sakura where my childhood crush and first love was harsh and mean and dare I say abusive to me. I did love him for years after that but he left and I didn’t see him for long. I moved on. I started to think seriously about how shitty he is. This is how feelings work. I began to hate him for all the shit he did to me.
How will you ever feel safe living with someone who once tried to kill you? it makes zero sense to me.
Besides, it wasn’t like Sakura actually had any thoughts behind loving Sasuke, she was a child who one day decided to make Sasuke their crush. Mostly because he’s cool. There is nothing wrong with that really, but it leaves many plot holes and unexplained things.
I allowed myself to question these things. How is my ship ‘perfect’ when all they did is hurt each other? How is being a single mother to a little girl whose father is always absent and doesn’t recognise her perfect?
And before someone jumps and says he’s away to protect them, whatever his reason is, it doesn’t change the reality of the situation. He doesn’t recognise his daughter. He doesn’t visit them or keep in touch with them. If he truly loved them he’d find a way to communicate the way he found a way to keep Naruto updated. Or at least found out from Naruto if they’re doing okay. Showed in any way that he cared.
People who truly love each other would go lengths to show it, to be there, to care and if you don’t think so then I don’t think you’ve ever experienced true love.
That said, this is NOT a post to convince you that SasuSaku sucks, this is my experience with it. I’m using them as an example, NOT to attack their shippers.
You don’t have to agree with me and I don’t need to agree with you. We’re all entitled to our own opinion.
As someone who claimed to be a hardcore SasuSaku shipper, it was difficult and scary for me to acknowledge these things. My Tumblr started as an SS blog after all.
And I made this post to let you know not to be so, that when you do acknowledge a ship’s flaws and imperfections next to their good aspects, you begin to realise truly if you like them or not. I repeat, this applies to every canon ship, SasuSaku is JUST an example.
I still ship SasuSaku, but the fan fiction SasuSaku, the one with plot and feelings. Canon SasuSaku makes me feel sick to my stomach.Ithink it makes Sasuke a bigger asshole and Sakura a pathetic person and I hate it. (I’m not saying you should too, this is just MY opinion. The canon ship makes me feel bad and leaves a bad taste.)
So maybe be brave and give yourself the chance to think about this. Even if you personally believe there’s no way you’ll ever stop shipping your ship, don’t be scared of allowing yourself to think and criticise and like new things. Do take the time to think about it; this will either help you discover you don’t in fact like this ship as much as you thought or confirm that they’re indeed your otp. So no harm done, really.
Don’t be scared of the assholes of this fandom who’d try to bully you or make you feel bad. You’ll most probably have your ship’s fandom, they will be there for you.
Lastly, from my experience, KakaSaku pair aside, I can truly say that their fandom has the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met in my life and I swear joining this fandom has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only are they super sweet but also super talented and chill. They’re a creative bunch who make the best art and write the best fan fiction. I’m blessed there are so many talented people who create amazing content featuring my favorite ship.
whoa, that was long man, if you read the entire thing cheers to your patience. If you’re new in the KS fandom, message me we can fangirl together. If you’re a SasuSaku shipper and were by any chance offended by this, sorry, but this is my opinion. By all means, keep doing you and shipping this pair.
It saddens me to have to do this, but it seems like lately, an unsettling percentage of comments I receive is more upsetting than encouraging, and many of my writer friends are experiencing something similar.
If you have been linked to this post, it probably means you did one of these things, and the person who linked you here wants you to read this.
Three types of comments that writers HATE:
3. BITCHING ABOUT STYLE CHOICES. Responding to any character with “I don’t like that you didn’t make them <insert other sexuality here>” will make the writer upset. Do not tell me you are disappointed that my asexual characters are not interested in sex or that there will be no romance for my aromantic characters. Ace and aro people exist, and they have had enough erasure over the years. Same thing goes for bi characters, pan characters, trans characters, or even straight characters.
For that matter, that goes for characters with disabilities or mental health issues, too. And for gender-, race-, or culture-switched characters. And for threesomes that don’t end in the third character getting dumped and your OTP getting together. These are deliberate stylistic choices that the author made for a reason. It’s not constructive criticism to comment on these, it’s just whining because the fic is different from how you would have written it.
Of course, if the author made a mistake and represented a sexuality/disability/other characteristic poorly, AND you have experience with that characteristic, you might be doing them a favor by pointing it out. Gently. Berating someone never helps.
Also, I have seen writers receive comments that ignore the pairings in the story entirely and instead focus on the commenter’s OTP, even if that OTP does not interact in the story at all. For the love of God, do not do this. I can’t believe I even need to say that.
