polar bear hunt

10

The duels between hunters and hunted are as dramatic as any event in the natural world. The stakes could not be higher. For both, it’s a matter of life and death. Yet surprisingly, it’s the hunters that usually fail. To have any chance of survival, predators must be perfectly tuned to their own hunting arenas. Every habitat brings a different challenge. THE HUNT will reveal as never before the extraordinary range of strategies predators use to catch their prey. But even for the most skillful, success is never guaranteed.

Here’s an interesting “Before and After” pic… this is a sustainably Inuit hunted polar bear head that we cleaned at the Prehistoria Natural History Centre!

While some people take personal offense to the Inuit’s traditional lifestyle, their limited (and sustenance) hunting of animals is not what puts these species at risk. For thousands of years these incredibly hardy and ingenious people have managed to exist in the most inhospitable climate on Earth, while building a truly rich culture.

If you would like to protect the northern ecosystems, do not fault the Inuit for using their local resources to survive… do your part to reduce your personal carbon footprint! The warming of our world, undeniably accelerated by our vast civilizations, is the real source of harm.

Polar bear jumping between ice floes in the Arctic Ocean

For an animal that probably weighs 700-800lbs it’s pretty sprightly. It is remarkable to us that something so heavy and so bulky is able to achieve such feats of agility, especially on such a fragile surface, but the environment in which it lives demands this combination of great size and great agility.

Not only must they travel in this environment, but they sometimes hunt in a remarkable way; one of the classic Polar bear hunting techniques, known as the aquatic stalk, involves swimming on or under the surface of the water to the edge of an ice floe on which a seal rests. In a fraction of a second the bear will explode from the water, hauling its enormous bulk out and on top of the seal.

They really are one of the most remarkable animals on the planet, combining behaviour so adaptable that it reminds us of ourselves with strength and power that would be considered superhuman.

I shot the sequence from the which the gif is created at around 80N, out in the Arctic Ocean east of the island of Nordaustlandet in the archipelago of Svalbard.

Things whales in human care will never have to face

Strandings…

Predation… (here, eaten alive by polar bears)

Hunting by humans… (as with the expectant mother in the top pictures)

Wounds and even dying from being trapped in ice… (The top one being Keiko, after desperately slamming his head into the ice, trying to find a place to breathe. The second is one of six whales that got trapped in the ice and died.)

Horrific diseases that are easily treatable by animal care staff…

Propeller injuries…

More propeller injuries…

And even more propeller injuries. As with the dead right whale on top.

Death from starvation… (Rhapsody above, was pregnant and thus very big, but had depleted fat reserves. The male above her was very near death when that photo was taken, and he did not survive.)

When polar bears aren’t busy hunting, they are usually sleeping or resting, likely hitting snooze on their internal alarm clock- like us on a Monday morning.

The moment I realized there were four moderators I immediately imaged the four Links from LOZ Four Swords

It’s a lot like that, only creepier. We each carry a key to unlock the power of Kanaya, and we are scattered amongst the four corners of the world. Only one of us has a known location, and that’s Issie. They’re outside of NYC, and that’s all we know for certain. Nobody knows where Owl is, and the only thing they know about Tsuki is ‘She is to the West.’

As for R… he has been sighted in the cold harsh wastelands of Nunavut, riding a sled pulled by Polar Bears and hunting animals for sport.

If the 4 Mods were ever brought together… they would summon the True Kanaya , and she would take her rightful place upon the Throne to rule the world…
