The Huntington Beach Summer Classic was pretty awesome for me. Tavi and I won Champs of the Low Junior/AO Jumpers and competed in our first High Junior/AO Jumper Classic finishing second. But this weekend was special because while I was at the show getting ready for my High Junior class my oldest friend and barn mate Stephanie Don was competing at the National Pony Jumper Finals in Kentucky. She rode anchor for her team and won the silver medal and for the Individual Final she was the Reserve National Pony Jumper Champion!! It really hit home to me that while I was having some of the biggest moments of my career so was she! And, our trainers Caroline Sterckx and David Sterckx have really brought us both up. A little groom appreciation moment here too, my groom Jose Urzua has worked with the best Grand Prix riders on the West Coast. He always makes me and my horse look amazing and cares for my horse so, so well. He treats me like a Grand Prix rider every day and I am so thankful for that. He was as much by my side this week as my parents and my trainer. He said, “Don’t worry Sophie. 1.40M is just like 1.30M.” Well almost. It takes a village to do this and I am so thankful for all of the special people around me that make this work.
