postapocalyptica

Cleopatra’s Palace at Alexandria, Egypt.  A series of earthquakes over a long period of time is credited for sinking the royal quarters slowly beneath Alexandria harbor.

I’m  fascinated with sunken cities and the concept of impermanence.  How foolish we are to think that the names we give and the lines we draw will ever stand the test of time.

Logan’s Run (1976)

Crystals embedded in their palms gradually turn red over time, alerting citizens of a postapocalyptic society that they must attend “Carousel,” where they will be “reborn.”  Riiiight.  Thirty is the maximum acceptable age in this world, and legends of a sanctuary exists for those wishing to escape Carousel. The movie tells the story of a Sandman (one charged with stopping people from escaping, or “runners” ) who attempts escape.  It stars Michael York, features a cameo by Farrah Fawcett, and has a pretty bad-ass robot scene.  One of my favorite flicks.  Check it out!

We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Maybe a little Styrofoam … The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas!—George Carlin

From NatGeo’s “Doomsday Preppers.”

These people horrify me.  One guy in the photo, yeah he shot his thumb off in a fake EMP bug-out drill with his kids.  I’m all for being prepared and “Organize Before They Rise" is forever my motto, but if truly being prepared for anything means I have to spend a ton of money and run around like a nut, then count me out.  I’ll take my chances unprepared, though I’ll admit I could use more some cardio.