2. TOP VS. BOTTOM. Any kind of comment criticizing the writer’s choice of who tops or who bottoms is gross. This is particularly prevalent in KPop, which, since it is a real person fandom, makes it particularly gross. The assumption that a person can ONLY top or ONLY bottom because of how they look or act is harmful and wrong. The assumption that you can discern someone’s sexual preferences by watching them perform on a stage is harmful and wrong. You do not know these people in real life, so stop acting like it.
This is different from “I don’t generally like to write/read X person topping/bottoming because of personal preference.” Your personal preference is one thing. Berating or guilting an author because their story does not line up with your personal preference is a completely different thing. Acting like your personal preference is The Law Of The Land and not even recognizing that it is, in fact, your opinion, is ridiculous.
1. “MOAR PLZ!!” This can also manifest as “we want a sequel!” or “is this finished? Awww :( ” or “you know, there’s plenty of material here to make this oneshot into a chaptered fic!” or “when will you be updating this?”, especially when a fic is either a) several years old and clearly abandoned or b) clearly marked complete.
DO. NOT. DO. THIS. It’s demanding, entitled, and it makes the writer feel like shit. Writing is HARD WORK and while you might think a comment like this is complimentary, the writer reads this as your hard work isn’t good enough. Fanfiction is a hobby of which you reap the rewards for free. Writers are not your typing monkeys.
Instead of the above, try this!
Three types of comments that writers LOVE:
3. KEYBOARD SMASH. Written flailing, extended emoticons, and genuine enthusiasm will always make a writer smile. It doesn’t even need to be long, but a comment with genuine praise, even incoherent praise, will mean more than a kudo or an upvote or a pageview.
2. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT. If something stood out to you, tell the author! What was your favorite line? Your favorite moment?
Even better is “I don’t normally read this pairing/kink/setting/genre BUT I really enjoyed this one BECAUSE <insert reasons>.”
1. BOOK REPORTS. My favorite, favorite, FAVORITE comments are the long, complicated, overanalytical, super in-depth ones. This type of comment is not for everyone, and of course you are not required to write a critical thesis, but if you really loved a fic, there’s no better way to show it. You might think you are annoying or freaking out the writer, but trust me, you are making their day.
90% of commenters are wonderful, and 90% of comments are encouraging and helpful to the writer, but it only takes one bad comment to ruin a writer’s day. Please take this as your gentle reminder to treat writers, and their works, with respect.
Since then, I have received a few asks about my feelings on
Takari as they were not featured in my post. There is a very simple explanation
as to why they were not featured in my post and that is because I forgot about
them… OKAY DON’T KILL ME! HEAR ME OUT!!
Can you write jaepil where Wonpil with jae because jae keeps on being mean to him/refusing his affection on camera (and maybe also off camera but idk bout that)
dude anon-sshi real talk; jae is more lenient towards wonpil’s affection if compared to sungjin smh i want to punch some sense to sungjin. anw what i’m saying is, jae openly laughs and mocks wonpil’s affection yet
honestly aksfkjaskjdfa. so i gotta twist the prompt a bit, yeah? tell me if you’ve read this then likes then reblogs lmao.
title: have you no idea that you’re in deep?
rating: G / word count: 1.8k / to celebrate jae’s upcoming birthday this one’s set on their upcoming Vlive “mama’s recipe” thingy / enjoy and comment on AO3 lol.
“everyone, right now we’re picking our teammates,” brian says to the camera to fill in the silence, “by drawing lots. it will be two versus three. so far, we have wonpil and jae-hyung picking two ends painted in red, and sungjin-hyung and dowoon with blue ends. now it’s my turn.”
jaehyung watches as brian, with what little variety show sense he has, carelessly picks the last lot with a loud exclaim. his end is painted in blue. sometimes, life just works in ways that jaehyung isn’t a big fan of.
There’s no better way to start off an appreciation blog than to introduce the character being appreciated, and so I’ve decided to at least get the ball rolling by writing out the stuff I’ve come to learn about my ultimate bias Lord Nobuyuki. Hope this is an enjoyable read!
Tagging my fellow sinster, @books-and-colours because this deep thirst wouldn’t have reached the level it has without her ‘guidance’ ;)
Without further ado, here are my thoughts on Nobucchin!
(This is gonna be very long [and prolly angsty, I’m not gonna lie], but considering the fact that he is my ultimate bias, it’s to be expected. X)
I’ve seen many differing opinions on the finale of SKAM and thought I’d throw my hat in the opinion ring.
