This is a portrait of Le Brun’s daughter, Jeanne Julie Louise, whom she called “Julie.”

Vernet’s daughter had become a beautiful and intelligent girl of about nineteen. It is an academic portrait, painted during the stay of the Vernet family in Italy. In the background are the turrets of the Villa Medici, seat of the French Academy in Rome, an institution Vernet directed between 1829 and 1834, and where gathered French artists when they visited Italy.
