Re: your asking about PODFIC post because I love hearing about people's processes: First, I just want to say that I am always super impressed by the seamlessness with which you incorporate music into your podfics! What is your process for choosing which piece goes into which podfic? Is it atmospheric, usage availability, a specific plot-reference? Do you have a favorite piece of music you find you can use over and over again?

Awwwww, thank you! Also, I saw you leaving those nice, highly individualized asks for all the podficcers who reblogged that post, so thank you also for being such an awesome and interactive member of the podfic fandom.

My music process for choosing podfics is a little involved. I usually don’t even start looking until I am in the last stage of editing (timing adjustments, for my process). For me, intro/extro music is a crucial part of all my podfics, so I can’t release them until they have it (which is why two of my awesome ladies podfics from this year haven’t been posted to ao3 yet…I should probably get on that).

Most of the time, I have a general idea of what kind of mood I’m going for, based on the overall mood of the story. I also often have a general instrumentation idea (for example, I try to use electric strings for most of my Star Wars stuff, and cello-heavy classical for Gimli/Legolas LotR stories). Since so much of what I record is from sci-fi or fantasy fandoms, I try very hard to match the instrumentation to the setting (so, no death metal in Middle Earth.) To me, intro/extro music should set the tone for the story, and get the listener in the right headspace to be immersed in the story, so I try to stick with music that is either purely instrumental or occassionally has very non-distracting vocals. Sometimes, I can use a song with distracting vocals, if they have long enough instrumental introductions and conclusions, or long instrumental bridges in the middle, but this is less common.

The process of actually FINDING what I’m looking for, though, can be difficult. I never re-use the same song for intro/extro music twice (there’s actually a column in my podfic spreadsheet that notes what music I used, for that purpose) which means I am in constant need of new music. Now, I have a few ways that I source that music. First, I have a significant collection of music that I have either purchased or requested as a gift specifically because I thought it would work well for podfic (like an entire album of Russian Orthodox chants). Second, I have a lot of friends who have huge music collections and will help me find songs if I describe very specifically what I’m looking for (@fuckthisimgoingtoerebor and @amemait have been especially great for this). Third, I have on a couple of occassions composed and/or recorded intro/extro music myself.

The best resource, though, is Jamendo (https://www.jamendo.com/?language=en). Jamendo is like FreeSound, but for music. It has a whole BUNCH of music in a whole bunch of different styles and genres, all posted by their creators under a creative commons license, and free for personal use. I have source a crazy amount of podfic music from there. Now, searching their website is sort of terrible, so I end up spending a long time listening to song after song until I find what I am looking for, but it’s totally worth it. Jamendo is the reason I was able to put together podfics like that Alice Isn’t Dead one (Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road, located here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/9304787) which use atmospheric music under almost the whole podfic.

Thanks for the lovely ask! I hope this helps to give a better idea of my music process.

Hello everyone! Today @fishwrites and I are releasing a project that we have been working on for a while: An audio version of Watercast! The cover art was done by @lowaharts, and the voice is me!

For now the file is available on google drive, but it will be available on jinjurly.org, a podfic hosting site soon.

I’ll apologize in advance for the clicking of the microphone in chapter one, that problem goes away in later chapters!

I hope you enjoy it!

The Handplates AU by @zarla-s is a pretty dark place, and it looks like Dr. Gaster will never reveal his secret to anyone. But, what if he got caught…?

I’m back! Sorry about the wait, last week was…a thing, and this one took a bit more editing on the back end than usual. So remember when I said I was writing a Handplates fic? Well here it is! Asgore and Gaster are both played by a good friend of mine who also helped me edit the story, @hatori1181, aka Batzmaru!

This accomplishes like 3 goals of mine for this channel in one. First, to get something handplates on it. Second, to get Batz involved in something. And third, to get something I wrote up here, so it’s totally new to everybody listening :3 If you’d rather read it though, here is a link to it on AO3. And this is a one-shot, buuuut I caught the writing bug again and now I’m well into a follow-up. So this may not be the last you see of this story!

Oh, and fun fact: One scene in this was heavily inspired by these sketches by zarla. If you listen to the story I think it should be clear which sketch, lol. I had this idea knocking around in my head for a while, but those sketches really kicked me into high gear and turned me into a writing hermit for a weekend.

