“Twitty is deeply engrossed in both the African American and Jewish food traditions. “Blacks and Jews are the only peoples I know who use food to talk about their past while they eat it,” says Twitty, 38.”

“From Richmond it was a short jaunt to Colonial Williamsburg, where Twitty spent the week lecturing, conducting training sessions and cooking in period costume at three of the living history museum’s venues. In all his talks, Twitty emphasized the impact of chefs and cooks of African descent on shaping American and Southern cuisines in colonial times and after.”

“At a conference he met the scholar Robert Farris Thompson, author of “Flash of the Spirit,” a book about the influence of African religions on African American art that helped him see that “soul food” was, among other things, a spiritual term describing a mystical connection between humans and the animals and plants they eat.”

“He cooked and he gardened. He studied heirloom seed varieties, some that had been brought from Africa and some that had been carried from the New World to Africa and then, on slave ships, back to North America, among them okra, black-eyed peas, kidney and lima beans, Scotch bonnet peppers, peanuts, millet, sorghum, watermelon, yams and sesame. He called those seeds “the repositories of our history” and wrote about them in a monograph published by Landreth Seed in its 2009 catalogue.”

“Twitty’s embrace of all the various parts of himself — African, African American, European, black, white, gay, Jewish — sometimes raises hackles, as does his habit of speaking his mind. An article he wrote in the Guardian on July 4, 2015, suggesting that American barbecue “is as African as it is Native American and European, though enslaved Africans have largely been erased” from its story, elicited scorn and worse: Many commenters were outraged by his idea of barbecue as cultural appropriation.”

capitalism stops the growth of knowledge, when one is forced to work endless hours to simply survive, they never get a chance to research and improve their surroundings. there is no way you can argue it’s the most efficient way to “advance” society technologically, academically, etc.

this even goes beyond the whole “humans always have to work to survive blah blah” most of us are working far more hours than humans did a hundred thousand years ago to survive lmao. here’s the shocker they had far more free time than we do lmao. 

there’s no excuse for the amount of hours people are forced to work, when the vast majority of it is simply busywork that does nothing to improve the lives of people, and creates grotesque amounts of excess waste never to be used.

all that fucking labor appropriated and for what? to be thrown in a landfill or the ocean, etc. and to deplete our scarce resources? yeahhhh real conducive to societal advancement right there.

Many people do not know this about me, but I have been on Snap benefits. I lost a job in 2009, shortly after the Great Recession, and I had nothing. I had to wait in lines at a food bank to get two small grocery bags of canned food, some toilet paper and a bar of soap a week and I applied for and received SNAP benefits. 

Let me tell you, there was no luxurious eating. Unless, you think a diet of pasta, rice, beans, canned veggies, canned tuna, peanut butter and bread IS opulent. If you think going down to the Wonder Bread factory and buying their expired products is lavish, being on SNAP is the life for you.

But even if I did buy as much expensive food as I could, who cares what anyone else eats? It is a set amount of money each month. If someone wants to blow all $126 they get a month on one meal, who am I to say no. They are the ones that are going to have to figure out how to eat for the remaining 89 meals that month.

Should we require that “Welfare” Recipients eat garbage so that you can feel better than them?

On average they get about $1.40 a meal in SNAP benefits. Basically, we are requiring them to eat garbage, but still, that seems like too much for you.

  • In 24 cities on Monday, fast food workers took to the streets, hung banners from the tops of buildings and even shut down a corporate office in St. Louis. 
  • They had one simple goal: to stop Trump from making fast food CEO Andrew Puzder the top government official for protecting workers’ rights.
  • Puzder serves as the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the umbrella company that owns Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. burger chains.
  • Less than a month ago, cooks and cashiers filed 33 legal complaints against CKE. One complaint says that the company surveilled employees and sent out intimidating memos warning them not to speak to the press.

With Trump looming, LA just made it safer for immigrant street vendors to do their jobs

  • This week, Los Angeles lawmakers took a major step towards protectin gimmigrant street vendors.
  • Such vendors had been at risk of facing misdemeanor charges for selling food or other goods on the sidewalk, according to the Los Angeles Times. 
  • And for someone who is undocumented, criminal charges come with the threat of possible deportation. 
  • But that risk is gone, thanks to new measures from the city’s lawmakers.
  • On Tuesday, the city council moved forward with a plan to decriminalize street vending and will create rules that will eventually allow for legal permits for vendors. Read more