First thing you should know is that Even is my favorite character. That doesn’t mean I don’t love and adore Isak too (I really really do) but I connect with Even on such a deep personal level. But this post is me defending my smol butter bean Isak because people are coming for him and Mama Bear ain’t having it.
People are upset with what Isak said in his conversation with Eva about him and Even. There are claims that Isak doesn’t love Even as much as Even loves him. I’ve seen anon after anon harping on the fact that it sounded like Isak has accepted that his relationship won’t last.
Well that is not what I took from it at all.
Eva: “So is he the man of your life?”
Isak: “I don’t know.”
Eva: “He’s not?”
Isak: “Is it important?”
Ironically, I think this is a really important. Isak is not saying that Even is not the man of his life or they are not meant to be together forever. Isak is saying that all that matters, is right now. And right now Isak is deeply in love and committed to Even and their relationship. Isak is doing everything in his power to make sure that him and Even are together and that they are okay. Isak acknowledging that it might not be forever and that it could end at any moment doesn’t take away from that. He’s realising that’s what makes every part of it, good and bad, so beautiful and real. It makes the good great and the bad terrible but it’s worth it.
Pretty words and fluff are great, I am here for it but give me real tangible action any damn day. And that’s what Isak is doing. He’s showing his love and commitment every minute of every day that he is in this with Even. That to me means everything. They are building a beautiful strong foundation for a relationship that could last the distance. So I don’t understand people questioning or doubting Isak’s feelings for Even.
Ummmm, did we watch the same show? Did you see how devastated Isak was when Even called things off and then kissed Sonja? Did you see Isak not sleeping properly? Did you see how depressed he was when Sonja told him Even’s feelings were because of his mania? Did you see Isak crying on the phone to his Dad telling him that things between him and Even were over? Yes, Even told Isak he loved him (via text) and that was amazing but maybe Isak isn’t ready to say it back just yet. And it’s okay if he isn’t. But he sure as shit is showing Even he loves him no matter what, no matter how big the challenge. He’s in it. If that ain’t love, I dont know what is.
I’ve also seen people talking about Isak being controlling when it comes telling Even he can’t have any of his weed because it isn’t good for him. Again I didn’t see it that way, I didn’t see it as controlling behaviour. Isak is acting on what Sonja told him about weed being bad for Even so I understand why he did it. It wasn’t about controlling Even, it was about protecting him. There is definitely a conversation that needs to happen which they couldn’t have at the time because they were in the middle of a party. Maybe neither of them smoke or maybe Even can handle smoking a small amount recreationally. Again, it’s a conversation they need to have.
I did appreciate that Isak used humor to break the tension in the moment. It reminded me a lot of Even earlier in the season when things would get too real or heavy and Isak shut off, Even would break through that Isak’s walls with humor. Never would have thought sucking dicks in the dark and aluminum legs could make me so nostalgic but here we are. Now Isak throws in Even’s Mom hiring him to be Even’s caretaker/boyfriend to break the tension. I thought it was a great throwback/parallel moment.
The reason I think that they are going to be fine is because they fit so perfectly together. Even is the romantic. Everything is big, cinematic and epic. He’s the artist. The filmmaker. The storyteller. Then you have Isak who is the realist. The producer. He loves the concept/story but he’s trying to figure out how to make it a reality. Being with Even forever is a beautiful concept but how do they realistically achieve that? And for Isak that means not thinking/worrying about where they are going to be at the end up in twenty years. For Isak it’s taking everything day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute and dealing with things as they happen. That is extremely smart and mature way to look at a relationship.
And in return Even makes Isak want to be part of that epic story. Whether they get their happily ever after or not. Even makes Isak want to live and love and experience the entire human range of emotions and experiences that Isak has suppressed and avoided for so long trying to hide who he is. They balance each other out so well. They save each other. What a gift. I actually physically hugged my laptop screen after watching the final clip because I was so happy, content and emotional. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but to me it was the epic love story and ending just solidified everything I had felt over the course of the season. I can’t wait for season 4.
Tbh I used to have hope Kagami would make mikayuu canon when I first entered the fandom but after about a year, I realized there was no way it'd happen and we'd only get an open ending. Now? I'm convinced he's going to make Yuu and Shinoa canon and in the worst way possible by fucking up Shinoa's character with the sex for power thing and making Yuu have feelings for her out of nowhere. I wish I didn't care so much, but it makes me feel really nauseous when I think about it...
