Elizabeth Smart, 14, was abducted from her home in the middle of the night in June of 2002, by pedophile Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, who brought her to a camp in the woods of Salt Lake City, Utah, a short distance from her home. Mitchell claimed to be a type of Messiah and forced Smart to marry him, saying that she was to be his first of 350 polygamist wives. He regularly raped her and forced her to drink alcohol, to render her submissive. As the weather became colder, Mitchell and Barzee decided to go to California for the winter. After the winter months had ended, Mitchell and Barzee spoke of travelling somewhere else, but Elizabeth, desperate to be found, suggested returning to Utah: she convinced her abductors that God had told her to return to Utah. Amazingly, the couple accepted Smart’s suggestion—a clever move for Smart, who was found by police almost immediately after returning, after nine months of captivity.
