Maybe SU is suffering from "low ratings" because idk they started regular schedule broadcasting in the worst time ever. Like for me I'm back in college and now I live on campus so I'm stressed by that. *This was not meant to sound snarky or rude*

Everyone’s viewing situation is different- and with a show like Steven Universe that appeals to a considerable range of age groups, I wouldn’t say your situation is the tipping point necessarily for a lower trend in ratings (which to be clear, there is no dipping point in ratings currently- SU’s ratings are fairly average in comparison to other series currently on air with similar viewership).

It might feel like it’s less prevalent currently for some, which in my experience is when people tend to worry/whine about ‘ratings’ but maybe that’s because it’s just not central in their everyday lives and conversations like it might have been before- and that happens! There’s lots of stuff that can occupy you in a day/week/month/year and it isn’t always going to revolve around the media you enjoy and that’s just how life is.

Steven Universe in terms of just core numbers and general online trends is doing very well, there seriously is nothing to worry about for the series future as far as I, an average viewer and casual observer of TV trends, can tell.

I almost quit the Flash a little after 2A. I said that if the E2 episodes didn't deliver, I was out. Thankfully, 2x12 was excellent for Iris and the E2 episodes (Especially E1) were a success. Now I no longer had to go "Where's Iris?" in almost any scene anymore.

I think the E2 episodes was the tipping point for a lot of Iris fans. I’m very happy with S3 in comparison to S2. 1A will still be the Golden Age for me, but what can you do?

Be cruel to your characters.

Let bad things happen to good people. Let your characters try and fail. And try again. And fail again. Let them be betrayed in the worst possible way. Let them betray others because they have no choice. Force them into situations that make them uncomfortable. Force them to argue or fight or bargain their way out. Drive them to the brink of insanity. Push them over the edge. Take everything away from them. Let them realize what they’ve lost.

Be kind to your characters.

Let faith and perseverance win out. Let love be enough. Let the Sun dry up the rain. Give them friends who will never leave. Let someone save them before the axe falls. Acquit them of false accusations. Give them the strength to stand up again. And again. When they’ve lost hope, give them something to believe in. Remind them there’s good in the world. Remind them there’s good in them, too. Surprise them. Make them laugh until they cry. Teach them that they can’t be broken.

Most importantly: balance.

Even the darkest tragedy has its moments of light; if your reader has no hope that things will get better, if your character doesn’t learn or become stronger for their suffering, the story becomes meaningless pain. Likewise, not only is it unrealistic for a character to go through life never encountering conflict or sadness, it’s boring. Not every conflict has to be life-or-death in order to be meaningful. Give your characters and your plots high points and lows; just make it real for them.

This comic is devoted to @bekah-the-beast cause she is a sweetie pie and likes Animal Crossing….a lot. On a side note the update is great and this means not all of my comics will be about Overwatch, yay for variety!

Volume 1 Weiss: (sarcastically) “Yeah, and we can paint our nails, and try on clothes, and talk about cute boys, like tall, blonde, and scraggly over there.”

Volume 4 Weiss: “You’re all just standing around talking about nothing! Worrying about your hair, your money, your stupid problems that don’t mean anything!

The lyric’s to Weiss’ song

“I am not your pet, not another thing you own. I was not born guilty of your crimes. Your riches and your influence can’t hold me anymore. I won’t be possessed, burdened by your royal test. I will not surrender this life. It’s mine.”

That one line about the test wasn’t very clear, but DAMN

*edit* I fixed the line i couldn’t figure out. Someone else pointed it out.

Tyrian's Semblance and How It's Related to Jaune

It’s no surprise that Tyrian has played a huge part in shifting the tones of RWBY and making them darker.  Tyrian has also become a favorite throughout the fandom because of his unpredictable personality, affinity for chaos, and his unforgettable Joker-esque laughter.

And the fact that he is just full of surprises.  When it was revealed that Tyrian was a faunus (an arachnid faunus, which confirmed that bug fauna do exist in Remnant) a bunch of theories centered around him exploded across the internet, most of which focused on his eyes and his tail, and how both of them are actually advantages he uses when he fights.  Today I will pitch in with my own Tyrian theory, but I’m going to try to figure out what Tyrian’s semblance is while still touching on other theories that I have heard across the web.  Feel free to tell me what you think.

I don’t think Tyrian’s semblance is the venom in his tail. Yes, his eyes change color when he uses it, but I think that that’s more like a warning than a sign of semblance.  When his eyes change color people should take that as an unspoken message to get the hell away from him because he’s about to sting someone.  I mean, you see animals do the same thing; when a cobra raises its head, you know that it’s about to pounce and that you should try to move out of the way.  The venom just comes with him being a faunus; it’s as normal to him as adrenaline is to humans.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Blake could see ultraviolet light or Velvet had an incredible sense of smell.

My guess is that Tyrian’s semblance won’t really be revealed unless he or someone else actually took the time to explain it, because to me it seems simple but in reality it’s pretty complicated.  I think his semblance is the ability to see/sense aura clearer than others can.

To us, someone’s aura only really makes an appearance when someone is attacked, or when it’s being activated by someone else. My theory is that when someone is hyped up for battle their aura flares to life, preparing to defend its owner.  It is said in World of Remnant that a true warrior can amplify and control their aura to their advantage.  Tyrian can see that happen, and from that moment on is able to find their weak points and their locations.