Also I had this song on repeat like the whole time I was writing this.

Wonderful @lockedinjohnlock-podfics commissioned me to make a cover for her latest podfic To the Sticking Place written by @blueink3 (The original written work can be found here). I was so honored and excited since I’ve always loved her works.

Locky wanted me to paint it based on @blueink3 ′s description of the poster which was great so of course I jumped right into it (though I was caught up with other things and dear Locky had to wait for quite a while, sorry mate :))). I have to say I was very inspired by her dedication and love for this podfic. So please go and check it out now!

HEY @kazefiend @anorha-nono LOOKIE IT’S DONE.

Soooo last week I planned on doing all sorts of shit since it was the 1 year anniversary of my channel…but then work decided to make me do 60 hours so that didn’t happen >_>; So long as things stay under control that won’t happen this week, though. Next up is The Scientist, then a little video to celebrate 1 year (hopefully, as long as YouTube doesn’t reject it), and my short handplates fics!

As always yall can read the fic right here. Kaze has written a couple of other fics in this AU, and I may just do those sometime in the future, with her permission :3 Anyway see you all soon~

UMFB - Chapter 1 (excerpt) FR
Kazliin/Reiya (author) thisisjustmefangirling (translator)

I was bored and could not sleep last night so I started translating UMFB in French just for fun and then I recorded myself reading UMFB in english… My accent was awful, I need to work on it more. So here is the recording of me reading a part of my translation. It’s the moment Yuuri sees Viktor skate on TV for the first time. If this bothers anyone, especially @kazliin, I’ll delete it.

(Language kink though ;-) #French )

Please tell me your thoughts on this!
YOU GUUUUUUUYS

It’s official. I am actual, honest-to-gods professional audiobook narrator. This morning, an author is sending me their manuscript and an initial retainer, so I can begin the groundwork on the audiobook of their YA novel in advance of the full contract offer.

Never let anyone tell you that your fandom skills don’t translate to real-life job skills. I would never even have DREAMED of sending auditions in if it weren’t for the skills I’ve learned in the podfic fandom, and the positive feedback from fans who listened to my podfics.

Fic Rec: Performance In a Leading Role

Title: Performance in a Leading Role
Author: @madlori
Rating: E
Length: 156,000 words
Complete/WIP: Complete
Summary: Sherlock Holmes is an Oscar winner in the midst of a career slump. John Watson is an Everyman actor trapped in the rom-com ghetto. When they are cast as a gay couple in a new independent drama, will they surprise each other? Will their on-screen romance make its way into the real world?

Rec: This is one of the Fandom Classics™ for Johnlock and (in my opinion) for very good reason. I like AUs for Sherlock, which show John and Sherlock still being very much themselves, but doing different work, or in a different life situation, and this fic is an excellent example of that. I really enjoy the details of behind-the-scenes life as an actor, and also how well-written the media coverage and talk show parts are. This was a bit surprsing to me, given that I don’t watch talk shows and don’t really follow celebrity media coverage at all, but I think the behind-the-scenes perspective makes it more interesting (or perhaps I have deep, subconscious need for celebrity gossip that I’m not fulfilling). I got very drawn into this story right from the beginning, and definitely felt all the emotional ups and downs that Sherlock and John go through over the course of the story. The end is highly satisfactory, and I would recommend the follow-on fics in the series as well.

ETA: I had also wanted to mention that I liked the ‘casting’ and characterization of all the other characters in this fic as well, especially Irene and Sally. (This is why I shouldn’t write reviews late at night, as apparently I leave out bits. -_-)

Bonus Rec: This was turned into a spectacular podfic by @consulting-smartass and @aranel-parmadil, which I highly recommend.

Something Strange Yet Calm by bibliophileap

Sorry for not posting this last night! @anthropwashere, this is the full version of the music I used for the intro/outro of It was real, and I repent.

I wrote this piece intending to make something a bit off, a bit strange, but not entirely displeasing to the ears. I originally wrote it for cello, but Noteflight has a really nice guitar sound, and I like how calm it sounds when played by plucked strings. I intend to use this music for the intros/outros of all future podfics I make.
