position players pitching

April 13, 2009
Nick Swisher, who throws 22 pitches, allowing just one hit and one walk before retiring the next three consecutive batters, including a swinging strikeout of Gabe Kapler, becomes the first position player to pitch for the Yankees since Wade Boggs took the mound in 1997. During the 15-5 rout by the Rays at Tampa’s Tropicana Field, the fun-loving Swisher volunteered to pitch the eighth inning to help save the bullpen after starter Chien-Ming Wang lasts only one inning.
