✨ Cleansing in Witchcraft ✨

Cleansing is a way of removing negative or unwanted energies, spirits, and imprints from an object or a space. There are a number of simple rituals and actions that are done to cleanse. You can do as many or as few as you like, and create your own cleansing methods/rituals.

✨ CLEANSING ONESELF

  • Brush your hair, morning
  • Ritual baths
  • Dancing singing
  • Visualization
  • Drinking a tea designed to cleanse

✨ DISCREET METHODS

  • Brush your hair
  • Open the windows, let the new air come in and the old air out
  • Light a candle
  • Playing a song you associate with cleansing
  • Ringing wind chimes
  • Wetting your hands in salt water and flicking the water through the area
  • Visualize light and colors, and manipulate the energy away

✨ OPEN AREA METHODS

  • Ring a bell through an area
  • Smoke cleansing / cense (not smudging)
  • Waft incense smoke around
  • Burn herbs, such as sage, rosemary, bay leaf, etc
  • Spritz lemon-infused water around, or salt water
  • Light a candle
  • Sprinkle salt or eggshell pieces in the windows and doorways
  • Use a besom to clean the negative energies out of the air like cobwebs
  • Wave a branch of a strong-scented herb through the area, such as mint
  • Toss a pinch of salt or herbs in the door ways and window
  • Touch each corner of the room and say a short prayer over each

✨ CLEANSING OBJECTS

  • bury in a salt bath
  • if water-compatible (not soluble, won’t react poorly, etc), let sit in a moon or salt water bath
  • pass through smoke
  • incense
  • rainwater, mist, snow, etc

Felix Felicis -Liquid Luck

A potion to help fate lean in your favor.

Ingredients

A large bowl and a smaller bowl.

Consumable full moon water

One candle

Bay leaves

Rosemary

Sage

Honey

This potion has varying degrees of effectiveness, depending on how far you stray from the directions. Generally, the amount of time and effort put into this potion will be proportional to how much you get out of it.

Method

  1. Prepare your work space however you may like. Cast a circle, charge the surface, call on your gods -anything that you feel is necessary. Feel free to conduct another complimentary ritual before this, using this as the catalyst, or using this alone.*
  2. Place a coin in the center of the large bowl, then the smaller bowl on top of that, and a candle in the smaller bowl. Carve “wealth,” “success,” and “love,” into the candle and anoint with oil (or charge in your favorite way). Light this candle, and make sure it doesn’t run into the bowl.
  3. In the kitchen, bring a cup of full moon water to a boil. NOT rain water. Do not use water that has been left out side, improperly sealed. Once a nice steam is rising, remove the candle from the smaller bowl, and pour the hot water in it’s place.
  4. Take your herbs and place them in the outer ring, between the small bowl and the large bowl. You may also wish to place corresponding crystals, sigils, ect, here. If drinking immediately, drizzle some honey into the water.
  5. When the candle goes out, the potion should be complete. Snuff it out if you’re in a rush. If not using presently, put the water in a jar and keep in a cool, dark place. For best results, drink heated with a teaspoon of honey. Each brew only works for one use, and it is best not to drink this more than once a month, lest it loose its potency. I find rare occasions (in general) tend to supply more power.

* If you really need some luck, something more than just a boost on exams, there’s another crucial part.

Keep a piece of ribbon, rope, or string easily accessible at all times. Keep it with you when your inside, outside, traveling, ect. Whenever something particularly miraculous happens, tie a knot -during the event or immediately after, always in the same location. Upon reaching three knots, you can begin the above potion. At some point during the ceremony, burn the knots with the candle until they unravel. Once the knots have disintegrated, I would recommend drinking the potion as soon as possible.

I've noticed that you mentioned Wiccans a lot. My MC is a witch, and I wasn't really aware of other kinds of witches, even though I did thorough research. What other kinds of witches are there? Just fyi, she is a mostly-closet witch, and uses stones as connections to places. She mostly uses runecasting and entomomancy (especially beetles and spiders). What might she choose to align with, if anything?

There are, honestly, so many more choices than just Wicca. I’ll try to list several, but do not take this as an exhaustive list. I have added resources where I could, and please forgive the length…

I hope this put some things in perspective as to just how large witchcraft is, and why I seem to harp about being frustrated that the majority of what I see is Wicca. It is prevalent and popular, not the only way to be a witch, and definitely not the only tradition.

To answer your question about your character, Some of these paths lend themselves more towards nature than others, but I’d suggest rather looking into a tradition/path, look at types of witchcraft instead. Your character most sounds like a variety of Green Witch, and/or Animal Witch.

Concerning Dark Objects and How to Make Them

These are inspired by the series The Originals. Davina and Kol started making these cursed objects and I liked the concept so now it’s a real witchy thing! I don’t if anyone came up with these yet, but I’ve never seen them around so here ya go!