Now, let’s back this up a bit.  How would this semblance tie in with Tyrian’s overall prowess as a huntsman?  Well, this is where I’m bringing in another theory: Tyrian’s actually blind.

When I heard about this theory I did some research and found this on a pest-control site:

This would make sense because Tyrian seemed to be more focused and accurate when he was closest to Qrow/RNJR.  I also believe that Tyrian’s main source of “sight” is the metal sounds that weapons make when they clash against one another.  There is a point in which Tyrian reacts to a small metal sound that’s made when Qrow picks up his weapon, and it seemed like Tyrian honed in on Qrow’s location right then and there.  So while I think that Tyrian definitely has trouble seeing, it’s not like the world is completely black to him.

Now, there are a few things that people might use against this theory, and one of them is this moment:

People may ask, “if Tyrian can see auras, then how come he couldn’t ‘see’ Qrow?”  And I’ll tell you why: because Qrow is one of the most smug and arrogant people when it comes to fighting.  Just look at him smirking away.

A semblance is usually only used during battle, and the occurrences when they are used outside of battle are pretty rare.  I don’t think Tyrian can see auras 24/7; he can only see them when their users caught up in the fight, or when the adrenalin is rushing, heart pounding, etc.  When they’re excited, basically.  And when Qrow was being all smug and walking over to retrieve his weapon, he had figured out that Tyrian was blind and relaxed, thinking that he could waltz up to the wall and get his weapon with no trouble at all.  So the fact that Qrow let his guard down a bit made him invisible to Tyrian.

Then there was this moment:

I think this was the first time I saw Tyrian really look at something.  All I know now is that he shouldn’t do that anymore.  It’s creepy.

I think that Tyrian can see light and shadows, and that he’s just incredibly nearsighted. It says in the picture that scorpions have poor eyesight, not that they’re blind (though some are born without eyes, so who knows). I think the real reason why Tyrian got that close to Jaune is because he really wanted to see what he looked like…

…because he was interested in Jaune’s aura.  Pyrrha did say that he had a lot of aura back in Volume 1.  And we still don’t know what his semblance is, though a lot of people—me included—believe that it’s some kind of healing factor.  Tyrian saw Jaune’s huge amount of aura and immediately became curious, thought that it might be worth noting to Salem, and because of that, he…for some reason…jumped on top of Jaune’s shield and…really invaded his personal bubble…when he could have just shoved the shield aside to get a better view.  And it wasn’t just that; Jaune’s aura, as you can see in this picture below, is white.

I mean, usually you can figure out what color characters’ auras are just by looking at how they dress, and the only person that seems to have a color that’s not very expressive is Mercury, whose aura is grey (but then again, his everything is grey).  Everyone else’s aura is a bit more expressive when it comes to colors and whatnot, but white is known to be a color that represents purity, new things, hope, etc.  I also imagine that it’s pretty a rare aura color.  So a servant of ultimate evil—like Tyrian—would not just gloss over this development and shrug it off.  He would totally take notes. Just know that because Tyrian took an interest in Jaune, Salem now has her eye on him.

So yeah, there’s my long-as-hell theory.  I’m pretty sure Tyrian’s poor eyesight is basically canon at this point, so I can’t wait until they reveal more stuff about him…after all, he has one more scene in Volume 4 and according to Josh Grelle (the voice behind Tyrian) “if you thought he was psycho before…wait for that scene.”

Pointers on Writing Concussions

So, I noticed a recent trend in a lot of fanfictions when it comes to concussions in particular. From what I’ve seen, it looks like it’s almost no big deal and they don’t have too many symptoms. They might just stay in bed, be a bit tired and it’s brushed off completely. It’s pretty vague when it comes down to description.

After a hecka lot of research, I’m finding this to be an improper depiction of concussions.

There are some cases where it may be a minor concussion, and this would be okay. In the terms of ‘Miraculous Ladybug’, where we have superheroes flinging themselves around with their heads unprotected, this may not be the case.

Concussions can be caused by car crashes, sudden movements, or hits to the head. Hits to the neck can also cause concussions. They can also develop overtime, and can take months to years to actually heal. Symptoms will not show for a few days, making it hard to diagnose. Fanfiction-wise, I’ve seen characters getting hits far harder than a sudden jerking motion, and would surely cause more damage and trauma to the brain.

Not all concussions will cause fatal symptoms or permenent damage- but with this sort of head impact symptoms can, and will, be more severe and take more than a few days or a week to heal. These types of injuries are not ones to be handled at home, and may need temporary (sometimes immediate) hospitalization.

They can also be pretty dangerous though, and can be accompanied with internal or external bleeding of the head. Some cases have had fractures in the skull as well. Blood clots in the head can also occur, which can result in stroke. Now even more severe symptoms are brought up. These types of strokes can result in blindness even.

The following are a few potential symptoms of concussions:

• Seizures
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Headaches (can be severe)
• Dizziness or Disorientation
• Memory loss
• Confusion
• Loss of coordination
• Ringing in the ears
• Excessive fatigue
• Irritability
• Sensitivity to light
• Mild depression
• Difficulty speaking (slurring words)
• Sensitivity to sound
• Personality changes
• Blurred vision
• Loss of conciousness

Concussions are basically big ol’ hits to the head with lots of different symptoms. A tad more description can certainly help a ton. It can happen with lots of other injuries as well. Getting a good background on the injury you’re working with can help you a bunch.

I hope this helps the next time you have to write your characters ramming their heads into things!
