If you, like me, are still going through complete Sarah J Maas withdrawal, and can’t really stand to wait for her next books, check out the list below to tide you over! Each book has many of the things I adored about both ToG and ACOMAF: strong and interesting female characters, magic, deeply beautiful writing, love stories to cry about, and an all around sense of adventure. If you have any more recommendations to add, definitely let me know!
I just finished this series, and I am still amazed by how masterfully Anne Bishop weaves her stories. Welcome to the Dark Kingdom, a matriarchal realm ruled by strong queens and the males that support and serve them (Rowan and Aedion anyone?). There is a prophecy fortelling the rise of a Queen with more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself, which gives us a wonderful story full of scheming, war, adventure, and a badass court I would kill to be a part of. Prepare your heart!
Graceling is the best series for all you folks who couldn’t get enough of badass assassin Celaena. Katsa is an assassin Celaena would be proud of, due to her rare ability as a Graceling. She is Graced with a killing power, and has spent her life as the king’s tool in doling out his reign of terror. In waltzes Po, Graced with fighting, and here to shake everything Katsa knows about her world. Cashore definitely gives us a twist Sarah would most certainly support!
This book aligns more with the romance and court mystique that Sarah presents so wonderfully in ToG and ACOMAF. Kestrel is the daughter of a general who helped the emperor conquer territory after territory. As she is faced with a choice, marry or join the military, Kestrel finds a friend in one of the slaves from the conquered people, and so begins one of the most interesting political schemes I have read in awhile! I haven’t finished the trilogy yet, because I am out of the country and can’t get my hands on the final book, but I would highly recommend it.
Cue another really cool empire written by an author who isn’t afraid to be inventive or go beyond the normal realms of fantasy. Vin is another Celaena-esque character, as the abandoned street child who turned thief who struggles to stay alive. When a mentor takes her under his wing, she discovers that her luck on the streets might be more than she could ever explain. Magic, mystery, and of course, a few court balls thrown in make for a wonderful mix. Warning: the last book made me cry. Like really cry. But in a good, I’m-still-mad-at-you-but-I-understand-and-respect-your-story-line type of way.
Raisa is everything that I have ever wanted in a princess. She is intelligent, passionate, feisty, and super compassionate. So when a war arises between the clans and the wizards, you can bet she has goals to achieve and empires to shake up. Throw Han Alister into the mix, a street wise leader, and things get tricky and fireworks explode. One of my favorite love stories in a long time, because it isn’t a story about just romantic love, but also what the love of a princess for her country can do.
Yelena is set for execution for murder, but is given the choice to be the next food taster of the Commander of Ixia. As if the threat of having poison in her system wasn’t enough, she is also given a dose of Butterfly’s Dust, which she needs every day to stay alive, and can of course only get from the chief of security. Fighting for her life soon becomes more than just guessing the right poison, but also a game of magic, love, and all out war. Best kind of combo out there!
This is the only book in the list to be set in a dystopian universe as opposed to a kingdom, but with a prodigy like June, no one can make any complaints. After a war tore the country apart, the Western United States is under the martial rule of the Republic, and June is their perfectly groomed soldier golden child. Day, on the other hand, is a slums boy who has become the Republic’s most wanted criminal. What happens when their paths cross is enough to make any country tremble, and to keep me hanging on to every word!
Literally anything by Tamora Pierce!
Tamora Pierce has been my favorite author since I was a little girl. Each of her series is set in the same universe, based around the story of an interesting and kickass female character, from the first female warrior to a wild-mage. I first found these stories when my mother decided my sister and I didn’t have enough strong women in our literature and Tamora really rose to the occasion. Start with the first series, Song of the Lioness, and work your way from there! I have reread her books at least once every year since I was a little girl and they get better every time. I cannot recommend these books enough!
If you read or have read any of these books, feel free to shoot me a message; I am always ready to geek out over them.
Demon!Yoongi because I wanted it to be a thing. Smut as usual. Shoot me a message or reblog if you want more Demon!AUs for BTS! I’d love to hear from you all! Please take this as a break from your finals ;)
“Come on ___, it’s time for church!” your mother coaxed, dressing you up in your nicest clothing for the occasion.
It was your first communion. It was a very important step in your religion and your parents had wasted no expense. You had the most beautiful dress on and your hair was done in such a meticulous manner that it was almost too beautiful. There was a cake that you and your family members got to eat before going to the church service for the day.
You had been waiting for this day for a long time. You knew this meant you were a member of the church and the community. It was a very big deal and your family couldn’t of been prouder of you.
Compliments flowed through the home, and you were the center of attention. Everyone wanted to take a picture with you and everyone wanted to give you a present because of the big day that you were experiencing. Your cousin was also there, getting ready for her first communion as well. But no one seemed to be paying her any attention…
You wandered over to her and sat down, giving her a smile.
“Hey, do you want some more cake?” you asked, offering her another plate. She shook her head at you angrily and folded her arms across her body.
“Come on darling! It’s time to go!” your mother announced, pulling you away from your cousin. You looked back to see your aunt ushering your cousin towards the door as well…
The day went on as normal. The communion went well, besides your cousin throwing a fit during the ceremony and having to be dragged out… It was an odd thing from her, but everyone kept their focus on you. You performed every part of the ceremony perfectly, like you had seen many times and the practice was over.
REQUEST:(Y/N) gets hurt outside the Institute (which is why she doesn’t attend Alec’s wedding) and she ends up getting sick from the demon poison. (platonic Relationship between Alec and (Y/N)).