What are Dark Objects?

Dark objects are basically active enchanted items. Items which you have linked a spell to, and is activated by a trigger set in place by the caster.

Components of a Dark Object:

The Focus: The Focus is the item itself, so a necklace, a ring, or something like that. I personally really like using jewelry as Foci, but that’s just my aesthetic. You could literally use anything, I’ve used a spoon before.

The Source: The Source is the source of power that fuels the item. The simplest one would be to infuse the object with all the energy needed for the spell. You can play with the source to turn it into more of a trigger.

The Trigger: The Trigger is what, well, triggers the spell. I like using a movement, or a small rhyme, as it’s pretty easy, but you could make it so it’s activated when the object is broken, or when a certain person does a certain thing.

The Link: Related to the trigger, this component is optional. It allows to make the use of this item reserved to a certain person.

The Glyph: This is more of a personal thing, but I like to use a glyph with different geometry in it to relate to the spell itself. It helps to redirect the energy into the object, and to govern the energies better. Circles are used to indicate the flow of energy, and to contain energy. Squares are used to represent the four elements, as each corner represents one direction. Lines are used to link different components to each other (more on that in another post). Triangles are used to implement structure and strength to the enchantment. Spirals are used to direct the energy of the Purpose

The Purpose: Basically the herbs and objects you would use for the spell if you weren’t going to use it as a cursed object. I don’t reccomend poppets, or other types of representative magic, due to the fact that it could make a monkey’S paw effect take action, but anything else is good.

How to make a Dark Object:

Making these can take a little bit of planning, of course, but I personally think they’re worth it.

First you want to pick a Focus. I reccomend something related to the spell, and easy to carry with you. Then, decide on the spell you want to put into the Object. Gather your Purpose and make sure you have everything you need. Then you want to design the glyph, if you’re going to use one. I reccomend using one of my chalk recipes depending on what you want to do. You should also decide on what you want your trigger to be. I reccomend a rhyme, rubbing the object, destroying it, or doing a certain movement. You also want to set up anything that you’ll be able to draw power from, like candles, crystal elixirs, music, whatever helps you raise energy.

Trace your glyph out, and set everything up. Place your Purpose on the assigned spots of the glyph, or just throw them in a box. If you’re going to use the glyph, make sure the Purpose is placeed at the end of a spiral going towards the Focus or lines going towards it. If using a glyph, your candles should be used as Purpose, to send power to the Focus. Now, it’s time to start casting.

Write out a contract stating the trigger, and the overall intention of the spell using whichever alphabet you prefer. I like using Ogham or runes, but you can also use regular script. If using a Link, wrap it up in the contract, or smear your blood or the person’s blood unto the word. or phrase stating the trigger. If the Source isn’t physical or premeditated, state what it will be when you need to use the object, for example feelings, or entropic energy. Burn the contract and mix the ashes with water or a brew related to the spell. Anoint the object with the mixture. Now you want to raise energy and direct it into the object. Visualize the object sucking in all the energy of the purpose and the Source, if used. Chant the intention of use of the object, preferably rhyming, and visualizethe use of the object. Act as if you were casting a regular spell, but isntead of sending it into the world, send it into the object so it may act as a vessel.

Using the Dark Object:

You want to carry the object with you for when you use it, obviously. Use your trigger and state the target of the spell. Once cast, the object will probably feel different. Less charged, or lighter even. Once the object has been used, you can reenchant it with the same spell you used, or cleanse it in salt and moonlight for an entire night and use a different spell on it.

Depending on what Source you link to the dark object, for example your feelings, you could probably cast the spell as many times as the Source is powerful enough.

Ideas for Dark Objects:

A pendant used to suddenly make you extremely attractive to all around you.

A bracelet used during a test to remember the answers.

A ring to bring intense luck when gambling.

An earring rubbed to curse that one person who wronged you isntantly.

A knife with storms as Source used to cut the clouds and make the sun shine.

The possibilities are endless! Have fun with it :)

Some Marks from The Shadowhunter’s Codex. Possibly use for some pop culture witchcraft? They’re “drawn” onto one’s skin in the books so using them like that would be p cool! Posting mostly for personal reference

Patronus Glyphs: Bat

This is the first of a new series I’ll be working on and experimenting with!

Similar to sigils but also much like servitors, these glyphs can be used in a variety of ways. Your “patronus” doesn’t have to be this animal for you to use it, but it’s best if you either have a tie to it, it makes you happy, or its particular brand of magic will be useful in what you’re trying to achieve.

***

How to use as a patronus:

*For banishing negative thoughts and emotions and chasing away depression*

-Focus your eyes on the image.

