Portsmouth Naval Prison

Sometimes referred to as the “Alcatraz of the East”, the Portsmouth Naval Prison on an island near Portsmouth, NH, was in use from 1908-1974 with a peak in the midst of World War II. Today, the prison has been all but abandoned. Visible from the river, especially to boats passing by, the Portsmouth Naval Prison is an interesting site for those looking to view a piece of Portsmouth history.