(same person) I know not being canon isn’t the end of the world, but it still hurts. Sorry for dumping this on you, you don’t have to answer. Hope you have a good day and I really like your posts
Let me take this opportunity to welcome all the new Barisi fans. Now
that the 16th season of SVU is available on Netflix, I’ve been seeing a lot of new
Carisi fans (obviously) but also a lot of people who see the potential
in a Barba/Carisi pairing (somewhat less obviously).
So, in case you’re looking for fic (/understatement), let me rec some stories I’ve enjoyed.
A few notes:
- The list is in random order, and it’s by no means exhaustive (sorry if I’ve left someone out!), but it might still be useful to new shippers.
- I limited my recs to AO3 because I’m lazy and it’s easier for me to find links there, but the Barisi tumblr tag is a treasure trove of awesomeness and I suggest you get scrolling, if you haven’t already.
- I will, however, tag some tumblr users who have fabulous Barisi tags and tons of great stories (not to mention gifs and edits) on their blogs, to get you started:
- Lastly, I’m only reccing 1 fic per author, but you should read all
the Barisi these people have written because it’s legit. And also
because, like, you’re gonna read all the Barisi that exists anyway,
there’s not a lot of it.
Beautiful story. Extremely realistic, it includes a case that’s just perfectly integrated, great dialogue, and great interactions between Sonny and the rest of the squad, with some real world building. Also, a very interesting spin on Sonny and how he goes through life, as well as a warmly sympathetic yet in-character Barba.
This one hits me where I live. It really captures the pairing as I see it. Sweet, dear Sonny being all happy and bubbly and loveable, but not understanding that he is all those things. And Rafael not being quite the hardass workaholic many assume him to be. There’s great insight into Barba in this one, about how he balances his job and his personal life. It’s sweet, fluffy, a little angsty and just lovely.
One of the first stories I ever read for the pairing, and one I really love. A post-December Solstice story (so new viewers might want to watch episode 16x16 first, since it gives poor Barba some backstory). This fic is such a warm fix-it, it’s moving in a realistic, almost matter-of-fact way, and it’s so beautifully descriptive. It really makes you feel what the characters feel.
Hilarious and sexy. The hilarity lies in the fact the set-up is totally over the top, and yet Sonny and Rafael’s reactions are totally in character. The sexiness lies, well, everywhere. Great dialogue, a lot of fun, and a great ‘starter’ fic for new shippers, I think. This author has written a lot for the pairing, so do check them out.
The classic ‘Person A needs a date for a wedding’. Let’s face it, we all like to see the main tropes when it comes to our OTP. The classics are classics for a reason, and this wonderful little story proves it. Sonny is cutely clumsy and Barba is calm and collected, and they talk, and they dance, and they just fit. A feel-good story if there ever was one. For the exact opposite, a feel-terrible story, you might want to try ‘Visit’ by the same author. Or not.
Adorable beyond words. Rafael-centric, in which Rafael is called to babysit Noah. And he gets a little help which he may or may not need. Very in-character, with Sonny being super helpful and eager, and Barba being hilariously grumpy. Great set-up, realistic reactions, a bit of implied pining (which I do love) and an overall lovely story.
Delicious, delicious smut. Which could describe all the stories by this author. This particular story is kinky with a side of feels, and it should fit your needs perfectly if you’re a new shipper of this rare pairing (i.e. you’re looking for all the precious smut you can find). For those who are so inclined, she’s also written some Amarisi (Amaro/Carisi, talk about rare pairings) which is just, yeah.
The first fic I ever wrote. Because I love Sonny, and I wanted to write something longer from his perspective. The jumping-off point is the squad’s less than enthusiastic reactions to Sonny’s input, and the meat of the story details Barba’s subtle encouragement. The story is canon-compliant (if Barba wanting to get into Sonny’s pants can be considered canon-compliant. Which it totally can). It has 2 sequels (and a third one in the making, ahem).
Oh and I hope you all watch this video in HD, just because:
new viewer with good taste and a keen eye for awesome pairings, treat yo self to some Barisi. There isn’t a lot of it out there,
but what is out there is pretty great. Enjoy and, hell, maybe
contribute! That’s how I started, my thirst for more Barisi is what got me writing. Maybe the same will happen to you!

There's no way I would be late – A definite Why I ship Aokise
Back in the day, I loved visiting an LJ community called shipmanifesto. On that community, people would write essays on their OTPs, more or less for the sole purpose of documenting the universal question Why – Why do I ship this? What makes this ship work? What is the cornerstone of their chemistry? I liked reading those essays, because they weren’t about fighting it out which ship was the ~most legit; instead, they gave me insight to people’s reasons for being passionate about a certain dynamic, even if it wasn’t one I was that personally invested in.