-Bring to mind your happiest memory, and hold it there. Imagine as you do that you are being filled with a sensation of warmth and/or a bright glow as the memory fills your awareness

-Once you feel you’ve been fully imbued with the light/warmth of your memory, touch or point to the patronus glyph and say, whisper, or think “expecto patronum” or whatever other activating phrase resonates with you.

-Imagine the patronus glowing, flaring to life, and physically chasing away your negative emotions (which could be visualized as dementors, if it helps).

***

Another way to use this glyph is to invoke it as a magical servitor or a familiar, in which case choose whatever activation method you prefer, or use the previously described steps but replace visualizing your happiest memory with visualizing your intent, and your servitor being fed and empowered by carrying it out.

***

Some things bat magic is good for:

-family bonding

-sending messages between planes

-percieving things beyond the veil

-finding things in dark places

-good luck and fortune

-transformation

-facing your fears

-general communication

Call upon cosmic familiars

A cosmic or celestial familiar could be: stars, planets, nebulae, constellations, essentially any cosmic object you feel helps guide you. It could be anything you want, including the little Pokemon, Cosmog here.

This spell is to either help you find your familiar or strengths your bond with them. All you need is a pen, paper and clear quartz.

🌌 Write your intention on a piece of paper. Here is an invocation I use:

Creature of cosmos,
Calling supernovae and star nurseries
May my cosmic companion find me
Stay by my side and guide me

🌌 As you write, repeat the words in your head or allowed and continue to do so through out the night.

🌌 Wrap the paper around a clear quartz (any blue or purple crystal should suffice).

🌌 Place it outside over night under the stars, preferably on the night of a new moon.

🌌 Over night your familiar will hear the call you’ve made and reveal itself to you. This could be in a dream or a feeling you have throughout the day.

Make New Friends (And Keep the Old) Spell

This spell is inspired by the old song Make New Friends, commonly sung in Girl Scout’s. The purpose of the spell is to encourage new, strong friendships to enter your life and to strengthen and deepen your current friendships.

Ingredients

-1 silver (or gray) candle

-1 gold (or yellow) candle

-Silver Thread

-Gold Thread

-Gold coin (I used a Sacagawea gold dollar but any gold coin will work)

-Silver coin (I used a quarter)

Steps

1. Take an equal length of gold and silver thread. Place them both curving so they create a circle. Sing or say the first verse

Make new friends,

but keep the old.

One is silver,

the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That’s how long,
I will be your friend.

2. Light both of the candles and place them in the middle of the thread circle. Let them both burn down a little bit to create wax. Sing or say the second verse

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We’ve been friends,
from the very start.

3. Place the gold coin in your right hand and the silver coin in your left and sing or say the third verse.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

4. Take each of the candles and pour a little bit of the wax on each of the coins. Place the coins together while the wax is still wet. Use the threads to tie the coins together. You can use knot magic for this part if you wish. Afterwards, hold the coins together and sing or say the final verse.

Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.

You help me,
and I’ll help you
and together
we will see it through.

5. Carry the charm with you. You should see an increase in friendly people and possible friendships and hear from your current friends more often

Not sure why I feel such a strong need to say this NOW but:

Magic doesn’t come from herbs or symbols. It doesn’t come from semi-precious stones or funky colored candles.

Non-witches use those things all the time, sometimes on a daily basis, and never really do magic using them.

Someone who doesn’t BELIEVE in the healing properties of Rose Quartz won’t benefit from them. Someone who doesn’t believe that burning a green candle can bring luck and money won’t draw those things to themselves by burning a green candle.

The magic comes from YOU. Your belief in those things is what allows them to work. Herbs, fancy candles, stones – those are all conduits and boosts for your own, innate magical power.

Do certain herbs and stones have innate power? Yes, I believe that they do. Certain days have power, certain phases of the moon have power. Not necessarily because I believe those things (aside from the astronomical/cosmological stuff like eclipses, solstices etc.,) have innate power, but because many people, over a long period of time, have believed that those things have that specific power.

However, I also feel that YOUR personal associations with a plant, stone, color etc., can override those because YOU are the one doing the magic. It is YOUR ENERGY being channeled through that particular conduit, after all. How could it NOT have some effect on the way the magic works?

Button Eyes

Curse

“Blind” your subject, so they no longer wish to spy upon you. This spell is a tad bit aggressive, so I am going to label it as a curse. It is based upon the Coraline book/movie.

What You’ll Need~

  • 2 buttons (Black is traditional)
  • A Needle
  • Thread (Red or Black)
  • Cloth/Paper

Procedure~

  1. Write victim’s name on the paper/cloth. Better yet, draw them, or just their face.
  2. Say (or think with intent) “Twitchy witchy little brat, with buttons on each eye, stick a needle through each hole and no longer shall they spy.”
  3. Sew on the buttons. If you drew the person/their face, preferably sew it over their eyes.
  4. Done!!!