( note: I write this a million times and I was never happy about it…I haven’t been writing for month so I’m sorry if this is horrible…This is going to be the first part of this request because what I wrote is way too long…Also, this first part is mainly focused on Isabelle and (Y/N) but the second part will be more focused of Alec and (Y/N). I hope you enjoy it regardless of my struggle to make this right. )
“Today is such an exciting day!” Izzy said while throwing clothes out of her wardrobe. “Well, it would be way more exciting if Alec was getting married with someone he actually loves, but yeah, whatever.” (Y/N) forced a smile. Izzy stood in front of (Y/N), she was holding a pile of dresses. “I know you’re not crazy about the idea of Alec marrying Lydia, and I’m not either but there is nothing we can do.” “I know that. I just want our big brother to be happy. And having mom and dad forcing him to marry a girl he bearly knows doesn’t sound a lot like happiness to me.” (Y/n) rolled her eyes. “Agreed. But you’re still coming to the wedding, right?” Izzy asked, panic in her eyes. “Well, I have a lot of work to do and I have nothing to wear so -” “Now you do.” Izzy smiled as she threw the dresses on (Y/N)’s lap. (Y/N) was going to say Something but Izzy Grabbed her hand and dragged her into the bathroom. “Come on then, try them on!”
“That’s it. That’s the one!” Izzy said with obvious excitment. “Izzy, you’ve been saying this for all the dresses I’ve tried on so far.” (Y/N) sighed. “Because they all look beautiful on you, but trust me, this one is perfect !” Izzy smiled and clapped her hands together. “Let’s do your make-up now.” “And I’m gone.” (Y/N) said as she tried to leave Izzy’s room, but the latter stood in front of the door, blocking the way. “Oh come on (Y/N), please let me do your make-up.” Izzy begged. “I already let you pick the dress, Izzy. I have work to do before the wedding, I have to get going.” (Y/N) complained. “I know, I know. But you said you would let me do your hair and make-up too, remember?” Izzy gave (Y/N) a sad puppy kind of look. “I never said that.” (Y/N) frowned. “Yes, you did.” Izzy said hopeful. “No, Izzy, I didn’t. And if I did, I was drunk, so it doesn’t count.” “Fine. At least I tried.” Izzy rolled her eyes and threw herself on the bed. “But don’t wear pink lipstick, it doesn’t look very good on you, sweetie.” Izzy said casually. “Thanks Iz, I’ll try to remember that.” (Y/N) said laughing after she rolled her eyes. “You’re welcome, that’s what a sister is for. See you at the wedding!” Izzy waved (Y/N) goodbye as (Y/N) left the room. (Y/N) has known the Lightwoods as long as she could remember. They took her in when she was lost in the dangerous world that was the shadow world. (Y/N) know the Lightwoods weren’t her biological parents, but still, they were her true and only family.
A few hours later, (Y/N) was woken up by her phone buzzing against her cheek. She opened her eyes wide open and answered the phone. “Where the hell are you?” a very angry female voice said through the phone. “Huh?” (Y/N) said half asleep. “The wedding is about to start! Why aren’t you here already?” Izzy said panicked and angry. “What wedding?” Izzy what are you- Oh my God!” (Y/N) said as she realised what Isabelle was talking about. “What time is it?” (Y/N) sid as she rushed into the bathroom. “It’s wedding time! Which brings me to my last question: why aren’t you here already?” Izzy asked again. “I fell asleep!” (Y/N) shouted, frustated that she had fell asleep instead of getting ready for the big night. “You fell asl- Oh my God (Y/N), you’re unbelievable! The wedding is gonna start any minute now, you can’t miss it!” “I know!” “Alec is gonna kill you if you’re not here for him!” “I know!” “So get your ass over here right now!” “Let me get ready and I’ll be there in no time.” (Y/N) said as she tried to put her dress on with one hand. “(Y/N).” Isabelle said. “I’ll be there, OK? I know what I’ve said earlier about the wedding, but I swear I fell asleep. I’ll be there, just tell Alec I’ll be there.” (Y/N) said before hanging up the phone.
(Y/N) got ready in what felt like two seconds, she put her dress on and tried to do something with her hair but she just ended up letting them fall on her bare shoulders. She was running in the never-ending hallways of the Institute (happy not to be wearing the heels Izzy wanted her to wear, but wearing her usual flat black boots). When she ran past the computers in the main hall, something stopped her in her tracks: a signal. Indeed, the computer detected a demoniac presence walking straight towards the Institute.
(Y/N) stared at the signal for a few seconds. She couldn’t miss Alec’s wedding, he insisted on the fact that h wanted and needed his whole family there, so he needed (Y/N) there too. But she couldn’t ignore the signal on the computer either, it was her job to kill demons and protect the mundanes. No, it wasn’t just her job, it was who she was, a shadowhunter. (Y/N) watched the signal as it grew closer and turned into a big red circle moving around the Institute. (Y/N) turned around and ran to the armory, she could hear people talking and laughing back at the wedding, she ignored it. ”It’s fine, it’s just a wedding. Alec will forgive me if I’m not there. Plus, he doesn’t even like the girl, it’s not like it was the wedding of the year.” (Y/N) tried to put her thoughts aside as she picked up her knives and a seraph blade. “Maybe it’s just Simon attending the wedding, it would make sense, now that Simon is a vampire, it would explain why the signal detected his presence. Maybe, there is nothing to worry about, it’s probably just Simon.” (Y/N) thought as she walked slowly around the Institute. “Simon?” (Y/N) called out. “Simon, come on, I don’t have time to play hide and seak right now!” (Y/N) shouted into the thin air. As she walked slowly into the darkness of the night, (Y/N) saw a shape in front of her, in the distance. “Simon?” She puckered her eyes to increase her vision. Suddenly, she realised that what was standing in front of her was more of a “what” than a “who”. Indeed, it looked Nothing like a human shape. (Y/N) gasped as long tentacles reached for her. This is definitely not Simon.
