Lip Sync Battle is a Joke!
The Lip Sync Battle (LSB) is intended to be humorous and should not be taken seriously. The norm on this show is for men to lip sync songs by female artists and women to perform songs by male artists. Zendaya performed 24K Magic. Julianne Hough lip synced I Just Had Sex. Jenna Dewan Tatum performed Pony. Channing Tatum, in full drag, performed Run the World (Girls). And Tom’s parody of Umbrella as Rihanna was, without a doubt, the best LSB performance to date.
Tom is British, and as such, doesn’t always speak like Americans do or convey messages the way we do in the United States. A perfect example of this is when Tom tweeted at the airport, “You can use the fast track lane IF YOU WANT!” hahaha “naaa mate I’d rather que.” Reading through the tweets Tom received in reply, I realized most of these fans were unfamiliar with the British term for line (queue), and did not understand the meaning of or the humor in his tweet.
The British often refer to someone as “love” but it doesn’t mean they actually love you or that you are their love. “Mate” in the UK means friend, whereas in the U.S. it means partner. When Tom said, “joke” regarding his Lip Sync Battle performance, he was simply saying his performance was humorous, and he didn’t want it to offend anyone, yet, people misconstrued what he said and got offended. Tom is not the problem here. Jumping to conclusions and judging someone without knowing their cultural differences is the problem.