Now that season 3 of the Kurobas anime has started, I decided to pull this post from my drafts and finally finish it. Because there have been a number of times when people have literally given me the Why – Why do you ship Aoki? Why would that ship ever work? Why do you think they’d ever theoretically last together? And there’s nothing like a cohesive post to answer those questions on my behalf, instead of having to go through the same song every time.
So, here’s my Aoki ~gospel, based on my interpretation of the characters and their dynamic. Here is Why.
Huge Ass Disclaimer: This is not a post about why any two characters are supposedly better together than any other permutation of characters. This is a post documenting the reasons I love the dynamic of these two characters, and why I feel that their chemistry would also yield a believable, balanced and inspiring relationship – in other words, why it’s my OTP. This is not a post about trying to undermine and derail the ships of others’, nor the only possible interpretation of their characters. It’s an attempt to celebrate and take pride in my own. Please proceed accordingly.
edit @ 22nd of Jan: I put in some additions to clarify on some of my original choices in wording, which can be found with the tag.
Out of the big five, (Nalu, Gruvia, Jerza, Gale, Elfever) which one is your favorite ship and why and least favorite ship and why?
How did you KNOW that I’ve been dying to talk, at great length and in exquisite detail, about my OTP of OTPs for two days?
(I’m glad to be done with my Natsu character development series, because this could span several posts. Consider this reply an introduction.)
My absolute all-time hands-down no-holds-barred favorite Fairy Tail ship is Nalu.
It’s weird saying this about a relationship that includes Natsu, but of all the Big Five, Natsu and Lucy have the most normal relationship. They have so little relationship drama or angst to work through.
She never kidnapped his friend or fought him as an enemy. He never brutalized her and bolted her to a tree. She never petrified his sister and threaten to turn her into rubble. He never killed her friend or tried to sacrifice her to revive a black mage.
And unlike many main character pairings, there was no insta-love between them when they first met. Nor did they have the Han Solo-Princess Leia insta-hate that you know is going to turn to love.
Natsu and Lucy, when they first knew each other, had things that they liked and disliked about the other. Natsu thought Lucy was a nice person, but she could be weird and loud. Lucy thought Natsu’s magic was amazing, but he went totally overboard when he fought, embarrassed her by stuffing his face, and couldn’t seem to make a normal entrance.
And yet there was a spark, however faint, between them even at the start. On whatever impulse, Natsu grabbed Lucy by the hand and brought her to Fairy Tail. She was the first person besides Happy he invited to be on his team. And Lucy trusted in Natsu so much that she threw herself off a frickin’ tower just because she heard his voice and believed he’d be there to catch her.
And he was.
Mashima took his sweet timing developing them. For all the people who are against Nalu because main character pairings are clichéd: it was not at all obvious from the start that Mashima would make Nalu endgame. There were a lot of Loke-Lucy moments in the Loke and Fantasia arcs. Happy even teased Lucy—several times—about her relationship with Loke. Natsu and Erza shared some close moments in Tower of Heaven and in Fantasia.
It wasn’t until Nirvana and then Edolas that you could see a steady progression in Nalu. And Tenrou cemented them as a couple in my mind.
Natsu and Lucy’s relationship has developed oh-so-slowly from strangers to team mates to close friends to the almost-lovers stage they are in now. Their interactions with each other have changed so subtly and so dramatically at the same time.
Do you think Natsu now would be okay if someone petrified Lucy and threatened to turn her into rubble, like Laxus ordered Evergreen to do in Fantasia?
Would Lucy now call Natsu lame, like she did when he was motion-sick on Bora’s yatcht or slipped on the ice in the Vulcan’s (Balkan’s?) cave at Mt. Hakobe?
Natsu and Lucy have smoothed out each other’s rough edges. I love the kindness they show each other, their obvious enjoyment of each other’s company, the way they take care of each other. I love the variety of their interactions: their spats, their teamwork, their sweet moments, the physical aspect of their relationship, the comedy and goofiness.
And I love it when they show how much they care about each other. That Lucy won’t run away by herself and leave him trapped in a rockfall. That Natsu thinks of her as someone “precious”.
I could go into more details about the amazing development Nalu has had. But I’m going to stop now before this gets too long.
My least favorite ship? I don’t have one. I like, enjoy, and support all the rest of the Big Five. I used to be worried about Gruvia, because it was so one-sided, but not any more. Mashima’s handling it well right now.
I love how each of the Big Five ships has its own flavor. No two couples’ interactions are the same. In my opinion, for a shounen mangaka, Mashima does romance very well. It’s one of the reasons I love Fairy Tail so much.
